      Hi Vito, thanks for making contact. I practise and teach Shaolin Tong Bei Quan (also known as, Da Tong Bei Quan) to my students here in Vienna.
      But it is the tip of the iceberg of Tong Bei boxing, and not as in-depth as you seem to practise it in Milan.
      I would really like to visit at some point and learn more about the Tong Bei tradition. Great respect to you there, it looks fantastic what you are doing.

      It's great to hear you're practicing tongbei in Vienna. Thanks for your appreciation, anyway my Master Stanislao Falanga, after 30 years has created a big structure in Italy to develope traditional wushu, he lives in Naples but he has got schools all around the country and Milan (Where I live) is just one of them. In the end of september he will be for a tanglang seminar in Dusseldorf and maybe he could show also our tongbei if there'll be people interested in. Bye and good job to you :)

    I'd like to point out while this style does have very effective blocks and strikes in combat, some of the more meditative, non combat techniques are being applied incorrectly in a fight situation here.
    This style, much like bajiquan, is effective, with many useful things like a philly shell, close range parries and decent angling while you strike, but leaving yourself wildly open and swinging your arms at maximum distance is gigantic circles is absolutely not effective in a fight.
    Be careful applying this style to fighting, some of it has zero practical combat application, like any kung fu style.

    • @TongYuanWUSHU
      @TongYuanWUSHU  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for watching and your comment, anyway, your critique is, in our opinion, incorrect, or at least incomplete. The big circles we show in this video are an educational system wich is used in many traditional chinese styles such as Taiji quan itself for example. Most of serious traditional practitioners know that the study starts from "the big structure" (Ta Jia) to evolve in the "little structure" (xiao jia). The big circles you study in tongbei quan are needed to understand more easyly how the back works and how to get the force through from the feet to the hands. As you can see in this other videos the circles are more and more smaller ruclips.net/video/Qb0eyc7MpPw/видео.htmlsi=o0PvrtCFcll3r4-H

    Honestly I don't know why Xu Xiaodong counted this as an effective martial art. Just judging from this video it looks like a traditional and ineffective waste of time. Maybe it has health benefits like Tai Chi but for a real fight I don't see it. My background is MMA. Xu also said Wing Chun is also an effective martial art. That I do believe because they actually will put themselves to the test of a real fight against all comers.

    • @TongYuanWUSHU
      @TongYuanWUSHU  7 лет назад +3

      Hi, Thanks for watching our video and your comment: MMA effectiveness depend on "how" you train your technics not only "what" technics... Tongbei effectiveness depend on the fact that it is a "method" as they usually says. That method has to teach how use body mechanism in the fastest way you can. So you could use that method also in your MMA. Maybe you'are not able to see that in video because you're focused on other aspects.
      I'll copy and paste here, for example, a comment to another video on our channel of someone who speaks about similarities between boxe and tongbei, and I invite you to see the other videos on the channel where we show many application technics from tong bei:
      " I’m a fan of Tongbei, regardless of whether or not it’s a legitimate
      animal imitation art or not. Is it just me or boxing and Tongbei are
      really akin to each other in many aspects? I mean, both utilize the
      back, abdominal, waist and hips (core) muscles to generate power. Both
      use the rotation/twisting of the waist, relaxation of the shoulders and
      the extension of the arms in doing so. I mean, even the lowest level of
      boxers are taught to fully utilize their back, or else they won’t even
      make enough power to damage their opponents. Humans are of the great
      apes group, so why not use simian-like movements in our combat? Blocking
      an oncoming circular strike with the shoulders is a legitimate way of
      defending ourselves. The only real difference between those two arts is
      that one is “hard/external” while the other is “soft/internal”, and even
      then it is still debatable (Tongbei can be “Hard” sometimes, and is not
      totally “internal” either, I believe).Am I the only one who is seeing
      this?
      Look into the more “fancy” or “technical” side of boxing, and you’ll see
      what I’m saying. Flicker jabs, classical pugilism hooks, Slavic hooks,
      etc. A lot of techniques in boxing use flicking and whipping type
      movements in their execution. Also, in my opinion, the mechanics in
      Tongbei are conducive to boxing hooks, overhands and uppercuts"

      Tong Yuan WUSHU- Thank you for your respectful and intelligent response to my comment. I will respectfully try to do the same so that we both can have a discussion that will be productive and not negative in nature.
      I made my comment about the effectiveness of Tongbei because judging from several videos I viewed of your style it did not appear to me to be as effective as Xu Xiaodong made it out to be. The style looked to me to be an extension of Northern Long fist style which itself has been shown in competition to be a very weak style but at least they are willing to test their style. I made that observation based on my own background and experience in the martial arts. My problem with many martial arts both Asian and non Asian such as Russian Systema and Israeli Krav Maga is that they will demonstrate the theory or controlled applications of their systems but do not test the effectiveness of that application in a truthful and realistic combative situation such as sparring or competition. Showing an application of a technique in a controlled situation is only half the story. As we say here in the US, "ok, you have showed us what you say you can do , now do it for real".
      Xu Xiaodong who I consider to be a very brave man proved that hypothesis by bravely fighting a master of a supposed dangerous martial art such as Tai Chi Chuan, a style that has made claims of almost magical ability, that the only way to show the effectiveness of your art truthfully is by testing it. I did not see any real test of your system's effectiveness in a truthful realistic manner such as sparring in any of the videos I viewed. That would have shown me the physical mechanics with which I could have made a better conclusion. So therefore I had to come to my conclusion with the limited evidence I had.
      I am a retired police officer from NYC, New York and I grew up in a very dangerous part of the city. You had no choice but to learn how to fight. And many people there practiced some form of self defense skill whether it was simple boxing, wrestling, street fighting or an Asian art such as Karate or Wushu. So the odds of you fighting someone with some skills either in the streets or even in school was high. I am only speaking of hand to hand skills not weapons. That is a topic for another discussion. In my police career I chose to learn Aikido an art which allowed me to restrain a person I was trying to arrest while not hurting that person in any significant way. I also learned a Phillipino art called Escrima to learn to use my baton more effectively if the need arose to that level. I was never convicted of being overly aggressive in my police career. Unlike many police officers who chose more violent methods and could end up in jail or worse. Later I found an instructor of MMA and I learned that discipline. I am 58 years old now and I have seen many fights both legal and illegal. So I feel I can be a good judge of a martial arts effectiveness.
      Another issue I have with many martial arts systems is that they take a long time to make it effective and that also makes it more expensive to learn. Many, many people do not have the time or money to train for ten or twenty years. But a style like MMA can be learned very quickly in 2-3 years if you find a good instructor and therefore for a lot less expense. And MMA has allowed itself to be tested in the fire of realistic testing whether it is sparring, competing and or a more dangerous street fight. A person training in MMA for 5-10 years is usually good enough to compete as a professional fighter.Another example of the arts effectiveness.
      As I have a tendency to write too much I will stop here. I hope that helps you to understand my viewpoint.

    • @TongYuanWUSHU
      @TongYuanWUSHU  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks you too for your kindness in argumentation, we really appreciate it, and congratulation for your carreer, a cop of newyork is a sort of super hero in my opinion... Believe me, we really understand your point view because it is related with the classic problem of the difference between combat SPORT and traditional martial art. We're not interested in effectivenes for sport event, we know what it means the training for combative sports, we think it is madness that a ridcoulus Taiji Master wants to fight against a mma athlete. Real Traditional Martial arts are different from sport fight, to explain what I'm saying I'll use another comment (sorry, but my english is not so good, so I think this a good way to explain what we think) to another videos: ruclips.net/video/ZmeMUFETkCE/видео.html please look at this one starting from 2:10, as you can see there's also some sparring, the comment is this one: "James O'Brien1 giorno fa (modificato)
      At 2:40 that is a Dim Mak technique. A quick strike to the Catarid artery can send blood rushing straight to the brain causing an inflicted stroke. If done at full speed it will cause either temporary or perminent paralysis of one side of the body or death. It is very dangerous to strike in this spot for sparring because a burst of blood to the brain is the same thing as a stroke".
      So, real traditional is not for sport, it was created for war. What my Master searchs in over 30 years of china trips is the way to use the body mechanism to strike with effectivness, with, surel,y take care for own health and all the good thinks of martial arts... I think this is what Xu Xiandong says too. Many schools sell taolu, forms and gymnastics, but in real trditional the taolu is secondary, first focus is to study a technics or a combintion of them and get them useful, using the principles of the styles. but this is not for all people...
      Anyway thanks you very much for you contribution and keep on traininig.

      Tong Yuan WUSHU - Thank you once again for your respectful dialogue. Your English is far better than my Chinese. I tried to study a little Cantonese in High School which was near China Town in NYC. I also studied a little Southern Praying Mantis there as well. I viewed the video link and I thank you for taking the time to find that for me by the way.
      Although it did not show any actual sparring it did show some physical body mechanics I could use to make a better evaluation of your style.I enjoyed the fact that it is a close in counter type of style. Although the attacker in the video was not using real time speed and or combination striking I could still make out the intelligence of your styles techniques.
      I guess it comes down to what the practitioner thinks of their own style. If it works for them who am I to say it may not work. I know people strong enough and athletic enough to make even Ballet dancing a martial art. So I will end by saying enjoy your training and let's hope that martial arts unite people instead of dividing them. Best wishes.

    I have a great deal of respect for most martial arts. But this one seems less efficacious than Tai Chi. ( And I understand that despite the appearance. Tai Chi is a very practical fighting art. So stop typing.) I would like to think that some day, some Tong Bei student will take his skills and test them out in a MMA arena. He may shock the world. Or he may be like that Aikido teacher who found out after fifteen years what he had believed in didn't work in the real world. When will we find out? I'm betting never. Many styles of martial arts are better than nothing. Many of these reputations are hundreds of years old. But now, in the twenty-first century. How well will it work against an MMA professional? Anything will work against the untrained. But how well against someone who is trained ? I fear some of you will be greatly disillusioned. Food for thought.

      Thank for your comment and your time, we have answered to a similar question many times, if you want please check it out reading the comments under our most viewed videos. The point is that you imagine the mma is the whole world of martial arts, we are not intersted in combat sport, and none of us think that a guy who only studies tongbei should go in an mma cage to prove the effctivness. They are different worlds with different purposes, and you don't need to become a mma fighter at all costs to learn self defense. Traditinal styles, indeed, studies body mechanism to generate power from relaxing, something that may be useful for the mma fighter with open minds. So please do not compare them 😊 thanks for watching
