Music by Joakim Karud / joakimkarud
I like the way you think, I had the same idea years ago and just now setting my woodshop back up.....
Your addition of the downdraft table element is really unique. I like that. I also liked how you used pegboard as a template for the holes. Really creative. Thanks for the inspiration!
+The Naked Carpenter I appreciate that! I thought it'd be a good inclusion with the table so large. The downdraft is a better gain over another cubby.
I was about to write the same thing! I'll be using this idea! Thansk!
+Uncle Paul thanks for commenting! Glad you found it useful.
Did you mark and drill all the dog holes by hand? There is a tool from a little outfit called Woodrave that uses pegboard and your router to get perfect 90% holes.
I did drill them all by hand. That would’ve been handy to have
I like the sanding corner
It was handy
Just finished this build, thank you for the idea of a downdraft in the table. On a side note, when pushing stock through on the table saw the build looks like the flag to me, even cooler!
+Greg DeKeyser that’s awesome! Glad you built it and enjoy using it!
A great build, As constructive feedback at times the back ground music was so loud, I struggled to hear what you were saying. It may be beneficial to keep this in mind in your future videos.
I too liked how you've incorporated a downdraft table and I thought how you used pegboard and spray paint as a template for the holes was pure genius.
Caleb, we now see what you have done to Andy's garage! It was good to meet you in Skiatook, OK and chat about the old neighborhood this past weekend, now take your wife out for some of that catfish we told you about. And our chance meeting really shows you just how small the world is. Oh, the work table is awesome as well.
+Steve Mettes it was great meeting you guys as well! What a small world. I still have the directions to that catfish place and we will be checking it out.
Great idea spray painting the boards with the holes to be drilled. Brilliant. Mine is much smaller, but has the down draft bit too. Then again, my shop is small & narrow. Great video
Thanks! Occasionally I have moments of genius like that. The downdraft is great! I ended up getting rid of this cause it was too big. Built a 3x4 assembly table and just finished a 2x4 handtool bench.
YouCanMakeThisToo Do you have videos on those?
I sure do. Go to my page and check out the workbenches playlist. They’re all there. I’ve built like four, haha. It’s practically it’s own hobby.
Excellent ideas. I like the idea of a built in downdraft table, it's closer to my needs than the portable units.
It was really handy to have!
lol watching you use all those screws all I can hear my tight ass old boss whinging about how "screws aren't cheap just glue and pin it"
Haha sounds like a real cheap fella
Thanks for the idea. I have been trying to think of how to spce the holes and this just solved the problem.
Glad I could help!
The downdraft section is an awesome idea! The only way I can see to make a significant improvement would be to have drilled your dog holes using the Parf Guide system. But that is another cost I guess. Thanks for the video mate!
Any kind of jig probably would’ve made them better. Then they could be used for squaring as well, I was just using it for holding though. And thanks!
Thanks for the link to the casters. Now I can trash about 20 hours of cad and design work on what I was coming up with! :)
Haha I understand! I’ve spent tons of time prototyping and making half ass casters on older workbenches.. really glad I just bought some good ones this time.
I like the peg board layout trick with the spray paint.
Thanks! That was a huge timesaver.
Really liked your 'editing trick' and your 'little helper' too.
Thanks! 😃
The book provides clear illustrations ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO diagrams that cover many of the essential topics. The projects at the end of the book are valuable for enhancing your skills and creating your own furniture. A digital platform linked to the book that could offer the plans for other woodworking projects with the cut sheets would have been a nice addition, but overall, the book is excellent.
Hardwood or plywood.
The only thing I would add is a little round over on the edges. I have a similar table and this has saved so many times from chipping off the top.
That’s a good tip!
great idea on the use of peg board for hole layout on your down draft!
+kevin Finney thanks man! I saw others use it for the top but I wanted to just use my plywood but figured it'd be a good template.
Really liked the build, and the addition of the downdraft table.
Not sure why so many people are crying about the music, though. Who would have thought there would be so many professional music critics in the RUclips woodworking community? Honestly, I didn't give the music a second thought, until I read the comments.
Everybody's an expert at everything they didn't make, though.
Can't win 'em all, I suppose.
Nice work, brother.
Thanks, Michael! The downdraft worked better than I expected, even with my small dust collector. The only issue was remembering it was there 😁.
The music thing is weird, I’ve learned that many (or at least vocal) people have little tolerance for music outside their preferred genre.
Personally, I only listen to the background music I use when I make the vids... it’s not my normal listening stuff, but I think it helps set a tone. Ah well, as you said, can’t please them all.
That is a very sweet concept. I have several shop projects in the works, also based upon Ron Paulk plans, which I purchased on his website. I hope everyone who does use his plans will through him a bone by actually purchasing them.
Your addition of the down draft section gives you double duty of that section of the table.
Beats hell out of a separate DD table, cause who has the room?
+Andrew Bieger thanks! I definitely second the notion of supporting those that come up with designs.
Great looking bench. I hope it gives you many years of service
+Badger Workshop thanks! Before long I plan to make another bench better suited to taking the abuse of handtool work and this will mostly be for assembly. But I'm pleased that this one is passable at it.
Building a hand tool bench is my task for this week.
+Badger Workshop fantastic. I look forward to seeing it
Great table and great idea including a downdraft table! The template was cool too!!
+Yannick Roy thanks! I get your confusion. When I put the ramp in the table was upside down, so it looked like I closed it off. But then I flipped the table before I drilled the holes. So the holes are on the side of the ramp with the vacuum port.
Oops I just realized that you had it upside down...
At 7:15 into the video I see that you have your dust vacuumed with a kit hooked up to your drill press could you tell me who make's it? Thanks
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
+YooToob Consumer who made what?
I really liked this table ! I especially liked the little assistant on the table !
Nice! I like your spin on this design. I am going to steal a couple of your ideas for the bench I'm building!
+Allen Tegarden glad you found it helpful!
Nice added feature!
+Seth Galitzer thanks!
Very nice build.
+RocketManJeff thanks!
How is the downdraft working for you? Is it still effective? Do you have anything you would do differently? I agree not having a work table to build a work table stinks!!!
+Kevin Hanna it works pretty good! My dust collector is a little under powered for it but I'm going to upgrade it eventually. But I wish I'd drill less holes now and then just drilled more later when I upgrade. Honestly.. now that I have some other news tools and I'm trying to arrange I wish I'd only gone 6' long. Love to see what you come up with!
C’est du bon boulot, merci pour le partage.
im building that! thanks
Hi, Great job on the table. I like the down draft addition and your template idea.
Can you post a URL for the stretchy sandpaper?
Looking for your next videos...
I added an affiliate link for the sandpaper to the "tools I used" part of the description. Thanks for watching! I have some cool videos coming down the pipe for you soon.
That's a large task! Nice work!
Thanks, I appreciate it! Definitely worth it though.
Awesome table
+David Harris thanks!
Very nice build and downdraft section; thoughts on using pegboard inlaid like a router plate? a small cross section underneath for support?
That would work fine! Save a lot of time drilling, you’d just have to remember that it still isn’t as strong as the rest of your top.
I know this video is a couple years old but can you explain the ramp piece at 5:02? How does the air pass the ramp into the lower part?
It was upside down.
YouCanMakeThisToo oh haha gotcha. Thanks I think I need some caffeine 🤦🏻♂️
Table is awesome! I hope you are paying your little assistant well hehehe. On a technical side, be sure to slow the words scrolling down next time you use that. I have no idea what it said. Might've been able to read it if I didn't have a toddler in my lap while watching, but it was pretty fast.
+Callee Harris oh, he gets paid really really well.
Genius idea to use pegboard as a template and paint
It was definitely one of my better moments.
Nice work!👍
+Paolo Bosco thanks man!
Very good
+LUCAS REGIS CARDOSO thank you!
Dam and I was going to ask where you got that from lol. Awesome job
+Thom spillane haha thanks!
when does mine get deliveried - LOL - great job!
Haha, thanks Jimi!
Nice build, thanks for sharing! Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I do wonder if drilling that many (albeit tiny) holes actually ends up reducing the amount of suction you'd get in that section. I believe I'd stick with just using the dog holes.
It worked great! I thought was big holes all the suction would be close to the port and die farther away.
Smaller holes give you the venturi effect.
You’re smarter than me
can you share the plan for your drill press vacuum system or a good photo of it? Thanks
Perhaps i missed something on the down draft box. you placed a "ramp" on the inside but how is the dust supposed to get sucked out? Loved the template idea for the smaller holes. i will be stealing that. Great video.
+Jeff Chaffin thanks, Jeff. I put the ramp in while the table was still upside down, that created a chamber which contained the air port. Then when I flipped it over and drilled the holes that put the holes in the same chamber as the port.
YouCanMakeThisToo yes you certainly did. Lol my mistake.
+Jeff Chaffin haha no worries man. Check the comments and you'll see many have missed that.
So many Holes...how is your drill feeling?
+Wood.Work.LIFE. All three of them are pretty sore!
Very nice bench and well made, but completely off-topic, what's that song playing near the end (repeating "ooh yeah, ooh yeah")?
Cheers!
It's Summer Drive by Joakim Karud. Thanks!
Your miter saw link leads to a Hitachi C12RSH2, but in the video your using a Dewalt. Did you switch and if so, is the Hitachi better?
Oh weird. Yes! I enjoyed the dewalt, solid saw. But it was a fixed 10”. The hitachi is a 12” slider, I just wanted more capacity. And I actually recently upgraded that to the makita 12” slider to get better dust collection.
The choice and volume of the background 'music' made this impossible to watch. I would mute it, but there's also a little instruction in the background (should be in the foreground).
Yeah, this is one of my first videos before I learned how quiet you've really gotta turn down the music, and way before I could afford to higher a real editor. But, I've paid to get captions done for all those videos.
Looks cool, can't hear anything over the music though
So, pls. tell us which technique you did use to locate and drill the dog holes? How long did it take?
I used a chalk line and t square to mark off the holes, then I drilled each one. It took an hour or two.
Really nice bench build well done, one thing those dog holes that you did, why didn't you use a router to do the holes? New Subscriber Now.
Barry (ENG)
+Barry Roberts thanks! I didn't have router bit guides, a good bit for that task, and didn't want to mess with setting up a template. Chucking up a bit and drilling just seemed easier. It's purely personal preference.
Looks like a great work surface! Are you happy with the casters? I looked at getting some of those a while back.
+Bruce A. Ulrich thanks, Bruce! I’m really pleased with them. Pretty sure I’ve gone over the weight on them and they roll great.
Well, that's good to hear! I like how they flip up out of the way when you're not using them and your workbench can sit on the ground.
+Bruce A. Ulrich for sure! They also have a mounting kit so you can have one set of wheels and easily swap them between items. Great for heavy stuff that rarely moves.
Nice Victory :) Subscribed!
+RTD121276 thanks!
lmao some dangerous ass shit happens in that shop
Just a guy doing things in his garage man
Nice work! Enjoyed watching the build. Tell me, what is the dust extraction shroud on your drill press? Drillnado? Are you happy with the system?
Thanks! It is the drillnado. It’s okay. Works alright, but gets in the way a lot. I’ve barely used it since I installed it.
Where do you get those casters?
+Wildman Tech picked them up at a Woodworking show. Added affiliate links in the description. They're awesome! Rated to 400lbs.
Thanks! They're exactly what I've been looking for!
I made my own. Video out Sunday morn. Thanks for the inspiration! Mentioned you.
Wildman Tech thanks I really appreciate that! I look forward to seeing it.
effin subscribed
effin awesome
How tall are the sides? 8”?
Curious, did you use 20mm or 3/4" dog holes?
3/4"
Nice! Where did you get that bit holder you have on your impact driver?
Thanks! Pretty sure it was a Lowe’s holiday find.
You have a woodshop but no truck?
At that time, correct. When the timing belt went in my car I bought a truck. I’ve been woodworking for 7 years, I’ve had a truck three of them. Dropped the rear and front seat I could fit 8’ sticks of most common dimensions in my car. Only plywood was an issue. Precutting at the store sometimes worked, when it didn’t I’d rent a truck. As convenient as the truck is, I would prefer to go back to a $20 rental every month or two over my current truck payment each month. It was way cheaper.
How dose it go for rigidity and top vibrations during heavy tasks like chiseling?
It worked pretty well. Some more bracing on the bottom would help.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo thanks u mean the legs or just thicker internal spine pieces
@@jakoj2098 The legs on the base. The top is crazy rigid.
@@YouCanMakeThisToo yeah prob the straps as hinges might give too much flex maybe it needs metal hinges and timber fixed span on lower leg.
Are your dog holes truly squared?
No, they're just plain round holes, so "dog holes" might be the wrong name, but I don't know what else to call them. But they fit my Kreg dogs which work as stops, and with the 1.5" inch it can hold a holdfast (not crazy tight, but enough for light work).
Is IKEA wood real wood?
Depends on the product. They have some real wood stuff
Love the build.....the music....not so much.
Glad you enjoyed the build!
What type of dust mask do you wear in your videos when sanding?
RZ mask
You cannot "Pre-drill" holes. You whether drill a hole or you don't.
Nice table! Good for light work.
Oxford and Collins dictionaries both disagree with you on the vocabulary point. But thanks!
LOL. Stick with me. If you drill a hole, you have not pre-drilled it- you cannot drill a hole before you drill it, because you have already drilled the hole. You can't pre-shoot a bird, pre-cut a tree down.
You can say; Pre-fabricate the workbench as in cut all the materials and drill all holes to be assembled later.
Tedious and moot, but something to think about. Maybe I'm wrong?
Your logic is sound and correct, but etymology doesn’t work on logic. If people use a word or term a way long enough that’s it’s understood to have a meaning, then that’s what it means.
Just like google is a company, but now it means to search. Xerox is a manufacturer, but it also means to copy. Velcro is a brand, but it also means hook and pile tape, or to fasten with that tape.
newstart49 - Your last sentence is correct. You are pre-drilling the holes which would be made by the screws. So the logic would be that you are boring a hole which would be bored via the screw, hence "pre-drilling" that which would be drilled via the screw. [consider the verb usage of the word drill: to make (a hole) by boring.] The screw "would" make that hole, hence the screw would "drill" that hole. However, since the hole is being created before the screw has the opportunity, it has been "pre-drilled" in the exact and proper location in which the screw will be placed - removing the drilling action from the screw itself. aka pre-drilled
Arguing semantics, while being fully wrong, no less. And, adding in the backhanded "compliment" that the table is only good for light work?
Poor form.
Cover dat bike!!
+drgypsum yeah I need to!
Thank you for posting your build. Really liked it and your commentary was very instructive. THE MUSIC IS TERRIBLE MAN! Next time go without, please.
+JenkkiTomppa thanks! Glad you enjoyed the build and commentary.
Build was cool; music, not so much.
+Steve R glad you liked the build!
A really nice project, that workbench. MIne more simple, but has lots of nifty features ;-) Subbed!
If you have the inclination, stop by my fledgling channel and show some support. Cheers.
Thanks! I’ll go check it out
Not a bad bench, but do grown men really listen to that kind of music? Thank god for the mute button.
+twoweary glad you didn't think the bench was bad, and glad you found the mute button, pretty sure that's why it's there.
