Hey guys. I remember 11 yrs ago going to the Free Library in this local town where I lived just to sit in the computer lab and listen to this song for the hour that our visitors pass allowed…I was drinking heavily and trying anything I could get my hands on at the time. My life was in shambles. This song and his music really helped me through some hard times. My sobriety date is April 22, 2017…..Love.
Funny, been sober before but far from now. Here I am today at old candyrat stuff from back when , looking back on what i(correction, life) needs to be now reminiscing..... And your comments are 6months old now with relevant replies still within days. Maybe there's a reason it's a small world after everything still.. Much love, may tomorrow wake up brighter for us all
I can't believe it's been 10 years already. I remember sitting in my room practicing guitar when this was uploaded. Antoine has always been my number 1 influence and biggest idol. I remember the goosebumps.
Oh yes! Haven't been here in a while. But its good to be back! When he brings the kick drum in that one bar earlier at the start of the second chorus... mmmm damn so good!!
+sussezq The bandanna/fabric is to mute any extra vibrations coming from the strings at the top of the guitar where they are attached. It gives the strings a bit more of a "pop" and gives the sound of the strings more clarity. These bandanna's are mostly present in fingerstyle/percussive style guitar music.
I saw him a week ago and i asked him what the rag was for, he said that whenever he plays a note or a chord, he can hear the high pitched sounds from beyond the nut... thats how good his ear is
In the first minute when he hits that signature bass hammer-on succession, my soul was chased by the music into a euphoric utopia. I kid you not I almost melted to tears. I aspire to be this kind of musician one day. His life's worries are running away on the strings and comfort is resonating through his body. I wanna cry...
Tou Lee I just read again what I wrote because of your reply, and was astounded that words came close to describing the entrancing beauty of this music weeping life into my speakers. In my opinion and mine alone, almost all music pales in comparison to how this can make one feel.
I've watched this a thousand times and i just can't get enough. Your talent should be known worldwide, cause you're not just a musician.. you're a magician.. your music send me to another landscape, another reality and touch deep down my heart. Thank you
@@weaseltown I’ve always deeply disliked the concept of “mugicianship”. I’ve talked about it a lot with colleagues over the years and we’ve always felt it does such a disservice to musicians. People too often assume this has something to do with talent. If you practice hours a day for many many years you can absolutely achieve a high level of skill. Naturally, some people have physical predispositions that mean they are suited to playing well - just like how being tall means you are naturally better suited to play basketball than a shorter person. However there are plenty of tall people who won’t play basketball professionally because they don’t practice. Antoine should be celebrated for his very hard work and mature dedication to the instrument and his compositions. What his hands do is simply a byproduct of that. Myself and others often have felt treating musicians as some how separately gifted or magical does a disservice because it means you don’t adequately celebrate them for the qualities they really deserve. Namely, the dedication and hard work it takes to practice obsessively even when you are tired and often practicing repetitive or boring exercises or phrases. Nobody sees the unglamorous, boring, exhausting, endless practice they just see the end product. While the end product is important to celebrate I think it is more respectful to celebrate everything that went into creating that end product.
I was here a few hours after it was uploaded, rewatched thousands of times until I somehow forgotten. Now, yt just recommended it to me. It’s amazing how fast our lives go by. A reminder for me to treasure each moment
Haha! Just the opposite for me. When things are going great I watch this to remind myself that no matter how good things get, I still suck at guitar haha. Keeps me humble.
All these years later. And every note is just as crisp. Beautiful. And the last breakdown is soooooo good. Still resonates the same way It did the first time. 🤟
I’m a guitarist for 16years and this might be the best I’ve ever seen anyone play and most definitely in this style I’m in awe...thank you for your beautiful music!
Good headphones are a must for listening to this, the fullness of sound and harmonic color is mesmerizing. Antoine Dufour's music has kept my jaw on the floor for a good number of yearsnow. It never gets old.
idk how many times i have watched this and commented here, but this is just too good to ears. absolute melody. and that section from 3:34 onwards is just out of this world. my heart just melts at that part!
Got turned onto this by Kevin Keith. Wow...absolutely incredible. How can anybody not like this??? Insane... Antoine, this is pure genius. A beautiful tune, great colors, evocative, played monstrously well. Bravo!!
learned a lot from him and andy mckee. One of the greatest musician ever. His duet w Tommy gauthier is another collection of masterpieces. Inspiration to take guitar playing to the next level n what i never thot possible b4 this.
I have been playing guitar for twenty years and only recently have I become acquainted with percussive finger style. Love this style of music but I keep coming back to this song. So amazingly beautiful. Thank you Mr. Dufour for this piece of sonic brilliance.
The Viewer I actually loled at this. My mate and I were saying a few days ago that once you start playing that killer bassline, one does not simply stop.
Goood god man!! That breakdown part at 2:00 gives me the goosebumps like none other!! And that OUTRO!!! This is one of my favorite acoustic songs ever. Seriously you are Godsend Antoine! Thank you!

Hey, if you could, my page has a couple videos that I posted of myself playing guitar as well! I'm no Justin King (yet) but, you might like what I have to offer! :D
Bruce Butler Yeah, the thing about science is that you need to first find good ways to objectively measure the various aspects that are included in figuring out who's better.
I find myself returning to this live recording often, over the past 15 years since I first discovered it through a friend. I hope Antoine Dufour today is in good health and still creating what he loves. How amazing the fungibility of beautiful music like his that can speak to us in our particular moments ("moments") regardless of ever-changing context. Music like his is a constant soundtrack that grounds us in the things we love while we experience the constancy of change. This song, at this point, conjures scattered memories of every year that I've came back to this song. Through scatteredness comes a reminder that we are one and the same. Thanks, Antoine.
Absolutely fucking amazing ! This is what musical talent combined with an immense amount of hard work might turn out. Remember people: You too can achieve greatness. Cultivate the art of whatever it is you're doing. Think outside the box, never give up and always look for inspiration wherever you can find it. Life sure is wonderful. It might at times seem like a fight, not worth fighting - and it might not at times be... However when you sit there, during that special moment when you're listening to an inspiring tune and looking deep within you. Then you'll know that the emotion is true.
Forever grateful to Antoine for this masterpiece. A true prodigy & something of a musical genuis. The term starving/struggling artist really applied to me within the last few years. Between making ends meet financially chasing happiness & chasing my dreams I somehow lost ambition for my passion for music. But seeing Antoine play this live at the Canvas Festival after NAMM was a life changing moment. Sometimes you struggle & lose everything & everyone that matters for your passion. Sometimes one moment is all it takes to remind you what you live for.
Antoine! I bought your album at the Candy Rat website in 2006 and lost it. Too my absolute astonishment I was able to redownload it in 2020. I totally forgot about this AMAZING piece of music an realized when I heard it that I knew it. You are with the greats with Don Ross, Andy McKee, and Michael Hedges!
Emil Hägglund I think you misunderstood my comment. My point is that this song is just as good, and deserves just as much recognition and views as Andy McKee's, "Drifting." This song is definitely more technical, but that doesn't mean it's any better or worse either, however, Antoine is not as popular as Andy, so to anyone who is new to Percussive Fingerstyle, Andy's name shows up first, and that's what they show all their friends. They do this before they ever even watch Mike Dawes, "The Impossible!" or even some of Lucas Jury, or the contestants of the #LowdenYoungGuitarist . There's a lot of talent out there, and "Drifting" will always be a classic, but this should be too, haha. ,Cheers Mate.
Marco Lively Indeed, it appears I misunderstood you. I thought of another Drifting, which is far more popularised. Time to check out Andy's songs, I know they are fantastic.
Is the scarf on the headstock there to ward off some stray or unwanted resonances? I'm guessing with this style of play, the entire guitar is used to make musical sounds, so maybe the scarf mutes a sympathetic resonance in the neck...? Astoundingly good playing by Antoine, as usual...
You may also have noticed that he bends the strings up there for the echoing effect during that one juicy moment of calm in there. I noticed when playing the song myself that squeezing onto those strings (they are stiff) kind of hurts your fingers a little bit; maybe that could be another reason.
It's so that the strings between the head and neck of the guitar don't vibrate - which in an intimate recording can be heard making out of tune notes. Also it's makes your harmonics very crisp and loud. It's all for the sound of a perfect live recording.
I'm just wondering about what steps to start in a path to becoming this type of guitar player. I originally bought a guitar to play songs I liked but when I started hearing music like this I was hooked. If I can be at least 10% as good as he is that'd be awesome. How does a person even start to going down this path of guitar playing?
Hey Peterson, It's great to see that your interested in learning how to play guitar! If you want to play this style of percusive acoustic there are a few basics that will greatly improve your playing. My first recomandation is learning how to drop the tuning of your guitar into an altered tuning of some kind if you don't know how already. This can be easily done using a inbuilt tuner if your guitar has one or through a cheap external one. A good drop tuning to start with is DADGAD( This is the tuning Andy Mckee used in "Drifting"). After you get that done look at a quick turtorial on how to resonate natural harmonics (those bright shining noises) by slapping, tapping, plucking, or scraping them. The last step would be to get comfortable with hammer ons from nowhere and incorporating percussion. This is a technique where you just use your finger pressure to resonate the notes without having to pluck the string and percussion is simply hitting the guitar body in certain areas with your palm, fingers, etc.
Also one more thing I didn't start playing until I was 21 years old so there is always hope to get this good if your willing to learn and spend some time with the guitar. I have a few original compositions of my own if you want to look on my channel and if you have any questions feel free to message me.
I was in the same boat as you a couple of years ago when I first heard "Spiritual Groove" by Antoine Dufour, completely hooked from the first moment. Mostly I do my own compositions, so I don't know an abundance of fingerstyle songs, but that is the song that I first learned when I wanted to become a fingerstyle guitarist. If you like "Spiritual Groove", I would absolutely recommend it as a starting point for Antoine's style of playing. Minus the bridge it is fairly manageable should you spend some time on it. Antoine is selling tabs for most of his songs though should you need it. Either way, good luck and don't give up, like most things this will take time and practice.
Alex Robin That literally made me laugh out loud. I was kind of shocked, and then I felt bad for laughing. (I'm still giggling while I type this) Anyways, a hundred thanks to Antoine Dufour for his beautiful music.
+Sean Tristan Francisco alot of nail guitarist use fake nails idk about him cause he is flapping his hands everywhere but acrylics are tough as hell look at john butler trio ocean he uses fake nails on a 12 string guitar and bashes the shit of his fingers XD so i think its not that painfull
That's what happens with weed. If this composition had not stayed in one key = you'd jump paranoid! There's a lot of drone music out there -- check-out Shakti. Welcome to India!

Always chase the goosebumps 🎼☮️
he probably did it in 1 take, too...
Oh yes! Haven't been here in a while. But its good to be back!
When he brings the kick drum in that one bar earlier at the start of the second chorus... mmmm damn so good!!
I finally realized what the handkerchief is for. Because his guitar becomes so overwhelmed with emotion, the rag is to catch its tears of joy.

The guitar feels the same way. Hence Antoine hangs a handkerchief to catch its tears.

If this guitar was water, Antoine would be walking on it.
This is somehow a fantastic description
Rather that than walking on the guitar
I really like your towel!
Believe it or not, that is there to cut down on harmonics from the strings above the nut. There is an audible difference on many guitars. :)

Always know where your towel is
thelukephone Thanks for the info, I thought it was for him to wipe the sweat off his hand.
parasite159 Epic comment! lol
the best I've ever seen, when people talk about badass guitar players i show them this dude, i play pretty well but this is awesome
oooo mannnnn that was insane!!!
Guitar Master !!
o poder está no pano
Será esse o segredo dele? Kkkk
This is one of the most beautiful things that I have ever heard. Love the passion in his playing.
I bet he knows how to play Wonderwall.
no that songs too hard
This is like ear candy, or... Steak. This is like ear steak. Sweet, juicy ear steak.
total ear steak....couldn't agree more
steven cross Ear steak. Too right you are.
I love the analogy but when I saw "ear steak" my first thought was Tyson/Holyfield.
Alex Robin That literally made me laugh out loud. I was kind of shocked, and then I felt bad for laughing. (I'm still giggling while I type this) Anyways, a hundred thanks to Antoine Dufour for his beautiful music.
Ryan Thompson It's bacon lol
Is he aware that this is probably one of the most awkwardly beautiful guitar licks that has ever been written ?
There's nothing awkward about this at all.
Still just as much a masterpiece as the first time I heard. Unbelievably amazing.
20 years of playing stringed instruments. *puts head on desk*
***** Negatively positive comment

Wow. What a great musician. Thanks for sharing, Rick.
Not bad! :-)
Almost sound like there's someone else, off camera, playing bass, I suspect it's all his his "hammer on" bass...? Any thoughts?
It's how he play. He is amazing! It's all him.
Dick Higdon
Yeah, I agree.
I always come back to this video whenever I'm deep in thought about anything. Thank you, and I mean it.
Does he hit his guitar with his nail? O.o doesn't that hurt?
+Sean Tristan Francisco alot of nail guitarist use fake nails idk about him cause he is flapping his hands everywhere but acrylics are tough as hell look at john butler trio ocean he uses fake nails on a 12 string guitar and bashes the shit of his fingers XD so i think its not that painfull
huh.... okay it must be fake nails then cause damn i tried doing that on my guitar and it hurt like hell XD
+Sean Tristan Francisco tissue paper and superglue nails :) makes them rock hard.
+Sean Tristan Francisco If you hit it with a glancing blow on your nail only it doesn't hurt! No need for any fake nails
+Clifford Wu (abuudabuu) true but in this I can see he is using reinforcement on his nails.. either tissue paper or cloth and superglue most likely :)
Just smoked a bunch of weed and found this video on accident. Wow~
Definitely better than looking for this video but ending up smoking a bunch of weed by accident.
*by accident
That's what happens with weed. If this composition had not stayed in one key = you'd jump paranoid! There's a lot of drone music out there -- check-out Shakti. Welcome to India!
@@jasminedakota3958 weren't no accident. The tune is for non-multi-taskers. One key, single-minded. That's why jazz would freak a toker.
@@pierrelacazotte8376 that's the dumbest thing I've read on RUclips in a while, and that's saying a lot. Thanks for the laugh.
... and damn it sounds good
I first saw this video back in 2014 and I fell in love with it till today. That's awesome
AMAZING :)
Oh I wish I could play like you. ;-; I just want to get lost in the music as I play like this.
I'm trying to image what the 200 people who gave it a "thumbs down" must be like in person.
No heart. And no joy. And no happiness. In my darkest moments I would smile because of the sheer brilliance of this.
Non Hitwan they are probably the kind of person that when you see in real life you just feel like you have to punch them in the face real hard.
Nah, they just mis read the dislike button for "dis I like" or they watched it upside down
+ItsMeKB hahahahahahaha.
Hands down one of my fav guitarists to listen to. Especially while doing hobbies. Really takes me on a journey and eases a busy mind.
