A beautiful song with orchestration by George Martin, his father is the inspiration for Put It There if it weighs a ton is something that his dad actually would say.

Cory - LOVED your reaction to this wonderful little acoustic classic from McCartney. That is exactly how I felt when I first heard it in 1989.
Cory says... "This one sounds like a classic, you know, McCartney song that I've never heard before. This could have been on the White Album."
Speaking of the White Album... an album doesn't always have "a direction". Some times the variety of the different types of songs - is what makes the LP interesting.
"Put It There" also has a nice story about how this is an actual phrase that Paul's dad said to him as a youngster. It's just a great track. My favorite on the LP.

I really love these album deep listens. It has been years since I listened to some of these albums and songs and these playthroughs have made me really appreciate McCartney as a versatile artist with many great songs which deserve more recognition. I really loved this one today and actually I am enjoying this album a lot!!

This one is the first of two songs Paul wrote about his father on this record, each put at the end of both sides if the LP tracklist
I don't know why Paul decided to talk about his father 13 years after his passing (1976), but well, he also wrote Let It Be 13 years after his mother's passing.
"Put it there if it weighs a ton" was one of Jim McCartney's advices for his young boys, so of course Paul cherished that phrase.
This is the only song on this record which George Martin contributed on, orchestrating the strings that appear midthrough the track.
This would be the second and final collaboration of Martin on a McCartney song in the late 80s (After his orchestral arrangement of 1987's Once Upon A Long Ago)
This song, even if so short, was actually released as the fourth single from the album in 1990

And Paul and Mike's Mother, Mary, who was a Midwife in Liverpool, died of cancer when Paul was 14. She inspired his dream and song "Let it Be" -family, important in Paul's music.

I heard Paul two times when he was touring to support this album. As I recall, he tacked on the "Hello Goodbye" coda to this song in concert.

And also loved this comment from Cory - "You know what else he did in the lyrics, that he does a lot, that is so damn clever." CPO - "What..?" Cory - "So the whole thing is... first of all the sentiment of the song is great." CPO - "Yeah'." Cory - "As long as we're here, let's get along." CPO - "Yeah." Cory - "Like let's work together. Let's put it there. Which is great. So like you said earlier before we heard the song... put it there like that's what you first thought - and then he, which is what he's saying in the chorus... but he's also saying like he says that line about father says to his son if it's too heavy - put it there. So he's using the same phrase with two different meanings in the same little section of the song. SO CLEVER, dude! What a beautiful song."
I really enjoyed getting to see you fanboy over Paul's lyrics, Cory. Nice job. You made my day.

I also enjoyed CPO's comment... "I like the way that there's just a couple of like subtle little differences in the rhythm of the way he's saying lines that I think is really clever and cool and something that a guy who's been writing great songs for 30 years - is thoughtful enough to do those things." Cory - "Just melodically you mean?" CPO - "Yeah, just like when he does the turnaround at the end of the chorus - instead of saying "put it there" the same way that he said it the first time... he says "put it there" like he says it quicker, you know." It's just a little subtle difference that's like... it's so clever and cool. I love that stuff."

Nice piece of music, nicely arranged as well. Your reactions, especially Cory's s, sum it up perfectly. Paul is referring to his father who had different phrases to ease a boy' troubles effortless.

      @@ricardo_miguel13 So a typical 50s dad then.
It's hard to know the extent of this. Paul has mentioned the last time his dad hit him only once and it was in the context of a coming of age moment, where you stand up to your parents for the first time. It's meant to be a positive story, but it could inform a pattern of behaviour. Paul is very respectful of his parents and never wants to speak ill of them, so these stories tend to slip out very occasionally.
