Manual vs auto us always the same thing, if 0-60mph and lap times are important to you, the dsg can't be beaten, similarly the dsg is a better option as a daily driver it just is. However manual is more fun due to driver interaction, and the way things are going with electric cars and no gearboxes, they won't be around for much longer! So enjoy them while you can I think

I have an mk6 APR k04 GTI with DSG and an mk6 Golf R with a manual. Been driving manual cars since the mid 90's, including an S2k, FD Rx7, and two supercharged C5 Corvettes. Far too much traffic on the roads now, and you can't outshift a proper DCT. Is the manual fun? Yes. Am I having as much fun with it as I use to when I was younger? Unfortunately, no. I have more fun in the GTI with the DSG.

  • @fredbrackely

So, I have a question for you. The MQB chassis is good, but why not build your track car around the Audi TTS platform? You would still have the EA888 motor to tune, plus its already much better dynamically on the track over a Golf R, at 110 Lbs lighter.

  • @MrCaterhamr500

I go for manual usually, but dsg in sport manual using the paddles to change is still very involving in a 400hp Golf 7 R. Coming out of a junction with TC off it’s still a handfull and amazes me how quick it can be for what it is. I also have a manual six speed Porsche 996 C4S and the problem is the Golf is much faster, the C4S was supposed to be the exciting car but feels tame in comparison, apart from the looks and sound. 996 will go for a bike engined Westfield or Fisher Fury to readdress the balance.

I’m looking to buy a mk7R now. And I can’t make my mind up on dsg or manual. I’ve never had a proper new age auto with dsg/dct etc. I always said I’d get one if I needed it. But I don’t. But looking at a lot of these vids the speed and sharpness of the dsg does appeal. My main concern is cost and reliability. Is the system built to take the stress of track driving and higher power/torque. What are the wear points of the dsg system and how much is the maintenance as opposed to a simple manual and updated clutch.

    • @QuattroSG

I love my 6spd manual on my MK7 GTI when the clutch is working correctly, but I am on my 5th clutch with this car after 160k miles of use. This has been very annoying because 4 of these clutches have failed due to the tob/slave failing and having the brake fluid contaminating the clutch pressure plate, disk, and flywheel. So that $80 failed part makes me buy an entirely new clutch kit, which is thousands every time. Its been the worst thing about this car. I would have gone gone DSG if I knew this was an issue tbh.

Why is the owner of this car continually looking at the gauges every time he shifts? Is this a thing with DSG owners, because they aren't getting that much feel through the driving and transmission experience like us manual guys get, where we know when exactly to shift, what gear we are in, and what rpm we are in, without looking? I don't know why I noticed this, but I did, and it a little odd...

Not a single doubt in my mind that you should've bought a DSG, especially considering that you knew that you're going to build up a track car. Certainly what i would've done and it's like you said in the video yourself : most people that were building up manual track cars would sell them later on for a DSG. That's simply because even though everything possible is done on the car, there's always going to be the manual box that will limit your track performance. That doesn't mean that i think you're stupid for not buying a DSG, not at all. I can totally understand your reasoning. Each to their own.

Can I ask a question? I don't know how old you are but insurance for your Golf R for road use must be absolutely horrendous with all the mods. If you are under 30, it is really expensive without the mods, but with them its must be off the planet, literally. I am 48 and have a have a 25 year+ no claim record and own an A45S AMG and its a tad over £750 full comp, with a clean licence and spotless insurance record. I asked a number of mainstream recognised insurers how much my premiums would go to if I took it to stage 2 mods . The answer was over £1,250. I asked about someone aged 30 or less and it varied from £3,500+ per year to uninsurable, In other words...no thanks. You don't need to state how much you pay but is your insurer aware of all the mods. According to Hastings (not my insurer) huge numbers of under 30 drivers having modded their cars don't tell their insurers. If they get stopped by the police they show the certificate and it doesn't show that it has modded. However if they call the insurer to enquire, those drivers are in seriuously deep sh*t as they are classed as uninsured. Thats an IN10 on the licence and a ban according to Hastings... I was just wondering how you manage to insure all your cars. It must cost you thousands. Just wondering...

Now it has a fully forged engine , methanol injection kit and a G30 660. If you ask me, which is the best modification from all, I’ve done these past few years,it’s definitely the DSG conversion. Dsg over a manual all day why do you want a clutch? Dsg can drive manual up and down on gear stick like sequential I don’t get what more driver involvement you want it’s just people talking 💩

I would have a manual all the way. It might be a fraction slower, but it gives proper driver involvement rather than feeling like you are driving a car on the playstation.

Dsg boring and no skill needed yes they are quick but that's it people are too hooked up on times and not driving skill or pleasure, manual your more involved with the driving and requires skills especially to shift fast and knowing when to change, I've had both and as a drivers car manual but I'd have dsg for round town n that
