- Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, just 60 miles from Chicago, is the largest single parcel of protected open space in northeastern Illinois. As such, Midewin plays an essential role in restoring a piece of ground back to the splendor of a blooming native tallgrass prairie. Along with local communities, the National Forest Foundation is restoring the once-vibrant prairie to Midewin.
My special needs son is glad to hear this and is all for preserving and restoring prairie and forest ecosystems.
It is so wonderful to see the youth working here!
Just discovered Midewin ourselves last year, and we live only about 10 miles from it. Never knew it exsisted until we joined our bird club. Loved our visit and am planning on going back
to see more.
Thank you all for doing this important work of saving our prairies...they are a treasure.
been to the flint hills, but ill have to come to midewin. thank you for saving our prairies.
Wonderful work
Glad I got a chance to work out there as apart of the YCC during the summers of 2011 and 2012.
After so many years of being in an altered state, how do you know that some species are invasive and some are native? It would see to be difficult to figure out.
Hi Mark, thanks for your question! Botanists and Ecologists examined historic herbarium records, flora of nearby natural areas, scientific publications, species and habitat experts, as well as flora found in patches of native remnant habitat on or near the property to determine which species are native or non-native to Midewin.
