This is fictionalized though that's why they say "Inspired By." The other Black Louisiana lady was the first millionaire - Malone. It's TERRIBLE when people are given the impression a story is true only to RESEARCH and find out it's not. Octavia is a sweet & talented actress though.

I absolutely adore this woman: talented, courageous, bold, loving, warm, funny, beautiful, compelling and inspirational. I loved her as Minnie in The Help and she did a stunning job of Madam CJ Walker in Self Made. Loved her smooth confidence and tenacity in Hidden Figures as well. What I also really love is when you look at her smaller roles, just how much sparkle she brought to the screen, like her role in SWAT - 'Just perpetuatin' a cycle you know!' LOL! She manifested that Oscar too: the thought about the Oscars - I just want to look all sparkly and win a prize, then she acted as if - I just held a hair brush and practiced my speech. Of course she put in the super hard work too. Whoopi tells a similar story about her Oscar win too. Love Octavia's tribute to her parents and in particular her mum, I was crying along with her. Love you Octavia xx

Annie Munroe, the mixed female in the movie's real name was Annie Pope-Turnbo who actually hired Madam as a salesperson, eventually they did have a disagreement. It is said that Annie invented the hot comb.
Both Madame and her husband, Charles Joseph, were very ambitious. no one above the other.

Seeing Tiffany Haddish shuck and jive throughout the movie made me nauseous. What was the purpose of letting everyone think that Addy (who's real name is Annie Turnbo Malone) didn't hire Madame CJ Walker because she had dark skin, when the truth is she was actually one of her sales women? Annie Turnbo Malone was actually a self made millionaire as well. This movie represented her like she was thristy and rachet. If she was my ancestor I would be very upset. That's one thing that's wrong with the world now, most prefer to be entertained by lies instead of knowing the truth. So I can't agree with you that at least it got made.

Octavia Spencer is the modern day Hattie McDaniel. And both have zero talent and big egos. And LeBron having part in this anti black, LGBT bs is not shocking
This was an awful series. It smeared Madame Walker, having her character falsely admit that she stole the formula for her hair famous hair ointment. This was a complete historical fabrication. The story also created this ficticious cartoon like rivalry between Madame and an odious light skinned almost white female business rival. In reality Madam Walker had a mentor who she worked for and had a very good relationship with. So this storyline was a complete lie. The emphasis on colorism was nausiating. The obsession with light skinned black women and the light skinned beauty paradym, seemed to be more of the writer working out her own psychological baggage and not Madame Walker's story. These plantation ideas of "good hair" "light is right" was promoted in the piece to be a given truth. These ignorant ideals were so important to the writer that she spent the majority of the story highlighting it. It was troubling as a parent of children of color to see these ideas being reinforced as truth under the guise of "reflecting the thought of the time". This was a horrible biopic, one that is not worth watching at all. I made my daughters leave the room, not wanting to poison their minds with ignorant plantation ideals. It's one thing to show it as it was (which she didn't) but it's another thing to believe the same ignorance that was given to black people to destroy us (which the writer certainly does) Poorly done.
