At the end of this video your words resonated with my watercolor journey. I love the end results I get but getting there has always been intimidating, as well as a mystery. Thank you for your honesty about your approach with a drawing followed with a color study.
    Again, thank you.

Again, you have inspired me. This is just absolutely beautiful and is relatable. While I enjoyed watching and learning, I value your final comments most. It seems like every watercolor IS a struggle for me. Realizing now that each one has its own "personality" helps me not feel defeated. I'll approach each one now as a new "friend." LOL
Thank you SO much for helping me grow as a fairly new watercolorist. 🤗

It's such a relief to hear those words from you. Truly. I've been painting for almost a year now. So, not much at all when it comes to watercolor, although I've been trying to practice every single day. I can see how I have improved and there are days when I feel marveled at what I have accomplished so far, but also there are days... 😖 yeah, it can be so, so frustrating, it feels like I just started. Plus everything that's been going on, which can be so depressing and distracting, with that constant feeling of impotence, the last thing I long to feel is the frustration and lack of joy about the one thing that's been keeping me sane during all these months of total isolation. Everything in life demands some effort, perseverance, and dedication, especially in troubled times like these. Hearing from your experience and knowing that the struggle is part of the journey no matter how long, I see maybe it's time to find my way and tools to deal with it as you did. I started painting for its therapeutic effects, trying to cope with depression and a recent burnout. Although I started painting mostly for relaxing purposes, which was helpful, of course, it was the routine and studies that had a real impact in the end. So, it's not necessarily bad news that my challenges with watercolor will last like...forever. 😅
On a side note: I tried to match the Antwerp Blue with my student paints (Van Gogh). By looking at its neat texture on your palette, it reminded me of Phtalo Green. So, I mixed it with Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue, and Cerulean, and they all looked pretty similar, as expected, and quite close to the reference paint (as seen on my tablet screen). Is there a mix that you'd recommend best to match that paint? I also added a bit of Burnt Sienna to match the mix you used for the background.
Thank you so, so much for the inspirational thoughts and for sharing your knowledge, always.
    All the best.

Your owl is lovely and fluffy ♥
You really are patient to make 2 studies before the final painting without getting bored. The result is stunning anyway, and it seems to be a method that is more satisfying for you.

This was very useful, as I’ve endeavoured to paint my first bird as well. I too struggled with certain areas where I was unsure if negative painting was the way to go, or soldier on with light wash overlays (and possibly risk overworking the area). The latter was what happened. I’ve since gone back to my painting after watching this tutorial with the hope that I can fix the problem area now that I’ve watched your treatment of feathers. Love your work, and I learn so much from your tutorials!

Thank you so much for your honesty with the struggle that watercolor painting can be! Sometimes I feel that I am always in correction mode, which can be so frustrating especially since I have essential tremor which causes shaking. Sometimes I think that I must be crazy to even attempt painting and then some kind of magic happens and I come up with a painting that is fairly decent (for me) and so I proceed. I think that knowing that you too struggle somehow helps me to continue on, especially when I see the beautiful work that you have done. I have only been painting for about 1 year and I just hope that after 9 years I will be a little bit approaching your skill! Thank you for sharing with us!!💕

You make it look easy. Your struggles turn out wonderfully, but I hear you loud and clear. Never REALLY knowing if the work will turn out is like that guillotine hanging over the table until the end. Not like oils at all. But I agree with you, maybe that’s why it is SUCH a fascinating medium. Hard to conquer and yet fun to play with. I love this little owl, especially the eyes and how loose you went with the feathers. One day I might graduate to loose... still holding on to my details, but using more wet into wet now. Yay Louise!

I started water color recently but have taught various art subjects before...and yes the best way is to jump on in, start at simple projects, don’t worry if it looks terrible, complete the painting as some parts will work and then you learn by analyzing what goes wrong!
