BMW M5 Is Power & Speed in an Unassuming Frame

- In 1989, Randy Balingit-Hartmann bought the first BMW M5 brought to San Diego and has owned it ever since. As someone on the shy side, Randy wanted a car that fit his personality-one that was fast and powerful yet unassuming. In all its unassuming four-door glory the E28 M5 is often overlooked, but this sedan packs the same amount of power as Ferrari 308 GT and if not respected will surprise you in the turns of your favorite road. Randy has had this car through the ups and downs of life and has put over 400,000 miles on it with no major problems. Dedicated to the M5 for life, Randy will continue driving it the way it was meant to be driven with its detuned racing engine-like he stole it.

This is a touching video. People say that you can't love a car. It's only metal and plastic. I think this video proves that statement wrong.
Matti Eloranta bmw: the ultimate driving experience
I truly believe you can fall in love with a car but, tend to agree with some who don't get it. To me the M5 is just a machine. I let people eat and drink inside the M5. I let some even test drive her so they understand my passion for her. To me, the connection to my M5 is the people and experiences owning it has exposed me to. The friends I have made along the way...the experiences and opportunities are what connect me to the M5. Of course the machine itself has to be loved...but again most would not understand that type of love right?
There’s something about cars that come to life when you truly appreciate them. People that don’t see it, just don’t see it.
calvhoe totally agree and couldn’t have said it better myself.
Matti Eloranta hell yeah, this video really hit home. Agreed with the message.
I commented on this video 2 years ago when I owned an e39 m5. Now I own the proper m5, the e28 that originally made me fall in love with BMW engineering.
My dad always drove e28's in his early days, ranging from 525i's, 525e's and 528i's. The original M5 was always sort of ''his dream car''. I hated them back in the day since they looked very outdated compared to the other cars that where on the road at that time period and he was always mending them, since some of the one's he owed always broke down. But over the last few years i started to create a small love for them and every time now when i spot one, i look at it and admire it.
Kolter Kalberg how’s the experience been?
I'm born '99
and I do feel some respect for the E28 although E39 would be the car for me to live with if I had a chance to chose so.
But most likely once I'll be making enough money to afford one. It'll prolly be too rare to get one if there will be any for sale at all.
CryBite I feel you, bro! We are going to be enthusiasts of the same generation.
Both transcend “great car”
"i drive this car like i stoled it, every single day"
I loved that sentence too, this guy drives a fast car like it SHOULD be driven.
stoled isnt a word. Am pretty sure he said stole
believe me, i noted that quote down in my journal!
Nice video...I love old Bmws have had so many ....if not my wife would still drive e30 or e34...they were built to last...and even today are so enjoyable to drive....got a latest 5 series 300 horse power and luxurious but this don't come near the old school BMW....
Peter Dabrowski ain't that the truth..
I've seen a lot of car channels but this channel,THIS FUCKING CHANNEL!!!!!!! Is car porn (and with a good story)
how about donut media they have good content too
Andre krispy lol
the more you are into cars the more you get from these videos you have to have that unrelenting passion for automobiles to really "get" it. you feel that powerful emotion well inside you when you see things this.
Well, being high helps a bit.
dude YES
Now theres a guy who really loves his m5
a few years ago I met this guy. a steering wheel refurbisher in Germany switched our steering wheels. he got mine and I his (you see it in the video)
he drove down to swap it out and shot the breeze for 20 mns. real mellow guy. the video doesn't do the 5 justice. it's even prettier in person.
Nice story! I feel the same way about my '02 E46 M3 I purchased for $58.5K from the dealer. I just kept it stock - 39K mi as of now because I walk to work everyday. At 51 yrs. old, this is plenty enough car for me and I'll never sell it.
+Nick Zhu they are cheap
a True BMW Driver.
Okay
Deinish ™ Yup, always keeping way over the speed limit...
You mean he doesn't use his turn signals
You mean he sits way too far in the back, almost not reaching the steering wheel any more
Exactly, Old school Bimmer are a true BMW drivers...
I truly enjoy seeing an original owner of a car, still loving it like the day it was new this many years later. Great video!
this is going to be me with my FoST 15 years from now
"when you have something that makes you feel good no matter how many bad things are happening in your life, why wouldn't you keep it?" - I regret selling my EVO :'( .. great video !
I crossed paths with Randy's M5 last night. Immediately recognized it from the license plate and wheels. It's a beautiful machine and the straight six howl is epic.
This video was awesome! No BS music and just straight up driving, engine sounds and awesome background story. Great editing. This is how you make a car video!
I think it takes commitment to keep and maintain a car like this for so many years. I mean, this is a great car hands down but to not be seduced by newer models with curvier shapes promising more of that "ultimate driving machine" magic is highly admirable to say the least. Maybe this is the kick I need to be content with and look after the things I have instead of trying to jump ship every time a newer model shows up.
moochincrawdad I know exactly how you feel
+moochincrawdad Beautifully said man. I could not agree more with you. And like Cheetah said, this sort of mind set should apply to everything in your life.
A great story. There can't be many one owner from new E28 M5's out there, certainly not a daily driver with 400k miles on it. I'm so glad it is still driven every day too, as it should be, and hasn't become a garage/trailer queen as has happened to so many rare older cars. Still my favorite M5 of all time.
400,000miles!!
This was beautiful to watch. Made my day. Thank you guys. Great work.
Beautiful story, especially the part about "good memories" and how it makes you smile every time you drive it. My father was the second owner of the one I have and brought to Australia, and during my cancer treatment as a teen, my father would drive me to Stanford for tests everyday for a year, and that car cradled me back and forth during some pretty nasty stuff. I agree with Randy, I'll never let it go.
This car is a magical memory for me. I was 16 yrs old and got my first job as a porter at a BMW dealership in the Chicago NW suburbs. The owner trusted me with his cars and let me learn to drive stick on his 88 M5. It was black with mint tan leather interior. He put these kick ass Racing Dynamics mag wheels and sticky tires on. I drove around town in that thing blaring Bob Marley music. Also got to drive his orange 635 csi with gold bbs wheels, 67 Corvette stingray convertible and aftermarket AC Cobra. No wonder I love cars. Would buy one today if I had the money.
This is the only channel which is able to capture the feelings between a car guy and his car.
I put 880k miles on my e36 M3! Love seeing you drive an M5 the same way! Wish I could make a trip to cali in my E36... keep driving it like you stole it! Good job man!
the guys interviewed on this car channel dont just have car stories, they have love stories of the cars and the families and friends who helped them reach their dreams, truly inspiring !
At 14 I saw my first E28 M5, I immediately fell in love with the look and sound, an understated beast of a car that really made a deep impression on me. At 21 working my first BMW tech job I had the luck to finally drive one. I’ll never forget that first drive, the S38 engine is a mechanical work of art that is immensely satisfying to rev out.
I’ve since driven virtually every M car BMW has built, obviously most are much faster than the E28, but none are as joyful to drive.
Love that car, Randy !
My first BMW was an E12 530i (in the days before M-cars). I rebuilt the engine (dyno`d at 266 RWHP), and installed a full Alpina suspension. Solid as a rock and went like a scalded cat. Wish I still had it. Do NOT sell that car....ever !
I remember when it first came out. I have the Pirelli poster with the M5 on it! And I still have it!! I salute you for still keeping it! She's gorgeous. I only wish I had kept my 1972 BMW 2002, that is my only regret in life!
Everything about this video from the M5 down to the music used in the video captures pure emotion
The Great Era of the Sharknosed BMW !
I had a 1 out of a Million Girlfriend, and her Father owned a M5 & a Daimler !
I was so amazed by the M5 , just by the Looks, race seats in the rear...ect.
35 Years later I get the Same Special Feeling, checking out the latest X7 M Edition, no markings ..I thought it was a new X3/5 M.
Car was standing at entrance of my work , me and 2 colleagues checked it out for over 20 minutes, everything was amazing, Lazer Headlamps, Breaks, Vents, Tailpipes.
have my 88 M3 now for 13yrs and luv every single time I take it out in da sun.
It was because I happened across this video, never knowing of Petrolicious, that I bought a 1987 535IS (E28). All things stated in this and the M535I videos are true and I am happy with its performance.
+Jacob Leis About 10 years ago I had a 1986 535is. It had a 5 speed and it was a great car. I miss it. Good luck with yours.
WOW! Beautiful story. And he has BBS RKs on his car. They are really hard to find. Very nice.
Yeah i love my RK's. My subaru brought them from the factory and people usually criticize them but i don't understand why anyone would dislike them
I saw that also! 👍🏼
I have BB2 2-part RK 512s on my E30 convertible. Amazing wheels. Very late 80s. 👊🏼
I watch this once in a while and go back to the glory days of Petrolicious. Such a romantic video
running up 400k miles on the car and keeping in such good shape - that man did it right. so happy to see his joy for it!
This video opened my eyes. Own a E46 M3 myself and I don't plan on selling it. Although its a mass produced vehicle, I don't think there is another e46 m3 that can satisfy me the same way. Great video!
would love to see your car on video and photo
***** I'll keep you updated buddy! I recently took photos of it at the snake in mulholland. And a few buddies of mine are working on a short video as well.
GBVendettaGB Nice!! hmu when its done :D
The e46 CSL is a beautiful car, always wanted one of those.
Sounds sooooooooo nice
I had one of these (1988) for 12 years as my daily driver and was hell on wheels with it the whole time. The car will do around 100 mph in 3rd gear, max 150 mph at red line in 5th. A Corvette eater. These cars were the closest thing to a perfect car ever made. I still miss it.
Back in the Days, this Car was a Supercar, total production of 2,191 units
It really made a big impression when U looked at it,different than with a nowadays M5.
The Design, and the Colour made it look very aggressive back then, and the Interior was all perfect, back seats also.
A true 4 seater race car,a Monster with no traction control!
My Girlfriends Dad owned one.I still remember her saying how scared she was in the Car when he gave her a lift.
Great video. Never sell it, enjoy for life.
My dad sold me his e46 330i and I feel the same way as this guy. Just a car worth keeping rather than trying to have the newest of everything.
A good dad would have given the car as a present to his son. A good son would have bought dad a new car as a present. Wtf relationship is that to buy something from dad :)
if we get things given to us for free it'd more of a punishment because it wouldn't be appreciated as much for the majority
@@jamstar6682 Well, if you give a car to your spoiled son, who is a drug addict, coach potato and does not give a shit about anything yes. Otherwise it sounds a bit awkward for me.
My old neighbor and as "shy" as he says he is, he's still happy to stop and talk to you at great lengths about this gorgeous machine. So cool to see this video on your channel and pop up on Jalopnik. Randy is no joke, dude keeps this thing (and a Ducati 900 ss) in tip top shape and does all his maintenance out of what would be a closet and an assigned parking spot. Virtual high five Randy!
Keeping a car for many years like an old friend is admirable. Kudos to this man.
I watch this when you originally put it out I hope he still has the car which I'm sure he does he might have only wanted to be keeping up with a modern-day car but not many modern-day cars sound that good
This is my favorite Petrolicious. Wonderful car and story.
I own an E30. 325is. It is my first car and I love it. It runs perfectly, it has new wheels and tires, new suspension, all fluids changed, and it still runs like a dream even when the odo stopped at 200k miles :)
This Car has some of the best memories of my life. The same year my father died. We went on Holiday and I met a girl, we went to sleep every night and I held her hand, we were 12. Her father had the E28 and we drove around the coast. I fell in love with woman and cars. Still smiling about that time.
That car sound just gave me chills! :)
love this video. in a few days i will be buying back the first car i ever bought, a 1988 535is. still cant believe i sold it. thankfully i happened to find it, although some drifters got ahold of it...
This is why I love cars, they inspire passion in people like few things can
The joy i get from this video, I cant even explain. The enthusiasts out there will know this feeling. I have a 1986 528E BMW and she is my baby. I am on a search to find a M5 for all the reasons this gentleman acknowledges. You defiantly have my respect sir :)
GREAT story, a true car enthusiast. Good for you Randy!
Great video
Holly moly, what a story, what a car!!!!! Is this real? That beast looks and sound soooo good . I am more fan of 328 E21 , but man this car is sooo sick and he is the first and only owner. U guys just got a new subscriber! !!great story
I received an e30 318i as a hand-me-down from my family when my uncle died. I had always felt that it was a car that was looking better as it aged, but didn't fully appreciate it at first. Old and a bit run down. I would sell it after I got my finances in order and found something I really wanted. A year (and a couple grand) later I can't really see parting with it. Ever. Im 35 and Ive owned many cars but when Im coming out of work and see that white e30 in the lot it FEELS like MY car more than any Ive ever owned. Somehow everything about it is 'just right'.
THE best M5. Period.
I am a Ford-guy, but this M5 is one of my favourite cars ever. I salute you sir, you also seem like a cool dude for not tuning the heck out of it or destroying it like a boy racer. Also, this is a BMW from an era when they were really good looking, modern BMW's are just awful, ugliest cars on the road.
Captain stud
You sir, are just a troll.
Captain stud
I have to disagree. Yes, old cars (except French and italian ones) have less electrical problems. But compare any old cars interior to a similar new cars interior. There is no contest, really. One thing i can agree on, new Mercedes are horrible, unreliable moneypits.
Captain stud
Most new Mercs are horrible. Lots of issues, and very expensive to repair. I like (european) Fords, because they are always very nice to drive. If you only want a car that is as reliable as possible, there is only one way, and that is Japanese.
actually bmw took fords designers at that time to create the bmw M5, funny.
หหหุุปุุกกเตึึ
Old BMWs are some of the purest driving machines out there...I was recently lucky enough to purchase a mint IMSA E30 racing car and I am having the most fun with it out of any newer car I've owned. Just simple, brilliant machine
"If I could be buried in it I would be buried in it" very few will put in, keep putting in and love without wanting what's new by modern standards. 🚗 💨 ❤️
cool dude and cool car
lovely lovely story
It's my 7th time I watched this video...
The car stayed constant not even friends do that... The passion between machine and men is something that can't be described.. This video only gives us e% emotion of what he really feels for this car...
I love this video!!! I share those EXACT same feelings about my BMW. She is a 1991 318is that has been completely modified over the 22+ years and I still smile every time I take her out, which is still daily. Through college, grad school, med school and several jobs & girlfriends. She has been one of the true constants in my life. Continue to enjoy.
This is what it's all about holding on to old cars for ever. I don't understand the need for new cars. As much as I don't like BMW it's a car with great storey.
Why dont you like BMW's?
People who drive them are annoying and drive them because the emblem and majority of them re ugly. I'm talking about the last 10 year and so. Majority of people with bmw's can't do an oil il change or change their tire. The people who drive them have ruined them for me basically. Not everyone is noting just 9 of 10 BMW drivers are goofs.
toffee rado you drive your prius or honda and go shoping to wallmart hoping you are good.
Excuse me? No but I use to work in European automotive shop and one day we had 7 broken e46 bmw's, more bmw's came in than Porsche Audi vw or Benz. And you drive a bmw and make stupid ass assumptions like that and that's why I don't like BMW. 98% of you guys drive BMW for the badge on the hood the other 2% didn't comment.
toffee rado I remowed bmw badge from hood and trunk, on wheels too no emblem. But i like how it drives and makes me feel.
I wish i could find one in that condition :/
ShowersNeiked Too much miles doe.
Kaisuke971 it have a lot of miles but he had the motor rebuild or new one out in at some point.. Hope he get new or rebuild transmission when it go out and rear end to
+Kaisuke971 Never too many miles in an e28. i just sold my e34 535 with over 500,000 miles, with ever seam and weld in perfect order. It reamains in the family. That's what BMW build quality was...once upon a time. I now own a low mileage e39 540 MSport. The quality is nowhere close.
Francis Powell you don't mind answering, how much did it go for?
you can...for money
What a beautiful story, I feel this very same way about my M3. No matter what is going on in life, I get in, start it up and for that time I am truly happy !
Growing up my father had a 1988 M5. My cousin now owns it and had it fully restored. To this day it is one of the best looking/fun to drive cars out there hands down.
I like how he says that he bought the car new and then goes on to tell us he had to bring his Dad in to help him buy it. I would respect people more if they just straight up said "My Dad bought me my first car because I was young without enough money".
He said exactly what he did. He financed it and paid for it. He said his Dad helped with down payment. What a horrible thing. Get a life and be less jealous when you do.
E34 M5 and E28 M5 . But the E34 is a little Better
Better looking that's for sure,and whit 3.8 s38 engine it is faster,but e34 M5 whit 3.6 is slower then e28 M5 :)
Dimitri Smith I love the e39 M5 also.
Dimitri Smith I prefer the E28 actually... But damn the E60 is the thing :O
Kaisuke971 yeah that V10 is legendary
e28 definitely looks better than e34
This is when, you take care of a car you car takes care of you. Dude, the old m5 are amazing especially their inline 6 engines.
Machine and man, a match made in heaven. This speaks to all of us that have such passion for automobiles or the engineering that makes these machines so special. I have a Bimmer that invokes these kinds of feelings. Walking to the garage door to look out at her, can't wait for the next drive. She is my 330ci ZHP 6MT "Ingrid" and I am in love.
ps 400,000 miles.. thats what an M5 deserves people, to be driven!
Whats the song on this video?
This video put a big smile on my face. Thanks Randy, I hope you treasure your M5 for the rest of your life and pass it on your next generation :)
These old M cars are the purest driver's cars on the planet. What a great story.. Definitely my favorite video on RUclips right now.
I've always wondered, when people race through canyons, they cross over to other lanes, come upon slower vehicles, push predictable handling to the edge, are they not endangering others and what is the implied ethic.
I am 99% sure that the road was closed for the shooting... That said, crossing over to the other lane is wrong in any case...
non responsive to the questions
For me I look well ahead. You know if a car is coming the other way by instant and follow through. Your only going to be over the line for a split second, then let your car drift back in your lane. Too many ppl drive with a view of 20ft in front of their cars. For those who know how to drive enthusiastically, they look 200 ft. listen 150 ft and sense 50 ft around their cars. Most will never get it. It isn't something you understand.
Sorry mate, but racing is not about a deathwish. F1 is here today thanks to many people, not the least of which is Sir Jackie Stewart. If your friend dies right in front of you and somebody tells you "Keep racing" and that doesn't affect you in some way... I don't know what to say. Same goes for NASCAR, Rallying, Bike Racing and so on...
And if you don't think your safety is not important, that's your problem. But you always have to think about other road users. ALWAYS!!! Even if you are breaking the speed limit...
Everette Singleton You're the first person I've read who's got it right. There are many curves on a twisty road that have double solid lines, but you can see ahead far enough to know whether or not it's safe to take the inside line for a brief moment. If you don't have the experience, you won't get it.
he should tint the windows black
No he shouldn't-cool car that as it sits...standard wheels and silver calipers and itd be perfect for me lol
Tint looks like ass on old cars
T.J. T agreed
Great story, your beemer will run and run and run! keep it maintained and it will last for years!! I have an old Porsche 928 GTS 4 from 1989 and I love it so much.Quick and comfortable.
I loved this story like many other clips from this wonderful channel. True enthusiasts seem to cherish an understated but well-made car that they keep running for many years to come. Thanks for putting this together!
find an e34!
i like the e34 m5 better...
Cool, wow, awesome
Man! Just gorgeous. Hard to find people that actually have a TRUE passion for cars. Please don't change it.
the best part about 80's German cars is that you can drive them like you stole them for years and if anything it helps them live longer. I kept my Porsche 944 way over 400k miles and sold it running like a champ
"Detune racing engine.."
Man!
The sound of it in the end of the video lit the fire in me..
awesome story, 400k miles of pure bliss!
Videos about cars but... So much emotion. Very well done. Couldn't be better.
I love the fact that he's had it so long..... being he's the ONLY OWNER of this car imagine how many ppl tried to buy it off him and were DENIED..... 400k on the chassis and rear Diff
..... ????!!!!...... Beautiful absolutely Beautiful 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I still come back every now and then to watch this video along with the e30 m3 video. Just love these machines.
Im not one to post comments but recently these Petrolicious videos are really inspiring me to get not only my dream car but my first car a car that i will love and pour my heart and soul into and one that i will keep for many years to come.
I applaud this man. AS an owner of 2 e30 M3's and a 190E 16v I can appreciate his passion for 80s Bavarian pocket rockets! Love the video!
This is by far one of the coolest car stories I've heard on RUclips in a while
I had to replay the section where he said it had 400,000 miles on it. What an incredible driver and car.
With all seriousness--a better love story than Twilight. What a fantastic story of a car-owner and his car.
Bond between a car and driver is unreal. It made me very happy to watch this.
I love the way he stays compassionate about his car the first M5. No matter what happened, he stuck to his M5. Chapeau!
Throughout all that time and all that financial strife, my M5 was one of the only things in my life that stayed constant." ... "So.. when you have something that makes you feel good no matter how many bad things are happening in your life, why wouldn't you keep it?"
Call me a sap but it brought tears to my eyes. Love this video!
I was thinking about saying something but the more I looked into the comments the more I realized it has all been said.
A giant thumbs up from me bro !
Respect !
This film is brilliant. That footage through the hills with the taps open properly were magic! Love it, great story too. He needs to change his plans to keep the car exactly how it is because it looks PERFECT.
WOW what a love story. Beautiful car
Thank you Petrolicious for showing us people and cars like that.
More than 400k miles. That's dedication.
I'm so envious of this guy. How many cars have we had that we loved so much and ended up selling just because. He didnt; his love for his car so strong. I want that....
Respect! My brother used to have an E28 528i back in '84/'85 and now i want one for myself. I always liked BMW but only the older models are really beautiful. Who knows, maybe i'm lucky and can get one some day.
Wow....plain and simple...just a awesome petrolhead
