It’s among the oldest questions because we humans are rightly obsessed by ultimate origins. Cosmologists can now explain back to the first 10-36 second of our universe - with the theory of “cosmic inflation”, which is what put the “bang” into the Big Bang. What is recent thinking on the beginning of the universe?

It is rather hard to assume that a concept like entropy can be used to describe the evolution of the universe even from incipient stages . A concept introduced in mid 19th century that dealed with thermodynamics . Today we are dealing with dark matter and dark energy which we don't know what they are yet and we can't guess where they will fit in with thermodynamics.

That last idea of a mirror Universe is interesting, but I don't see how you would ever know it was real. The issue is Math can explain a large set of options by changing the variables, but that does not imply or mean that those states exist. We cannot know they are real in other words, as we would never interact with those parts of the multiverse. There is a lot of metaphysics in this that I could see being possible, but I guess application is my real question. Where is the application for this? How do you know it is real?
Fun to think about though, I can see why he does it.

Whenever a scientist repeats , "good question , good question" , he/she is in trouble explaining a core feature of a theory.
Besides the highly problematic assignment of probabilities to "everything imaginable happening , does happen" scenario in the infinite spawning universe to the different ill- defined notions of "something from nothing", this is looking more like turtles upon turtles ad infinitum.
And where exactly is the infinite energy coming from for the generation of infinite universes?
Drawing a one to one correspondence between purely mathematical notioqn and physical reality is highly problematic. For example, a mathematical notion of a point has no correspondence in physical reality. So, when we say a point particle in physics, we mean for all practical purposes, let's ignore the dimensionality of the particle . However, this is only an approximation. No one would jump to a one to one correspondence and say nature has zero dimensional particles.
Similarly, while the mathematical notion of infinity does lead to interesting mathematical results, it would be incorrect to draw a one to one correspondence between the mathematical notion and the physical one. Mathematics can be used to model, but never be used to draw an ontological equality. It would be a category mistake in the Aristrolean sense.
An initial inflaton field cannot have infinite energy as potentiality. Even guth has acknowledged that the universes are "ultimate free lunch" in this theory because one has negative infinite gravitational energy to balance. This seems like an accounting gimmick worse than the subprime loan accounting of 2009 financial crisis. Starting out with the implied assumption of potentiality of infinite energy is like postulating an infinitely omnipotent omnipresent, omniprecient God.

I personally believe our pocket universe is simply a weird little run off of matter and energy. I hypothesize that understanding what our universe is and what it is in/connected to (also linked to other dimensions) could be solved with essentially zooming out. I believe we are the ant crawling across the floor unaware of bigger perception that the human may have. Obviously like most armchair philosophy this is simple, and I will be honest I have far from a full understanding on any of this science on the data level. Its honestly like those trippy infinite loop videos that just keep zooming in.... what zoom level are we on?

As a layman on this issue, I'm confused. Doesn't this still require that *both* arrows of time have a common *thermodynamic* beginning "in the middle" of this hour glass (for lack of a better way of phrasing it)? Aaron Wall insists that this "would raise the same sorts of philosophical problems that any other beginning would" (I'm paraphrasing, but that's close to verbatim). So then how do we explain *that* beginning?

I really doubt that there was a big bang. Maybe a controlled expansion. . It appears to look like a big bang. But if a pendulum is pushed from a half way starting point it might feel that the pendulum came from a higher position or potential energy.

    • @johncampbell9216
      @johncampbell9216 Год назад

I agree. There was no big bang and there is no evidence for it. Sure, there is a general inflation evident, but there is no need to invoke mystical forces to explain it. As far as I’m concerned, it is as simple as an extension of the energy released by galaxies, as a result of the energy of the stars within them. The galaxies are pushing each other apart. This not only explains inflation, it explains all the other obvious phenomena, like galaxy collisions, which cannot occur as a result of an all-encompassing background force.

I like to keep things simple so I compare the univer to Lego land. Now how did Lego land begin? It is another world/universe in a sense. Before the Lego brick was invented there was no Lego land. So in the beginning there was tiny bits of plastic(matter)and there was heat (energy) involved and there was molds (space) and there was pressure (inflation ). Now someone designed these components and systems and put everything into motion starting a process of creating Lego Land. What was there before Lego land that created it? Could it have made itself? Given millions of years could it evolve by chance? By natural selection? What are the chances of it ever happening without intelligent input? If we can't come to understand what is needed to create Lego Land, I think we should stop trying to understand how the univers began. None of the Lego Land people wonder who created them: I wonder why!

I think as far as knowledge goes we are doomed because in the end we have to take 'something' to be 'existing always'. No further questions asked!!
This thing can be God or (laws + energy). After we have reached this stage, we can't question anymore. This inexplicable certainty is the fate of all human quest for knowledge.
In this sense, everything (whether God or ever existing laws+energy) is Supernatural because both these options defy logic/explanation.

Big bang was a beautiful way to transfer religious concept of creation by intelligent creator to a language of science. Inflation is most obvious, intuitive way to imagine how Big bang could look like, with regards to what is experience based logic for a human mind and without violating any basic physical laws. Scientist are gathering many kinds of data, some fit in recently perfected hypothetical model, other are not anything conclusive or at least doesn't directly contradict idea of inflation. So model is probably not how it really happened, but is consistent enough to give researchers some kind of theoretical backbone they can follow and organize their research around it. They don't need a better idea, tools and methodology will improve with time and gathered data will lead to new ideas in their own, without any distracting ideology.

Whatever Universe was before was materialized, energy had to be sucked from it's source to a new dimension, creating space time in the process. Could be anything else really, but if we want to continue with materialism, we should conclude patch of something was exhausted by inflation or equalized by pressure of nothing nothing in this dimension. This would mean no multiverse is possible, because there was nothing left inside a singularity source. But if Universe just spilled some stuff, there must be regions of space where both dimensions are still open and mix together from an infinite source, at least i can't see any obvious reason how flow of inflation could seal the leak.

He seems like a super smart scientist, but then he says crazy stuff like infinite universes, or infinite infinities, or worries because inflation won't stop making universes. These ideas are so childish and stupid that only the super smart could believe in them.

    Oh , that's easy to answer .
One day , God , The Creator of everything and all knowing and seeing got bored. He got bored being alone in this black void He was in .
So , He decided to summon a fallen angel he used to have in His dominion, Satan , The Devil .
God said , you Satan and I , God The Creator , will have a fight in a new place I will create called the Universe.
I will cast you into the depths of fire in this new Universe and I will create life and man , and everything else ,into the rest of this Universe, so I can never be bored again.
So God got bored and decided to have some entertainment , and created to Universe , period!!!!
No need for all this science and physics , simple.

Those of us who press the dislike button know that however highly educated people are they still have to guess how the universe began and they ignore the only eye witness, the Creator.

Nietzsche proclaimed God was dead some 100 years ago, society has become more interested in God than ever. Nietzsche was wrong. It was the atheists who hated the big-bang theory last century, not the theists, moreover, it should be stated that your assumption that religious people are stupid and unscientific goes without saying is factually false. The last hundred years of Nobel prizes have seen 65% Christian winners, 20% Jewish believers and less than 7% that declared themselves atheists or agnostics, it was a combined category. Aside from this, most of the atheistic and agnostic winners won in literature, not science.

This is a fairy tale with absolutely no evidence. These guys don't know what space is or what time is or where matter came from but they speculate on how the universe began. Don't you find that extremely arrogant?
