My digging rules 1) Nudity on the cover means it's going to be good 2) Drums on the cover, another good sign 3) Look for thin grooves in the middle of songs (drum break!) 4) Hit that dark basement with the cheap records
@@madimakes Oh my god, so many times but I guess that's the fun part of digging. You really have to earn those rare magical moments. I always loved rescuing one tiny incredible moment on an otherwise forgettable album and turning it into an entire song. It feels like fate or a gift from the universe when that happens.
I'm 45 and i remember It' was amazing the amount of equipment you needed back in the day. Just to even buy a bare bones MPC cost like $4,000 dollars. Now in 2024, in a click of a button every processor ever made is at my disposal, unlimited tracks and memory. Crazy right? You was lucky if you could afford a 8mg simm chip. No need for buying records and taking up space. It's all on a 6 TB SSD. Weeeeewho...No need for a huge mixing board again burning up the light bill. All I have at home is a laptop, my MPC Key 37 and studio monitors. With a 4 TB SSD full of sounds from everything E-MU ever made since Ensoniq days to Proteus 2000 days. Every module. Plus many more. If all the things I have n ow on hardrives were to be used back in the day as hardware, it would cost over $2 million dollars. Technology is awesome.
I'm 45. I've always kinda been poor. I used to just make tapes of loops bc I had a multi effects bass pedal that could loop like up to like no more than 8 seconds or something. You could overdub n overdub n get crazy layers n textures, n then play over them, but it was nothing big. Id have access to a computer only sometimes, so id end up using fruity loops demo, feeling my heart sink when I got a good grove n the computer froze.... Etc. Yea. Now, I have a decent computer, Akai mpk 249, a K.O. II, an Rz-1... I just need maybe like a lil mixer for the external machines, ya know, maybe buy the new FL studio instead of my pirated version 12, haha, a few vsts, some monitor speakers... Oh. And my bass out of the pawn shop. Lol. Im rambling, but yea. It's almost bittersweet bc I know I would've been blown away by having what I have now back in the day. Eh. It's cool tho. I still get down. It's still work to make something good.
This is so dope. Back in the 90s I was sneaky. I never went record shopping or sampled from vinyl. I got all my samples off the radio. I constantly recorded music off the jazz stations. When I went to school, to work, to a party, when I went to bed. I had my tapes on record. And when I had a moment I went through them and kept the snippets I liked. Thinking back, it was a lot of work. People would always ask where I got my samples, but I'd never tell them. Lol!
very rare you get to hear the absolute masters give insight to their process and in the studio making the magic happen. Godfather Don is my fave, as he's massively underrated and a true scholar of music. he does jazz now and even dominates that.
Such love and respect for the source material.. I love this.. It was labelled as exploitation, but its all love. And if the record sells and theres a legal recourse the original artist gets paid. Love it.
This is the single most important video on RUclips. I say that without any hint of sarcasm or irony. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me view this once again.
LOL, you've got to be joking. A HIP HOP video is the most important video on YT??? Well, I guess that MIGHT be possible if one sets their standards in life to the absolute lowest they can go.
This is so beautiful. Back then, my poor ass couldn't afford the equipment but was obsessed with how and who was making these records. Now, as a poor ass adult, I can at least afford a cheap mpc and live out my fantasy as a kid and make beats. 😂 And I realized it takes forever to come up with something, but it's so worth it when it comes together.
Around 84/85 I came across a small shop on 6th. around 25 or so. Not a real record store as such. In a crate there were around a dozen or so albums of M.L.K. speech/hymns of the Washington rally. I bought one for 50 odd cents. Tried to play it over some "dance" tracks, okay but I wasn't skilled enough to pull it off big time. "We hold these truths to be self evident". Oh how I smiled when that beauty hit. My favourite find, I shall noe go and play the "B" side, one of the greatest mass congregation singing out there.
And meanwhile, my lazy ass just scours random youtube channels to find the gold samples. I wish I was able to dig with other people and make beats together like this
I use RUclips too but I buy records for when I get a player. Got 9 so far and all under $5, have some I can’t find online so I don’t even know what they sound like. Can’t wait to finally sample them.
And also, the wildest shit is that they spent all their money on reup and never truly made any profit. Just like a lifelong crackhead still searching for that first high. Spending sometimes thousands of dollars a week buying records. Now we get em on RUclips for free. Peace to technology Lord.
Godfather Don opinionated ... love to hear someone so into their *craft* and not whether or not they can "go platinum"...good grief, these kids don't now. every beat on this doc...released/unreleased/hard to find....all SLAP...if i was a rhymer how could you *not* want to get on these joints...ion even rap and got me fake rhymin haha
