I love people like that "Bobs" clerk...quirky, "non hip-hop", (often white) dudes, ...record nerds, gear and electronics heads, engineer and studio geeks, that don't seem predisposed to liking the music, but end up, through circumstance and association, somehow "getting IT" on a very deep level, and often end up quietly being active contributors. I have met a bunch of em....
Word! Many engineers helped dudes learn how to do their own beats. Before everyone had an sp or mp good samplers were expensive af and often dudes would bring records through and have the engineer loop it. Bob Power imo is almost just as equal as Tip Ali cause he helped tribe realize their sound. The Roots too.
This stream of conversation, makes me think that there might be an idea for a documentary right there...interviewing these kinda "nerdy/uncool" musicology, audiophile, electronics, and studio rat guys, who have been there at key moments in the development of hip-hop, house, and other genres, and have kept it "all about the music" without ever trying to receive credit for their contributions. Would be a cool doc
The EARS that these guys have are amazing. True diggers can hear a beat in an opera, gospel, country, acid rock, ska, or any type of music. Anybody can loop a popular hit song and call themselves making a beat. These guys are the essence of hip hop. Keep diggin'
This 20 minutes gem is a time travel machine to this era that was so great, these are real musicians, poets, humble and genuine. This is here is how I love HIPHOP 🏆
I got a crate full of records in my closet ! Haven’t made a beat in so long but seeing this makes me wanna get back to it! I have a MPC 2000 but I really wanna SP1200 but to save money I’ll settle for Isla Instrument’s S2400 for now
nothing beats tthe sound of vinyl on a system..... miss the days of locking down the record shop... if u was a good dj then they kick everyone out an you had the shop for a hour or 2
Thank you for making this great documentary! I lived in NY in 94-97 as a jazz sax player and remember discovering HipHop culture and still mixing jazz n hiphop in my mind and beats . This footage is very inspiring and is already a Classic in itself! Keep up your great work
The Alchemist. Roc Marciano, Conway The Machine, Larry June, Currency, Domo Genesis, Armand Hammer, Your Old Droog, Rome Streets, Earl, Boldy James, School Boy Q, Benny the Butcher, Freddie Gibbs, Action Bronson..... There's hella good hip hop going on.
@js78910 he didn't ask for u to name a bunch of rappers like a nerd, he knows hip hops not dead that people still do hip hop.. but he says make it great again like back in tha day when real hip hop was playing on radio like Kool g Rap n De La Soul.. back when no one was fakin tha funk n doing expiremntal stuff wt hip hop n keepin it fresh
WHEN U DIGG FOR AS LONG AS I HAVE. YOUR EARS START TO GROW LIKE FLOWERS. AND THEY GROW INTO A THING OF BEAUTY!!! YOU GROW EARS THAT BECOME BETTER FOR LISTENING PURPOSES ALSO, NOT JUST FOR BREAKS.
As a hip hop lover, artist, producer, i am so inspired! I want to join this world of hip hop. internet is cool to find things, but i want to become a crate digger myself! I feel like so much more will be learned
It is my friend, you meet alot of diggers who have similar music taste, it's great for networking to find gigs, or sessions and records that are rare , it's Toys R Us all over again!
@@andrewomble3976 RE: your response to @insulin801 - it was a suggestion to OP from @insulin801 to hit up local store, not something that he himself had just done .. ;)
Commenting so this will hopefully pop up in more peoples feed. Got the VHS still, with the Milano song as the outro - this version is nice too. Hard to believe that Buck, Show, Diamond and all of the BMZ are 30 years older 😳 But then again, so are we all. Shout out to a very scruffy looking AG, literally putting pen to pad here.. 😂
Looot of good takeaways from this video. One that took me by surprise was when the guy said he needs the drums to replicate real drums; you shouldn't just sample all over for the sake of saying your beat it complex... It still has to come together and sound good, feel cohesive
LONG LIVE VINYL, DITC,BEAT MINERZ, SOUL BROTHER #1, RETROGOTT AND ALL OVERSEAS KILLERS ON TILT....I LOVE ALL YA, AND ANYONE I FORGOT...TRUE ROMANCE RADIO!!!!!!!!!!
I love this documentary! Amongst other things, it brought Godfather Don to my attention for the first time. Such a bright spirit! Thank you for your work and for making it available on RUclips!
I had this weird deja vu feeling watching, so this is kinda differently edited version of "199x. Artform. Beat. Diggin. Documentary. VHSRip" that is on archive or & in better quality, of course
Yes google does help - f'k'n aye it really changes the game but many of us still go out and dig "blind" weekly regardless of the internets grand services.! hahaha We've just got multiple ways to hunt now ! Thing is too man that because the industry has changed and many EP's/LP's/singles are being sold & released(sent) direct to customer so that if you aint online digging and/or getting the emails you are likely to miss the run of (more and more commonly) limited press (because there are so many small labels , but they too are the ones widely feeding the new vinyl market, too)
Whilst all these other cats were out there chasing that paper hard and putting their integrity on the line, some of us stayed true to recycling the vibration of our fathers who created from next to nothing. The true spiritual frequency that maintains our being like water and air! Salute to these brothers who kept this shit underground and pure.

Some cool algorithms happening for me on here randomly too !!! It's like this phone knows me 😂💌🫶🤯
Godfather Don has to be the most underrated producer in Hip Hop, his flows were nice too! Word to Showbiz!
Real talk

I always used to think that people who made the greatest hip hop beats were connoisseurs of music of all kinds.
Gotta be. Gotta have that ear to hear parts and sounds others wont

THAT DANK OLD SMELL.... HEAVEN.

HELL YES STILL DIGGIN....AND YA DON'T QUIT....DIGGERS ROCK ON.
Man shout out to the record shop cat who looks out for the producers I love that
For anyone that wants to know that sample at 25-26ish min mark…….it’s called “Treat Me, Don’t Trick Me” by The Dells
This is my era.
My dad took me to A1 every Thursday night. I still miss those days, watching him dig and going home to listen to the records. RIP Dad.
this was a golden era for hip hop 94 to 2004
Golden era and Platinum era! Absolutely 💯
i literally said “what is this” and clicked. LOVED EVERY MINUTE vinyl digging is a true art
I remember watching this back in 06/07ish. wow!! memories of my high school days.

Somebody leaked low quality rip. This is the official
One of my favorite Hip-Hop documentaries, bought the digital version a while back. Always go back to it from time to time

The beat Walt is playing at 13:20 uses the sample as Sugar Bear (formerly Ikey C of the Cosmic Force) "ready to penetrate", an '88 Golden Era classic!
