I’ve watched a lot of videos on this pack. After watching this video I made decision to buy this pack. I use it for my hang n hunt setup and put an old school WindWalker stand in meat hauler and sticks on either side in compression straps. Now pack has been discontinued but I actually found it on clearance sale but only had womens sizes. Well I’m only 5’9 200lbs so I took chance and purchased womens xl frame and it works great. I was a mens large barely so the xl womens was same size. Only complaint is material is little noisy but didn’t have the $800 for a kifaru and this is really only other option. Luv it and great video showing this product.
This is exactly what I have been looking for! I’ve struggled to find the right bag but end up cobbling together solutions esp for sticks and platform to carry comfortably for a few miles in and out! Thanks for a great and informative video!
Thank you very much for the in depth and very informative description of the pack. Took my wife on her first elk hunt last year and she borrowed our oldest sons MR pack that worked ok but was way to big for her. Scheels has this pack on sale in a woman's right now and just ordered it after watching your video. Made the decision a no brainer after watching your video, it helped a ton! Thanks!
Good vid Allie... I would say if you are going to pack out meat (you mentioned this was your "hike in" configuration) that putting your sticks in the meat hauler tray is going to cause you some problems and push your load off your back further. I did something similar as well as have refined my kit a bit. Here are some recommendations: 1. Get rid of the long sticks. I had LW's and no matter how I packed them the length always caused packing issues. I moved to the two step Heliums and - wow - no longer! 2. I put all my gear, except for the sticks, in the bag or its pockets - the sticks can then be strapped comfortably on outside the bag and out of the meat hauler section. 3. I also have my gear "ready to climb" - so my dump pouches have everything exactly like I climb it. Therefore all I do is take the sticks off the bag, take the platform out of the bag, take the harness out, put the harness on and start climbing. 4. Ditch dragging that heavy MR pack up a tree... It takes time and too much energy. All my tree gear (range finder, water, food, binos, etc) go up in a small, lightweight scouting bag like the Seek Outside Merlin or Kuiu 500. That bag goes right in my pack just like the rest of my gear. Much quieter, less straps and buckles and size/weight to bring up and hang. I do this with a Kuiu 2300 Pro bag. Might upgrade to a 3000+ bag if I need a to haul some extra clothing in for the cold, but haven't found I need it. It literally takes me 2 minutes from stopping at the tree to climbing up it with everything pre-configured and packed this way. If I have to haul meat then I am not dealing with gear in the meat tray.
I've watched alot of your videos from the beginning and you have become one of my favorite channels. I've always been skeptical about hunting channels just because of some bad apples. You though are not afraid to put real mistakes and lessons that you learn for the public to learn from as well. I always appreciate your honesty on equipment and set ups. You have gave me alot of insight and inspiration over the years as well as some other the other great channels out there. Keep doing what your doing because in my opinion you are going to continue to succeed in every aspect of life. Happy Holidays.
I chose Mystery Ranch as well. I use the Metcalf Pack for day hunts and spike camping. I appreciate it's adjustability , versatility and load carrying ability. Well made and thoughtful pack with the hunter in mind. Thanks for sharing how you use your pack.
If you’re not already, you might consider switching to knee pads instead of the cushion. I’ve used both and the knee pads are 💯 more comfortable. Great video…mystery ranch will def be on my radar for next season
I have the Pop Up 28 and had it for about 2 yrs. Took it on an elk hunt this year (base camp hunting, so I wasn't packing camp with me). I honestly recommend spending a little extra money and getting a bigger pack like the Pop Up 38 or Sawtooth 45. The Pop Up 28 'gets by' for day hunts, but internally it can get a little tight. I'm already wishing that I just spent the extra money and bought the Metcalf first crack. Mystery Ranch has great sales throughout the year (about 25%-30% off), so wait if you can!
Thanks for doing this review! I am not affiliated whatsoever with Mystery Ranch but I can’t praise them enough either. I bought a Mystery Ranch Selway this summer for elk hunting and it quickly became my favorite Whitetail pack for the WI rut too. I have a bad back and a messed up shoulder. With my Eberlstock X2 I was not able to carry over 30 lbs for any distance, but with my MR Selway, a banged up guy like myself, can comfortably carry over 50 lbs. Once the cold snaps hit us in late October and the hunting started to heat up here in WI, my back went out. I dumped the smaller pack I was using for my larger but lightweight mystery ranch after recovery and was glad I did. I hunted public land in WI exclusively and from the ground mostly. At over 3750 cu in, the Selway is big enough for several overnights but sinches down small and tight enough for half day deer hunts. I try to hunt during extreme cold fronts because of the increased deer movement but an uncomfortable seat or pack can easily wreck my back, causing me to cut my trips short and even miss work. Even without tree sticks and a platform or tree stand, I end up carrying a lot; thick bibs, my main jacket, partial gilly, Camo sheet, lunch, drink, gps, hunting chair... I paid 3 hundred dollars for my Selway new from Black Orvis. They were running a sale, plus a new customer discount, veteran discount, free shipping and sales tax included. The packs worth full price! Don’t hesitate to buy Mystery Ranch if your shopping for a new pack
I was looking at the pop up 28 and found your very helpful video. I already use the MR Sawtooth which I love due to how it opens with the side zipper, but I was looking for a smaller bag with the frame. I am also from PA and hunt deer, turkeys, and occasionally go west for elk. I believe the pop up 28 will be a perfect addition to my hunting packs. Thank you for a great informative video !
Very interesting. Saddle hunting is a different way to hunt. I can see a few scenarios especially with back country elk hunting where it would be ideal. But I'm getting old and hunting elk in the back country doesn't seem do-able without a lot of help. For Whitetails and maybe a few local elk, I just switched to ground blinds that I can drag in with my ATV. I hope they will be easier on me. Thanks.
Enjoyed the video. Well thought out backpack. Was watching outdoor America an seen miss Allie...very well done on that. Wish You an Nick an amazing Thanksgiving
Allie, never having gone elk hunting or used climbing sticks like you have, i'm sure there is no room for the elk meat in the pack after you have shot one, so I assume you would have to make a seperate trip (or more) in with out the sticks and gear correct? When empty, would the pack be able to carry an entire elk quarter? Thanks for all your video's! You always brighten up my life with your awesome personality and smile!
Great review. I love that pack! My big game adventures are over for 2020 so it's a good thing quail season just started. Hey Allie, I've seen your turkey and grouse videos... Do you guys ever do any other bird hunting? KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! ✌

Do you find this material to be a lot louder brushing up against stuff walking in and out/ using while setup, compared to the new style treehouse models material? Torn on which one to get because i like this rigid frame pack style and if i had to quarter a deer up way back and pack out. But i like the design and material especially, of the treehouse
Hey Allie. I have the same pack but I’m experiencing tremendous hip pain carrying 3 muddy pro modified sticks, predator platform, and my other gear that I bring to stand. Basically same contents as you. Do you think possibly the pack is not adjusted properly? Thank you! Btw. My partner at work is Al D’Andrea. lol.
