Becky, love the vids. One awesome thing about a Rooster that you forgot to mention that I know you know, but to me is a big deal, is that they protect the flock. All that noise is for a purpose. They yell "Bird of Prey! Everyone, get under something!" "Ladies, get in the house, it's getting dark!", or "Ladies, the neighbors dog is out again!", and then they walk around the perimeter to check things out and make sure they are all safe. Usually the first ones out in the morning and the last ones in at night. Well done, Roo, well done!

For all of the people leaving hateful comments here...I hope you realize that your hate and anger originates from an issue with yourself, and not what this lady is or does. Being hurtful to others is one of the most despicable human characteristics there is. I suppose it can help to make the weak feel stronger, but it's a pathetic way to build an ego.
as far as the grit if they free range they get the grit themselves, but you can save your eggshells and bake them,( I leave them in when preheating my oven) crush them up and throw them back out into the pen for them to scratch and use as grit, the feed store also carries oyster shell for this reason so much cheaper than buying it in a box like that. I throw a cup out into the pen ever so often. I am using my egg shells in my garden and compost. I buy a bag of oyster shell and just throw a cup full or two out with the chicken scratch ever so often. I try to keep a little in the dirt for them when it disapears I throw out more. @@sdwags8536 right Oyster Shells and egg shells are the calcium to make strong shells on new laid eggs. I have one hen who constantly lays with shells so tender they crack open when I pick them up. For grit we bought "baby grit" and then "regular grit" when grown. I still have alot in both bags and have had chickens 3 years. You can serve it separate in a dish, or throw in dirt. The talent of chickens is scratching in dirt while identifying each little dirt speck. Like "piece of sand, piece of poop, piece of dirt from garden, bingo! Piece of grit!" Mine even pick a microscopic piece of dirt up to examine it, and throw it back away. This is why chickens need toys, they are bored out of thier skulls alot.

OMG big mistake this years roosters are getting fattend up and eaten and the females are my layers since I am ten my dad gets the males to eat and sell then I get females

A few things, 1) The thing on the head is not a crown, it's a comb 2) the tail feathers on the rooster are called sickle feathers 3) hens do t need quiet! I have 20 hens, lots of noise and I get about 18 eggs a day 4) if you give your chickens ANY type of mold, they are just like people mold isn't good! They get sick with an illness called sour crop and it usually is fatal! 5) you said things about chick food, chick food does not have calcium!! Calcium causes major problems with chicks liver and kidneys!! And it is not good to only feed your chickens corn, ground or not. It is not sufficient as a main source of nutrients! 6) when you went into the coop, the don't use the nesting boxes because they don't wan the other chickens to see them, they think it is safe! Hens will and do share boxes! 7) the reason your hen ran away when you went up to it in the box isn't because it was stressed, you didn't socialize it enough! My hens let me pet the and they run up to me weather I have food for them or not and they let me pet them 8)
@@v.c.105 don't use a heat lamp in coop because most coop fires are started by them. Just think of a couple of chickens flap at night, a feather is loosed, catches the air and wafts to the heat lamp, catches fires, drops to the floor, all your darling birds are cooked. But you must have heat lamp or source of heat at all times for your little babies, who are not in coop unless their Mom hatched them, in which case she will regulate their temperature. In your baby brooder, the temperature they need first week is 95%, and then reduces each week. You make it so baby can get away from direct heat if needed.
That was a very smart looking rooster and i just love them i have a red rooster in my home 12 years old and he is realy realy big and fearless. The best of the rooster is the tail feather which make them beautifull. I treat him as one of our family. He loves to eat chopped onions , cabbage, homemade bread, raw or cooked rice. Wakes me up in early morning with very loud crowing. Yes roosters are dominating and very smart bird indeed. Thanks for the nice video.

I noticed that her chickens get the small pebbles and such from the dirt or sand they are in. But even so, that size grit she is using is great for baby chicks. As for the other people, Becky, I think you are doing better at your job than most. Some people just need to chill out when commenting to you and LOOK at what you are actually showing on videos. Yes, Chickens NEED LAND! Its not like they would be kept in an apartment building! I may be just starting out on raising chickens, but I come to realize, getting myself slowly out of the rat race and into a more practical place of living is exactly what Becky teaches. this show is very inspirational and it has inspired me to get chickens and i"ve always wanted a farm and im on my way to owning one thanks to you becky
that's crazy, I always say that. lol They're the perfect size to provide a decent sized meal or two, they run only slightly faster than a human, they lay eggs almost every day as long as you feed them, they're pretty and entertaining. And we didn't have to domesticate any of these traits into them. They just came like that. It's like they were made just for us.

Becky I love watching your videos you are so "down to Earth" and non clinical. Meaning you don't know the clinical term/word or name for something and you are not shy about admitting it. You explain very simply what you are trying to get said. I love that so much! I agree with some of the other posters in other videos I have read/watched, you should start your own reality show! You would have a great following whether on youtube or public broadcasting and you might even be able to get someone from Animal Planet to pick you up! Keep posting you ROCK IT, GIRL!!!!
Thank you for the Great tips. One thing I have found to be really handy when raising chicks is a small plastic kids pool,its perfect for keeping them inside,its roomy and smooth and holds the heat really well and when they are older,just throw some orange snow fencing over it and that will help keep the older ones from winging their way over the wall. You can put a couple of small cardboard box's inside and they'll use them for sleep and they feel protected!
I am very interested in raising chickens with free range or pasture system. It will be able to eliminate stress, making us live longer, and of course, chicken is more happy if they raised with more humane way. Eggs and meat produced are certainly more qualified, because it comes from animals that live in happy. that's nice video, thankyou.
Ms. Becky, roosters are one the most proudest species on earth. Just look at the gamecock, they have beautiful shiny plumage and they walk like they own the world. The tiny crown on your chicken is call peacom. The one on the rooster is a ranch comb. There several different kinds of crowns, another name for them is combs.
Becky, I am living a similiar life in PA. I LOVE your videos! I just bought a HOOFJack because of you and I thank you because it helps me very much. I also bought the tools to trim my own hooves. Not confident enough just yet, but you really inspire me, so thank you. I wish that we were neighbors!
Becky Helpp!!! So about a week ago I noticed one of my hens started to have a really messy butt. Like there was just so much poop all over the features and around the vent. So I gave it a bath and wiped down her butt and made her nice and clean (I used NO soap just water) After I gave her a bath I kept a close Eye on her I noticed she was very less active compared to the other hens. I just got her, Maibel, last Fall right before the winter. So when Spring came all my other chickens became more active beside Maibel. She would just mope around or stay in one place. She still ate and drank but she also walked a little funny. She was also pooping very little in little drops and it kept seeming she was trying to push soemthing out. So I did some research and diagnosis Maibel with having an Egg Bound egg. So I started giving her a bath everyday for about 20ish minutes, put vaseline in her vent, gave her some oyster shells, yogurt, her usual pellets and water, also some cantaloupe and Honeydew, I also put her in a cage isolated from the hens and put her in my dark, quiet basement. The thing is i could never see the egg or feel it, but I could feel this large mass between her legs, mostly towards her right leg (maybe why she has been walking pigeon toed), Also where that mass was located the skin was bluish. I also started to massage around her vent, between her legs and belly towards the vent to help pass the "egg". I've been doing this for about a week now and NOTHING HAS HAPPENED!!!! Her walking has been getting worse and she has a hard time walking and jumping. When I brought her outside to get some fresh air the other hens started to peck her. She is pretty old like 5 or 6, and I just recently got her from my family friend, so I don't know how she usual is. But anyways after that I began doing more research and would check on her constantly. I noticed the meat surrounding her knee bone was very low compared to the knee bone itself, making the bone pop out (meaning she's underweight right). The thing is she has been eating this whole time, not so much drinking now, but she has been eating!! But that mass between her legs hasn't gone down. I began giving her some DE yesturday just incase if it's worms or parasites that has been causing this and she did eat it. But now today she can't even get up she's just been scooching around!!! I had to put the food up to her in order for her to eat it since she's been struggling to move around. She keeps getting less active as the days come, SOMEONE HELP!!! AND HELP ME DIAGNOSIS THIS!!!
Hi Becky, loved your clip on the roosters and chickens , my rooster is aggressive we have raised him since a new born we can't get to close or he'll fly up at usI he and all the chickens are free range and we love them so much! They are about9 months old.

Becky: You are a sweetheart! I love the way you love your chickens! Indeed, all your animals! You have taught me so much about chickens, their care, feed, and grit! My Grandmother had chickens! We'd fall over laughing at their antics. When the flock got low, Mama would borrow a rooster and Sal came acrowin and running around like a mad chicken! But he corralled them all by afternoon! But believe it or not they roosted in the trees be side the garden! When I said flock was getting low, I meant by US eating them! Not a hawk or fox or weasel! But the chicken snakes loved the eggs! One year one snake kept getting eggs and Papa got a old doorknob, painted it white and put it in one of the nesting boxes. The next day Mama, looking out the kitchen window, exclaimed, Y'all have to come look! It was the chicken snake with the shape of a doorknob in its middle! 'course I wouldn't kill them today! Just make darn sure the coop and hen house is adequately sealed and secured. It'll keep all the critters out! But I thank you and for sharing with all us city slickers your passion! It's wonderfully refreshing!
Great video. Chickens sure are fun to have at home! I did just want to state, it's really not good for chickens to have moldy food. Also, I would suggest cooked rice rather than uncooked.

@SpringMist1 If you have say One hen and one roo all of your eggs will be fertile as long as he is shall we say Producing if you have more then one hen, One roo can mate with upto 10 hens Now mine for example has taken only 6 to be his Mates so just because they can does not mean that they will.. I hope this helps you out.
I love chickens and the eggs you get from free range chickens are delicious and tend to be rather large I once had a triple yolker from one of the 45 I look aftet, half the time I cannot close the carton due to the size
Becky, I'm an old guy in my late 70's, but I used to play in my Grandfathers chicken yard bare footed. I was about 6 to 7 years old. I couldn't figure out why that big old Leghorn rooster used to jump on the hens, and I would chase him off the hens. One day, I was in the yard, and I wasn't paying attention to the rooster, and that damn old rooster sneaked up on me and spurred me right on the ankle bone. My whole leg went numb and I ran limping out of the chicken yard, and ran to my Grandmother just crying up a storm. I was too young to know what the rooster was doing, but he ambushed me and taught me a lesson. Never turn your back on a rooster. I really miss those days, and I used to love that old chicken yard. In those days we hardly ever wore shoes when we were outside!!! I'm planning to get about three or four hens for my large back yard, probably Buff Orpington's. Because I live in the city, I limited and not have a rooster. I'm going build a small coop, and gather the eggs from my own chickens. I used to raise Amazon parrots when I was young, and built my own aviary, that was indoor & outdoor, and sold them all over the US. I just want about three hens for the eggs and to interact with them. I guess I'm trying to go back to my youth. ( Don't we all???? ). Your rooster jackley looks awesome his spurs look like they are preventing him from running as fast as he possibly can run i looked online and a way i use to trim the galves of the rooster is easy and not painful as cutting them with a gauge and saw all you do is you may know your a pro just in case all you do is take like a pair of wire cutters big ones and scribe at the base of the galve all the way around and give little pressure and the entire galve will easily pull off it will be lil blood
I've been able to pick my Rooster up when it's feeding time. I was going to say reach down and grab it but joke boy is giving me second thought. oh well just reach down and grab him.. :)

Hi Becky, I hope all is well. I finally got my babies. I loss one chicken and 1 duck. now I have 11 chickens and 1 duck. I have found I get better advice from you than I do the store that I purchased my babies from. This is very sad. Thank you for the videos.

Becky I love watching your videos you are so "down to Earth" and non clinical. Meaning you don't know the clinical term/word or name for something and you are not shy about admitting it. You explain very simply what you are trying to get said. I love that so much! I agree with some of the other posters in other videos I have read/watched, you should start your own reality show! You would have a great following whether on youtube or public broadcasting and you might even be able to get someone from Animal Planet to pick you up! Keep posting you ROCK IT, GIRL!!!!
Thank you for the Great tips. One thing I have found to be really handy when raising chicks is a small plastic kids pool,its perfect for keeping them inside,its roomy and smooth and holds the heat really well and when they are older,just throw some orange snow fencing over it and that will help keep the older ones from winging their way over the wall. You can put a couple of small cardboard box's inside and they'll use them for sleep and they feel protected!

I am very interested in raising chickens with free range or pasture system. It will be able to eliminate stress, making us live longer, and of course, chicken is more happy if they raised with more humane way. Eggs and meat produced are certainly more qualified, because it comes from animals that live in happy.

Ms. Becky, roosters are one the most proudest species on earth. Just look at the gamecock, they have beautiful shiny plumage and they walk like they own the world. The tiny crown on your chicken is call peacom. The one on the rooster is a ranch comb. There several different kinds of crowns, another name for them is combs.

Becky Helpp!!! So about a week ago I noticed one of my hens started to have a really messy butt. Like there was just so much poop all over the features and around the vent. So I gave it a bath and wiped down her butt and made her nice and clean (I used NO soap just water) After I gave her a bath I kept a close Eye on her I noticed she was very less active compared to the other hens. I just got her, Maibel, last Fall right before the winter. So when Spring came all my other chickens became more active beside Maibel. She would just mope around or stay in one place. She still ate and drank but she also walked a little funny. She was also pooping very little in little drops and it kept seeming she was trying to push soemthing out. So I did some research and diagnosis Maibel with having an Egg Bound egg. So I started giving her a bath everyday for about 20ish minutes, put vaseline in her vent, gave her some oyster shells, yogurt, her usual pellets and water, also some cantaloupe and Honeydew, I also put her in a cage isolated from the hens and put her in my dark, quiet basement. The thing is i could never see the egg or feel it, but I could feel this large mass between her legs, mostly towards her right leg (maybe why she has been walking pigeon toed), Also where that mass was located the skin was bluish. I also started to massage around her vent, between her legs and belly towards the vent to help pass the "egg". I've been doing this for about a week now and NOTHING HAS HAPPENED!!!! Her walking has been getting worse and she has a hard time walking and jumping. When I brought her outside to get some fresh air the other hens started to peck her. She is pretty old like 5 or 6, and I just recently got her from my family friend, so I don't know how she usual is. But anyways after that I began doing more research and would check on her constantly. I noticed the meat surrounding her knee bone was very low compared to the knee bone itself, making the bone pop out (meaning she's underweight right). The thing is she has been eating this whole time, not so much drinking now, but she has been eating!! But that mass between her legs hasn't gone down. I began giving her some DE yesturday just incase if it's worms or parasites that has been causing this and she did eat it. But now today she can't even get up she's just been scooching around!!! I had to put the food up to her in order for her to eat it since she's been struggling to move around. She keeps getting less active as the days come, SOMEONE HELP!!! AND HELP ME DIAGNOSIS THIS!!!
I will also be bringing her to the vet soon whenever my parents can bring me
Hi Becky, loved your clip on the roosters and chickens , my rooster is aggressive we have raised him since a new born we can't get to close or he'll fly up at usI he and all the chickens are free range and we love them so much! They are about9 months old.

Becky: You are a sweetheart! I love the way you love your chickens! Indeed, all your animals! You have taught me so much about chickens, their care, feed, and grit! My Grandmother had chickens! We'd fall over laughing at their antics. When the flock got low, Mama would borrow a rooster and Sal came acrowin and running around like a mad chicken! But he corralled them all by afternoon! But believe it or not they roosted in the trees be side the garden! When I said flock was getting low, I meant by US eating them! Not a hawk or fox or weasel! But the chicken snakes loved the eggs! One year one snake kept getting eggs and Papa got a old doorknob, painted it white and put it in one of the nesting boxes. The next day Mama, looking out the kitchen window, exclaimed, Y'all have to come look! It was the chicken snake with the shape of a doorknob in its middle! 'course I wouldn't kill them today! Just make darn sure the coop and hen house is adequately sealed and secured. It'll keep all the critters out! But I thank you and for sharing with all us city slickers your passion! It's wonderfully refreshing!

Great video. Chickens sure are fun to have at home! I did just want to state, it's really not good for chickens to have moldy food. Also, I would suggest cooked rice rather than uncooked.
I lived with a rooster for 17 years..he recently passed away. And I miss him so much..i really want another chicken.

The best breed in my opinion is the silkie chickens ... They`re a beautiful breed . and the roosters are quite calm. :)

@SpringMist1 If you have say One hen and one roo all of your eggs will be fertile as long as he is shall we say Producing if you have more then one hen, One roo can mate with upto 10 hens Now mine for example has taken only 6 to be his Mates so just because they can does not mean that they will.. I hope this helps you out.

I love chickens and the eggs you get from free range chickens are delicious and tend to be rather large I once had a triple yolker from one of the 45 I look aftet, half the time I cannot close the carton due to the size
I've often had multiple roosters and they only fight before they've figured out the pecking order and they've never gotten seriously injured from it.
The freaking chicken at the end scared me because when he just pop up and then go oway screaming LOL

Becky, I'm an old guy in my late 70's, but I used to play in my Grandfathers chicken yard bare footed. I was about 6 to 7 years old. I couldn't figure out why that big old Leghorn rooster used to jump on the hens, and I would chase him off the hens. One day, I was in the yard, and I wasn't paying attention to the rooster, and that damn old rooster sneaked up on me and spurred me right on the ankle bone. My whole leg went numb and I ran limping out of the chicken yard, and ran to my Grandmother just crying up a storm. I was too young to know what the rooster was doing, but he ambushed me and taught me a lesson. Never turn your back on a rooster. I really miss those days, and I used to love that old chicken yard. In those days we hardly ever wore shoes when we were outside!!! I'm planning to get about three or four hens for my large back yard, probably Buff Orpington's. Because I live in the city, I limited and not have a rooster. I'm going build a small coop, and gather the eggs from my own chickens. I used to raise Amazon parrots when I was young, and built my own aviary, that was indoor & outdoor, and sold them all over the US. I just want about three hens for the eggs and to interact with them. I guess I'm trying to go back to my youth. ( Don't we all???? ). I totally enjoy your Utube channel and I'm subscribed to your channel. Keep those videos coming!!!!!!!!

Your rooster jackley looks awesome his spurs look like they are preventing him from running as fast as he possibly can run i looked online and a way i use to trim the galves of the rooster is easy and not painful as cutting them with a gauge and saw all you do is you may know your a pro just in case all you do is take like a pair of wire cutters big ones and scribe at the base of the galve all the way around and give little pressure and the entire galve will easily pull off it will be lil blood

My rooster is very protective of his 18 hens. I guess he is protective of us too because NO ONE comes on our little homestead without his approval.
I'm a kid and I just started caring for chickens I have three of them and one is a rooster and the others are ladies and they lay big fat heathy eggs
