Becky... I just want to say thank you! I have spent DAYS (like all day every day) trying to learn about chickens on YT. I considered myself to be well armed with information until I saw your videos. You really know your stuff lady! Thanks for sharing all the little things us noobs really need to know. :)
Wow! Totally admire YOU Becky....Not just about the chickens, but also your enthusiasm and skills. I really appreciate the way you explain everything, step by step; And you built your own cabin???? OMG! from city chica going country!!!
I like to come and visit this channel because Becky lives in the country and has chickens. I can always learn something from anybody. I just watch and listen make considerations and make my decisions from what I observe from everyone. This is a cool channel I like it.
PLEASE do not take this wrong, but your videos make me laugh. I love watching your content cause it's real and you leave those funny little moments. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻👍🏻
You can also paint the inside of the coop with a limewash. We have never had problems in our coops and we freshen it with homemade limewash. It makes the coop look great and keeps the bugs at bay! ~Ranger Hill Honey Farm
That's a great idea about putting a backboard behind the roost so they feel secure. I'd also add some extra steps so they don't have to hop up so high- this will be important as they age.
Luv your nest box totes! When I use 2x4s with chickens I always position the board on its wide side. Up here in N. IL my chickens roost on the flat side of the board and settle down and cover their feet. Keeps their feet nice and warm in winter :) but also its less stress as well! Really enjoy your videos Becky!
Becky, thank you... I have taken your advice on a lot of things! The way you grow your potatoes... Brilliant..... I've done as you've said and mine are growing better than the five gallon bucket idea or the dog food bag idea! So I'm going to try this with my chickens. And people if you don't like her suggestions (yes suggestions) they are not mandates lol. Then move on but don't be negative.
Here in Tipperary,Ireland,we kept Rhode Island Reds. The younger hens were called pullets and ,of course, all were given names! By the way, another way to encourage egg production is to just warn them, unless they up production, they will end up in the oven!!
***** sad to hear that because she is teaching wrong!! Better find someone else especially if you are listening to her about your animals!! TRUST ME, do some research and you will find out what I am saying is true!!
A lot of times they won't lay because they are not happy with there nesting, most likely the younger chickens will sleep on the new perch and of course they always need plenty of food ,thanks Becky I knew most of this stuff but I like the video :) thanks Becky
I love this video! I used to keep chickens. I miss them. I didn't eat them but I did like watching them do their thing! Mine were free to roam and have fun. It was all fine...until...the MASSACRE.
I'm a new subscriber, Becky. I came across your channel when a rooster showed up in my yard and decided he wanted to stay. I grew up with chickens and have always wanted some as an adult but never thought I lived on property that could sustain them. After watching lots of backyard chicken videos, I decided I COULD have chickens on my one acre lot. So I purchased 3 hens for my rooster and am currently building a chicken coop for them and have ordered a large chicken run for them. I'm so excited to be able to have chickens and your videos are very informative and helpful to me as a new chicken owner. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into making your videos to help those like me. I LOVE your channel and your story is so inspiring and admirable.
I can't believe some people are so rude! I love your videos and tell others about them too. I'm learning with you and if this is your remedy with your chickens it's fine with me.
Our chickens just would not lay so we talked to the lady that sold us the chickens and she told us to sprinkle some cayenne pepper on their food. It worked perfect and it is now winter and they are still laying. Just wanted to tell you this interesting tidbit.
you shouldn't make your chickens lay in winter. Its not healthy for them. They need a break just like any other animal.IF you notice a tapering off of eggs avoid forcing them back into production. Also lights in the coop at night can trick them into maintaining summer production.
Thank you Becky. I appreciate your videos. Please keep on, keeping on, your video made some valid points, some comments here were valid too, what some folks fail to realize this is a journey. What you know today is different than what you knew last year or the year before and next year God willing you will know even more. Folks should check the time stamps on videos before lashing out, and no sane person is going to take one single video and use it as their only reference. We are community sharing information and it is possible to do that in a caring way. Thanks again for your info. Stay Blessed
Just the information I needed to solve the problem.. thanks so much for your very informative video, lets hope it solves the egg shortage on our farm here in Australia.

I generally like your videos and I am a subscriber but I just had to mention these three things. Thanks for listening.
My hens STOPPED laying about 2 months ago. Before it really got cold. I didn't know what to do. I watched how Becky fed her hens and tried it. Still nothing for about 2 weeks. Then. LOL Now I am getting 6-8 eggs a day from my 14 different type hens. Thanks Becky!
I have 30 hens all laying well so far away out in Northern Ireland countryside. Great advice Becky love the videos. We have family in Georgia and love the countryside over there to.
Thank you so much! I am new to all this and it has been a great help. We retired to the mountains and on a tight budget, so NEED to get chickens. Next spring tackle the larger garden. Thanks again. JO
I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Adopted two chickens myself who live in my backyard + eglu, and I keep learning things from your video's. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Hey this is a hairstylist, quick tip, you have wavy/curly hair try to never brush your hair when it is dry it just creates frizz. Try to practice wet styling! Oh and I love what you are doing, it’s so inspiring to see a woman who has built her life with her own two hands!
Hi Becky ! I absolutely enjoy your videos. I lv your lifestyle and determination to live it. I have also been living on a farm in an RV for 5 years now. I have chickens an think they are the cutest creatures ever. Thank you for you posts Anita
Becky, I just found your channel and boy am I jealous! If I wasn't a sick lady I think I would do exactly what you are, no, I know I would. Great job on everything!! Love your channel.
Hi Becky....You have been so valuable to my new little flock...yes, very little flock. I only have two hens and a rooster. The hens were going wild laying eggs. I was getting 12 eggs a week just from these two cuties. However, over the past week and a half, Blackie stopped laying eggs and she looks a little slimmer. I'll try some of your suggestions. I'm going to subscribe to your channel.
I have watched your many videos and those are very helpful. I have just started backyard chicken coop about few weeks back. Your videos are helped me in many ways. Thanks alot.
Becky, you have a great personality!!!! I enjoy watching your videos. I'm learning a lot about chickens, bees, and gardening, etc. I love animals and being outdoors!!!
Thanks Becky! My hens will soon have a perch, I'll clean the nesting boxes tomorrow and put in new straw and hopefully the organic laying mash will arrive at the feed store and I can get them back on their regular diet.
You seem to have soo much fun. It makes me appreciate and want to work harder in my large backyard, even though it is in the city. Thanks for your videos
Hi Becky I want to thank you for all the great information you share with all of us, is been helping me so much my young hens are laying eggs out of control I when for one egg to number four today. Thanks happy holiday
Hi Becky, I've learnt a lot from your videos. I just made a video showing my first chickens ever!! I'm so excited about it. Thanks for all your great info.
You are literally the cutest! I found your videos a few weeks ago when I got my first flock of chickens and I had to subscribe because I keep "consulting Becky" when I have questions hahaha :) Love the videos and I absolutely love your spunky personality!
Becky thank you so very much for uploading this video clip. After obtaining a couple of hens who laid every day then suddenly stopped. Yes they molted so we thought it was just that? But they didn't return to egg laying. After watching this video and another one you uploaded regarding their diet. I tried everything you suggested and it has obviously worked. Yesterday and again we have nice big eggs from one hen and looking forward to the other laying again real soon as well. Thank You.
Becky, I appreciate your videos. Our hens went into molt about three months ago (early fall) and have not begun laying again afterward. I'll try your ideas. Thanks.
As long as they are healthy, they will start laying ~mid February as the amount of daylight increases. They will do this whether you follow the "how to get your chickens to lay advice" here or not.
It is amazing to me how all these city to the country people become experts on livestock and the country LOL I would not want to be Becky's chicken's, I grew up on a farm lived on my own farm all my life I found this quite interesting as someone who has made my living from livestock and crops on a family farm
Hi Becky, took your adi n got black astrolorps. So excited cause always wanted. I saw top 10 chicken mistakes from You later doing research. Oops! Got mid of February n just moved them out today and they are so happy. Thanks Becky!
Hey Becky, very cool youtube channel! We have road island reds and domineckers. One trick is turn the lights (red color for less stress) on about 3am (put it on a timer) for a little while. I don't do it to our chickens though as I think they deserve a rest in the winter time and the eggs don't taste as natural without all the bugs in their diet.
I admire and appreciate Becky's life style and hard work but I have to be honest here her advice on chickens is way off. First her young chickens are not laying because they are too young. All you have to do is look at their combs. Still too young. The one she points to and says look how big that one is, well that's a rooster not a hen. They are going to roost during the day not because they are tired but because the older hens are picking on them and it's an escape. Watch the video again you will see one of the older hens chase a younger one. The reasons a hens egg production drops has absolutely nothing to do with dirty nest boxes. The main reasons a hens production will drop is 1. shorter days, 2. an aging hen less. 3. illness. She is correct if they don't have enough to eat egg production will drop. I also have to say this I am confused as to how she has managed to keep chickens as long as she has. That coop just invites every predator in the world to come in and have a chicken dinner. My only though is she has a guard dog.
Ken Dire her advice is way off on a lot of things!! Ever watch the shoeing of horses or treating abscess on horse feet videos she made? OMG she is so gonna get a horse lame or possibly dead one day if people keep listening to her!! She claims the only thing that cause abscess's in a horses hooves is pebbles in the line of the hoof!! TOTAL BULLCRAP! What about nails and tetanus? She says soak in cold Epsom Salt, turn out in pasture and they will heal just fine, no worry! Then she slaps the horse in the face for nudging her arm and licking on it, being a typical horse! I don't know where she is getting her info but she needs to stop giving out advice!
Exactly, Ken. All her videos are misleading and false information and folks just soaking it up like it's gospel. I predict a lot of chickens will die needlessly over these vids.
Joel Green I've commented on all of her "advice" on chickens and she has yet to reply. Which leads me to believe she cannot refute any thing I've said. Here advice couldn't be more wrong, inaccurate and in most cases just plan silly.
Ken Dire I've noticed that also. I'm thinking she is making too much money on this channel fooling the rubes to have any sincerity or honor about the information she is giving out. And that's mostly what I see from hobbyist who are briefly into chickens and don't really intend to grow and learn about the art of flock tending..it's get in, get money off it by teaching other newbies something you read in Storey's Guide to Chickens~another hoot and a holler on misleading and downright silly information~and don't worry about the fall out. Doesn't care if people lose money or birds die from the advice, just as long as the money comes in and other city people believe it all...because city folks trust other city folks and that's where the money is, unfortunately. Can't really market this drivel to country folks...they know it's false and they don't pay for such ignorance.
I found that video helpful and enjoyable! Why are people so nasty?? We're talking about something wholesome, getting back to the earth and respecting your food!
Criticize? Nope. Enlighten? Yes. Ken Dire explained it all very well, so I won't repeat it. I just wanted clarity....not for me, but for those of you who think this is accurate information being given here. It's not...not by a long shot. I don't have anything against Miss Becky but her advice is a recipe for disaster for those who don't know any better...just trying to help others get to the right path. Could save quite a few chicken's lives if one can stick to true information.
My mom had two roosting posts in her chicken coop that we built by hand. Also don't wear any form of glasses on your face, whether it be sunglasses or prescription glasses. My mom went in her coop to check on the chickens one day and had some prescription glasses on her face. She ended up going to the local emergency room and getting some stitches to her nose as one chicken spazzed when it saw a flash of sunlight from my mom's glasses and the chicken flogged her in the face cutting a deep gash to her nose, ouch!!! Another thing I noticed is that the chickens seemed to respond favorably when I played my guitar nearby so I started going into the coop, seating myself near them and playing; the more soothing melodies seemed to have the best effect on them. My mom swore they were laying more eggs from my music playing. I don't know if it had that kind of effect but they would sure gather around me and hunker down falling asleep and napping. I reckon they liked the music. I learned how to pay attention to them and noticing different things about them. The older chickens seem to be the ones in charge the most. They had a lot to do with establishment of order in a coop. Roosters seem to mostly protect the flock and fertilize the eggs and believe me they will guard them with their life if need be. They will attack anything that tries to come into the coop at night for sure
Growing up we had wooden boxes nailed to the wall of the barn. The chickens could fly up on the mand lay the eggs. We also would put a glass egg in some of the boxes so if a chicken snake would get into the box and eat the glass egg ... well he just went by by. The snake could not digest a glass egg. Our chickens ran wild around the farm.
Thank you for your video. Very informative. Could you give some tips on feeding. How much food per hen per day? For 6 mature hens is 1 cup of food enough or should we give more.? What other foods can we give? Lettuce, celery or other green vegetables? Their outdoor area has no green vegetation at the moment. Does the time of year or weather affect egg production? Outdoor area gets muddy when it rains so they stay inside. Thanks for your help!
I added an extra roost and went from 3 to 4-5 eggs per day. Great channel. Thank you!!
hey, how are u doing?

LOL
evone kent and the other hand I don't know
Cayenne definitely worked for me too. I added about a tablespoon to their feed, which holds approx 1 gallon of food.
I missed living in the country side back in Malaysia. City life really worn me out.
Thank you Becky. I appreciate your videos. Please keep on, keeping on, your video made some valid points, some comments here were valid too, what some folks fail to realize this is a journey. I just love your youtube channel. I think hgtv or tlc should've made a show about your adventures from the beginning. It would've been a top show.
this womans a legend becky you earned yourself a new subscriber and that's me
Just the information I needed to solve the problem.. thanks so much for your very informative video, lets hope it solves the egg shortage on our farm here in Australia.
Gee Becky, thanks for the cliff hanger...did the additional perch ans extra food bring back the egg production assembly line?
I built the TOTE boxes that you showed on another video. I noticed that the boxes are more stable and are easier to clean if you flip them upside down. Then, you can just snap off the bottem to clean. Thanks for your videos, Becky. YOU are my pioneer hero and I look foreward to your videos!
If it were me, I'd (first) install the 2x4 flat side up so the chooks can sleep on their feet, keeping them warmer at night. I'd also replace the branch with a 2x4 for the same reason. I would also (second) install a second feeder instead of increasing the work to be done each week. And (third), I would never, ever use diatomaceous earth anywhere around my chooks. If you read the directions on the DE container, you'll see that you are supposed to wear a mask when handling it. That is to protect you from the possibility of getting a respiratory infection. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Don't use it around your chooks either because it will give them a respiratory infection. You can count on it. I generally like your videos and I am a subscriber but I just had to mention these three things. Thanks for listening.
Put in their feed, it makes a great wormer, plus dusted on them, it gets rid of mites.
How about pumpkin seeds for worming chickens?

Ken Dire
I've noticed that also.
Joel Green and Ken Dire I couldn't have said it better than either of you!!
I am a city slicker Grammy...just found your channel. I love it!oxox
I found that video helpful and enjoyable! Why are people so nasty?? We're talking about something wholesome, getting back to the earth and respecting your food!
Enjoying your content and humor. My Becky
Love her videos. Trying her advice on my chickens! Can't wait to see if it works.
OMG, I just love your theme song!
Criticize? Nope. Enlighten?
Joel Green Just wondering what advice you would give!

Margaret Galbraith
What advice do you need?
Joel Green I was asking if what I give my chickens, is good for them? Thanks
Margaret Galbraith well potato skins are bad for chickens because they are part of the nightshade family which will
Hurt your birds.
Thanks for the tips! You have a great looking place there. The cabin is awesome!😀
Like the older videos better than the new ones!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and making these great videos for all of us
Could it possible be the very cold weather we have had in Florida Hens are not accustomed to this cold.
I'm going to get chicken soon and I would love it if you could make more videos on chickens, and by the way great show!! :)
Becky! You’re my hero!
Nice tips by a beautiful lady.
