- On 17th October, 204 victory ace Oberleutnant Anton Hafner led a flight of 8./JG 51 on a patrol over the southwest area of Lithuania. While patrolling, Hafner’s flight was intercepted by Yaks of 3rd Escadrille, 303rd Fighter Aviation Division, part of the famous French Normandie-Niemen regiment. Hafner was seen to hit a tree while chasing a Yak 9 at low level and was killed in the crash. Hafner remains the highest scoring pilot of JG 51 ‘Mölders' for the rest of the Second World War.

Details are scarce on this one, so Ive done my best to recreate this event as best I could.
Historical discrepancy: the fighter that crashes at 5:00 did not happen, this is just what happened when I recorded this mission in IL-2
Why were these French fighting in the Soviet Air Force again? I thought they’d have been like the Poles, ie with the Brits and the Amis?
Since all german pilots were killed, as you show, how do you have info about the batlle? You accept what the soviets claimed?
@@dimatha2434 ive listed my sources in the description
@@StalinLovsMsmZioglowfagz "Initially the Groupe de Chasse 3 (GC 3) (3rd Fighter Group) in the Free French Air Force comprised a group of French fighter pilots sent to aid Soviet forces on the Eastern Front at the suggestion of Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces, who felt it important that French servicemen serve on all fronts in the war.

They were French pilots who transferred to the Soviet Union and formed their own squadron, in the Red Air Force, after the Fall of France.
Do a very dangerous thing, day after day for years on end, without much of a break and under conditions of constant stress and exhaustion, and eventually the odds catch up with you.
RIP Toni Haffner.
That is what happened to Manfred Von Richthohen also. Sleep Deprivation led to complacency and Rookie mistakes.
If u live by the sword long enough, the odds are you too will perish the same way
Glad he went. Nazi.
Another incredible video from you, appreciate the authentic markings as always. The weathering on Hafner's Bf-109 is so realistic.
Maurice Challe was my late wife’s uncle, one of two in Normandy Niemen. Her three uncles all fighter pilots, shot down 29 German aircraft during WW2. Not bad for a family air force!! Maurice was unfortunately lost over Kursk shortly after this incident.
Battle of Kursk was in July 1943. This took place October 1944.
Il aurait été abattu en Prusse Orientale le 25 mars 1945 apparemment.
Hafners loss was unfortunate as well.
@@tomsen413 Like most people killed in a war
Please convey the civilized world's gratitude to him for eliminating Nazis.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I imagine the loss of this ace plus the other three aircraft in the flight was quite a shock for the other pilots in JG 51.
Have been following your channel of late. Truly excellent work to bring the tales of these great fighter pilots to an entire new generation.
Great content! He wouldn’t be able to shake those Yak fighters low level flight!! Met his match! Rest In Peace!
An impossible mission. We must belive the French pilots hence the lack of german sources.
There were two French pilots flying Russian Yaks on his tail and he couldn't evade them both as he was taking hits from them. In the end, Hafner got down low, clipped a tree, and was kaput. 🥲
Are you including the tree in your version of events, Ivan?
Once again, an excellent video. Much appreciated!
Great job with this and all other videos in this series!
Another excellent production....keep em' coming!
I always love your videos! The graphics are always so beautiful and realistic! Thanks!
you have done a great work!
An unremarkable death, Hafner should not have gotten into the weeds with a bunch of Yaks.
Love your content mate! (NZ here! ANZAC's all the way!) Keep these vids flowing bro 😎💯👍
Brave men like Haffner - no matter what side they fought for - deserved to have made it till the war's end, which was just a few months ahead. Wars are so horrible ...I wonder if this world will ever be able to settle disputes without wars.
@Jennifer Kelly sadly we haven’t been able to so far!! But we can pray that we will one day be able to handle disputes without bloodshed!! Thanks
We thought so in the late 60s, we really did! ✌️Unfortunately, the Man won't allow it...
Very good reconstruction of this fight. Congratulations .
Great Video.
Perhaps Anton Hafner should be mentioned a bit more when showing his last enemy flight as a video. Anton Hafner born on June 2, 1918 in Erbach Hessen was one of the best fighter pilots in the Luftwaffe. His training as a fighter pilot took place in July 1939 in the Luftwaffe. After that he was deployed in Fighter Squadron 51 during the war. 1941 in Russia, in November 42 in Africa, and then again in Russia. He has been one of the top fighter pilots with 204 confirmed kills on 795 enemy flights. With a total of more than 100 German fighter pilots who were listed with at least 100 and the highest 352 kills, he still belonged to the average of the German fighter pilot aces.
actually its erbach an der donau
@@grumogus Na dann entschuldige ich mich für die falsche Aussage.

A wonderful adventure with your hard work! I cordially greet you.
This reminded me of the mistake that killed Von Richtoffen.

Great job Soto...!!!
At 204 kills in 795 missions....comparable to Erich Hartmann in terms of "kills per mission". Most Allied fighter pilots with 20 kills in 80 missions are fairly well known. Now multiply that by 10! With 10x the danger and 10x the chance of NOT living through WW2.

Just goes to show that no matter how good you are, you can always have one bad day.
Just awesome. Love these stories.
First time viewer of your channel. I like the style. As for Herr Hafner... not a very good way to go out. But when a pilot is low like that with multiple planes chasing... he's in a pretty tough spot.
Thanks for watching!
Thanx for a great video.
A minor point: photo negative of Hafner is reversed on the title page
of the video; take a close look at his uniform.
...well done video. Hafner s Bf 109 with verical yellow tail band indicates Jagdgeschwader JG 11 ...
Amazing how just a little thing like leaving the properly proprtioned tire tracks adds to the realism....
Brilliant effort. And not before time....
Lovely graphics
I wonder why an ace like that hadn't got the brand new Bf-109G-10 or even the Bf-109G-14, which were both available in October 1944 ! Even the latest model Bf-109K-4 was operational those days. With the Bf-109G-6 he had no chance of disegaging against the Yak-9's . Aces of that skill should have been equipped with the best machines as soon as possible.
One word: time. The new aircraft "entered service" in October 1944, which means it was starting to reach various front-line units at that time. But that doesn't mean that they're suddenly 1,000 of them ready and waiting at the factory for this. So it takes time to plan and allocate which units get how many. Time to transfer the aircraft from the factory to those units. Time for familiarisation (essential for any new equipment, and difficult in a raging war). And by this stage of the war, doing anything was difficult for the Germans. This incident happened the very month the new models started trickling out so it's very likely that the unit - being heavily engaged in combat - hadn't received and/or worked up with their new craft yet. "We'll do it after today's mission", were perhaps some famous last words...
3:23 : great sound editing!
Nice work. Right at the 1:00 mark at takeoff there is a little mix up, the vertical rudder is the old, short style of the earlier versions whereas in the rest of the clip it is the tall version. Did anyone else notice?
I noticed the incorrect writing on the propellor.
Thats very sad! Screw war!!!

There were also Spanish pilots fighting on the Eastern Front--on both sides.
They didn't fight for the Russians
