On 16th February 1945, Oberleutnant Otto Kittel took off on a free hunt over the Džūkste are of Latvia. Upon intercepting a formation of 14 IL-2 Sturmoviks, Kittel was last seen attacking a Sturmovik when two other Sturmoviks simultaneously attacked Kittel from below to the rear. His plane was damaged and crashed shortly after. At the time of his death, was Germany’s 4th highest scoring ace with 267 victories (265 according to some sources).

Hello my family come from Czechia(former territory of Sudeten land). Otto Kittel was stepbrother from my grandpa mum.
RIP to a great warrior.
Incredible that an IL-2 could be so manoeuvrable in order to down a much smaller a/c. Read about Kittel, never knew about the harness being opened?
Great information as usual! 🙏🏻
The IL-2 was first designed as a heavy fighter, then armour was added and it was made into a ground attack aeroplane. It would be heavy, but certainly capable of doing a few combat manouvers before running out of energy.
Looks like Kittel got 'target fixated'. That said, why didn't his wingman & other unit members spot the two IL2s attacking, that's what they're there for? Perhaps combat fatigue & overconfidence in their leader caught them out, or even the bad weather. You don't have to be 'that' manoeuvrable if the aircraft ahead turn in your direction. Sounds like the IL2s had dropped their payload, so were a lot lighter.
Odd about the harness, usually you tighten it when crash landing. Sounds like as plane was on fire, he was going to take the chance of trying to land & get out ASAP before it exploded.
I have a book "The Fighter Pilots" by Edward H, Sims that tells another story; namely that Kittel was shot down by the rear gunner of the Sturmovik before it hit the ground. The book says Kittel followed the Sturmovik as it plummeted, and the rear gunner, knowing he would be dead in a few seconds, simply got Kittel. No iddea if it's true, or if this video got it right.
This video has your best camera work yet. Fantastically shot and cut together, well done!
Superb details and accuracy, well researched and updated with new details from your previous Kittel video 👍
Thank you for another informative video about a German ace that I did not know very well. Keep up the good work!
I follow many of the historical il2 based RUclips channels. Yours is the best I jump at new and old videos alike whenever I see them
I can't wait you make the best videos I especially like guynemer video and the Voss video keep up the good work :)
I wonder if that IL-2 pilot ever got to know who he shot down.
Thanks Soto, awesome as always. =)
Thanks for an interesting video. Well done!
One of your best videos to date; and they are all very good!
who was his victor??
Thanks for sharing this, very interesting movie in an amazing well done way👍
Very nice video!
Was this Otto a reference to Otto in “Secret Weapons Over Normandy”?
Bom soldado, pena que lutava por uma péssima causa. Saudações do Brasil.
A pure killing machine in his FW190.. so sad the great German aces all went the way of attrition. Unlike the allied pilots they flew every day and there was no rotation stateside to save their lives or pass on their incredible flying knowledge & skills.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
With 267 victories, this guy would have been a general in stead of an Oberleutenant in the American air force....
God told me I was a German Fighter Pilot in WW2 so I'm trying to get information on this guy and another Ace. To see which one I was. Because I would be an ace. Because I Ace everything in my life
Too bad they couldn't have gotten him sooner.
Top nazi fighter pilot getting shot down by an IL-2, now that's justice.
Long live USSR!
