    Wow, a review by a guy who does real work on a laptop, not just making videos about editing videos for a RUclips channel 😊 (OK, there’s about five or 10 RUclipsrs out there that really know their Apple stuff and that I subscribe to, but still, very refreshing to see these two MacBook M1 Max reviews by Bob.)

      Every morning I wake up at 4am before my kids and wife so that I can work on my personal project (and myself) before work. I have used macs for years now for development and am so very pleased by the performance of the new M1 machines. I am using it as a laptop again and am no longer tied to a desk. I have one of those cooling pads for my old personal machine and work laptop, now I am thinking I can throw it away.

      @Marcus - Mostly yep, it seems.
      By the way, how much ram does your MBA have ?
      Mine is absolutely base model : 8Gb RAM, 7c GPU... and yet it is easily the fastest Mac I've owned.
      Better : it feels sooooo snappier than any other machine I've used or owned for a very, very long time !
      I bet its super fast SSD is helping a lot, I can't picture how faster a Pro or Max might feel way faster than this... despite their ultra fast SSDs !

    Many commenters seem confused about memory utilization: *It's the job of the OS to maximize memory usage.* So his memory utilization numbers on a 64GB machine is not relevant to what your numbers would be on a 32GB or 16GB machine.

      Yeah, so I love the 13". I am mid-thirties now, my vision is still pretty good and I did great on my 13" because I can use my tools well with keyboard shortcuts. I don't rely on a mouse, therefore I am fast when developing and debugging. Well, I like to think I am :-). That being said, I rely heavily on writing unit tests. I build entire solutions from the ground up on tests. It's so much fun. Being able to easily run two panes of code so that one is the code I am testing and the other is the tests I am writing has just become something I really appreciate. It all came down to workflow. What do you absolutely need to be efficient and effective?

      Anything that is not multithreaded will perform exactly the same as it does on M1. You can juggle more balls with M1 Pro/Max, but they are travelling at the same speed. I didn't end up using my M1 very much because experientially, it just wasn't different from the other modern computers I have. Most of the basic things we do with a computer are single threaded and usually more constrained by disk speed, network speed, and RAM utilization than the CPU. You need some sustained multithreaded computation for these machines to stretch their legs.

    I switched from a Linux threadripper build to the M1 max and my large parallel builds without caching are about the same. However, cached, and single thread are so much faster, it boots in seconds vs ~a minute, it generates negligible heat in comparison, and significantly less power.
    Also emulators are INSANELY fast. This is the best computer I’ve ever owned.
    I’ve used windows and linux in all of my previous computers.macOS feels like the sweet spot of developer usability and ease of use, for the most part.

      @@D3VTec It's a Threadripper 2950x, w/ Nvidia RTX 2080, 4TB of Samsung 970 Pro M.2 Storage, running arch (btw 😉)
      I built the system in 2018 with the goal of heavy virtualization, and parallel building/cross compiling for embedded systems.
      Runs amazing for most of what I need, lots of real-estate to assign, thread-wise. Gives a lot of flexibility on that front, when doing lots of virtualization.
      Cons:
      - Runs Hot
      - Uses a lot of power
      - Single thread performance is lacking
      - Boots slow
      Overall, it's amazing for the bulk of my work, but definitely isn't what I need for general purpose. Working remotely, with this build at home, it superheats the room it's in, throwing the house temps out of whack. My plan is to use the m1 max at home, and set the threadripper pc up at the work office to deploy parallel builds to/ssh into.
      Some important context: Original liquid cooler failed & system overheated, rma'd (second, "updated/fixed/improved") cooler also failed & caused an overheat. Dropped overclocks, and got a good air cooler. TL;DR System now runs hotter than it should, and draws more power than it should (I suspect a voltage regulator somewhere got borked). Performance is ~ the same, minus overclocks being dropped.

      Yes, 32Gb will be fine. I am working with huge projects, hundreds of thousands of lines of code and end to end integration. Local server + app dev. So unless you plan on running servers on heavy VM's and doing App development at the same time, you should be fine with 32Gb.

    any mini-led blooming issues on the built-in XDR, black terminals with white text, or IDEs in dark mode? Still on the fence about 32GB vs 64GB, I run 2-3 simulators and VSCode and docker (also a full stack developer :-) ). Works ok on my m1 air. Awesome video!

    Do you notice any difference in autocomplete speed in Intellij vs the i9 Model?
    I just found out that (on the i9) if you go to
    System Preferences - Battery - Battery - Automatic Graphic Switching
    and turn this of, it works without any lag vs it taking about 500 - 800 ms when this is enabled.

      I have not touched that configuration (but now I want to). Autocomplete on the M1 Max is insane fast. It is one of the first things I noticed when I started coding on it.

      Sure thing. I will start working on that. I use 2x 4k monitors, both are the same Dell Ultrasharp 27". Cal Digit TS3, Thunderbolt 3 dock that does everything over one cable. Supports the full 60Hz of both monitors great. Love being able to plug and play.

    When I open up an android emulator on my 2015 macbook pro at work it lags so bad, but not too bad when I open an ios simulator. Whats your opinion on coding with an imac? I am thinking about switching to imac pro to macbook pro or 2022 imac at home.

    So, emulators are RAM guzzlers. Now, during your typical day, how long can you go before you have to plug in? That is missing in all these M1 vs ... videos. The code/compile cycle, while running unplugged, over a period of say 6-8 hours is another stress test that might be interesting.

      Great question! At hour 24 of ownership I sat down and stared development again. Was on battery, first complete discharge of the new machine. I was compiling, designing in sketch, running servers, a single emulator and running many chrome tabs. I am going to make a video about this to get a good understanding of performance.

    Hey, I am mainly a windows/security dev and so most of my tasks will be done through windows and linux. How does windows 10 on rosetta stack up against other windows laptops when it comes to CPU-intensive tasks like rendering, compiling, multitasking etc? And how well does Arch run on it?

    One problem of MBP is that its limited lid angle. I mean, if one sometimes wants to use it like a desktop, which probably not uncommon, the limited lid angle means that it blocks the monitor, so one cannot use the keyboard+trackpad. There are many Windows laptop whose lid can be opened 180 degrees or more.

    I hope you can help testing one case. That was the only time I remember my macbook pro stuck. I had a virtualbox running linux, have a more than 1gb wireshark file being analysed. I found my 16gb ram was completely taken. Nothing responding. Can you check if you work on a memory consuming task in a virtual machine, will the ultra fast ssd help?

    I have the same workflow, or at least use the same set of softwares you’ve mentioned in the video. With all those iOS simulators, Android emulators, Docker containers running in the background, and Chrome tabs opened, I’m curious to know how much RAM are you consuming? Are you hitting or getting close to the 32GB?
    I think you mentioned you use about 47GB out of 64GB from your previous Intel 16-inch macbook. Are you hitting around the same amount of RAM on your new 64GB M1 Max?
    I’m planning to get one myself, but torn between 32GB and 64GB RAM.

      Really my first time making videos, so its going to be a rough start :-). But yeah, the M1 Max is using the same amounts of RAM as the i9. I am just noticing that it never gets hot with my workload, I am coding on the couch far more now that I ever was before because it actually works as a laptop. If I was on a strict budget, I would go 32Gb. I think I would likely be fine running an IDE or two and an emulator along with Chrome and some other tools. I would likely need to upgrade my hardware sooner though. I really think these new machines have the potential to last many, many years. More than the three year Applecare program. I want to see if this machine will last me 7.

    • @0netom
      @0netom 3 года назад

      If you are tight on budget or just don't want to tie up so much money in one device, then you can go with the 32 GB model and upgrade 6 or 12 months later, when you can still sell it for half the price at least.
      You can think of that difference between your buying and selling price as a cost of renting the machine for 6-12 months.
      Alternatively, you can get a small loan, just so you can afford the extra cost of the bigger screen, the 64 GB RAM and the price of the Max vs Pro, since you can't get 64 GB with the M1 Pro product line.

    • @0netom
      @0netom 3 года назад

      Some ppl keep mentioning that you can also just return the device of you don't like it, without questions asked. That probably only works in the US though, I'm not sure. At least I don't think you can do that in Hong Kong, but I will ask.

    Hey, can you test accelerated Tensorflow performacne on these bad boys? Would love to see how well they perform on mid-sized datasets (5GB+). You know, typical tests like parsing a dataframe, manipulating, filtering, aggregating and filtering it, then perhaps training a regressor/classififer or preferably even Deep Learning model on it.

    I bought a M1 Max MBP 32GB RAM, 32 core CPU and 4TB SSD with a view to doing similar development work in the future. I’m getting a little buyer’s remorse as I wonder how well 32GB RAM will handle multiple VMs, simulators, etc. If anyone’s using a similar spec for this kind of work, please let me know how you’re getting on with it.

    would love to know how much memory is consumed by the emulators
    i really want to get one but i think the "Max" Model doesn't really add performance for a developing point of view besides the 64 gigs ram
    tl:dr => do you think the 32gig "Pro" Modell would perform equally?

    • @D3VTec
      @D3VTec  2 года назад +1

      Yeah after spending quite a bit of time with it I think I would be fine with the performance of the M1 Pro with 32 gigs of RAM. Everything is just so fast I think if I even needed to close a few applications because I was approaching maximum RAM usage I would be fine with that because application is just start so quickly. Emulators take up as much memory as you give them. For instance a simple pixel emulator can easily chew up anywhere between 3 and 5 gigs.
