M1 Max | Why is compiling slow?
Просмотров 13 тыс.2 года назад
There is a reason compiling can be slow on the M1 Max. Today we are going to take a technical dive into why that is the case. We are going to unpack a couple different JVM's and see why non-native JVM's perform worse than native and then compare that to an Intel based macbook pro. It all comes down to the performance of Rosetta 2. Today we quantify the performance hits when using this dynamic b...

The 13 one model looks like s toy and I'm not saying it as a bad thing. But it looks id even carry it to the toilet with me 😂😂. I used to have a old intel model macbook. For a month. I got borrowed it back then. I got used. Wheb i went back to my windows laptop 15.5 inch. It seemed huge. Id like at least 15 inch MacBook pro. But afaik theres none but air model ones. I' will start learning ny path unti software development and wanna become a soft architect in the future. And the thing i like about MacBooks is the battery life. I can always use my old win laptop dor win / linux stuff.

I love your video, I'm a backend Java developer, but sometimes need to tweak large JS scripts (up to 45k lines of code), use docker all the time for different databases to test against, multiple apps opened, browsers with lots of tabs, email, spotify, youtube, multiple IDE instances (intellij), etc. I hate to close things and have pretty much everything opened all the time so I can jump around when I need stuff. Anyway, I am currently on a 2019 intel based mbp 16'' with 16GB ram and I regret that decision so much, my swap usage is constantly 10GB+ and the memory compression seem to kick in very often which pushes the CPU, which heats that thing up arggghhhh. I've upgraded to it from 2013 MBP 15" with 16GB ram and best graphics they had at the time and honestly, I sometimes think that 2013 laptop was better machine than 2019 one. Obviously 2019 is a bit faster, but the fans and the heat - I hate that shit. I never was able to use it on my lap, and the battery is shit. Its 2023 October and I JUST ORDERED Macbook Pro M1 Max with 64GB ram and 4TB storage on a great discount! After all taxes it is just under 3500€ (I'm in EU). Cannot wait to get my hands on it. I waited for 3nm CPUs coming next year - those will be fast as hell, but considering the price and my workflow 64GB ram would cost me close to 5K if not more, so I pulled the trigger once I saw the deal on m1 max. I don't care for the M3 anymore, this beast I ordered should work just fine for 5-7 years, like my beloved 2013 mbp did and that's all that matters. Great video, thx mate!

This is so weird. I bought an apple certified refurbished m1 max 64gb and with a single static open tab while sitting idle battery was draining by itself and was out within just 8 hours. If I did anything heavier than that like say open youtube, spotify, webstorm with 1 project ( which was already indexed) and then just clicked webstorm tabs without any coding at all (btw I profiled the extensions, everything's minimal) - battery died within 6 hours. I don't do heavy VM, android studio non stop compile work. With that load it'd probably die within an hour easily. So I replaced the initial refurbished and got another one from apple, exact same specs, and I have exact same issue. So it's either I am "lucky" for the second time in the row even tho battery is completely new and in normal condition or you are extremely lucky with your m1 max holding days when doing light to medium work and holding 6h with extreme heavy compile loads.

How can apple do this but not provide ecc memory or a way to add ecc memory? I keep hearing how EVERYONE needs ecc for home lab or servers, but then I also see how pro creatives are running everything from video editing to machine learning on Macs headless without any ecc. So I have to ask, having all these minis running as servers are there any stories of a Mac crashing or a loss of data because of a mac not having ecc?

What sort of codes are you writing? Most of the logic these days are already written by somebody and ready for download... unless you're in the Javascript ecosystem where everyone re-create existing libraries just to add extra stuffs, or mainly write another library and put a fancy name on it so newbie and noob developers will think it's cool and start using it (**redux cough**)

Since you went into costs, I would have liked to see a comparison of the cost of doing this in-house / on-prem server farm vs 3rd party, cloud based CI/CD platform like Circle CI. If it's really a business decision, this should be a big factor as buying your own hardware can be very costly, even if you amortize it over time.

It was very portable for sure but that small screen really hurt my eyes when coding which forced me to looked at the screen very closely thus made me not wanting to do any serious coding on it and I would go with my desktop instead.

I am using Intel-based MacBook Pro 15" for 5 years by now. The fan kicks in and burns my laptop heating it at maximum temperature. RAM is 16GB but lacking for my usage. Its memory usage reaches up to 95% slowing down whole system and even SWAP MEMORY is 20GB which is replacing a significant amount of my internal ssd drive. I have not tried M1 Pro MacBook so I am not sure how well-performing unified memory is. My question is: Is Apple Unified Memory 16GB comparable to Intel Based MBP's 32GB RAM? Because I am wavering between AUM 16GB and 32 GB.
