I always saw Krieg as more *willing* to die than *wanting* to die. Theyre analytical in the same way the Iron Warriors are. They can look at a battlefield scenario, calculate the number of men needed and number of men they are likely to lose, and then draft plans accordingly and execute them. So will they always charge trench lines full of machine guns and autocannons? No, not really. Will they charge a trench line full of machine guns and autocannons if it means their grenadier units can slip in to said trenches while the enemy is occupied with the charge and cause absolute havoc? Most certainly. Kriegers know what it means to *spend* lives to the utmost efficacy as soldiers. Every soldier who dies died doing their purpose towards the greater objective 100% of the time kind of deal. Hope that makes sense I am dealing with some MAJOR sleep deprivation right now xD
I read a post somewhere that the only thing worse to Kreig then not being willing to sacrifice your life for big E was to sacrifice your life frivolously
I've been saying the same stuff about them for a long time. I really can't stand the "hurr durr they just want to die for absolutely zero tactical gain". Astounds me that people can discuss something, yet have such a shallow understanding of said thing.
In the krieg book this is very plainly written out for you to see which is nice. One kriegsman seemingly kills himself to save a cadian, not really, his severed torso still surprised and knocked the ork over, where other krieg were instantly on it killing it. They have achieved the benefit of the hivemind without being one. SPOILER: The end of the book made me cry a little, it shows the current colonel in private take out a little keepsake, and breathing notably heavy saying "We do not forget". Every one of them is just someone fully accepting they are born to die and in their death drive forward good.
The death korps of krieg predate the steel legion by like 6 to 9 months. The krieg were introduced in the 3rd ed guard codex, while the armageddon steel legion were introduced in ckdex armageddon
Steve Lyons did a great job depicting the Death Korps in his book Dead Men Walking. I've always seen the Death Korps as fanatic but not as cartoonishly over the top as people joke about in memes. I don't believe that the average Kriegsman WANTS to die, but that they are prepared to if their death contributes to the Imperium's overall victory. Like they wouldn't be looking for the faintest excuse to throw their life away but at the same time, they wouldn't hesitate for a moment to throw themselves onto a grenade if it meant saving the rest of their unit so that they could continue the fight for the Emperor. They embody the fatalistic ideas of 40k only dialed up to 11. They come from an extreme planet, travel across an extreme galaxy and fight extreme threats but they're just regular humans, and they have come to terms with that.
Thats probably the best way of putting it. As he said in the video, people, especially men, tend to romanticize self sacrifice, which is what the kriegsmen are all for. I mean thats kinda the role most men play in society is as a buffer for women and children. I work at a factory so my family doesnt have to. The kriegsmen are just the absolute extreme of that, jumping on grenades so their fellow soldiers dont get hit by shrapnel or getting shot at so others can sneak around and flank the enemy. Theyre all 110% committed to being that guy everyone tells fond stories about when the wars over.
I was annoyed at them until they showed up in Warriors of Ultramar, but expecting 40K fans who screech about Krieg to actually read 40K novels is too much to change the memes
Hot take: Krieg is one of the rare instances where the fan base probably did more damage to the image of the setting than GW, though probably more incidentally than deliberately. Krieg certainly fits snuggly into the overall grim dark aesthetic of 40k, sometimes almost too well. It’s that uncanny valley between parody and pastiche, where something is treated so seriously in the setting it ends up being ironically memed. Probably the reason that Steel Legion is still pretty well regarded without any excessive gags, they have that grim dark element but they have that little extra wiggle room in their persona that gives them that depth that Krieg often lacks beyond their aesthetics. Hell even Catachan, a concept seen as little more than an army of Rambo/Commando/Predator parodies, doesn’t feel nearly as lampooned as Krieg does.
I remember how originally the krieg were not suicidal and reckless, to the point that in one battle they were retreating and nearly shooting a commissar so they could go back, not to escape, but to adopt a better position and drive enemies into killzones
@@Minority119 They never were suicidal is the thing. The whole "Kriegers are suicidal" meme stems from the idea that people cant tell fanaticism and zealotism from being suicidal. From my point, steve Lyons Version of krieg, especially in Dead men walking, is the „correct“ version of their portrayal. They are grim and fatalistic, humans but without true „humanity“, all they have is the war. They’re not grimderp zealots that run into minefields to clear a path for tanks and who die in droves for no reason like lemmings. Back in the 90s I used to listen to G. Gordon Liddy's talk radio program on the regular. One day, he spoke about a buddy of his that was a Korean War vet. His nickname was "E-Tool." He got it because one day of fighting several waves of North Korean and Chinese soldiers, he ran out of ammunition. He ended up having to dispatch many commies that day, to the hereafter, with his short handled shovel. Every time I see Kriegsmen, I think of E-Tool.
In that very same war the soldiers of the only latinamerican country that sent men to fight, kill and maybe die in Korea, Colombia, had to make one or two banzai charges when they ran out of ammo, they did not use shovels or the katana of the samurais that gave origin to the term but their trusty machete, the casualities were horrible as expected but the sight of enemy soldiers being hacked to pieces had particular shock value that's hard to describe among the ranks of the enemy. I reckon Liddy's stories and anecdotes like the one above are the closest thing we can get to start to imagine the horror of being in front of Krieg charge, a wave of dead men trying to make you join the ranks of the unliving no matter what you throw their way.
One thing to note about the kriegsmen. They are master siege fighters, so they will be good at preventing disease, to a certain degree , because diseases spread quickly in a siege, I am sure, this is technically headcannon, they would prevent disease. I don’t know.
One thing I interpreted from their novel, is that the kriegsmen aren't suicidal like memes would suggest. They are efficient soldiers who have an incredibly resolute understanding of their lot in life. I had a large Death Korp of Krieg army (something like 4000 pts back in 2008 edition). Lots of Leman Russ battle tanks, infantry squads in chimeras and even a Stormblade. The stormblade rarely got used because of its overpowered plasma cannon which made battles less fun. I sold the army when I got bored with 40k in college and realized I was wasting thousands upon thousands on forge world resin stuff and needed to pay my bills and not get into debt. I still think they are a cool army and really liked painting and building the models.

Hello, Herr Bones. I'd like to thank you for playing this excellent music with the video. It's remarkable how well this suits the regiment and how deep it stirred.
"Ok, all of you, wear your gasmasks 24/7!" Everybody puts their mask on. "Ok something feels still off. Oh yeah, everybody put your horses gasmasks too!"
For me, the part i love about the Death Korps is the motivation behind their devotion to fighting: they have a deep and unending guilt gnawing away at the very core of their entire population. When the planet turned away from the Imperium and turned to 'civil' planetary war, the Imperial Cult was already in full swing, so when then loyalist FINALLY regained control, they knew they still had ancestral ties to the people who had turned their back and betrayed the Emperor and his domain. They believe themselves to be the lowest of the lowly humans due to the actions of their forefathers, and due to this see the idea of their lives being thrown away by any means needed, in place of what they consider to be truly good and loyal citizens and people, to be the most worthwhile thing that could ever come from their wretched lives, and maybe, just maybe, if the Emperor witnesses their sacrifice, that he may come to forgive them for their ancestors sins, and allow them a place by his side.
That for me makes them so noble, they'll give their life without a thought so maybe other guardsmen units can live to fight another day. I used one of those moments in a personal fanfic I wrote about Kriegsmen and Cadians fighting together.
The Korps got me into 40k. Being a history buff and military buff i was scrolling through youtube one day and saw these badass dudes with a clearly WW1 aesthetic and strange looking rifles went down the rabbit hole and somehow found there name and went further down the rabbit hole finding out about the universe at large. I enjoy all that is 40k now because of the Korps and there still my favorite guard unit.
I always liked them, because 1 they look cool, 2 grim determination, stoicism, and pragmatism in the face of unknown horrors of the universe, and that is something to be admired.
I think it is maybe the concept I have been pondering on what actually is virtue for men and the only thing I can really come up to is "expendability at risk" bravery events are always a soldier willing to risk themselves to lower risk for their colleges. Even the whole suffering long hours to take care of your family is signaling that I am willing to risk myself for who and what I value. Almost any kind of "excess" or negative character trait is always described in how in terms it inhibits our usefulness.
I like them not just because of their aesthetic, but because of how different they are from other guard regiments. To me, it's not that they want to die- but that they want to fight. They want to win no matter the cost. It's not death, it's sacrifice. Death is only meaningful if it means that it will ensure victory, so pointless losses are just that- pointless. Like you said, they're pragmatists. They're mortal men who are incorruptible in the face of chaos. That alone feels like a showcase of humanity's resilience. Even genetically perfect, tank-armored badass superhumans can be corrupted by chaos, but Krieg, normal humans, hold the line because loyalty, dedication, and duty are everything to them. It's one, small bright spot of hope in an otherwise terrible universe, that humanity might not be perfect, powerful, or infallible, but Chaos is not an all consuming blight. Humanity can stand against the coming storm without fancy technology, as long as they believe in their cause. Also, a side note, the mass-production thing is dubiously canon. It's speculated about, but it's in that gray area of canon because one book says "No they don't" where as one book says "yes they do" and then another book goes full throttle and says "actually they don't use artificial insemination, they just fuck *a lot*." That part of the lore I've always taken with a grain of salt because the way it's written and portrayed is "no one knows, no one will ever know."
Currently reading Dead Men Walking, that book really nails the idea that the Death Korps are to civilians what certain Astartes chapters (Grey Knights, Flesh Tearers, Marines Malevolent) are to guardsmen or what the Legion of the Damned is to everyone else, certainty of demise, no hope for succour and with a quick end as the best possible outcome.
In the book krieg And this is soilers so be warned In the book a small kill team of kriegsmen were sent to uncover a vault of hidden weapons where if they were to fall into the orks hands would spell disaster for the entire imperium and the world involved and so what happens is that they find the vault in which all of them elect to stay behind and guard the vault, however it is the oldest and senior of the kriegsmen who basically tells them that he has lived the longest and as served the longest at which point the other three kriegsmen all agree but choose to give him their rations as well as a few grenades allowing the one staying behind to stay a live a little bit longer, and so unfortunately later in the book it turns out that the orks had found the vault, in which the kriegsman blew the place up and as it turns out, the hidden weapons were nukes, resulting in the destruction of the entire hive and everyone and everything living inside and outside of it, only for the rest of the krieg army to be left relatively unscathed whist the withdrawing cadians suffered from burns and smog from the nuclear fallout, whilst the krieg were basically walking through the nuclear fallout as if they were on holiday, but again, compare that situation where you know someone has to be left behind such as say a cadian squad where they might fight amongst themselves as to who stays, vs the krieg where I’m the oldest and longest serving and I’m staying THATS IT
After the civil war between the Loyalists and Heretics on Krieg, the Loyalists of Krieg destroyed their planet in a holocaust to wipe out the Heretics. But this civil war brought them great shame. The remaining Kriegers are desperate to prove their loyalty to The Emperor. They are willing to lay their lives on the line to prove their loyalty, their usefulness, and their love for The Emperor in the hopes that they will not be cast aside in shame. And I mean they're just so cool looking. They sit perfectly between an NCR Ranger and a TF2 Pyro. And Kriegers do get Flamers.
I've been watching Janovich's Siege of Vraks series and I find it hilarious that Vraks is a desolate ugly little planet with absolutely no natural resources or strategic value. But the Death Korps are lucky. They fought for their Emperor. Many of them died for their Emperor. A few of them were forced through a fine mesh screen for their Emperor. They were the luckiest of all.
A huge reason why they’re popular nowadays is the nihilistic, joking-depression humor our generation has embraced. Remember the Area 51 meme, and all the people saying they would go just so they could get shot? Or during the GameStop stock short, when people were talking about how they think it would be awesome to cause the next Great Depression, since they already didn’t have a future?
I like their devotion, their fearlessness, their competence. I hate the memes that make them out to be idiots. This is the guard regiment that can hold the line or breakthrough against enemies that would usually necessitate the deployment of elite forces like astartes.
Unpopular Opinion: I think Krieg is just kinda alright. Personally I prefer the Catachans, Valhallans, Tallarn, and Elysians ahead of them (Give me 12" move jump jet Elysians, GW, it would be amazing)
Agreed they won’t break, buckle Or yield, you give them a mission and they will pursue it either until there’s no one left standing or alive, or until it’s no longer considered viable to continue, again compare that to any other guard regiment and put them in that exact same situation or hell any other human or organic faction and place them in that exact same situation and 9/10 times they’ll either get absolutely obligated or would simply have enough and either rebel or simply up and leave, again take the siege of vraks as an example, a sieve that lasted almost ten years on constant siege warfare against a well defended enemy with a literal city sized stockpile sitting right beneath their feet, imagine something the size of New York City mix that with a German WW2 bunker with the size and functionality of an ikea and you get the gist, that cities entire existence was to simply sit on top of a massive warehouse and twiddle their thumbs whilst doing so, all the while protected by anti orbital defenses, mile high and thick defenses, interlocking bunkers with an underground network, whilst supported by hundreds of individual mortar and artillery redoubt, whilst further protected by anti aircraft hydra emplacements as well as anti aircraft missile batteries, all the while being bolstered by multiple planets worths of fanatical soldiers as well as traitor space marines including abut not limited to Nurgle Khorn Zneech Where certain areas would be more dangerous than the planet of katachan due to the sheer amount of plagues, vile creatures where even the death korps refused to go, simply because their armor and equipment couldn’t handle it, all the while the defenders are being supported by chaos knights and traitor titans all the while the defenders have all the fuel, ammunition and supplies they could ever want or even need, again, this is an armory world meant to house anything and everything for several dozen entire regiments if needed such as if the neighboring systems were being invaded then any and all imperial forces would be able to readily get their supplies and equipment from vraks rather than to ship them from several systems further away than they need to, or if a crusading fleet needs to rearm and resupply in order to mount an effective defense then vraks would act as a staging post as well as a spearhead for any offensive or even defensive actions. So again take any other faction and put them into that exact same situation such as say the federation or the clones from Star Wars or the borg, again 9/10 times the enemy would simply get tired due to a lack of available resources or power or simply broke and fled
Quick question about the book, im very new to Warhammer 40k, do i have to read the other 6 parts before starting this one or are they all just mini stories?
The Death Corps of Kreig are German WW1 troops but cooler that’s why people like them no they are not Nazi’s they are just based on German soldiers Everyone thinks that being a German soldier and being a Nazi is the same thing technically no it’s not
What is the art playing at 12:45 until the end? Looks like the krieg’s enemy is wearing a gas mask like theirs. Never heard of a chaos corrupted krieger so is this just a coincidental traitor guardsman?
if you what two death kor book to read. "krieg" by steve lyons it goes thought the civil war and the forming of the death kor. "dead men walking" it the death kor vs necrons over witch faction is more undead
you are kinda wrong that they wont retreat, kreigsmen have KILLED COMMISSARS on vraks not because of cowardice but because of HOW POINTLESS their deaths would be. thats the nightmare for a kreigsman which is FAILING to die with a PURPOUSE or knowing it wont change anything
Considering that this group is associated with a WW1-style stalemate of war, with an aesthetic resemblance of the German Army, it could be said that the Krieg are popular because they represent the pointlessness of that real war, their own war, and war in general; they created all this misery in their society, and have only themselves to blame for it. It's similar to how the German Empire ultimately instigated the start of the First World War, because it wanted an excuse to expand its empire. They are the misery of war, incarnate, in my eyes.
They have a pan WW1 look. The longcoat & trousers bears a striking resemblance to French WW1 uniforms. The helmet top shares a profile with the French Adrian helmet while the bottom part is clearly inspired by the German Stalhelm. The iconic gas mask is extremely similar to the British SBR Gas Mask used during the war. The bayonet is modeled after the American M1917 Bayonet. The Lasgun Model 98 is named after the German Gewehr 98. The breastplate worn by Krieg Officers and Death Riders is inspired by the French Cuirassier breastplate.
Outside of RUclips videos etc, I have 0 knowledge of 40k. I like the Krieg because they are humans (more or less..), not some overpowered things beyond humanity like space marines.
I always saw Krieg as more *willing* to die than *wanting* to die.

I literally just clicked on this video upon recommendation and immediately heard the music. I'm already hurt.
Will continue video.
Because everyone can appreciate a good shoveling
Yay! The "I'm Arther." part of the intro is no longer so sexually charged!!
I know I’m in the minority, but I prefer Elysian drop troops as my guard army, their aesthetics are top-notch.
my favorite guardsmen regiment right now is the indigan praefects
A helldiver would fit in well with a krieg squad
Currently reading Dead Men Walking, that book really nails the idea that the Death Korps are to civilians what certain Astartes chapters (Grey Knights, Flesh Tearers, Marines Malevolent) are to guardsmen or what the Legion of the Damned is to everyone else, certainty of demise, no hope for succour and with a quick end as the best possible outcome.
In the book krieg
And this is soilers so be warned
In the book a small kill team of kriegsmen were sent to uncover a vault of hidden weapons where if they were to fall into the orks hands would spell disaster for the entire imperium and the world involved and so what happens is that they find the vault in which all of them elect to stay behind and guard the vault, however it is the oldest and senior of the kriegsmen who basically tells them that he has lived the longest and as served the longest at which point the other three kriegsmen all agree but choose to give him their rations as well as a few grenades allowing the one staying behind to stay a live a little bit longer, and so unfortunately later in the book it turns out that the orks had found the vault, in which the kriegsman blew the place up and as it turns out, the hidden weapons were nukes, resulting in the destruction of the entire hive and everyone and everything living inside and outside of it, only for the rest of the krieg army to be left relatively unscathed whist the withdrawing cadians suffered from burns and smog from the nuclear fallout, whilst the krieg were basically walking through the nuclear fallout as if they were on holiday, but again, compare that situation where you know someone has to be left behind such as say a cadian squad where they might fight amongst themselves as to who stays, vs the krieg where
I’m the oldest and longest serving and I’m staying
THATS IT
After the civil war between the Loyalists and Heretics on Krieg, the Loyalists of Krieg destroyed their planet in a holocaust to wipe out the Heretics.
Well, congratulations, this video was at least 70% accurate, I guess.
You are loved by Arthurs, apparently.
i'm currently making a deep dive into the history of krieg and where they came from, they have some really interesting early stuff!
I always forget you're Canadian until you say a word with "ar" in it
I enjoy the fireskunks a disproportionate amount to their appearances
eyo another Steel Legionarie, I painted my Vet Guard as Steel Legion
They encompass tragedy and heroism.
I like their devotion, their fearlessness, their competence. I hate the memes that make them out to be idiots.
This is the guard regiment that can hold the line or breakthrough against enemies that would usually necessitate the deployment of elite forces like astartes.
More Guard content let's goooooooo
Kriegers have gas masks. So therefore, I like them.
Unpopular Opinion: I think Krieg is just kinda alright. Personally I prefer the Catachans, Valhallans, Tallarn, and Elysians ahead of them (Give me 12" move jump jet Elysians, GW, it would be amazing)
Kinda the same. The never ending memes of Krieg’s fan base certainly hasn’t helped in endearing them to me.
@nate742 Same. The e-tool memes still make me chuckle a little, but that's because of unrelated barracks memories.
Watch out MajorKill, this'n's got banter
Shout out to my favourite legion the Talarn love my sneaky desert bois
Status, they are popular because many of us have spent thousands on our armies over the years. Few armies as expensive as an all forge-world army.
Its a shame that they don't expand on all the other guards. So many cool groups
Agreed they won’t break, buckle Or yield, you give them a mission and they will pursue it either until there’s no one left standing or alive, or until it’s no longer considered viable to continue, again compare that to any other guard regiment and put them in that exact same situation or hell any other human or organic faction and place them in that exact same situation and 9/10 times they’ll either get absolutely obligated or would simply have enough and either rebel or simply up and leave, again take the siege of vraks as an example, a sieve that lasted almost ten years on constant siege warfare against a well defended enemy with a literal city sized stockpile sitting right beneath their feet, imagine something the size of New York City mix that with a German WW2 bunker with the size and functionality of an ikea and you get the gist, that cities entire existence was to simply sit on top of a massive warehouse and twiddle their thumbs whilst doing so, all the while protected by anti orbital defenses, mile high and thick defenses, interlocking bunkers with an underground network, whilst supported by hundreds of individual mortar and artillery redoubt, whilst further protected by anti aircraft hydra emplacements as well as anti aircraft missile batteries, all the while being bolstered by multiple planets worths of fanatical soldiers as well as traitor space marines including abut not limited to
Nurgle
Khorn
Zneech
Where certain areas would be more dangerous than the planet of katachan due to the sheer amount of plagues, vile creatures where even the death korps refused to go, simply because their armor and equipment couldn’t handle it, all the while the defenders are being supported by chaos knights and traitor titans all the while the defenders have all the fuel, ammunition and supplies they could ever want or even need, again, this is an armory world meant to house anything and everything for several dozen entire regiments if needed such as if the neighboring systems were being invaded then any and all imperial forces would be able to readily get their supplies and equipment from vraks rather than to ship them from several systems further away than they need to, or if a crusading fleet needs to rearm and resupply in order to mount an effective defense then vraks would act as a staging post as well as a spearhead for any offensive or even defensive actions. So again take any other faction and put them into that exact same situation such as say the federation or the clones from Star Wars or the borg, again 9/10 times the enemy would simply get tired due to a lack of available resources or power or simply broke and fled
Actually, the aesthetics, though similar, come from different eras. While jin roh is very much ww2 Germany, kreig is ww1 Germany and France.
A fellow steel legion enjoyer. Knew you were a man of culture
They're the over eager little brothers of the Grimdark!
Quick question about the book, im very new to Warhammer 40k, do i have to read the other 6 parts before starting this one or are they all just mini stories?
the music sounds familiar. Can't quite remember what its called...
the real reason they are loved is funny shovel man go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
They are also mandated to send troops to the imperium. Its not like a choice, or cultural preference, its that or be destroyed.
Okay everybody. Now go read Dead Men Walking.
House Hawkshroud when??
Um... Because we're awesome?
if you what two death kor book to read.
Welp…took an L by having most of those stormcast models in my collection
I knew about the krieg before ultramarines or anything Warhammer for that matter.
I like them because I don't have to paint faces
Jin ro and Krieg don't pull from the same source. Kriegsmen are ww1 Prussians while Jin ro directly pulls from the ww2 Wehrmacht
Umm ackshually... another great video, well done!
Isn’t the Steel Legion a pdf and not part of the guard
Krieg: tf2 pyros crossed with ww1 germans
The Chadachins!
Gasmask man cool. There we go I saved you 15 minutes.
Outside of RUclips videos etc, I have 0 knowledge of 40k.
I like the Krieg because they are humans (more or less..), not some overpowered things beyond humanity like space marines.
Seriously, why pronounce it KATikAN and not CATAshen? Is there some inside joke I don't know?
Great work as always.
Lore wise it is the correct pronunciation. I still call them Cat uh chan, though because F the rules.
Day 2 of asking Arthur to talk about omori because I keep hearing it(I love omori)
I just like gasmasks
I NEED a Krieger GF bro you just don't understand
CAT-UH-CHAN. That is the only way to say it...
Just saying. If they release a kit. They'd make bank.
I'm steel legion fanboy myself
Can anyone recommend some Kriegs books?
Btw Krieg=war in german. Always iritates me hearing the warman of War 😅
Krieger=Warrior
