You forget sometimes just what a wonderful voice Lanza had, then you just have to hear a few notes and then you remember, it is one of the greatest Tenor voice of all time.
They were magic together! Love this video clip from his first movie, That Midnight Kiss. Mario Lanza so handsome with a golden voice. No wonder he was so admired.
Modern audiences seem to think operatic tenor stars look like Pavarotti - bloated and fat. They think that Lanza was some kind of exception and that's why he was such a Hollywood sensation. Wrong! He was a sensation because of his fabulous voice. This little song is as good a piece of vocalism as anyone has ever managed at any time. But there are several star tenors who were better looking. Franco Corelli comes immediately to mind. Taller and he had better features. Corelli was famous for his matinee idol looks. Corelli was chosen the best tenor of all time about twenty years ago in a famous poll of opera fans. Bjorling was second, Caruso third. (BTW neither of these two guys was very good looking but real good singers). Here's where I get in trouble. I loved Corelli. I heard him live on stage in full operas and I heard in concert too. A huge and trilling voice. I've heard almost every tenor of the past half century live. I forget most of them. I remember Corelli. But maybe Lanza had even better pipes. Other tenors have been movie stars. In modern technicolor movies - Franco Bonisolli (who sounds a lot like Lanza) and Alfredo Kraus (who sounds very different). And of course there is Oreste Kirkup who was supposed to be the new Mario Lanza in " The Vagabond King". He was tall and movie star handsome. Alas his voice was quite pedestrian (that means pretty bad). Jose Carreras - when young before he got sick wasn't handsome - he was pretty, even beautiful. He was too good looking to seem entirely masculine. Great singer however. The single most beautiful tenor voice I ever heard live in the theater (SF Opera - Whether). I would not laugh if someone said Lanza sang better. I'm not certain I would agree, but it's not an unreasonable opinion. The movies are filled with good looking guys, not great tenors.
his very first movie and in this scene he looks like a well established movie star already. young and healthy before his addictions. her voice too was God given. they did a concert together in L.A. 1947 HEARD THE RECORDING OF THE RADIO BROADCAST.
Apart from all the adulation justly deserved for Mario, the greatest tenor ever- of course, may I say that Kathryn Grayson has never looked lovelier...
Dave Osland There can be a huge difference between "greatest" and famous. Just because Lanza was popularised in films doesn't make him greatest any more than McDonalds hamburgers are "greatest" by virtue of their ubiquity
larry pinter The distinction you draw is rather arbitrary. Caruso was both the greatest and famous. And it would be an odd thing to propose Lanza is famous now. I think you are just being a contrarian, let us not ignore the obvious auditory evidence, he was trained by the same teacher as Gigli after all.
Dave Osland Absolutely. Best voice ever. Said by the greatest tenors, including Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti. They know better than us, I'm afraid. Perhaps there are singers with better technique, but better voice? No.
Quanno 'a notte se ne scenne P'abbruciá chist'uocchie stanche Quann'io veglio e tu mme manche... Sento 'a smánia 'e te vasá! E te chiammo e schiara juorno Ma è pe' ll'ate stu chiarore... Tengo 'a notte dinto core E nun pòzzo arrepusá... Ah, nun mme fá murí!... Tu che ne vuó' da me? Mamma mia mme vène a dí pecché Chesta smánia nun mme vò' lassá Ah, nun mme fá murí!...
the svelte mario! i love that final high note as he goes out the door!
Magnificent > my late dad used to play his 78 records way back in the early 50's > I was about 6years old I'm now 77 and still enjoy his voice 😊
I'm 78 and had the same wonderful memories with my father.
Dad was a great singer and beleive he's in heaven singing with Mario
The voice that will always send shivers down my spine. I've heard all the great tenors and Mario was simply the greatest of them all!
Bellissimo questo video...lo guardo spesso.
He left us too soon .. So glad we have his films and recordings to enjoy and marvel at ... Thank you Vincent
He couldn't handle the fame; it wasn't the alcohol that killed him.
Without doubt the best version of this beautiful song , sung magnificently by Mario Lanza , for me this version will never be surpassed.

As I have said before, there is NO ONE (in my opinion) who can match the talent of the GREAT Mario Lanza, may His soul be with Our Lord in Heaven.
Gigi...How can anyone help but agree with you. Every generation must have it's music but this is eternal.
...sure, Mario is one, after Enrico Caruso
Yes indeed.
That last bit was hilarious. What a voice good Lord!!!
You forget sometimes just what a wonderful voice Lanza had, then you just have to hear a few notes and then you remember, it is one of the greatest Tenor voice of all time.

Dave Osland No...The greatest tenor in recorded history, was Enrico Caruso.
But if you mean in his own lifetime, i agree.
+Pedro Urquijo Rodrigo ! Excellency comment, the purest truth, not the best technique, but that voice ...! God that voice!
Todo un gran caballero mario

What movie is this from?
What movie is this?
That Midnight Kiss (1949).
3:19 🤣
No tenor, past or present, can match the voice of Mario Lanza. I remember when he was popular. It seems like only yesterday.
lol
It sure as hell can't be The Great Caruso, I can tell by the clothing and the fast-talking Mid-Atlantic Italian accent and attitude I guess.
Somewhere my love instrumental
Then let's go to the instruments.

Look how thin he is compared to later.
the greatest tenor ever...the most handsome man with very sexy body...good big heart and soul...no surprise women were jumping all over him...
wow women don't dress like that anymore....
