- Infinity Train Book 4 may have been different to what we expected, but it was still a fantastic season. I really hope we get Book 5 one day, Owen Dennis deserves it and so do we! Well, some of us. Here's hoping for a revival from Adult Swim.
Review is my thoughts on the season, but I also go into why Book 4 being different isn't a bad thing, and why it should be judged on it's own merits. Also if you think Ryan Agaki and Min-Gi Park's queerbaited us ya stupid.

I completely agree with you about the queerbaiting thing. I think confirming a romantic aspect would've overshadowed their other character motivations and communication issues. That being said, I do ship them. I think Min-Gi was repressing a crush on Ryan at the beginning and it's part of why he didn't do music with him. Fits in with the whole wanting to make his parents happy, wanting to do what he's 'supposed to', being set in the 80's situation. But I don't think there was a potential for romance for the bulk of the season until the very end because they had to rebuild their friendship first.

Both are good options. I think Adult swim would be better because of the story they want to tell but I think more ppl have Netflix so if it was in Netflix then more ppl would be able to watch it. Another possibility option could be that HBOmax buys it from Cartoon Network. I’m hoping for one of these outcomes
I would give my firstborn son to have Adult Swim pick up Infinity Train. They're very capable of telling some great stories without relying on vulgarity or crude humor, and I would love if they took over for Infinity Train and kept it basically at the same age rating, maybe just a little higher. Allow the older characters to very mildly swear, ("What the hell!") but definitely not allow them to drop any F-bombs or say "Shit," or that level of vulgarity. I feel like Infinity Train is a very important cartoon, teaching children, teens, and even adults some very valuable lessons through its unique world and amazing storytelling. If Adult Swim took over for Infinity Train, I'd want them to keep it around its current age rating so kids can continue to enjoy it and learn from it.

@@ChristopherCapersJones Like I said, I'd personally prefer they don't lean into the swearing too heavily. A lot of Infinity Train's lessons are quite important for children to learn, and I'd hate for children to not be able to view this amazing cartoon because Adult Swim wanted to unnecessarily swear.
Honestly, in a way it kind of makes sense they weren't a couple on screen? At least, story-wise, neither of them were ready for a romantic relationship yet, and they still needed to sort stuff out in their platonic relationship first. Hope that makes sense, I don't have good English lol

Makes absolute sense, and I think the same thing! It wouldn't feel realistic if they became boyfriends at the end because, well, they just started to heal. They were in the train for just some weeks too so it wouldn't make sense in-universe either

To be honest, eventho it’s not darker than before but they really up the level in book 4. Every pocket dimension of the train is a real threat to the main character, from the 3 shape shifter to the cow boy bugs to the baby pig to the spaceman crusher to the shadow hand creature to the living castle... every single episode has a real threats!! Unlike all 3 previous books, there are always some pocket dimension that is quite chill in the infinity train from book 1-3. But book 4 top the level by making every episode a threat!
Yeah I thought it was quite exciting to have so many villains this time around LOL
I think it has to do with the fact that Book 4 takes place before and while Amelia overtakes the train, so no changes would have been brought to make the train safer and more appealing.

I always found it funny how there were little to no actual threats from denizens in Book 3 since I found that ironic for how the characters in that book thought about the train
This season definitely felt like it was going back to basics. It uses the wacky train environment as a a vehicle for the story to exist leading to the completion of complex character arch's. The problems aren't really with the book itself but rather the unfortunate predicament it has been placed in as a final season. Which it most assuredly is not. It is definitely meant to be a bit of a breather like you said.
On the topic of baiting I definitely don't think the show had written the two characters to be in a romantic relationship. Rather they're just two friends who have to work out their issues, a romantic angle would only muddy that message in my opinion. Which is to say a bit ironic as I definitely wanted the two to become a couple when the first trailer initially dropped, I hoped they'd break barriers but those were my misplaced expectations and it isn't fair to judge the show based on those assumptions. It's like you said, interpretations can be made by the audience on what their relationship is which isnt new to the series. From Grace and Simon to Lake and Jessie, they all could be believed to have had romantic connotations but that's for us to decide. Different interpretations to media should definitely be celebrated rather than berated by fans.

yeah i fully agree, i think this season would've been way better received by folks if it had placed just after book 1 where the shift in tone wouldn't have been anywhere near as dramatic. i don't wish it had, cuz this would've been a good place to put book 4 in the grand scheme of the show, but there wouldn't be so much confusion about it hahaha
i agree though, there wasn't really any room to explore a romance. to make this a love story on top of everything else, and have it be compelling and not just shoehorned in, they would've had to detract from the main point of the book. their experiences/issues are universal to any close friendship, and making it romantic doesn't add anything to that. And yeah given his history so far, I think that Owen will always leave relationships ambiguous when he can!

I honestly hope we end up getting a sort of comic series of the passengers we already seen and there life after the train and how it affected them. Like at the end of season 1 tulip was seen to no longer have a reflection which someone would of noticed atleast. And if we do get something like this maybe we could get an after confirmation on ryan and min-gi's reletionship without worrying about censorship

This was a great book and I think it's purpose would be a lot better received if we had confirmation for more coming. Breather episodes are always good, and given all that happened and what might have come next, this was needed. And showing this book ending without major deaths or the like is good for what this story is. After all, not every problem ends with someone dying horribly. Sometimes just saying sorry can help begin to make things better, allowing you to try to do better going forward. I'm sure this will be a story vindicated by history as time goes on.
Not everyone’s life is dramatic, not everyone’s problems are over the top crazy and unsolvable. A lot of us have these mundane problems much like Ryan and Min

Yes I saw them as a couple, but mainly because I'm biased as their designs made me think of Richie Tozier and Eddie Kaspbrak from Stephen King's IT. Oh and also the whole Art Museum section also made me feel of IT.
I love both views of them being a couple or just being “brother” super close friends.

Well I didn't think the Season sucked but it didn't really bring anything big to the lore of the show.
Season introduced the train and showed Amelia.
Season 2 showed how the non humans live in the train and how they deal with it too.
Season 3 introduced a cult of passengers that didn't have proper guidance in the train and teased a future Season with Amelia and the little girl
Season 4 had an interesting premise with this time having two passengers that went in at the same time and carry the same number, but that was about it. It did technically show when Amelia took over the train, but I was hoping it would show more closely how she did it. I also think it was interesting that it teased the concept of having passengers that don't want to leave the train even if their numbers go to 0.
Overall not a bad Season but a little disappointing knowing that it's the last season of the show due to a stupid cancelation.

I don't understand why people wanna go back the past and see what happened with her and one-one and I did feel some type of way about book 4 taking place in the past before book 1 which isn't bad tbh, I actually thought of book 2 taking place before book 1 after i finished book 1, an I think having a book take place before the main book was added kinda late i rather go forward see new things,

@@Yellowstone3000 well one thing you gotta take into consideration is that the protagonist of the show is Emilia. We are just seeing it through the perspective of other characters and they have their own stories as well but the main story is hers.
Book 1 introduces her as a sympathetic villain
Book 2 doesn't really have her but it does have added lore that shows the aftermath of her loosing the train.
Book 3 brings her back and this time she is trying to make amends for the damage she caused the train while at the same time introducing a daughter figure that she created.
Book 4 shows when she took over the train.
One thing you should know if you don't is that Book 5 was meant to be a movie that was gonna focus on Emilia. It was also gonna work on same time with Book 4. Meaning they would share scenes. So it probably would've dived in to when she got on the train, when she met One, when everything went south, what happened to her companion which was a turtle.
Then there should only be 3 books left because the creator did say he wanted Book 8 to be the last. So im assuming Book 6 would go back to the future with someone new, but Emilia would still be the focus before Book 8 being the last one that gets her off the train
I personally never saw them as gay. My friend and I have a really similar relationship in which we are really close and basically like siblings. I think they were just really close friends
The problem is gay guys can have friends that do end up romantic. Speaking from my own experience I had a work mate who I ended up close to and we later ended up with a complicated relationship(it didnt last but we still remain close friends to this day). Friends to lovers trope is a trope for a reason because it does happen in real life.

I think if Owen could've made them gay; he would've. He seems like a super progressive guy (heck, Kez shows attraction to both guys and girls in the show), but I doubt HBO thought they could get away with the focus of their "children's" cartoon being repairing a gay relationship and working through that. Since this season takes place (assumedly) during the AIDS epidemic, Owen would've likely want to address that. It'd all stack up to be pretty heavy, and while I want it, I doubt any executive would. Book 4's script was also approved quiet a long time ago (early 2019), not too long after the Steven Universe wedding. I don't think the full effects of that had really been felt in the industry. If we see the renewal and 4 more books, I hope Owen works explicit LGBTQ+ rep in. I don't think the show queerbaited at all, but I think people are allowed to be upset. I would hope they're upset at the network execs and not the production team at least.
I wouldn't say we were queerbaited. Although I personally interpreted their relationship as something more than platonic, I think it's pretty great as it was. I saw them as two queercoded characters with good arcs, which is the important part of any character.

When min was like" it felt like the same thing you always do" (running away) but bro....YOU ALWAYS RAN AWAY FIRST 0:30 . It's like you always expect Ryan to come after you or something- and he does because he believes you just need a little push to get started ( when in reality even though Min played the long with the band dream, but on the inside he never really believed in himself). Ryans not going to wait for you min. And its not because Ryan thinks/knows that you weren't ready, he didn't understand that you weren't, Ryan just felt that you backed out and left him there alone. And Ryan doesn't back down. So he moved forward as best he could.

I think we really need to stop to point any interaction to make gay couple ( i mean i blush when i'm hug sometines doesnt mean anything). Relationships can be morE simple or more complex than that , and i really thinks they act like really good bro. We fantazise a lot when we say gay couple but its the relationship what really important. In steeven universe for example i'm more about the good relationship and less about theirs orientation.
I think the choice they made with the relationships was smart- now everyone gets to be happy :)

I really loved Book 4! I connected with the characters on a personal level, so I admit I have a bias, but I thought it was phenomenal. I also agree that the comedy was amazing

I was hoping to get to learn more about the inner workings of the train before book 4 was announced, and after the announcement I was hoping we'd at least get to see how Amelia took the train over. Unfortunately, there wasn't much revealed at all.

It was a perfectly good book, i liked that we got s little cooldown after book 3, but it's just not a Finale. We need to have all the loose ends tied up. Does Grace get her exit? What are Amelia and Hazel up to? WTF happened to that guy that Lake Jacked out of his capsule? I. NEED. ANSWERS
It was called the twin tapes. They were like brothers growing up with a different life style growing up but at the same time they shared a life with each other growing up that's why they both had different numbers around the end

2. Its already pretty muchconfirmed by Owen. When someone asked what book 4 was about, he said it was about the "rock couple" from the campfire care. Then making comparisons to those characters and stuff about Min and Ryan (and refs to the fourth book)
3 I think they got together,but it probably happened AFTER they got off the train
Also... This takes place in the 80s. Coming to terms with being anything other then straight wouldve definitely taken them longer then if this was set now.
They wouldn't just be like "alright we're gay now" and they definitely wouldnt have been all up-front about it and like kissed on the stage at the end or something.

The strength of this show is undeniably its characters, and I think Book 4 came out swinging with those two
Considering how they only just repaired their relationship, I like to think they became a couple post train instead of while on the train because I don't like rushing anything. I love the death of the author thing they have going on in this show

I was constantly questioning if they were going to be a couple or not. I think it could definitely go there eventually if the writers wanted to. I'm a fan of any story that explores a close emotional relationship between two male characters with subtlety and nuance. And I greatly dislike that there isn't more exploration of this idea in Western media. Shonen anime has been doing this for decades and the West is finally starting to embrace it.

I don't believe it was queerbaiting however I think using death of the author as an excuse for not making them queer is kind of faulty. Like a lot of us simply want to see canon queer characters. We don't want showrunners to make us have to headcanon to get any form of queer rep. As much as I love Infinity Train I feel like one of its flaws is only making queer characters through headcanons. We can speculate all we want about Tulip being a trans girl or Lake being n-b or Rymin happening but that's very different from seeing it on screen.
As a gay man myself I definitely see where you're coming from, but imo Infinity Train shouldn't really be criticised for it when it's treated all of it's potential "hetero pairings" in the same way. If it was just this one, the potential mlm couple specfically, I'd be raising an eyebrow. But because of Owen explaining his writing philosophy on Reddit, I totally get why he'd want to keep it ambiguous (not that I was ever in doubt that not making them gay wasn't a malicious choice)
We definitely do need way more MLM in children's animation though, it's rarer than it's counterpart and I was very excited about the prospect of Infinity Train being one of the show's setting the trend. However, I understand the choices behind not confirming them as a couple, and I think it was the right choice to tell the story that they wanted to.
It doesn't really read as a romance story to me, and adding that element on top of everything else probably would've spoiled the broth

@@CharlesJThomas We technically have seen 2 straight couples with Tulip's parents and Amelia and Alrick. I understand that it's the philosophy of the show runner and I can't really change that. I can still criticize how said mentality affects minority representation. Especially because Infinity Train is PERFECT for dealing with queer issues. You could easily fit in stories of someone being outed, someone dealing with and discovering their queerness on the train, and (the one I wanted most) a trans character dealing with dysphoria and all the issues that come with being trans through the train. So much potential that likely won't be utilized due to this philosophy (and due to the premature cancellation hehe)

Personally, I found book 4 to be the weakest of the series.
I'll have to re-watch it to really get a handle on why, but I feel like Min's story as less about accepting himself for who he is and more giving up on his dreams for Ryan's sake. From the very first scene of Min and Ryan performing for their family's I got the feeling that Min's music is something personal and private just for him. It felt forced to have them playing for an audience in the last scene. I just wasn't getting the impression that was what Min really wanted.
The tone of the book feels off as well. I know it was suppose to be a break from the dark, rough books that came before it but just doesn't flush with the first three books. It seems that books 1-3 were their own overall story and that book 4 was going to be the start of a new multi-book arc so maybe that would have made it fit better. As it is, book 4 feels like the odd one out. Its not that I hate book 4. It just doesn't seem to fit.
While my favorite book is book 2 I definitely prefer this one to 1 and 3, despite being a fan of horror and gore and edgy stuff. I do get your perspective, but like Min I was a gifted kid with predetermined path to follow in a way. I am good at drawing and writing but whenever push came to shove I ran. I ran far away from the possibility that might end in failure and towards what I knew as “secure”. I also know people who are like Ryan, who act before they think and I often feel like They leave but usually I am the one who leaves, who isn’t there. Also the platonic/romantic relationship is familiar to me due to me and my best friend having a very similar relationship where neither of us knows or cares where exactly we stand except “I’ll always be there for you when push comes to shove” .
I do get this is not relatable to everyone and might feel forced to share your hobbies like that, but personally I feel Lake’s arc and their arc far more than I do Tulip’s or Grace’s as I am someone who is hyper aware of my issues and trauma and I rarely lie (I am blatantly honest unless I don’t care about someone/something or I’m in a professional setting).

@@venusgin7779 Book 1 felt the closest to me, I feel Tulip is the most relatable to my life. Very logical and intelligent, and using that intelligence to justify not dealing with her emotions.
My parents divorced when I was in high school and right after graduation I lost my best friend. I went on to excel in college and become the youngest Phd candidate in my university's history. Tulip's intellectual approach to problems, her parents and her goodbye to One-One and Atticus felt so personal to me. Maybe it's silly but Tulip feels like a mirror to me. I use intellect to deal with all of my problems and often don't see how this can make me come off as cold and unfeeling. Only recently I've started to examine my emotions and let others see who I am. I guess that's why Tulip's story is the most personal to me.
To me book 1 will always be the best.
@@christopherrasmussen9989 I do get a lot of things Tulip goes through, but the thing is that I went through them differently. My parents were never married and they split a year after my birth. I have seen my father once a week until he got a job at Ethiopia and then i saw him every six month. He also got married to a woman with a child quite a bit older than me, which is fine, I wanted my father to be happy. My mother on the other hand got into a toxic relationship which left her broken and as my grandmother and grandfather are awfully emotionally distant I needed to take care of my mother. I was also bullied in school for my masculine features and emotional personality, so I did what was most logical to me (I have been a sponge child that just sucks in all the knowledge since I was born basically) which was completely cut off any and all emotions. I’ve actually successfully done so and only things I could “feel” were white anger (empty, physically expressed anger instead of emotional one) and extreme numbness that lead to tears oftentimes. This permanently impaired my empathy, I am still trying to understand emotion from a non-logical standpoint because all I know is physical manifestations I saw on media that my body mimics and the logical line of it happening, something many people find incredibly creepy. I’ve also never feared death as I’ve witnessed a lot of it. I lost my great grandfather and father’s mother so early I didn’t remember them, I lost one of my kindergarten friends at age 6 to a drunk driver’s hit-and-run, I saw my cats kittens meet awful ends, my first cat died in the garage after getting hit by a car whilst pregnant and dragging herself back home with a broken jaw and fractured spine and I had to leave her like that and go to school(I was maybe second grade), I lost many more cats over the years because I live in rural surroundings where cats rarely get sterilized, I lost my great grandma who is the 2nd closest person to me in grade school, and I lost my mother almost two years ago. With a lot of those losses I made a distasteful jokes like “one step closer to being Batman”... and I’ve never had a proper relationship because I can’t truly love anyone, that is an emotion too complex for my body to mimic so I don’t experience it in any form. However, I never pushed these memories away and even if I wanted to my dreams are incredibly vivid and I am forced to relive or to live through different universes where my loved ones are alive but I am fully aware I am dreaming because I am a lucid dreamer. I have trouble forming connections, not pushing people away, not using cognition to solve my issues because they need empathy to be solved, and much more. But I never related to tulip.... I don’t know why

Min didn’t give up his dream for Ryan’s sake. His dream was the same as Ryan’s, but he didn’t have the self confidence like Ryan did to pursue, so he just ran away. He lied about not wanting to pursue music because he wanted to do what his parents wanting him to do. He was mostly giving up his dreams for his parents sake until he was finally able to build the confidence to follow his own dream.
Book 4 is my least favorite, not because I can't relate or the chartchers/voices are bad I just felt it was too soft, I understand why but still it felt out of place. I wish it was more dark and intense, ofc cartoons dont have to be relatable, story driven or dark to be good/entertaining but I would have liked if Ryan & Min fought more and then min would of pushed Ryan off the cliff in ep 5 and he would just be hanging there yelling for help!!,then min would panic!! and realize what he has done An help Ryan up. I would have also liked to see how far thier friendship would go, an if they really are/how far they go, an
if they will fall apart like Simon and Grace, or makes it all the way through (obviously they both made it through)

I wasn't a fan of the cat or Amelia's appearance, they was just there for fan service, Samantha didn't have a big role or do much so she could have been left out tbh, as for Amelia we've seen her when she was young in book 1 she could have still been in book 4 without showing her, just keep the sense in with her controlling the steward, denizens were okay I do like the first ones, the Giant pig creepy asf an the moth?/ Butterfly? would have been a great antagonist. I didn't like the end how everyone just apologized after chasing kaz for so long and finally catching up to her, Ryan & min should have apologized on their own.
Book 4 wasn't my cup of tea, I don't hate it and I'll definitely watch it again, I really like the transition in ep1 an I like how we got to see Ryan % min simultaneously that was amazing, I enjoy them fighting in my opinion, and over all it was good and something different

I sincerely didn't like the season as a whole. It had its moment but most of the season was really forgettable, it wasn't emocional to me, most of the cars were boring, the villains were a bad joke and there was a lot of wasted potencial.
That's fair, I personally really liked it but I can see where you're coming from. The villains were meant to be jokey, but I can get why people aren't into that

it was too short and it was too lighthearted. i wasn’t realistic and i HATE it when characters solve there issues quickly (wich aren’t even shown to the extent they could have been). book 3 was perfect it showed the problems to the full extent. no sugarcoating. i hate how the intrusive thoughts was handled. like he just thinks about leaving once. that’s it. if you gonna give your character intrusive thoughts make them worse make how the character reacts and copes differently. the resolution was short and inaccurate. once they realized the problem all of a sudden it’s resolved. plus come on. they intentionally made them look like a couple just like they intentionally made lake look trans i think the only good part of this season was the bathroom scene

Gotta be honest..I didn't like this book so much.
Mostly because I didn't like Kez or the comedy or the denizens of the cars.
Like, the only thing I liked was Ryan and Min-Gi and their interaccions (The good and bad ones). I felt like they deserved better, but that's on me.
In the other hand, Min-Gi telling Ryan he wants to go to NY with him was a little too quickly in my opinion. And how he didn't felt bad at all about his friend thinking in living him behind when he got his exit.
Their disscusions sometimes felt like they were going nowhere, and I kind expected them to grow with the show and not just in the last two episodes.
And about the shipp: I do shipp them and I think It would be great if they were in love; however, the way their issues were in the book didn't leave place for romance. At least not for now. Maybe in their future lives.
I would prefered the season to be about they feeling romantic tension? Sure. But the crew is the one who make the show, not us.
Still, I think this season could be better. Bye.

So glad I'm skipping this one because no, we didn't need a breather, we needed answers and conclusions. It's also upsetting to hear that hey didn't go through with the gay but I'm also not surprised that they didn't. Infinity Train isn't ground breaking; it's riddled with hinting and tokenism and always has been.
I don't believe them when they say this is the last season either, because they said that about season three and now we're viewing season four. Seems like the networks have figured out the Steven Universe method of feast or famine really does well for immediate ratings.
