Wow I hadn't heard that sound for 40 years. When you got it dialed in better it almost brought tear to my eye. I spent many hours around this type motor in the US Coast Guard operating small boats for search and rescue in the 70's. Beautiful music to my soul. We had twins and on the reruns back to base I would lay on the engine housing and sleep like a baby. Thanks mate you made a yanks day with this vid.
Everybody needs a friend as knowledgeable as Adrian. Having followed your progress for the last 49 videos, I think I was almost as excited as you were about the diesel firing up and sounding like a wet dream. Great job Stu and crew.
What a fantastic rebuild. The sound of a well tuned diesel really is something to get you out of bed (in a good way). Absolutely stoked to see the hard work paying off and what a beautiful engine to push the ole girl along with.
I’m happy for you Stu. Not only for having a great running reliable engine, but for having true mates willing to help you along this journey. You are truly blessed. God bless Adrian and his skills.
And the mighty Detroit roars to life!!!! Children scream and run away, animals cower and satisfied men get a beer and a smoke!!!! A fine day was had by all!!!!! Merry Christmas !!!!!!
Your face when she fired up! It's great to see someone truly enjoy the rewards of their hard work. Been following since the days of the green machine, what a magic moment. Congrats Stu.
From the comfort of my easy chair, it started as a simple search for a bit of info on the Roots type blower. Although In my 8th & 1/2 decade of life, mechanical things still draw my interest. One of the links took me to Dangar Marine here on YT. Little did I know I would be taken on a journey that would be so enlightening, educational, and entertaining, that I would watch several hours of something I previously not given a moments thought, I will never do, or even need to know. The 'actors', the critters about the work environment, the unpretentious sharing of knowledge gained over years of experience. Camera work, and editing too. I want to especially mention not having to mute the sound if a kid or other sensitive ears entered the room. Thanks for that. The lack of 'adult' language in gearhead videos seems to be a rarity. I can't express how much I enjoyed every minute of the 4-71 rebuild. When she fired up, I shared your joy. Thank you. Wishing you both continued success.
Thanks mate, I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos. I've met several of my younger viewers at boat shows etc and I would hate for them not to be able to watch along with their parents. :)
Amazing how much better you looked after that engine got tuned and running so well. When you started the vid, I thought it was your ghost doing the opening sequence. Glad that motor is running so flawlessly, you've earned this win.
Hahaha that thing sounds awesome. Can’t wait to see it in the boat. That Adrian guy seems like he really saved you a lot of anguish. Good thing you met him.
Wow, goes to show how critical a good tune is for proper performance. Never ceases to amaze me how many people spend thousands on rebuilds and parts, then won't even tune the damned thing properly...good job Stu and Adrian.
This vid is Aussie heaven. Beer, Detroit's, Subarus, Utes, and both metric and imperial measurements being used. Love you guys! Great job on that rumbler!
it's always reassuring to have blokes around who know their stuff, she's getting close now mate...... can't wait to see the boat move under her own power.
Awesome result, so good having someone who is dialled in on the particular thing youre working on, especially when youve spent that much money on it, a real peace of mind. Amazing how much a decent tune cleaned the emissions up. Cant wait to hear it under load!
Wow, nice job, really sounds good! Stu, even with what you know, working with Adrian and watching (helping) him fine tune that Detroit Diesel really adds to the experience level that might be needed when you least expect it! One step closer!
Hope the owners of those two vehicles in the shop like "eau-du-Detroit".Congrats on the first start, love the sound of a Detroit, had 2 of them in my boat.
What a great Christmas present! You can keep all your jingling bells and carols, the sound of that engine running was the best music ever. Well done and I'm happy for you that it all came together beautifully and without incident. Hats off to your Perkins expert! Looking forward to seeing her installed and pushing the boat. Great job and Seasons' Greetings from Ireland.
You mentioned not doing much editing for a more like being there kind of natural-feeling video, and you definitely accomplished that with me. With the addition of smell-a-vision (substitute a drop or two of WD-40 and/or your favorite reducer/thinner and you'd take me back in time 50 years or so, when I was taught automotive skills by people like Adrian--who I now regard as a diesel-tuning savant). Adrian with-out-a-doubt has his tune-up sh*t together, big time. That engine sounded oh, so sweet when he finished dialing it in, and without it belching even a tiny bit of smoke, too. (Finding a worthy prop might be a problem, though.) What a treat it was to hear his informative, matter of fact explanations. Brilliant!
Video left me with a huge smile on my face. So pleased for you. The Detroit sounds great, and nice to see the gearbox turning too. Huge props to Adrian for his expertise and his way of describing what he was doing too. Now waiting for the great mating of hull to motive power!
Wow Adrian's is an ace in that motor, that motor sounds so sweet can't wait to see that in the boat and chugging along I think we're all going to celebrate when it runs in that boat thanks Stu my day is complete
Fascinating!! So much more goes into mechanical injection than just plugging an electrical connector in and hoping it squirts.. Awesome vid brother, Adrains knowledge is invaluable! Artist at work..
Ran 71 Detroit's for a year on the Perfume River and Cua Viet River in I Corp RVN..Hearing that distinctive Detroit sound does take me back as a 19 year old Engineman just trying to keep it wired tight. GREAT VIDEO.
@@DangarMarine Adrian seems to have gained a wealth of priceless knowledge. Knew this motor like the back of his hand. Adjusting and tuning to factory specs and settings without a service manual. Thats one mechanic I would love to work along side of for a few years or few months. Alot of knowledge shared in this video. Leaving it unedited was the best idea.
After all that smoke I was looking sideways at Adrian but then he made the adjustment ......that’s experience hey it sounds cool can’t wait to see the wake
Too many things to like. The raw video of hanging out in the garage. The amazing engine rebuild. The anticipation of more videos.
The dogs.
Thanks Harry! :)
"...take a look with our rear endoscope..." These pearls do not go unnoticed - LOL!
Yeah, I'm stealing that one :)

Hey mate. I haven't had any history with these motors but I had a very similar reaction. It is such a great sound. Merry Christmas!
The 26'!
Dangar Marine Merry Christmas to you and yours too.
Dangar Marine Merry Christmas to you and yours too.
A sweet and unique sound. Better than a V8 petrol motor I reckon.

Great job Stu and crew.
My kind of startup video. Good choice in leaving the process of startup in because that IS what we want to see. Keep it up.
He's good,, can you keep him,, need more diesel guys like him,
We sure do.
Learned a stack from these videos thanks Stu and Adrian!
What a fantastic rebuild. The sound of a well tuned diesel really is something to get you out of bed (in a good way). Absolutely stoked to see the hard work paying off and what a beautiful engine to push the ole girl along with.
Thanks Damien!

Who doesn't love the smell of diesel in the morning? That motor is a thing of beauty!
'Rearender scope' hahahaha. Great post Stu.

Adrian - what a hero! Hooray for the Detroit ticking again. Puppy cuteness. Lovely Sunday morning!
mumblbee bee Guy’s a diesel wizard.
Adrians point about the oil in the after credit scene was worth the wait. Great job.
Good info for me doing the run in. That's the sort of mistake I may have made with this engine.

Very lucky. :)

The sound of that engine , YES!!!! Amazing , sounds alot different than my 4-53
Don't worry about making your videos too long. We'll watch it all. Also, don't edit too much, it's nice to see the rest of what is going on.
Thanks mate.
The old Detroit pures like a kitten. I wish I could hang out with these guys for a bit. I could learn so much! Great job gentlemen. Cheers!
The convo at 18.23....I love workshop banter...... watching this is like being at work
This guy was really a godsend on that Detroit Diesel!
Sure was.
It's hard to find the expertise that Adrian has. Great job. Adrian saved you a lot of grief.
He did save me a whole heap of grief. I don't want to think about where things would be at now without him.
Best smoke machine I've seen EVER. Great job guys.
Thanks Cameron.
Adrian worth his weight in gold. Great work in getting the Detroit up and running.

When running well, that is a sweet sounding motor
Had to watch the video twice, had tears in my eyes the first time. Awesome effort mate.👍🏻

Coopers should be sponsoring you, Stu. Very natural product placement there.
