Watching the news about the terrible bush fires in NSW. Hope you and your neighbours are safe.
I'm a fabricator in the US, so I really enjoyed this video. I use plasma cutters pretty often. For thick materials like you are cutting...I'd just run it wide open and adjust the speed to keep it from blowing back. Also, you are right about running through the end of the work to keep the tip cleaner. Keep up the nice work, and ignore all the safety nuts. In the US, must of us who are self employed and don't have a Safety Manager to watch us, work the same way as you...well, except we wear shoes. :)

I like the new chuck handle.
once you get the puddle correct try and concentrate on keeping an even speed and correct angle, trying to react to fluctuations as you see them usually just puts you behind the 8 ball because your reacting to stuff thats already happened, it may feel counter intuitive but it produces better results. its especially noticeable with TIG welding but applies to all processes including oxy and plasma cutting. once worked with a bloke who used a piano timer to time the dabs when TIG welding.i use much faster dabs so it wasn't for me ,but it worked well for him he got very nice results.

Here's a good tip for your welding...
Pre-heat your work.
The Boeing Lube helps keep the MIG torch nozzle from fouling. You can also apply a thin film to the work piece to help reduce spatter from sticking. I even put a very lite film on my welding helmet viewing lens.
Will give it a go.
As a Temporary fan belt for your drill press.Steal one of you ladies stockings,my dad always kept them in the boot of the car just in case a belt snapped when we were out in the bush in Zimbabwe.All the beat to you for 2020 love that Detroit engine.

Hi Stu, I'm not pro welder but just on the subject of welding I noticed at 8:55 while you were tacking up, you held the welder clamp with both hands. While this is fine is does limit the amount of control over the tip of the rod especially on a new rod. If you try and hold the clamp with your right hand and hold the actual rod with your left hand as close as possible to the weld pole as your glove can take. I find at helps and awful lot. Also being in a comfortable position I find is so important to a good weld. Keep up the great work Stu. Love the project

Same motor mounts I use on my 540 CI V8. With a 620 hp engine they have been totally reliable over the past ten years.

Always keep a roll of 'keyway belt' on hand, whether ashore or at sea. It will get you home and finish your tasks without having to run to the belt shop. 30 years as a master maintenance Tech taught me that, plus a few decades of sailing and motoring...

Love your shop, the equipment may be old but it gets the job done. Basic measuring, cutting and welding, a few bits of escaped livestock. Wait, that's my back yard!
Hi Stu, nice looking solid mounts. Looks like they pivot a bit too. Some of the angles on the old ones must be there for clearances inside the engine bay. Hopefully it all hooks up well when lowered into the boat. Wouldn't want to hold up the crane guy for sure. Love the chickens. My mom raised them when I was little and would go with her to the feed store. Loved the smell of the animal feeds

With regard to any “solid” lube, they work best if you dip the drill bit into them and fill the flutes. That way, as the bit heats up, the lubricant flows down into the piece you are drilling helping to keep everything cool and.....well.....lubed.

Hey Stu, that drill lubricant is probably the best stuff you can use. Boelube was invented by Boeing Aerospace for drilling holes in airplane parts. Keep up the good work!!! Oh and one observation....boots man boots....😂😂👍

The engine mounts look good and strong, so you should be ok as long as the angles fit up right. You may need to make some tapered wedges to fit under the flex mounts to align the prop shaft to the engine. It won't be long till she is in the engine room.
Yes, it will be interesting to see how the alignment goes but where there is a will there is a way.

Dangar Marine well I don’t look at it much different then Patreon. You essentially have business of putting out video. Some people show support on Patreon and others can in other ways but I indefinitely understand what you’re saying.
Like me I was thinking going to give you that Detroit Tune Up kit while you were in the States a few months ago. It seems people send you packages from time to time like Dan who sent you drill taps. Not a lot of difference except that it might save us overseas viewers some shipping costs if Amazon has it in the AU.
Even if you don’t plug it in your videos and just add a link to the description.
Once you set it up then show Damian and Jess from project Brupeg next time you see them. They apparently don’t understand Amazon. Maybe give them a little assistance. Since they are proudly community funded it seems that giving people another way to support might be helpful.

The most important feature of mounting your engine is a collision block. This protects the engine from moving if vessel collides with a dock or another craft. Usually it looks like a large flat triangle about 4mm from front of strongest part of the engine at the base.
Interesting, I'll look into ways of adding that.
Also known as rake and ramming stops. Rake for when you get hit from behind and ramming for when you run into something.
You didn’t need them with solid mounts, but you may now with flexible mounts.
Stu: With resilient mounts, when doing the shaft alignment, you need to account for the mount deflection caused by the weight of the inboard shaft end, so that the stuffing gland is not required to act as a bearing. The mount company should be able to give you a procedure for doing this. Basically it involves centering the shaft in the stuffing gland and adding weight onto the end of the gear to mimic the shaft weight so the mounts deflect the right amount, then aligning shaft to gear, and then removing the weights and the shaft gland centering support. Hi Stu, In the US generator business, we call the rubber bits in the mounts "isolators." It is looking good.
My last chicken died of old age last week; it was a blessing since she was very lonely.

Hint , when you drill an angle positioned as you did at 16:20 on, use a thin packer under the area being drilled to fill in the gap produced by the radius of the internal corner of the angle, or alternatively chamfer off the corner of your wood block so the angle sits flat on your block
Yes, it would be nice to do something to make it sit more steadily while drilling.
Spent many years as a welder, aside from grinding rute passes we only ground two types of welds. One that was in the way and those that looked like a dog turds

Even a very small pilot hole would make a big difference to your hole quality (roundness, finish, location...), and would be easier on your press. Keep in mind that the center of the drill is not turning as fast as the outside edges. Matter of fact, the exact center isn't turning at all relative to the metal. Without a pilot hole, you're trying to push the tip thru the metal, requiring significant force. A small, perhaps 4mm dia, pilot hole would help a lot. No need to step up, just go 4mm then 18mm.

Yes, I'll try experimenting with different size pilot holes to see which works best on the next ones. The other thing I like about no pilot hole is that you can fill the start of the hole with lube and it won't just run out the pilot hole.
2 things I've found helpful in my welding projects: 1 you can get magnifier lenses for your welding helmet (so you don't need magnifier glasses also) and 2. Get a 7" or 9" grinder! Working with thicker metal, a 4 1/2" takes forever!
For sure, the big grinder makes a big difference. Just bought some new disks for mine yesterday.

About your drill press, mine is same type and I use home made belt dressing made out of pine resin and meths to prevent belt slip and thereby increase belt life.
Original belts are poor and are easily damaged when changing speeds so make sure enough slack. Rounding off the sharp outer edges on pulleys is also advisable. Suggest you drill at lowest possible speed and apply coolant but these drill presses tend to slip belt unless you apply belt dressing. Looking forward to see test run of boat.

I started learning stick welding in 1972 in high school. It's one of the skills that has helped keep me employed all these years. AND I still learning new tricks.
At current time I work as a welder fabricator at a quarry but I end up doing many things including running a 5 yard loader or dump truck, or I could be turning a part with the lathe.
It's good to see you trying and learning new skills.

Having personally rebuilt a few Jabsco pumps for marine use The "extra" part may be for a sister (similar) model that you don't need for yours. Check with your supplier or Jabsco directly. I've been running in the Saint Clair river bordering Michigan, USA and Ontario, Canada for the last 50 years and seen this type of thing before.
Yes, I have noticed quite a few kits come with parts to cover multiple models so not all bits are need for an individual pump.
Just remember to use stainless steel nuts and bolts everywhere. Nice job. Love your videos.

On your drilling and pilot holes, for small sizes like 3/4, just do one small pilot drill the same size as the chisel point of the drill (the bit that doesn't really cut). Drills only grab when the step up in size from pilot to final is too small.

I use Boelube a lot as being an AMT. When you use it take out what you need to use for the job your doing so you don't contaminate the whole jar.

Those are the same engine mounts I’ve used. When you get around to installing, you may want to initially set so the prop shaft is a tad bit high in the shaft log. These mount do settle quickly, most of it in a day or so. Check hight adjustments again in a week, then two months, a year and finally every two years. Most of the time you will find all you need to do is raise the two equally that carries the most weight, the one’s under the engine. On second thought looking at a previous video it looks like all your mounts may have similar weight sharing ( not like mine).
trick to learn when doing right angle welds. Weaving rod side to side just a little bit creates a much nicer weld. Another one is to angle the rod to either the thickest piece OR to the one going vertical a bit. When welding on something with a downhill angle I like to start at top and push the weld back into itself as I go. Seems to work well for me.
Yes, I think it would have gone a lot better that way, I really did have the wrong rod angle on the first one.

Pilot holes make the work easier, less stress on equipment and quicker cutting.
I grind my own bits, and the edge will last longer with a pilot hole.
The harder the material, the more you need a pilot, mild steel may allow for a one shot drilling process, but, harder material will not be so easy.

That lube is similar to Acculube LS-10. I love the stuff. I find it less messy as well compared to using a cutting oil. LS-10 Smells better then oil. It is Vegetable based.

For fabrication, they make magnetic 90deg angles to hold stuff in the correct alignment for tacking before welding.
They are about $15. There are different size ones too.
They sre the type of tool that you wonder how mankind ever progressed without. Any welding supply or often steel supply places have them.
If you are going to be doing larger holes get a Annular cutter with a Morse taper adapter

if you tack only at the corners it eliminates having to grind them down, also gives extra weld meat at the corners which is where any cracks will start from

Except at the starting corner, better to tack a little away from the starting corner so the rod gets some heat before it hits the tack. ✌

I have been following this and just feel terrible about the loss of homes, peoples business and of course the devastation of all the wildlife. It was a heartbreaking story hearing of the people that were actually pushed to the sea. Our hearts go out to the people of Australia and hope nothing effects you where you live. It's me over here again. A hot tip on setting the engine on the rails. Put the mounts on the engine loosely then drop the engine where you want it. Mark the holes on the rails. Lift the engine up enough to get clearance to drill holes. Then lower engine and insert rail bolts. Tighten everything to spec once you are happy with the final alignment. As close tolerance as you have those mount holes dropping the engine onto those pins is going to be a real bear. Even a millimeter of variance will make setting the engine super difficult if you bolt down the mounts then attempt to set the engine. Don't even ask how I know this. :)

Hi Stu, hope you had a safe and happy New Year. We can see the smoke building outside, stay safe with your fire fighting, as of Jan 1. Five states of Australia are alight and the authorities have admitted there is no hope of putting them out before mother nature wants them out. Be extra careful this Friday, another 40 Deg C day with high winds.
