    I loved how you went through the story - did you seriously complete it with exactly zero seconds left, or was that set up for the video? :D Prince was definitely a huge influence on Tomb Raider - it’s odd that I didn’t really notice at the time. And both games slowly turn evil and insane as they go on - Prince with its weird unpredictable magic, Tomb Raider with its hideous emaciated bone creatures and flesh walls

    • @AxMania
      @AxMania  Год назад +6

      Hi David, thank you so much, and thank you for watching! Haha, I must admit that I did that for dramatic effect! 😅 But it was close to the truth. I entered Level 12B (where the ceiling tiles fall down on the Prince) with 2 minutes left on the clock. Then I went to the screen just before Jaffar, and waited until there were about 20 seconds left. I had actually hoped I could hit the "1 Second Left"-mark, but... oh well.
      That's a really good point, I hadn't even thought about that! Both games do indeed become progressively more bizarre.

    When I first played Prince of Persia, I immediately noticed the run, careful step, catch-and-hang, and spike death animations were almost identical to Tomb Raider. So was the fucking difficulty.

    There's really a lot of parallels between PoP and TR.
    The movement is very similar with requiring running jumps, and how the level layout is tile based so you can easily judge distances. Carefully dropping down heights by grabbing a ledge is also similar. And of course the common deathtrap of falling into spikes.
    You could even say that the mirror prince is similar to bacon Lara in concept.

    Wonderful video.
    I grew up on Flashback, we had it for the AMIGA and it's still one of my all time favorite games of all time.
    I know younger players probably find the controls frustrating because they want to be able to turn around on a dime. But once you start thinking about the controls, not as split second maneuvers and more about buffering inputs and seeing the patterns, you actually fall in love with the heaviness of it all.
    When I played TR as a kid, coming off Flashback, it felt like second nature. Because I knew the game wasn't about looking before you leap, it was actually the opposite. Planning your next move.
    As a kid, I loved this because it meant that my reactions didn't matter as much as long as I was paying attention and could buffer the buttons. It's so fuckjng rewarding

I just adore the graphics of that game, and I'm of course on board with that style of gameplay as well. The way these cinematic platformers (and Tomb Raider) make you carefully maneuver a character, makes them so much more immersive, as it feels more "dangerous" to play them, in a way.

    Assassin's Creed was originally a spin-off about the Prince's bodyguards, who were assassins. The idea was rejected because it was a PoP game that didn't focus on the Prince, so it was made into its own game/series.

    PoP was one of the first videogames I've ever seen, my dad showed it to me at work, years before we had any computer at home. I remember him demostrating the strategy for killing guards, sheating his sword to let the enemy get close and then quickly unsheathe and stab :D I've tried to play it maybe a few times in my life but never seriously (i.e. getting maybe to the second level?) but I've seen a lot of it by others playing, so I knew about many of these things that PoP and TR have in common already that you showed here, but not all. It's definitely cool to see it all listed! Also it's funny, it actually took me a long time to understand TR's grid system (I didn't speak English back then so Lara's explanations in the gym didn't help), so I had both "this thing in PoP is like in TR" and "this thing in TR is like in PoP" realizations over time :D

    To answer your question about why the player character doesn't look Persian, it's because he isn't. Nor is he a prince, at least not during the course of the game. If I recall correctly from either the instruction manual or the back of the box, he's supposed to be an adventurer from a foreign land, whom the princess fell in love with due to his bravery. Jaffar imprisoned him merely out of jealousy and spite. The title of the game refers not to who the player character currently is, but who he will become should he succeed in rescuing the princess.

Strangely enough, or in my case it is so very fitting, I really liked the Angel of Darkness of this franchise: Prince of Persia 3D (because of its story, unique atmospheres/'feel', and music), but the original holds a special place in my heart as well (apart from The Sands of Time, for obvious reasons). Like yourself, I never finished it though, and in the second one I could never find my way out of the caves with the flying carpet, so the only thing I could do was replaying the first few levels over and over again :( Cool New Year's wish by the way to play the first one again and this time to also beat it! I have a similar long-term goal for the games after The Sands of Time...
    Prince of Persia definitely influenced Tomb Raider, apart from Indiana Jones of course. Then much later on, out of development for Prince of Persia arose the first Assassin's Creed game (and thereby that series). I really like single-player action-adventure games ((more) puzzle-driven and/or (more) story-driven), so having more unique video game series in this genre existing next to each other would be ideal in my eyes - this is why I'm hoping PoP will make its way back to us some day (hopefully soon!). By the way, _I Finished A Video Game_ (RUclips channel) has made an retrospective on the entire Prince of Persia series, which is a great watch! I recommend it to anyone that is even slightly interested in PoP; even if you have not played the games, it is really interesting.

      Thank you so much, I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed it! I want to do a complete Prince of Persia series ranking some day, so I need to complete Prince of Persia 3D as well, which indeed seems to be the black sheep 😃 I played it for some hours as a kid, and it never really clicked for me back then, but I should probably give it another go. Haha, you really should try and complete the first game, it's very satisfying to do so! It's such a good game, still, after all these years. I would've loved the game even if I hadn't grown up with it, I'm sure.
      I agree, I hope Prince of Persia will be back (for good) some day. Right now, I'm a little bit excited about the next Assassin's Creed game, as it's set in the Middle-East, which makes it feel even more Prince of Persia-like. Even though I'm kind of sick and tired of Ubisoft open-world games - and open-world games in general, even. Ohh, that sounds interesting, thank you for the recommendation! I'll check that out.

    You make a good case, though of course it's not the only inspiration when there's Indiana dealing with similar traps (and being a tomb raider himself).
    There's another similarity, Laura has timed sequences to open a door and have to speed through a death gauntlet before it seals again. Luckily there isn't a time limit to complete the game/level itself, so we can feel at ease to stroll about, admire the atmosphere, and look for secrets.
    Prince of Persia (DOS) has been a favorite of mine since it came out, though it took me until 2012 to actually get to level 9 with time enough to go on and kill Jafar, though that last reflection puzzle stumped me a while. Now I still need to replay and finish PoP2 - I got to the flame long ago (which I understand was pretty close), but couldn't figure the counter intuitive way to progress (the reflection puzzle of that game). So many cool moments in that sequel though.

    Do you have any other recommendations for games like classic Tomb Raider? Surprisingly, no one really ever copied classic Tomb Raider's style of puzzle based exploration which a large emphasis on precise, third person platforming despite how famous it is. Even the newer Tomb Raiders have a very different design philosophy and opted for more of an combat focus with an emphasis on more linear levels and cinematic storytelling

    • @AxMania
      @AxMania  Год назад +1

      Indiana Jones & The Infernal Machine feels like a classic Tomb Raider game actually! I'm playing through it for the first time myself right now. It's a bit more stiff and clunky in its' controls, but it feels like a Tomb Raider clone. There's also a great little indy game called Treasures of the Aegean that feels very much like Tomb Raider, even if it's a 2D-game. Yeah, the newer Tomb Raider games don't resemble classic Tomb Raider at all :(

  • @dspmcmirror
    @dspmcmirror Год назад +1

    It is very hard to convey to newer generations how a classic game remains great despite advancements being made to every aspect of production since then. These classic titles were influential and laid the groundwork for other artists to build off of. But to the unaided eye, it can feel dated today. Those who grew up with the classics have a level of appreciation that easily gets missed by people who are fresh to the scene. To the oldie, it's value is self-evident and requires no explanation. To the newie, the later Prince of Persia is denser in entertainment, is more accessible, provides shorter gaps between puzzle-solving gratification, has three meaty dimensions, and is on a more modern platform ergo better.
    I love AoD but noticed in recent years the game is heavily inspired thematically and plot-wise by popular games and movies. It's like an amalgamation of bits that worked well in other successful franchises. Which is sad. I like to think the games are unique nuggets of brilliance. But whatever they're still great.

    I think when creating TR6 they were inspired by PoP 1, because the most difficult thing there is just movement) At one time I was very impressed with the PoP WW game because of the soundtrack, but I always didn’t like something in these games .. More precisely, how the prince moves , his model seems to be tied to all objects, it’s hard to just jump high, or turn exactly in the right direction. And Lara's model among the cubes seems to move more freely, so her movements look cool even with the first-person view patch.

    • @AxMania

      Yeah, that's a very good point. I definitely think Tomb Raider was inspired by the Prince's movement, but the transition to 3D made it so much more fluid and "free", like you said. It's definitely more polished, because Lara isn't stuck to the grid like the Prince is.

Also, you skipped the leap of faith jumps on level 3 with the off screen tile on the top right side, and with a timed gate, hardest part of the game so far. Also, you are playing version 1.0 of DOS port, since the 1.1 version, has the golden look for level 12, much nicer than the generic blue of the dungeons.

    @AxMania Yeah, maybe I should indeed just start at the original instead of Warrior Within and complete them all again, good idea!
    I get what you are saying about open-world games. They tend to be overwhelming and are becoming too large with too many things to collect and side-quests to complete. I take care to tackle them one at the time and make my gaming sessions not too long (and switch to other type of games if I need it) to prevent that feeling of being burned out by the open world. Let's hope the next AC will be more focused!
    3D is relatively similar to AoD. The controls are bad and definitely need some getting used to and the game obviously was not optimized(/fully finished) before release, but they nail the Persian setting and I like how the game looks in terms of graphics (yeah it is 1999 graphics but still). It is a great adventure, with a lot of variety in terms of levels/environments, and I like the story and voice-acting, ànd the music :) Some (parts of) levels are infuriating though (so fair warning!) [especially Streets and Docks (Level 8) and the Floating Ruins (Level 13)]. In general I like the first few levels the most (until the Rooftops, which is Level 7), while the best level is probably the last level before the finale (the Moon Temple, which is Level 16).

      Sorry for the late reply! That's a very good way to handle open-world games, and I think I should do it the same way. So good strategy! I really like the setting of AC Mirage, so I hope so!
      Reading this has made me really excited to play Prince of Persia 3D, haha! I only think I played, maybe, two levels back then? I can't remember. I skipped through a playthrough on RUclips, and there are so many levels I've never seen. I look forward to playing it now.

Some ideas and puzzles/levels are very cool, but the overall execution is rather flawed, sadly. However, personally I dig the graphics (and character models), music, (most) atmospheres, and just the overall vibe of the game :) To me, it truly felt like a step-up (only not in terms of controls and puzzles, obviously). The story is relatively basic still but at least sufficiently different compared to the first two entries - I remember being pretty surprised & impressed by it when I first played it (also in terms of the main villlain, who is pulled right out of Indian mythology if I'm not mistaken). Maybe that is a good/interesting idea for a video some day, come to think of it: a comparison between AOD and POP3D! (since these two games are similar in so many ways (imo)). Seriously, thank you for the awesome comparison of the two series. I even learned things about Tomb Raider that I didn't know. I have seriously never noticed that combat was nerfed between Legend and Anniversary, for example 😬

    I never actually beat this game, was way harder than any other pc game i play in the early 90ts... Wonder why is not in Steam, i do not want to do the Jack Sparrow to play it legit xD,
    Btw i was expecting the Eurovision Gag, but i guess is only in Videos of Tomb Raider.

      It is! I couldn't do it as a kid, but I'm more patient now than I was back then, haha! Yeah, it's annoying. You can play it in a browser, though!
      Haha, the Eurovision stuff is only for the Tomb Raider Mysteries videos, but I think I've retired those for now 😅

      I really, really hope so! I wasn't bothered by the graphics in the trailer, like most people were, so I wish they would've just released it in 2021 😅 I'm a little worried about all these delays, but I hope that means it will be good when it does arrive!

      @@AxMania tbh I hated those graphics, stylized is one thing, but out of date is another. They clearly filtered it to try to cover up the lack of polish. I have faith though since they started from scratch basically and gave it back to the original studio that made it

    well the reason PoP (prince of persia aka PoP) isn't doing anything is because the shitbirds at ubisoft hq invested far too much in assassins creed ( by investing far too much in assassins creed i mean when the devs got bored of assassins creeds cookie cutter template they could have just gone with PoP, yes i'm salty I don't live in that timeline.) and forgot that at it's core the PoP franchise is meant to have the darkness and whimsy of the 1001 Arabian nights.

    Assassins creed did evolved from prince of Persia…twice if they did turn the pop reboot set in Egypt into AC origins?
    And ironically we could see assassins creed as the inversion of tomb raider, and not only because tomb raider is good and assassins creed is bad…
    I mean as gameplay

      Haha, yeah, that's a good point. Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider and Assassin's Creed all seem somewhat related.

    Well everything was inspired by everything else, as its how culture and games formed over time, one person sets up a playbook, another thinks okay what if I do this abit differently and you gotta figure what was the major advancement in technology back then, and it was 3D sprites and technology with proper voice acting, the first of its kind outside of FMV like the kind that you would see in a tex Murphy game,
    so you take the same basic idea and do it in a new way and that is the result, granted one could say they are as similar as they are different, but the conceptual gameplay concepts are not however
    also join the club with the ubisoft thing, the guy running the place is an idiot and is sinking everything over there, as I've been waiting for a new driver game for years, and if they would just have the vision they could have stolen all of rockstars fire and carved out a very nice slice for themselves
    same thing with blood dragon, the guy who made it had vision and wanted to create his own series with the guy from the first terminator film and got laughed out of the building, and upon hearing that way back when I knew they were done for
    as the reason gaming worked as a whole was precisely BECAUSE of crazy ideas like that, hell interstate 76 came about purely because one of the mech warrior guys wanted to buy a muscle car but which one lol
    and i cant knock going for a 70 AAR Cuda in Hemi Orange with 432 on the side as the leads car, as you had Laura as your would be game as a kid, I had interstate and the interplay star trek command games.
    as I tried the demo but the controls on a keyboard were just impossible to deal with as I kept getting the multi key warning lol that beep when you try and hold too many keys at once lol
    like I still remember that demo to this day and just trying to work it and giving up,
    those two however, mouse and keys worked really well and you only needed like 5 keys to get the hang of the game, and most of the movement in starfleet command wias with the mouse, hell one must wonder how old laura croft would work with a simple conversion to a gamepad and a remaster in the same vein as Destroy All Humans
    but yet again, THQ is stupid, no wait.........

    • @AxMania
      @AxMania  Год назад

      Of course, that's true! I only suggest that Tomb Raider found inspiration in Prince of Persia, not that they are the same. It's mostly in the way the two games play I think so. They are both pretty unique compared to their peers at the time, and that's why I like to compare them.
      Aww, that's a shame about Blood Dragon. That's easily the most interesting Far Cry game ever. Thank you for sharing these stories!

    • @kavinskysmith4094
      @kavinskysmith4094 Год назад

      @@AxMania yeah i wasnt trying to infer plagiarism, just that everything was inspired by something else, or just sheerly by accident followed the same playbook
      as one could easily say that both games were inspired by Indiana jones, in the same sense as themselves given the traps in the last crusade. or they were inspired by the prince there given your examples
      its kind of one of those chicken and the egg type situations
      as its one of those dumb things that everyone always loves to do, IE state they were the first, when the first of the first was a who knows who came up with what that was probably stolen from someone else to begin with
      when the main question should be do you like it or not
      hell even in my own circles there, everyone likes to say Driver is a GTA clone when it predates it with the original driver
      which I used to play the nuts off of with the Demo back on PC
      kid, no money and a crappy computer, what can I say lol
      although I cant knock the similarities in your example however, which kinda begs the question of if you went into one of the old interviews that someone would have said they were inspired by the old prince of persia games abit.
      at which point if everyone was chill with it, no sense to use it as a knocking point
      and yeah with the blood dragon thing the biggest kicker was in the game directly after it, Ubisoft took shots at the blood dragon director who they laughed out of the building in the next game with some stupid easter egg about it
      and I'm just sitting there like, but blood dragon was good, why are you dumping on it?
      like the soundtrack alone was god tier, hell the only bad thing about the game was that Robocops gun wasnt like it was in the movies with that insanely oP burst fire mode he used lol
