I love the fact that Aang's son Bumi was found out to be an air bender the EXACT same way King Bumi confirmed Aang was Aang back in ATLA.
I was rewating ATLA and noticed this! So cool!
Have never thought about that
The irony is beautiful

And then it all changed.
This is indeed peak Korra, peak villains, massive twist to begin with, you're in for a ride
This may be controversial but imo this season is the best season of the Avatar franchise entirely!!
@@jjfam777 For me it's top 2, with Airbender's Book 3
@@jjfam777 honestly between ATLA Season 2 (Earth) and LOK Season 3 imo.
Although I also love ATLA Season 3 (Fire) and LOK Season 1 (Amon) just about as much - but I feel like The former 2 are a just little more consistent, maybe..?
@@jjfam777This too is my Avatar Hot Take
A:TLA 🤝 LoK
Book 3 is the best
Zuko in ATLA: I need to capture the AVATAR!
Zuko in LOK: The Avatar must be protected.
That’s character development for ya
Took about how many years, but yeah.
White lotus solution: Captivity since childhood, always protected .-.
Bro seeing Zaheer in the thumbnail, instantly reminded how great this season is
The running theory is that the people who got Airbending during Harmonic Convergence were not only people who were super spiritual (since the Nomads were the most spiritual nation) but also people who had Air Nomad ancestry since the Nomads were known to have children with people of every nation and some who were not masters (amd didnt have their tattoos yet) went into hiding in the Earth Kingdom during the war and the ability was slowly lost over time.
There is also a theory that Ty Lee from the original series was a descendent of an airbender because she was so naturally agile and mobile and instead of the usual Fire nation amber color eyes Ty Lee's eyes are dark brown, which you could get if you mixed the grey eyes of an air nomad with the amber eyes of a fire nation citizen!
I don’t understand the theory though since the airbenders would’ve came out of hiding once the Avatar came back and/or after the war.
@SoulWolf2852 the theory works under the assumption that the children of any Air Nomads that went into hiding didn't have the ability to Airbend since they were disconnected spiritually while in hiding (Kyoshi's mother for example was an Air Nomad who actually lost her ability to Airbend when she left the religious lifestyle) and that because the Nomads knew that they were being actively hunted and the the Fire Nation was setting traps using stolen Air Nomad items and relics, they would be suppressing and hiding any and all aspects from everyone around them out of fear. I wouldn't be surprised if the Air Acolytes were people who were decendents of these hidden Airbenders who were trying to reconnect with one of their heritages.
@@SoulWolf2852You also have to realize that it's been a hundred years since the avatar's return, and even longer if you count the at the time still healing tensions between the Fire Nation and everyone else afterward. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those bloodlines had forgotten their ancestry over the generations. And for those who did still remember, they likely either became the Air Acolytes or continued to suppress their practices out of fear that the war could potentially start back up.
Judging by how things are in Korra's time however, it looks like a majority of them may have simply forgotten their Air Nation roots.
@@SoulWolf2852 The theory is that the bending ability was lying dormant, there but not actually accessible, and Harmonic Convergence and keeping the spirit portals opened had awakened it.
Something very notable is the fact that Zaheer was isolated in the middle of the mountains, under high-strict security, with multiple armed Benders of all varieties there, *just* to serve him food; And this was *before* he became a Bender.
One can only imagine how dangerous he must have been, previously.
or he just was a smart leader and thats it. Brains can be more dangerous than violence
@@xSpyroTheDragon That’s entirely possible, & the danger he posed could take any form.
@@xSpyroTheDragon He was a highly accomplished martial artist, and we've seen skilled martial artists take down benders (think Ty Lee and the Kyoshi Warriors). But yeah, the reason why he was in supermax is his smarts, he's a genius strategist and an extremely charismatic leader, he could probably turn the guards if he had enough time to talk to them.
@@pabloc8808Ty Lee, Suki, even Jet are all non-benders with formidable martial skill that routinely puts them at or even above the level of some of the best benders. And Sokka and Hakoda, aside from being great fighters, are excellent instinctive strategists.
Now combine the highest end martial skill with that mental acumen and charisma, and you have a supremely dangerous combination...aka Zaheer.
Here is a question. Why did the white lotus guards have a key to the prison cell? They were just there to feed him. Why bring the key that could let him out? Seems like a stupid procedure.
14:11 One of my favourite moments with Korra as a character, showcasing her growth, season 1 and most of season 2 Korra would not have gently talked it out with him, she would've shouted at him to come down, and then when he blasted her with air she would've attacked him back. But here, Korra's gentle and reassuring, she stays a comfortable distance away and calmly talks him down. This is one of the reasons why Korra's my favourite character in all of ATLA and LOK.
@@piusdoe8984 A lesser show would've had Tenzin immediately say "I'm glad you were able to calmly talk him down, you've really grown, I'm proud of you"
Bit of a hot take, one of the things I prefer about this show to the previous is Korra herself. I honestly found her character arc and development more interesting and compelling than Aang's
@@ashhabimran239 100% agree, Aang starts the show as a Naïve kid, and he ends the show as a Naïve kid, Aang doesn't really grow during the show, his growth is almost always about his bending. He was legit against ending the war if it meant he had to take a life.
Also, I dunno it's just me, but that scene greatly insinuated a situation on a bridge where people try to talk someone out of suicide, or just anyone in danger on a high place and a crowd is watching
@@ashhabimran239 Oh, that's definitely what it was, but I don't think they'd have been allowed to be so blatant about it, so we got this.
Also, the thing Milo did to Bumi with the plate is the exact same as when Aang met Bumi in the og and Bumi chucks a chicken leg to expose his air bending. Aang catches it the exact same way with the airball in front of his chest. Just a cool reference to Uncle Bumi's father and the man he was named after.
Meelo, Milo is a drink originating in Australia
Their reaction to old man Zuko was a lot calmer then I thought it was gonna be
So to give a little context. Zaheer is essentially an airbender fanboy. While having no bending until this moment, he was enamored with airbenders and their culture, so he became an unofficial acolyte of sorts, studying for years before being captured for something you learn about soon ;)
Edit: Just remembered they have been long done with this show for months now so haha
Guess this is for the other fans then.
omg you're right, I never noticed that.
He's the world's most badass weeb!
Out of every avatar book, this is probably one of my most favorites, just because of the way they approach it and how different it is, plus the fight in this season go hard!!
I can't believe just how much charisma they put into Zaheer and the squad, they are so good at being incredibly interesting. I think they had the idea of an "evil airbender" during the creation of ATLA, but they were like, nope, can't do that; so it was 100% worth leaving the portal opened to make this possible
Is he really evil? Or just misunderstood?
They could've done so many better setups for airbending to return, though. The spirit portals being the cause is one of the most "I don't know, it just happened" plot points.
@@RLucas3000he’s definitely evil but had good intentions
@@b3yourself91 Korra's villains in a nutshell, can't say the same for Ozai
@vision-dz6cm Could they though?
Realistically if a once in ten thousand years spiritual event isn’t enough to justify it what would be?
Love the discussion on the "realness" of Korra's world. Especially with how there's an equivalent to the Industrial Revolution between this show and O.G. Avatar, we still see bending rooted in this world's culture in a way that is very believable. Fire benders that can use lightning work at the power plants. Metal benders form the core of the police force. Sporting events center around bending, etc.
But at the same time, technology is also allowing for non-benders to close the gap with benders in a way that was never before possible.
The writers in both shows did justice to the stories they felt needed to be told.
I'm SO GLAD you guys can differentiate the strengths of both shows without calling either one bad or worse.
Bumi had tried to air bend before. Probably quite hard, actually. Remember that scene when he was in front of Aang’s statue and apologized because he couldn’t bend, but that he tried to keep the world safe as best he could anyway. Airbending is absolutely not something he thought he’d ever be able to do.
Also, about Aang and the air scooter, he actually invented that technique. That was the move that earned him his tattoos, because air benders are deemed to have mastered the skill when they’ve either mastered all of the various training techniques passed down by the monks or they’ve become so advanced with the skill that they create something new. Aang’s invention was the zoomy ball lol.
There weren't really notable tensions between Benders and Non-Benders in A:TLA, people were more focused on national identity, like are you Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, etc.
The Fire Nation did prioritize killing and imprisoning Benders though, and clearly valued Bending powers in its royal family
There was a little tension but not as much as Korra remember the fisher man that Sokka worked for he was on Aang ass about disappearing
There’s a cool theory that all the ppl that are getting bending have air bending ancestor and due to the events in book 2 it has reawaken a dominant gene
As potentially not all air benders were at the temple as they are wonders so they went into hiding maybe married and as air-bending culture was not being practiced it kinda died out, bumi didn’t get bending but his dad was still one so with the new spiritual energy it restored as the world wants balance
Seeohknee: "wait... Are these vines from this word, from the great tree"
Season 4 of Korra: 👀😶👀
Asami continues to be amazing! Brining a futuristic airship to fly Korra around wherever she needs at the drop of a hat, teaching her how to drive, and having a much needed talk during the Drive without getting upset at Korra.
One of my favorite Avatar characters
the best of gal pals !
I love that Zuko says that together they can take down the entire world, and immediately after that, he says he is going to stop them, like he has no chill even at this age.
IMO the best season of the 4.
Zaheer is voiced by Henry Rollins
Ming-Hua is one of the most interesting characters in Avatar, i love her use of water bending without arms.
And she's voiced by Grey Delisle, the VA for Azula.
@@chilibreath ohh i had forgotten that, thanks
I can think of two things from ATLA that shows tensions between benders and non benders off the top of my head:
1. The Earth Kingdom soldiers who were harassing non benders in the town in Zuko Alone.
2. The Cabbage Merchant
Also, the whole Fire Nation War, essentially caused by benders
The families of benders were often traumatised by it, too, such as Sokka not wanting Katara to waterbend, and Haru's mother trying to get him to stop. Both their communities would have people hesitant about being near benders, just due to the risk of attracting the Fire Nation.
When seasons 3 and 4 aired online the creators were interactive with the fans.
One thing they said was Zaheer wasn’t a bender but he was a martial artist that modeled his fighting style off of airbending.
So when he got airbending he essentially got the moves and forms already down well. 😊
"I mean he's still a orphan, but yeah he's definitely a thief."
PURE COMEDY
I liked how it looked like Seeohknee was going to say/scream “let’s go” but was a bit to excited, and it just came out as “let’s…”
It makes a lot of sense that opening the portals would be what re-awakens airbendering. It's the most spiritually connected of the elements and the world has drifted farther away from their spiritual roots.
Very disappointed in you Billy for spoiling an event for Ruff.
Introducing the ultimate menace Zaheer. The fact this man was locked up that tight before he became an Airbender and proceeded to effortlessly destroy the guards after shows he is a threat. Well now at least Tenzin isn't responsible for the majority repopulation of the air nomads
My headcanon is that Bumi is genuinely terrified of Meelo and would have been grievously injured if hadn’t airbended the projectile away.
I always took it as with the connection of the spirit world basically awakened those who had the recessive gene like bumi was aangs son and got airbending the others were related to other Airbenders.
This is my favorite season. Zaheer as villain was epic
Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty and become wind
-Guru Laghima
I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention Ryu (the basement airbender) was voiced by Jon Heder, aka Napoleon Dynamite 😂
Korra actually reminds me a bit of the incredibles in the way they handle mature stuff, Not being afraid of bringing up actual issues even though it's a family friendly show.
Lava bending is a real game changer for Earth benders;
Metal benders for ore and Lava benders for forging... does anyone need others with those two for the vehicle industry...
Space shuttles are now half way to completion with 2 kinds of special Earth Benders...
Imagine the other possibilities if all the special branches were in proper numbers and use.
Finally time to get into one of the best seasons of Avatar ever
One of the best villains too
Avatar Wan was about 10,000 years ago
Oh we starting THE book
1:27 I've had arguments with people who claim that vague comments about future events don't count as spoilers, and Ruff's comment here is why I think they're wrong. People can still piece together what you're saying, you're not as clever as you think you are.
My personal headcanon is that people with Air Nomad blood are the ones who got air bending. This would go off the theory that The Lee had Air Nomad genes, but basically the theory is (since a graphic novel showed the Fire Nation bated Air Bender with relics after the attacks on the Air Temples) That a bunch NonBender Air Nomads (or Acolytes probably) survived and went into hiding, eventually breeding themselves into extinction. So this would be, most people descended of those survivors. I wouldn't be surprised if the world saw a spike in other benders at this time, but Air was the most obvious, as Air Benders were 'extinct.'
I always find it funny how cities and villages say they banish the Avatar!
It's like... TerrorRicks are attacking a village in the middle East and the US Army shows up to chase them... and then some old dude with a weird hat comes out and says You're banished for breaking our general store!
Like... what makes you think they're going to listen? You're bluffing.
First Avatar lived 10 000 years ago.
Mako the type of guy to get bullied by his ex-girlfriends.
Finally!!!! TLOK's best season!!!!
(arguably best season of all avatar series)
"I think Tommy Pickles is secretly the new Iroh"
LMFAO
Aang was a person learning to become the Avatar.
Korra is an Avatar learning to become a person.
The best season, IT'S HERE
You know it'll be the best season when one of the best characters gets airbending in the first 5 minutes.
I think Bending is part genetic part spirit. The ones developing air bending now have air benders in their ancesstry. They just didnt have access to more spirit fuel until harmonic convergence
10.000 YEARS GUYS
Portal was closed for 10,000 years in between harmonic convergences
You won't believe the collective gasp the community had when Zuko was shown. I love that he looks just like Avatar Roku since that's his great-grandfather
Time for my favorite book in the whole series along with some of the best villians in the franchise!❤️🔥
I mean, there is a reason why season 3 is amazing ^^ Zaheer and his team are great villains. The most terrifying fact is they already were when Zaheer was only a normal man. Now he has airbending. And...let's just say if people didn't took that element as serious before, now they will.
Bumi probably know some move from when he was younger but never developed air bending so it stayed like that. And he is a military man, he has training ^^
Once Zuko finally appears...
"ITS DAH DUUUUUUDE!!!"
9:24 Well, Korra WAS working with her emotional opposite when trying to Airbend.
In regards to Bumi, the genes where there, but surpressed until Harmonic Convergence.
You guys should read the comics, especially The Rift and Imbalance because the Rift has a big conflict about how machines are replacing benders in factories, and benders are losing jobs. Imbalance has a really interesting plot about non benders feeling oppressed by benders.
Wan closed the portals 10,000 years ago - it happened during the previous Harmonic Convergence, which only happens every 10,000 years.
The time between planetary alignments was 10,000 years. I'm not sure if we know for sure there was not multiple alignments between avatar Wan and Korra but it's been at least 10,000 years
5:50 I think there were less benders in ATLA. The fire nation took a lot of benders and locked them up from both the south and the earth kingdom. So benders were scarce or they were fire benders attacking and oppressing the other nations.
So it might have started back then
"I've never understood this because driving is really not difficult" - not when it's your first time with a manual gearbox. America, land of the automatics.
The assumption that just because people could airbend they'd all fall in-line with air nomad culture was the height of hubris.
I immediately thought of how annoying door to door missionaries are when I first saw this and was actually rather glad when that first guy told Tenzin to pound sand.
The lazy guy is voiced by Napoleon Dynamite, gosh!
If you’re wondering how Zaheer learned airbending so quickly, I always saw it as he taught himself all the airbending teachings and airbending as a regular fighting style (it is based on Ba Gua) he just didn’t have the actual bending to go along with all of his knowledge and skills. He was quoting a 400-year-old airbending master from memory.
This is what I love about the cameos in Legend of Korra. They make sense. They have a purpose. Katara mirroring what her grandmother said about leaving the South Pole makes complete sense. Of course, Aang would be there because Korra is dealing with some of Aang's mistakes. Why wouldn't Iroh offer guidance to another Avatar? Sokka didn't have to be the representative for the South Pole at the trial but it makes sense that he would be. They're not just thrown in there and they're not forgettable.
Oh man, the title for the first chapter is so apt. This season felt like such an upgrade from season 2 even in just the first two episodes. The biggest improvement had to go to Korra though. She’s still hot headed but she already feels so much lighter this season. My favorite scene has to be when she’s talking to the guy on the bridge. Perfection
Asami really is that friend that will hook you up, man. Best girl. Also her bonding with Korra is so great.
Awkward Mako is my favorite.
I love how it took literally one minute of the video for these guys to love this season! 😂
I love the conversation you guys have at the beginning around the 6:00 mark. Analyzing the reality of tension that can grow as a result of technological advance. We may not have benders in reality, but we sure do have automated technology that's being conditioned to eliminate the need for the manual labor it takes to complete the job.
Book 3 was Legendary so glad you guys get the see it!!!
Zuko looks like his great grandfathers, Sozin & Roku
The best part about Bumi airbending the plate is that Aang was outed the same way by Bumi in Omashu back in Book 1. Full circle
Harmonic convergence takes place once every ten thousand years, so the closing of the Spirit Portals was almost exactly ten thousand years ago.
So a cool detail I found out of zuko actually has rokus beard style and sozins uh man bud thing showing the two sides of who he is which is really cool
I know people love Zaheer but god his team is so dope with unique bending styles ghazan is my favorite and I still love how korra is so aggressive
Korra legit had some of the best, most interesting antagonists in avatar.
15.50 - the harmonic convergence happens every 10,000 year, as for how many avatars there r there's a theory that korra is #183. if u do the math the average lifespan is 55, factor in that aang n kyoshi both lived over 150, some lived even shorter.
minor spoiler if u haven't read the kyoshi books.
kurruk the water bender before kyoshi that lost his wife to ko only lived to 33
It was actually 10,000 years between harmonic convergence also the reason the air benders are back is because of harmonic convergence
Don't forget Minato, who took years to rutate it, only to end up calling it Rasengan. 09:00
This is the season where things finally start feeling tense
I have nothing solid to base my fan theory on, but I think all the new air benders have some kind of connection to air bending in their personalities. Rava closed the portal about 10,000 years ago.
Season 3 of Kora is my favorite season of any Avatar season!! Here’s my ranking of each individual season:
1. Season 3 Kora
2. Season 3 Last Airbender
3. Season 2 Last Airbender
4. Season 4 Kora (really great season)
5. Season 1 Last Airbender
6. Season 1 Kora
7. Season 2 Kora
i like to think ALL the new airbenders have some sort of air nomad lineage
Korra literally just said that the planet's energy has shifted due to Harmonic Convergence, you'd think they would've figured that's why more airbenders are popping up.
Answering your question: Wan closed the portals 10 000 years ago. Considering that we’ve seen some avatars only get to their 30’s and some get live centuries, there have probably been 100 avatars between Wan and Korra
Finally you meet my 2nd favorite character in this series Zaheer. Locked away like a final boss without being a bender means he had to be a highly skilled, intelligent fighter and just added air bending to his fighting ability. Now you have all of my top 5 characters Mako, Zaheer, Amon, Lin, and Bolin.
Aang was a peaceful avatar in a time of war, while Korra is a war-like avatar in a time of peace.
So the portal was closed during harmonic convergence which happens every 10,000 years.
I kinda wish Zuko was still voiced by Dante Basco, seeing as how aging seems to not affect his voice lmao
The reason why people have been given airbending is because during Harmonic Convergence, the event sensed how little airbenders they were and so to restore the balance that had longed been uneven, it gave people airbending. It gave birth to a new Air Nation.
Also, you have no idea what is to come next in this season.
I'm glad you guys are still enjoying The Legend of Korra so much. :)
14:50 This is where the fun begins
According to the lore or origin of the first avatar, it was wan who disrupted the balance and gave birth to the ideology of taking the lion turtles elemental power and making it as martial art, which inspired other humans to do the same for other purposes.
How I see it, the world might have been better off if there was no avatar. Its seems that every avatar that gets introduced through the cycle of reincarnation is trying to fix a mistake caused by his predecessor.
THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY'RE IN FOR IN THIS SEASON AND I'M SO EXCITED
0:20 lol and also where i stopped like 6 eps in
1:09 NO NO ASSHOLES
LIKE "spoiler for LoK"
Gets could mean a lot ig
6:00 uhh okay there was...
The twins in 1x15 who were like "I'm a bender, I'm not" and no disappointement there
Sokka saying he seems to manage (this is from his side though)
Ah! Toph is all I can remember -- early on she excluded him from the lineup? Fight?
Like "3 on 3" actually there are 4 of us Toph -- and she admitted that she didn’t count him because he was a non-bender. (He said he can still fight, and she amended to 3 on 3+Sokka). Though that was early
9:02 it's the scooter part
If it hasn't been stated yet, the waterbending villain has no arms so she uses psychic waterbending. Pretty cool right? 😁
Out of all the seasons of Korra, this one is the best.
5:10 That's... oddly meta
YOOOOO I'm all about that @Iahfy representation at 11:30. Thank so much for that! She's incredible.
It's here, Season 3!!!!
Book 3 and 4 are absolutely incredible, can't wait to see the rest of her Arc once again
Believe it or not Zuko's beard also looks like a young avatar Roku's.. He himself looks more like Roku than Iroh in my opinion.
