Nicole, I 🩵love🩵 your videos. You have a huge collection of gorgeous orchids. And, you’re never afraid to show what went wrong, which is sometimes hard to do. Good luck with this one!
I think the issue with semi-hydro for cattleyas especially is LECA turns alkaline after a while which is a bummer since cattleyas grow in acidic medium. The roots will eventually die regardless of how much they liked LECA in the beginning.
EXACTLY what I needed😉. I have 2 totally rootless orchids and I was not aware of the Ziplock bag trick! I had tried the moss in a little plastic cup but the humidity level is not high enough. So, thank you very much and, good luck😍
Thank you! I'm still waiting for the roots to push, and I see a swollen node now that I hope will keep going, it's hanging in so far, my fingers are crossed.
I just checked the 3 orchids I had put in spagnum moss in Ziplock bags after watching your video. SURPRISE ! One is dead as a doornail; one didn’t grow any roots, yet, but has a new growth😱. So, I mounted it with some spagnum moss and I will water it every day🤞🏻. The third one grew some small roots and I planted it in a small pot🤞🏻. Next challenge is to keep them alive🙏. How did yours fair?😍
I gave up on sphag and bag a while ago, my plants always rotted. I just put them in a tall open container (usually a deli cup) with some inorganic media in the bottom and I just keep water in the very bottom.
With your humidity I can definitely see that. Finally the days of hot and humid are starting to taper off here. We have it at 30% today, not bad! Let's see what happens!
I think I either read somewhere or saw online where algie create a toxic environment as a by product. Maybe that has something to do with your orchids doing fine in SH and then all of the sudden starting to decline. Those pots seemed to be full of algae. Just a thought...?
I think also it's because I wasn't flushing them enough and the pots accumulated too much salt :( Sadly this one died as well. It didn't push out new roots, it hung in there for two months but just declined from there. The algae for sure doesn't help either. Appreciate you watching! I do much better with my others, I promise :)
@NicoleDeanna I love your channel! I've learned so much from you! I really like your practical, laid-back approach to orchid care. I also really appreciate getting to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. That let's me know I'm not the only one, thank goodness! 😅 Enjoy your weekend!
rootless cattleya will most likely rot in a bag, when they are rootless they need to be dry as they cannot uptake any moisture until root tips pop out.I have over 4000 cattleya in my greenhouse and the method that works best is leaving it more dry. when I find an orchid I want to save I put it in a very small empty clay pot , no media at all.If its going to recover new roots will pop out in about 2-3 weeks. then you can put a bit of moss or repot it in an airy bark mixture.
Nicole, I wonder if it's better to put it under a dome of larger plastic Bottle (Gallon Size) with cut out holes for ventilation, instead of a suffocating touching leaves plastic bag... Hopefully it survives and thieves. Anything artificial as far as planting media is probably not good as it is not natural for air flow which any orchid roots need and the look of the old plastic around too much moisture with no air in the old potting hydro mix is just so sad and even what is left around does look unhealthy like a pond with too much heat and bad grean algae growing in (not what orchids would love which is acidic media)...
A dome would work well. The orchid is still going and I'm waiting to see if roots come in but I opened the top of the bag more so it's not suffocated and so more airflow can get in. Many folks can't use this method if they grow in a humid environment though, so I understand your concern.

That is a good point and wouldn't surprise me.
Hi Nicole. I’m wishing your orchid well. Looking forward to the updates. Thanks for sharing. 💞🥰🤗
Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️
I'm looking forward to the progress, too. I never have enough patience.
We'll see what happens! Hopefully I get some roots in two weeks in time for the next monthly update 🤞

@@NicoleDeanna thanks for the up date. No roots on mine either😫

It's still going, the method works for some people and not for others, I'll do an update to share how it goes. Thanks!
She will be good if I know someone can be successful with plants is you ❤❤❤❤
I love you Amiga, thank you ❤️❤️❤️
How long do you keep it in the bag? I’m guessing until you see new roots. Thanks for sharing
Exactly, till you see new roots, I'm still waiting but see a swollen node on it that I hope will push it through, we shall see!
Do you think that what some of these orchids are lacking could be oxygen?
In semi hydro, I think so. I think they also need to dry out in many cases😭

It’s disappointing for you to find how unhealthy this orchid became. I look forward to the updates as this kind of rescue seems to work well.
Thank you 🙏
