Clutter Park in Holcomb, Kansas… named after the brutal murder of the Clutter family in the 50s… Truman Capote wrote his famous book In Cold Blood about it. Capote and Harper Lee (To Kill A Mockingbird) spent substantial time in Holcomb researching the murders and the hunt for the killers.
I'm genuinely curious how you now feel about kansas in general, the differences between eastern and western Kansas , and how you guys were treated by the people in kansas. i usually avoid "vlog" type videos but I've really enjoyed this series as you've gone through my state. thanks for it.
It was pretty much how I expected it to be. Plenty of nice folks. Not a lot of shade and rather flat. Only a few areas where people were noticeably unfriendly like Durham. Really liked most of the small town stays and appreciated that they let people camp. Western Kansas after McPherson was a lot more desolate. East was easier in general and also had the flint hills Trail which was nice.
Yes Matt, In Cold Blood was a famous book written by Truman Capote about the horrific mass murder of an innocent family in Holcomb. God rest their souls.
The Clutter Family were murdered in their rural home outside Holcomb, Kansas. In the book 'In Cold Blood' By 'Trudy Capote' The book has been made in many movies 'IN COLD BLOOD' The two guys were both hanged in a public execution.
"In Cold Blood" is the movie that was made detailing the unfortunate experience of the Clutter Family. Not necessarily what you want your town to be famous for...
Man its weird to see people walking thru yer hometown (Lakin) from far away, bit of history on Lakin, its the Kearny County Seat, it got that title by sometime in the 70s burning down the only other candidate Hartland, if you had turned left by the Holly sight then followed the dirt road at the end of that road to a farmhouse and gone up the road/driveway that splits the property you would of seen what remains of Hartland (Which is the cementary)
Another jackrabbit! Yea. Love the sound of coyotes excited by the train. How did you survive the hiking near feedlots? Notice the increase of flies by the feedlots?
I didn’t notice any additional flies near the feedlots but that’s because in general Kansas had a ton of flies. Particularly to the mid late afternoon.
I think that town in Colorado is pronounced just like the tree name Holly, unless there is one named Holey. Used to be a principal out in that southwest Kansas country. Lots of empty miles, man.
jackrabbits short trains and lots of cows, at least no corn, the sunflowers were pretty and lots of subway. and coyotes, we have them around here but they are subdued.
Taters vs the Corn. My money is on Taters! Veggie hungry will do in a corn cob in a heartbeat! Good miles today thanks to the "endurable", if problematic, heat. Hike on! Tortoise
Like I mentioned apparently it was the case of some presumably mentally ill person did something that made the church no longer offer it. Which I can understand
I'm curious how often you're asked for you ID when you get confronted by the cops, and you show it, or tell them no thanks? I find it a little troubling how often you're confronted when you aren't doing anything wrong
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes good deal.....I ask because sometimes I come across some of those videos where the cops are unlawfully trying to get ID from people. Just curious how you handle it being out in the middle of nowhere, and seemingly having to deal with it quite a bit. I like watching your videos every morning. It's pretty cool seeing things countryside and small towns from your POV
@bassfan41 in general, I am not the sort of person to be obnoxious. I find I get a lot further by being friendly and engaging people and talking enthusiastically about what I am doing. If they did want to see my ID, I would probably just show it to them in the name of, not wanting to getting hassled. It is like arguing with the TSA, even if you are in the right they can make your day rather unpleasant.

Good for Jenn for being such a great example of vegetarianism! Healthy, active, and good-natured even when hiking through hell. 😁 and I love Kansas!
5:15 I see that you discovered a jackalope.
Thanks for the coyote calls! I love listening to them too.
Thanks, Matt you know that Subway doesn’t have nachos. ✌🏻👊🏼
I have enjoyed these ....seeing a lot of the back roads I've traveled. Thanks

I hope the cold front has pushed through by the time you read this and you are enjoying milder weather. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
We have been trying to take advantage of the colder weather to get as close to the mountains as humanly possible before it warms up again
Thanks, safe journeys. ✌🏻👊🏼

Kittens, popo, corn, snakes, sunflowers, mule (?) and hobo Matt - oh my!
"In Cold Blood" is the movie that was made detailing the unfortunate experience of the Clutter Family. Not necessarily what you want your town to be famous for...
I mean, it could be worse. They could be Huntington Beach…
You two are doing a fantastic job keep up the great work

Hilarious about guy wanting to give u change Matt😂
I did have that happen in the Florida panhandle, but I had a much bigger beard then. And he was trying to give me more than $.12 then
😂😂😂

Yea. One of my map notes had a mistake and said “Holy” Realized that the next day
Hey Y'all. So it seems you have seen all the exciting bits of Kansas. The walking past the feedlots must have been... Yeah.
Fortunately, due to the Highwinds, we weren’t stuck, smelling the worst of the feedlot
What an adventure stay safe
Oh yeah, those feed lots are olfactory overload.
olfactory farming
Day 122 watch. Napping on couch. Hike faster…

Several different time zones
Doesn’t Taters know she can order any ‘meat’ sandwich at Subway since it’s mostly soy?
It appears "Lake" Mckinney has fallen victim to the destruction of the Ogalala Aquifer....brutal....
Sorry to hear the church in Syracuse turned you two down. I thought only the nuns rejected you.
Like I mentioned apparently it was the case of some presumably mentally ill person did something that made the church no longer offer it. Which I can understand
But is it as humid as other parts of Kansas?
Certainly less humid that out east
You’d think Taters would like corn as a vegetarian.
I don’t think she would like field corn that is mostly fed to animals to fatten them up for slaughter!
😎✌
ar KAN zes River. Come on now! Enjoying every minute of your trek, though, pronunciations aside.
I was obviously referring to the part of the river in Colorado where proper pronunciation is restored… :)
The snake looked like a corn snake they eat rodents ,eastern Kansas lows is 61 really nice .
It was a Bull Snake, very common in western Kansas.

I have yet to be asked to show my ID. They are just stopping to make sure everything is OK.

They actually do have some sort of a nacho chicken sub now. They keep trying to guilt taters into ordering it but alas.
