Such an extraordinarily balanced ensemble whose deep love of their individual instrument sound, and how to meld it into a whole, doesn't come along often. Twenty-five minutes of channeling Brahms. Thank you.

A passionate, sensitive, and extraordinary performance by three gifted musicians. Frost's haunting, beautiful tone and his subtlety are akin to a master class in clarinet greatness.

      ABSOLUTELY!!!
I had a clarinet/sax studio for forty years.
My son attended a concert of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra with his UW-EAU CLAIRE clarinet studio and arranged to meet Mr. Frost (O with an "umlaut") after the concert and got to have a group photo taken with him AND receive an autographed concert ticket.

There are simply so many subtle touches that this particular trio makes. The only account I can articulate at the moment is that tender resolution by the clarinet during that embellished variant of the opening material [4:45-4:55]. Strikes my heart every time!

@@mpatcas I agree 100 percent. What disturbs me is that reputedly Brahms preferred the trio. The quintet, for me, is one of the handful of greatest chamber works. I'd love to hear Brahms explain his thinking.

Found this video from 'Classical Music' group chat that was shared on MeWe network.
As I listen to this, I am mindful of the masterful playing of the trio.
This is amazing -- the beginning clarinet solo is wonderful, and being an amateur clarinetist and pianist myself, I am enjoying listening to this (and should be a great piece to wind-down the day with).
Brahms was a genius, and thanks for putting this here.

This trio does not equal the quintet with clarinet op. 115, but it is quite typical of the autumnal colors of the late production of Brahms. It is a very sensitive piece.

I hope my clarinet playing can attempt to match what is so fulfilling in this presentation. Keep playing and sharing with the rest of us, as it does help and inspire us to seek higher ground. trio sublime ,, le clarinettiste joue prodigieusement d'un instrument qui fût si cher à la création intimiste de brahms ,, le pianiste paraît talentueux et l'ensemble nous propose une version fabuleuse dans la lignée des morceaux de musique de chambre du maître de hambourg ,, que de romances ,, on peut y voir les lumières pâles de la mer du nord qu'affectionnait tant le jeune yohannes quand il jouait des nuits entières dans les cabarets enfumés du port de hambourg , aux cris des marins ivres des relents de bière âcres des parfums puants dont abusaient les filles de joie railleuses ,, c est dans ce cadre étrange que naquit l'immense génie de brahms , pour notre plus grand plaisir ,, comme on aurait aimé qu'il composât plus mais chacun des ses opus exige tant travail d'intuition de maîtrise musicale pour finalement accéder aux sphères rares du génie ,, merci pour le partage ,,

Superb. Even though I'm a clarinetist, I particularly love the way Hagen varies his bow position, toward the bridge for more resonance and toward the fingerboard for less. As always, there's the vibrato problem, which the cello does easily and the clarinet does only with difficulty. I particularly wish that Hagen wouldn't vibrate on apoggiatura and suspension resolutions, but maybe that's just me. At any rate, this is the only version that equals the old Kell recording.

Are you kidding!? The cellist has amazing dynamic and chamber music skills! He doesn't break the continuous line of music ever, and plays very sympathetically towards the others. I'm sure that's why Frost picked him in the first place, for his amazing palette of dynamic and shading. They all blend tremendously well!
