Not even mistreat, they don't respect the boundaries and then they wonder why their cat is aggressive etc. The most common one I see is trying to pet their cat without it's permission. I've never touched my cat if she doesn't want me to. Guess what? No aggression and she trusts me and she's super calm around me.

Edit: same goes with small dogs. Those poor little babies get abused so often. Chihuahuas aren’t inherently aggressive, they’re just scared because their space is invaded and you’re 50x their size.

Nice generalization but I’ve dealt with some crazy cats. You could just be sitting there and you’d get pounced on. I like both cats and dogs but I’m not dense enough to not realize that both animals have nice personalities and some that’s not so nice.

My cat loves winding me up so honestly she would probably invite one to the window just to mess with me. Just like she doesn't eat my houseplants but will totally pluck a leaf or two off right in front of me if I'm too busy to pet her. 😂
Yep. My cat follows me around like my shadow and has NEVER harmed me. But I also don’t hurt him. I don’t pick him up if he doesn’t want it. I respect his autonomy and he respects mine. It’s not that complicated when you treat you animals with respect.
I only pet my cat if she accepts it. She does play bite/scratch, but it really doesn't seem malicious and is very gentle. If she does it I leave her alone.
You are very lucky. It's not the reality for a good amount of owners to be able to only handle their cats and only do things they are on board with all the time. And while I agree we should do our best to stay within our cats boundaries, what happens when you have to do things he's not in the mood for?
you are really lucky. mines are too different from one to another. the cat who is more attached to me follows me and calls me when I'm far from her (aka in other room), that's included the toilets or bathroom. i don't have any privacy with her 😂. but others are just totally ignoring me, even if they were kitten rescue that I bottle fed and who sucks my inner lips for conmfort many times a day and at night when he was still a baby. now I can't even touch him without him going grumpy, just to bring him to his wet food. yes he is so ungrateful, he is a bastard, but I don't mind, at least he is healthy, alive and happy now. love should not be waiting for, if so, don't adopt or rescue them. they are independent and true-to-themselves beforehands. sometimes you get lucky and the cat loves you back, sometimes not. this is life and we all know life isn't fair. treat everyone with love and respect, even if they didn't care, at least you could be proud of you for the love that you have to give no matter what. ❤
That last part is what people struggle with. They want respect but won't give it first, then they'll complain! And they do the same for both humans and animals.
the people that say this type of stuff are one of two things 1. long time dog owners that adopted one stray cat and tried to train them like a dog 2. tried to approach a friend's cat and didn't pass the vibe check
The bas part is, you CAN train cats the exact same way as dogs. Ive done it. My 12 year old kitty is loving proof. They just take longer, more patience, and have boundaries that requires an earned trust and love before anything. Dogs you dont have to earn their love and trust unless they have been horribly mishandled in the past, and even then they warm up faster. Dogs offer immediate boot licking unconditional love and thats what most people adore about them. You dont have to work for their love, you have to work for them to behave well. With cats its the exact opposite usually and thats what leads to the ignorant stigma from dog lovers.

Thats still not cats respecting peoples boundries cuz. I have friends who own cats. They are very wonderful to them. Spent thousands on toys for them. Gentle correcting when they do something bad. Lots of playtime. They dont get pets unless the pets are solicited from the cats...... and two of them are just jerks. My husband has a cat. Everyone I know that knew the cat was constantly telling me that he was a mean cat. First time I went over to my husband's house (just friends at that point), I took a seat and he came right up to me and started to sniff me. He then got in my lap and cuddled with me for hours. While me and him chilled and played games together. I have only been "attacked" once by him. He had gotten outside, our neighbors dogs were barking at him and I grabbed him while he wasn't paying attention to me getting him in the house. He balled up on my arm just long enough to bite and then realized he just attacked me. I got him in the house and let him go. He ran off and then like 20 minutes later slinked up to me as if to say he was sorry. I got him in my lap and pet on him. While I was pregnant with me and my husband's son he was my shadow. I wasn't even allowed in the bathroom without him. If I did go without him he would yell at the door. Or if I left it cracked he would SLAM the door open and then just strut in. He was by my side constantly. My husband about 2 years ago blamed me for "unattacking his attack cat". All of his friends who held the cat at arms length were able to hold him and love on him without "fear of being attacked". My husband's mother is a different story. The cat doesn't like his mother. One morning I woke up to her screaming bloody redrum and I jump out of bed and rush into the living room where the cat was soaking wet and my MIL was on the floor clutching her bloody leg. She has very skinny legs and he had bit right around her skin bone. I got my husband up and asked him to check on the cat while I helped his mom. As I was helping her clean the bite I asked what had happened. She had opened the front door so he could look out the glass door. He saw another cat and started growling at it. She bumped him with her foot and he latched onto her leg. I flat out told her that was her own fault she got attacked she should have either slowly close the door or gotten a long range thing (spray bottle) to get him away from the door, but in his eyes, she attacked him first and attacked so he wouldn't be hurt. My husband came a couple minutes later and started yelling at his mom about his cat smelling like coffee. So there's a reason the cats mean to her

We have a male cat. He wasnt used to us and hated being near us(he never scratched,just ran) He is now very cuddly and will sometimes follow u. Never scratches unless ur playing with him and he accidentally scratches u

Exactly. I've met and had loads of cats. I've only been scratched by 2 cats. 1 was a stray and that I tried to help and the other is my current orange cat. He's afraid of cats and the car was pulling in while I was holding him and he was trying to get away and scratched my arm once and ran away when I put him on the floor. When he realised he scratched me (not enough to draw blood) he sat on my lap and tried to lick it better and sat w me constantly for 5 hours straight
Adopted a stray starving cat, named him Mac. He was really sick and I thought I’d offer him a warm place and some good food for his final days. Didn’t think he’d make it. He survived and thought the indoor life suited him quite fine. Now he cuddles up next to me and my dog and screams at 1 AM for food. Wouldn’t trade him for the world EDIT: Wow, didn’t expect all the likes! Y’all are so sweet. Mac is about 4 years old now and is still living his best life. His best friend is my dog, Hank, who is also a rescue. Hank will lay down on the couch and Mac will lay in the circle he makes with his body. He is afraid of birds, people, and other cats. He gets wet food in the evenings (he doesn’t keep weight on very well so I have to make sure he eats). I am usually against letting domestic cats freeroam outside, but since he doesn’t attack other animals and stays relatively close to the house, he comes in and out as he pleases. At night, he harasses my dog until Hank licks his head, like he’s asking for goodnight kisses, and then curls up next to me and goes to sleep. Cats are truly beautiful and complex creatures that many people dismiss as unsympathetic and cruel. Mac is proof that that couldn’t be further from the truth :)

Cats’ body language is a bit harder for humans to interpret. I see people CONSTANTLY pushing their cats’ boundaries without realizing it, and getting scratched because of it. Cats’ temperament also depends on how they’re raised.

Depends on the cat! I love my calico but she is a biter & scratcher(hell as a kitten) she needed siblings to teach her better behavior but I got her at about 10 weeks old. So she did not have good knowledge of how to behave. Plus she is more of an assertive cat. She is getting better with age. But was hell as a kitten! But I love her ' meanies!' And all.😊

I think people just don’t realize that cats are completely different from dogs and will treat their cats as they would a dog. Very little personal space, no regard for boundaries, and rough play. Cats are some of the most reliable and loving animal companions you can own if you just know how to act around them
And here's the thing, not all dogs are like that. Many small dogs are now stereotyped as being aggressive due to constantly having their agency taken and being so small. I had a Chihuahua for over a decade and treated her like a cat. She'd let us know if she needed attention and she was happy. She lived to 17
Truth! Cats AND dogs also need space and alone time. You can't harrass and force yourself upon them. Especially with cats, you should let them come to you. It's been 9 yrs since I've had a cat but my doggo, who was with me for 14 yrs, passed almost 4 months ago. When he wanted to have time alone, Hubs and I let him. He would come to us when he wanted attention and we gave it to him. They aren't toys.

We’ve always treated her the same as the big dogs and given her the proper boundaries and she turned out a healthy functional little dog. I think moreso my point is that people tend to treat cats and other small animals like toys and violate their boundaries because they’re small and unable to do any real damage if they retaliate. We take bigger animals like dogs and horses and such more seriously because they can and will seriously harm us if we push them too far. It’s a gross mindset too many people have and it needs to change.
I got a cat for the first time about a year ago and she attacked me a couple of times. She was still pretty young. I walked by and she just, unprompted, latched onto my leg for a split second and when I yelled and turned around she sat there like “what? Did you hear something??” She’s stopped doing that now that she’s a bit older but it was honestly funny. Like girl what did I do to you???
it depends on the cat and their boundaries really. i have a little kitten that likes to latch on my leg and climb up on me because shes still trying to learn how to use her claws :3 The important part is body language, cats arent humans and show their love and discomfort differently. You could've been getting love bites or being used as a scratching post, unless it really seemed like she was attacking you fiercly then that's a different story 😅
it's possible she was trying to play, but hadn't had enough socialisation to know when play became hurt. but then she learned from you, that she was hurting you, so she stopped.
Same 😂 My friend, who is afraid of cats, came over for the first time and met mine… it did not go well. In my cat’s defense, she is territorial so I should’ve made sure my friend stayed in the living room for a while to ease my cat into her presence but let’s just say… my friend’s fear has been more solidified 😭 I promise she’s a sweet little Angel most of the time! My grandmother has a cat that is physically attached to me. If i say his name, oh look, there he is, racing down the hallway. I have even given that cat belly rubs, along with her other cat they dont scratch. The female even rolls over to have belly rubs. And they were both stranded alone.
My cat just the nicest me and I don’t know why. A kid guest was abusing him but instead of bite back, he somehow understood it’s just a toddler and ran away the whole time.
In general stray cats and street cats which are rescued are more appreciative and loving. I adopted my cat off of a friend whose house cat had a litter, and she is a killing machine... The first three years of her life were spent attached to my feet with teeth and claws. Now that she's older (12 years old) she's become less aggressive and more affectionate, but one of her forms of affection is still prowling around until she catches you off guard and pounces on your foot for a little love bite.
People only think cats are mean because they don't recognise that cats are stealth predators. They are very sensitive to feeling exposed. You've clearly made her feel very safe and secure!

She’s definitely a dog in a cat’s body and fiercely protective like a momma over her kittens. 4yo is the epitome of *cat* 110%. Still loving as hell. 3yo is exactly like the 15yo just add a little more *parkour!* plus fetch and there ya have it

The family cat only scratches me if I violate her boundaries. If she's not in the mood for pets she'll give me a warning smack. The only times I will keep going after she's shown displeasure is if it's absolutely necessary (sorry baby girl but nail trims and vet visits are important to keeping you healthy!)

My partner used to breed huskies. He had eight. When we got our first kitty in covid he was shocked. We have 8 now. I know, I’m a crazy cat lady but five were rescued from our street. My partner says he will never go back to dogs. He’s amazed by the kitties

@VOlDNOVA Oh, I thought they were undercover sirens. I had a cross one, but I don't know what she was crossed with. She was a bit smaller, had dark brown eyes, and never howled. But she was very intelligent and stubborn and she had a snow nose.
to be fair, huskies are a REALLY difficult dog breed. they’re really stubborn even more so than my cat, and she is quite mischievous. single kitten syndrome has her a little wonky with socializing she is a difficult cat to read but shes not super troublesome. i think they’re both great just depends on the pet, but i could never handle a husky.
There are plenty of wholesome cats that bite their owners and are just misunderstood. Plenty of cats give their owners love bites that are misconstrued as aggressive warning bites. But in reality they do this with other cats all the time, it's a quick gentle bite that's meant as a sign of affection, but lots of people assume it's a bad thing and discourage this behavior. :(
Totally agree, I have the sweetest girl and she absolutely gives me love bites and play bites, for her it's just another form of communication. She's very good about not biting hard because she just wants to play/talk, not hurt, and she only ever bites her favorite people because she knows she can get away with it by being cute.
Most cats are aggresive and are allowed to be that way, cats one of the few species of animals that actively seek to cause pain and fear purely for pleasure and entertainment not just food, by instinct. Its rare for cats to be this docile most cats will do everything people claim they do, scratch claw bite attack and even then a good number of them will lash out by instinct even when they arnt being aggressive, because thats generally how they communicate with each other. This dudes cat is the anomaly not the normal cat.

If they're playing, they do bite but its playful and they lick you afterwards as if they're saying "sorry, I was just playing" so no, cats do not ENJOY causing pain and fear and if you treat them right they will love you like this guy that's treating his cat right.
The only time I’ve been bitten by a cat was one angry and introverted cat, I was young and messing with my pregnant cat Molly and I’ve been bitten when cats mistake my finger for food.
The only reason my cats have ever scratched or bit me is when I was playing with them and they got a little too excited. They've never intentionally hurt me, it's always been an accidental scratch. And whenever it happens, I can see that they're worried. They always get this look when I pull away from them, like "oh, did I do something wrong?" Cats are such kind, empathetic creatures. They deserve more respect than people give them.
My cat likes to wrestle with my hands and ankles sometimes and I've "trained" her to be less aggressive in her playtime. I use the word "gentle" when she starts getting too rough
PREACH! I have 5 at home rn, at some point they were 13. They all let me hold them however I want, purr and cuddle all the time, love belly rubs, and none of them ever scratched me on purpose. It just depends on the way you treat them.

I was told as a child that dogs keep away evil people and cats keep away evil spirits. I’ve had one of each since and they can get along great.💛

the people that say this type of stuff are one of two things
1. long time dog owners that adopted one stray cat and tried to train them like a dog
2. tried to approach a friend's cat and didn't pass the vibe check
The bas part is, you CAN train cats the exact same way as dogs. Ive done it. My 12 year old kitty is loving proof. They just take longer, more patience, and have boundaries that requires an earned trust and love before anything. Dogs you dont have to earn their love and trust unless they have been horribly mishandled in the past, and even then they warm up faster. Dogs offer immediate boot licking unconditional love and thats what most people adore about them. You dont have to work for their love, you have to work for them to behave well. With cats its the exact opposite usually and thats what leads to the ignorant stigma from dog lovers.

My husband has a cat. Everyone I know that knew the cat was constantly telling me that he was a mean cat. First time I went over to my husband's house (just friends at that point), I took a seat and he came right up to me and started to sniff me. He then got in my lap and cuddled with me for hours. While me and him chilled and played games together. I have only been "attacked" once by him. He had gotten outside, our neighbors dogs were barking at him and I grabbed him while he wasn't paying attention to me getting him in the house. He balled up on my arm just long enough to bite and then realized he just attacked me. I got him in the house and let him go. He ran off and then like 20 minutes later slinked up to me as if to say he was sorry. I got him in my lap and pet on him. While I was pregnant with me and my husband's son he was my shadow. I wasn't even allowed in the bathroom without him. If I did go without him he would yell at the door. Or if I left it cracked he would SLAM the door open and then just strut in. He was by my side constantly. My husband about 2 years ago blamed me for "unattacking his attack cat". All of his friends who held the cat at arms length were able to hold him and love on him without "fear of being attacked".
My husband's mother is a different story. The cat doesn't like his mother. One morning I woke up to her screaming bloody redrum and I jump out of bed and rush into the living room where the cat was soaking wet and my MIL was on the floor clutching her bloody leg. She has very skinny legs and he had bit right around her skin bone. I got my husband up and asked him to check on the cat while I helped his mom. As I was helping her clean the bite I asked what had happened. She had opened the front door so he could look out the glass door. He saw another cat and started growling at it. She bumped him with her foot and he latched onto her leg. I flat out told her that was her own fault she got attacked she should have either slowly close the door or gotten a long range thing (spray bottle) to get him away from the door, but in his eyes, she attacked him first and attacked so he wouldn't be hurt. My husband came a couple minutes later and started yelling at his mom about his cat smelling like coffee. So there's a reason the cats mean to her
If anyone ever threw coffee on my baby they'd never be allowed near me or my cat again

He's afraid of cats and the car was pulling in while I was holding him and he was trying to get away and scratched my arm once and ran away when I put him on the floor. When he realised he scratched me (not enough to draw blood) he sat on my lap and tried to lick it better and sat w me constantly for 5 hours straight

Adopted a stray starving cat, named him Mac. He was really sick and I thought I’d offer him a warm place and some good food for his final days. Didn’t think he’d make it.
He survived and thought the indoor life suited him quite fine. Now he cuddles up next to me and my dog and screams at 1 AM for food. Wouldn’t trade him for the world
EDIT: Wow, didn’t expect all the likes! Y’all are so sweet. Mac is about 4 years old now and is still living his best life. His best friend is my dog, Hank, who is also a rescue. Hank will lay down on the couch and Mac will lay in the circle he makes with his body.
He is afraid of birds, people, and other cats. He gets wet food in the evenings (he doesn’t keep weight on very well so I have to make sure he eats). I am usually against letting domestic cats freeroam outside, but since he doesn’t attack other animals and stays relatively close to the house, he comes in and out as he pleases. At night, he harasses my dog until Hank licks his head, like he’s asking for goodnight kisses, and then curls up next to me and goes to sleep.
Cats are truly beautiful and complex creatures that many people dismiss as unsympathetic and cruel. Mac is proof that that couldn’t be further from the truth :)

Cats’ body language is a bit harder for humans to interpret. I see people CONSTANTLY pushing their cats’ boundaries without realizing it, and getting scratched because of it. Cats’ temperament also depends on how they’re raised.

My Sister in Laws mother force cuddled my father in Laws cat and got bitten hard even if the cat did this at random (I mean I get why the cat bit her) my father in law wouldn’t have to worry about losing his cat

I think people just don’t realize that cats are completely different from dogs and will treat their cats as they would a dog. Very little personal space, no regard for boundaries, and rough play. Cats are some of the most reliable and loving animal companions you can own if you just know how to act around them
And here's the thing, not all dogs are like that. Many small dogs are now stereotyped as being aggressive due to constantly having their agency taken and being so small.

Truth! Cats AND dogs also need space and alone time. You can't harrass and force yourself upon them. Especially with cats, you should let them come to you. It's been 9 yrs since I've had a cat but my doggo, who was with me for 14 yrs, passed almost 4 months ago. When he wanted to have time alone, Hubs and I let him. He would come to us when he wanted attention and we gave it to him. They aren't toys.

We’ve always treated her the same as the big dogs and given her the proper boundaries and she turned out a healthy functional little dog. I think moreso my point is that people tend to treat cats and other small animals like toys and violate their boundaries because they’re small and unable to do any real damage if they retaliate. We take bigger animals like dogs and horses and such more seriously because they can and will seriously harm us if we push them too far. It’s a gross mindset too many people have and it needs to change.

The important part is body language, cats arent humans and show their love and discomfort differently. You could've been getting love bites or being used as a scratching post, unless it really seemed like she was attacking you fiercly then that's a different story 😅

My grandmother has a cat that is physically attached to me. If i say his name, oh look, there he is, racing down the hallway. I have even given that cat belly rubs, along with her other cat they dont scratch. The female even rolls over to have belly rubs. And they were both stranded alone.
My cat just the nicest me and I don’t know why. A kid guest was abusing him but instead of bite back, he somehow understood it’s just a toddler and ran away the whole time.
In general stray cats and street cats which are rescued are more appreciative and loving. I adopted my cat off of a friend whose house cat had a litter, and she is a killing machine... The first three years of her life were spent attached to my feet with teeth and claws.
Now that she's older (12 years old) she's become less aggressive and more affectionate, but one of her forms of affection is still prowling around until she catches you off guard and pounces on your foot for a little love bite.

The family cat only scratches me if I violate her boundaries. If she's not in the mood for pets she'll give me a warning smack. The only times I will keep going after she's shown displeasure is if it's absolutely necessary (sorry baby girl but nail trims and vet visits are important to keeping you healthy!)

to be fair, huskies are a REALLY difficult dog breed. they’re really stubborn even more so than my cat, and she is quite mischievous. single kitten syndrome has her a little wonky with socializing she is a difficult cat to read but shes not super troublesome. i think they’re both great just depends on the pet, but i could never handle a husky.

There are plenty of wholesome cats that bite their owners and are just misunderstood. Plenty of cats give their owners love bites that are misconstrued as aggressive warning bites. But in reality they do this with other cats all the time, it's a quick gentle bite that's meant as a sign of affection, but lots of people assume it's a bad thing and discourage this behavior. :(
Totally agree, I have the sweetest girl and she absolutely gives me love bites and play bites, for her it's just another form of communication. She's very good about not biting hard because she just wants to play/talk, not hurt, and she only ever bites her favorite people because she knows she can get away with it by being cute.

Most cats are aggresive and are allowed to be that way, cats one of the few species of animals that actively seek to cause pain and fear purely for pleasure and entertainment not just food, by instinct. Its rare for cats to be this docile most cats will do everything people claim they do, scratch claw bite attack and even then a good number of them will lash out by instinct even when they arnt being aggressive, because thats generally how they communicate with each other. This dudes cat is the anomaly not the normal cat.

@@Redmeer411 Most cats are passive. They only scratch, bite and/or claw when they feel threatened. If they're playing, they do bite but its playful and they lick you afterwards as if they're saying "sorry, I was just playing" so no, cats do not ENJOY causing pain and fear and if you treat them right they will love you like this guy that's treating his cat right.

The only time I’ve been bitten by a cat was one angry and introverted cat, I was young and messing with my pregnant cat Molly and I’ve been bitten when cats mistake my finger for food.
I couldn’t hear the purring because my dog is snoring next to me😂
The only reason my cats have ever scratched or bit me is when I was playing with them and they got a little too excited. They've never intentionally hurt me, it's always been an accidental scratch. And whenever it happens, I can see that they're worried. They always get this look when I pull away from them, like "oh, did I do something wrong?" Cats are such kind, empathetic creatures. They deserve more respect than people give them.
Yes my cat sometimes goes into some weird "mode" and tries to scratch me when i put my hand close to it

My cat likes to wrestle with my hands and ankles sometimes and I've "trained" her to be less aggressive in her playtime. I use the word "gentle" when she starts getting too rough

I have 5 at home rn, at some point they were 13. They all let me hold them however I want, purr and cuddle all the time, love belly rubs, and none of them ever scratched me on purpose. It just depends on the way you treat them.
