One of the reasons I love listening to you both (and value your opinions even when I disagree) is that you have the humility as professional film critics to flat out just say I DIDN'T GET IT IT CONFUSED ME, instead of trying to imbibe some pseudo-intellectual hubbub jargon just to save face. That adds a huge level of credibility that so many film critics I follow, or once followed, do not have :)

The mythology is convoluted but by being so obtuse it actually creates a great environment for the ending themes. The two competing forces twisting Gretchen into this nightmare wind up facing only eachother while Gretchen brushes the whole thing off to save her sister. In the end I don’t think it matters much what crazy junk is going on, just that it drives change in the protagonist.

    Spoilers:
This movie lost me at the mid way point. I was unsure if this was supposed to be camp because Dan Stevens character is acting overtly sinister and the parents are either cartoonishly dumb or evil?
The cop subplot was weird and adding more lore than was needed.
Dan Stevens exposition dumps do not solve that this film is convoluted. The creature, it’s origins, and purpose in relation to Gretchen were confusing. Dan Stevens purpose about pro creation in a honey moon suite were confusing.
Beautiful film with some tense moments but I feel like so many film makers are leaning on horror because it’ll get green lit when they shouldn’t be making these movies. This probably should have been a psychological drama without a sci element.

Stylistically transgressive sophomore offering that channels the best of the 80’s Central European Arthouse-horror tradition. Tilman Singer deliciously seeks to exorcise the historical sins of the Fatherland, subverting “traditional” takes on patriarchal nationalism, eugenics, and Nazi family values. Queer, stylish, and unapologetically fun- the third act feels like the surrogate child of Cronenberg and Michael Mann by way of Andrzej Żuławski. Hunter Schafer is FUCKING TRANSCENDENT…welcome to the genre, Jules.

I had a lot of fun with it. Lots of style and tension and plain old weirdness. The cast was very good. I didn't really have a problem with the plot, but maybe that's because I was forewarned and was probably paying closer attention. The guy who plays the Dad always plays a bad guy or someone untrustworthy. It's at the point where I'm not sure I'd believe hin in a nice guy role. In certain shots Hunter Schafer reminded me of Mila Jovovich, especially aroung the eyes.
