Saw this movie w/ my daughter last nite..
LOL.. “something is not right” is an understatement. We both left trying to put the disjointed puzzle pieces together. We liked the cinematic effects, the music was right up my alley, the sound effects were perfectly creepy, and there was some humor mixed in with the scary moments. I felt that too much stuff didn’t make sense. Like what’s up with all of the throwing up, even Gretchen threw up. Too many unanswered questions. Probably because of the editing. I left mentally exhausted trying to keep up with everything that was being thrown at us. Favorite scary scene.. the bike ride on the bike thru the woods… yikes! Nothing like a creepy hooded blond woman in a trench coat & sunglasses running after you in the dark woods 😳
All in all, I liked this film.

Lmaooo the French lesbian to the rescue 😂
I loved it. It wasn’t perfect, but I loved it. New favorite horror film of the year. I think it should be seen in theaters because of certain cinematic techniques, specifically sound that made the whole theater feel like we were caught in an earthquake. I think it did the Longlegs concept better, particularly when it comes to makeup and fear of the creature, Longlegs feels similar to this creature but I found Longlegs to be silly not scary, as did my theater which was cracking up every time Cage was on screen. No laughs from my theater at this one, and I think it’s bc the technical execution was better, it felt grounded and didn’t rely upon the tropiest trope of satanic worship. This felt real enough to believe and I appreciated the explanation wasn’t just the devil. It felt fresh, sinister and unexpected, unlike Longlegs where I saw the ending coming from minute 5. Longlegs felt like Mrs. Doubtfire w a mental disorder and a penchant for Satan. I think it also tackled family trauma in a much more visceral and deep way. The family dynamic and their treatment of Hunter’s character felt true to life and just as horrifying as the actual horror. This is the only movie of the year that managed to actually scare me, I think there are plenty of scares and this is unambiguously a horror thriller. Hunter and Dan were great, so were the supporting characters. The creature was complex as a character, even sympathetic, and as a metaphor for femininity under patriarchy. The way the father favors the new child and wife, who very much fit the heteronormative cis feminine ideal, even when it’s clear Hunter is in physical danger, really struck a chord for me and the director doesn’t shy away from the emotional brutality of abandonment and loss. Hunter’s performances in these scenes are Oscar-worthy. I think it was close to a perfect film from act 1-2 but it failed to stick the landing. They don’t explain (or at least my partner and I both missed this) what happens to several key characters which creates some logic issues. It also does feel like a bit too much exposition right at the end, I wish they threaded in more of the explanation in pieces instead of just dumping it. There is also one scene in particular involving a sort of shoot off that did feel slightly too campy - I think there are a couple of moments like this where the tone goes a bit too campy and while I love camp, 95% of the movie feels serious and grounded, so the camp elements feel accidental or perhaps lacking in the right execution. I also want to applaud the cinematography for giving us fresh aesthetics- somehow it makes white and beige interiors with fluorescent lighting look beautiful and evil. The visual style felt restrained yet dreamy and luxurious, and the camera techniques are also novel and really additive to the horror. Overall, I can forgive the sins of the ending bc this was my most satisfying horror film of the year, and unlike Longlegs, I felt this film had a lot more to say. I’d give it a 4/5 only because the ending didn’t deliver on all the greatness leading up to it. WATCH ITTTT!

Also it's implied (and im not sure if I'm remembering right) when the father sells the house that he's acting as custodian for her and put it in an investment account for her. This director likes to use alternative editing styles (like in his LUZ where people are re-enacting a car accident and they occupy the present police station and past taxi cab). More narratively speaking...I don't know, but I like it. I like how some of the characters realize it but cannot escape the cuckoo siren song, like a bad dream loop that traps them. I'm guessing Resort Alpschatten isn't as technologically advanced as to have invented time travel.

I have to check and see if you have an Infinity Pool review. Both of these movies are set amongst beautiful scenery, meanwhile the experimentation and horrification of domestic roles lurks beneath.
I love the last scene with the men holding guns at each other on the opposite side of the aisle (literally and figuratively) while the girls hug each other to safely.
I've seen Tilman Singer's LUZ (which I can appreciate in hindsight as a thesis film) but am grateful for the relatively solid narrative this time around.

Nobody is mentioning the absorbed twin? The doctor notes Alma looks a lot like Beth. Alma absorbed her twin. What is she is only part-creature? My theory is that Alma is not really the Bird Lady’s daughter. She absorbed her twin amd so took part of her powers amd she is attracting her twin’s mother…

From the trailer, I thought it was somehow gonna tie back to some kind of nazi experiments way back when, since it takes place in the alps, and there was gonna be some leftovers from experiments back then or something lol. They did a good enough job with trailer though to invite speculation.

Wow! First time I don’t agree with Fish Jelly 😳 I have to say I left disappointed. I wanted it to be an insane asylum movie, never expected any creatures. It all started out so promising- the scene on the bike with the runner in the distance by moonlight was great. As soon as the creature aspect entered, the film went down hill from there for me. I couldn’t figure out what decade it was until I saw the white iPhone cord. I also generally tune out at the last quarter of all films when the “battle” scenes begin. The library shootout went on for way too long, wish I had counted bullets. Done complaining lol

I enjoyed it, but also thought it was going to be more of an abduction plot or maybe she is put into an asylum due to what she is seeing/experiencing at the resort?! I was also annoyed by the silly gunplay by the 2 male leads who had no aim!! 😅🎉 I am hovering between a 2.5 and 3 rating. Thanks gentlemen for another fun and colorful review! 😍

I do agree… here is a lot of questions about the story…. He sags do not know or hey only know part of the plan? Did Konig want want Gretchen to be impregnated too or not. At first, he wanted to protect her, but after she found out, he did?
And Tricia, hey wanted to? The boyfriend was in on the plan?
If they want o repopulate, why do they invite more women?
And I would seem strange to let the Cuckoo women on the loose.
Have to see this movie again. But this and Longlegs, I like the effort for doing something different, but not sure if the stories worked.

She said to the German guy “mom’s dead” then threw the wig during the standoff. It would make sense that the father had resentment to Gretchen because she didn’t turn out the way he expected as one of the creatures. I think he had to lie that her mother was “dead” because it was time for another mating season for the creatures and now her mother was the mother bird to pass it along. If the father had his honeymoon with Alma’s mom there, I can see how he would’ve had his honeymoon with Gretchen’s mom and it not working bc their experiments weren’t strong enough yet. I think that the message that Gretchen told to the sister was also closure for herself in a way with knowing that her mom is actually passed but able to look towards having an improved relationship with her sister. The nurse was also explaining that this bird was coming back for its offspring. I’m not sure if this was unprecedented, but I was wondering why she was so focused on Gretchen and not Alma as far as chasing her down. Also when the runaway humanoid was about to put Gretchen in a transsexual she paused and the German guy had to put her back in focus. I wonder if they had a connection bc Gretchen is a “failed” bird or something.
