I know people will disagree with this, but I'm ok with that. It's ok for someone to defend their wife, just the same with someone's. Someone's family, kids, friends, or etc. They are being insulted, criticized, and attacked directly. Saying you should attack women, men, or people can come off as indifferent and it doesn't acknowledge the person or people you are with directly.

Salem, also, I want to give some perspective. As a black woman who grew up in the USA around other black people, baldness has ALWAYS been a negative joke about us. If we wear a wig or weave, a lot of black men would joke that we're bald under there. Even to this day a lot of black men talk trash about our hair, lack of hair, short hair, kinky hair (the same hair they have!!), wig/weave wearing, etc. so to me, joking about being bald is painful. I agree with you, that I don't think Chris Rock meant it negatively. He didn't know she had alopecia and he literally made a movie about how bad relaxers are because he wanted his black daughters to love their naturally kinky hair!! However, we still get called "bald-headed" to this day as an insult usually by black men so I think he really shouldve thought about that. Edit: Okay so I prematurely wrote this comment. Didn't realize you talked about the Bad Hair movie.

i agree with most of your points, but i do have this to say: jada pinkett smith and chris rock have never had a good relationship, and i could understand why she might've reacted differently to him making that joke compared to other ppl speaking on her baldness. basically, chris rock has been picking on jada for about 25 years because she rejected him. also the idea of joking about a black woman's hair in front of a bunch of white ppl is very very icky. u shouldn't really make certain statements in mixed company
also btw have to say that chris's hair documentary spent a lot of time bashing black woman for their decisions on their hair instead of enlightening ppl on the struggles with black hair
and (lastly!) the whole idea of saying that "this should've been dealt with in private" is odd because the joke was made in public

Best take I've seen on this. Yes, Will should not have slapped him, that's fair to say, but also if the initial disrespect was public then the backlash should have been public to make the statement that what Chris Rock said was NOT okay. Even then I wonder if Will using his acceptance speech to put Chris in his place would have even been as impactful as the slap. The thing that irks me now is that too many people are acting like the morality police and writing dissertations supporting Chris Rock, buying out his shows and advocating for a man who routinely exhibits misogynoir and makes anti-black women jokes. As a black woman, it really shows me that black women are truly one of the most disrespected groups of women and no one is really here for us.

One of my main issue with the people defending Chris, is that they tend to minimize what was said to Jada. Which is just not okay. “It was just a joke.” Doesn’t justify anything. Making a joke at the expense of someone else isn’t “just a joke.”

I’m not trying to defend it but we joke about that kind of stuff so much in society. Not that it makes it OK, but for us to say that appearance jokes are low blow is extremely hypocritical considering we have people who make a living off of that comedy. For example, RUclips commentators. What we really need to figure out is, what is OK in comedy and what is not. It’s either all OK or it’s not OK at all. We really can’t have an in between because it’s going to be at somebody’s expense either way.

Did Chris know about her disease? I'll be honest, I didn't even know she had it until after the Will slapping Chris incident. I think the joke was aimed more at just the haircut itself and not the fact that she's losing hair. I can understand why Jada would get upset, but I don't think Chris was trying to make fun of her disease specifically. He just compared her hairstyle to the woman's hairstyle from GI Jane. However, Jada's feelings towards the joke are valid and she's allowed to be offended. I feel like no one can ever admit that they disliked a joke anymore without people online getting angry and calling you a "snowflake".
Still, no physical violence should've been present regardless.

They're not a good comedian TO YOU, but that's actually the most coveted content from comedians. People are almost always the subject or butt of a joke, whether it be men, women, married couples, celebrities, the rich, the poor, children, the elderly, people in various professions. Even subjects that don't target a specific person still effect people. Jokes about mental illness, for example. A comedian might not target anyone by name, but by joking about the mental illness, they're offending many people. The issue here is plenty of people with mental illnesses find that kind of comedy funny. I know I do. You yourself probably don't even realise that you're laughing at someone or something someone does/suffers when you consume comedy. It's pretty much inevitable.

That's a pretty dumb take. A comedian should be able to Joke about anything. If you don't find it funny then just sit down and shut up (or leave) and let others enjoy the act. Nobody's forcing you to laugh.
If you slap that comedian because your fragile ego cant take a little joke, obviously there should be consequences. Will smith shouldn't get a pass just because he's your favorite hollywood hero.

@@adriangeh6414 I disagree. To me, humour should stop being humour when it’s taking shots at other people, a lot of people in the audience didn’t find it funny anyway and I’m kind of surprised that made the cut for an official hosting job, and just because it’s a joke doesn’t mean he can’t face consequences. Something being humour doesn’t stop it from being rude or out of line and, to me, making a unwarranted joke about someone’s hair, especially one that comes from a medical condition and when the person has talked about struggling with it, deserves criticism. But, just to be clear, I don’t think that action should have been to hit him. Two wrongs don’t make a right, and Will didn’t need to be the one to call it out, Jada has a mouth.

It all depends what stance you wish to take. Legally, Will should not have hit anyone. Verbal violence (targeting Jada not only once) does not excuse physical violence under the law. Morally though, that depends on you. If you keep coming for a person (the fact that she rejected him several years ago is not lost in me) and are shock when something happens....Its like come on. I'm not talking about a single joke, I am talking about continuously coming for Jada, aka a pattern. If this had been one joke it would be like wth Will (for the slap, not cussing him out. Him standing up for a BW is something rarely society does and should happen far more often).
Whatever your stance is on the slap its fine but if you're using this as an excuse to drag Jada when she did nothing wrong, just because you're upset that a woman, especially a BW, is an open relationship (where BOTH agree) and is enjoying it instead of having her husband have all the fun, then you're a POS.
If you're using this to spew out your racism and misogyny, you're a POS. If you're condemning Will to hell for this and are saying he should get his Oscar revoked....Please keep the energy the same for the pedophiles, rapists, racists, and other horrible people that have gotten an Oscar. Since these exceed the act of a slap. Like if you genuinely think that trophy is based on morality then a crap ton of people would not have Oscars.

The plot of G.I. Jane is fairly misogynistic, with the main character being abused by men in power because she was considered ultra-feminine and was being (politically) used to make the Navy Seals "gender-neutral." There's a lot of "I'm not like the other girls" throughout the film on top of the societal stereotype of "women hate other women". It is a hyper-masculine war fantasy film that came out in the late '90s. This is why Chris Rock referencing that particular film was in poor taste, on top of using Jada (or any other black woman) as a target of his jokes.

Sigh. The only thing I'm mad about with this is the fact that Will slapping Chris essentially gave permission for non-Black people to get into our business. There's quite a bit of context and nuance missing here.
Firstly, Chris' Good Hair Documentary was made after pressure because of how he repeatedly made jokes laced in misogynoir around Black women's hair. I and many other Black women found the tone of that documentary very mocking. Secondly, Chris has a history and habit of attacking Jada with his jokes, and Will previously warned Chris to keep her name out of his mouth.
Do I agree with slapping people in public? No. But I also don't think Will was being overly sensitive/reactive about it.
Edited to add...I've read more of the comments and people are really out here trying to make Jada out to be some kind of villain controlling Will 😳 Not saying she's perfect, but that too is anti-Blackness. Y'all should just admit you dislike Black women and don't think we should ever feel upset 🙄.

That doesn't make him a "bad" person or anything like that. It seems like he had enough and maybe he has just heard to many people talking about his wife or something and was tired of it. I don't have all that information but it seems likely. At the end of the day none of us really know we will never know and we don't need to and that is ok and I hope they are all ok. Have a good night everyone. Love and light.

32:29 "When are we gonna learn that violence truly doesn't solve anything, but educated conversation, and letting people talk, and listening, and not immediately acting out irrationally"
While it's true that for most situations, violence is never the answer, violence is very intrinsic to revolution on a systemic level (the American Revolution, Bacon's Rebellion, the American Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Stonewall Uprising, and more recently the Black Lives Matter Protests). Meaningful change of the status quo doesn't come about peacefully.
Am I saying Will Smith was correct in using violence in this situation? Absolutely not. There was no need for that in this scenario. My point is that violence sometimes _is_ the answer and shouldn't be entirely discredited. Of course, there's a time and a place for it; this situation was neither, and Will was wrong for acting rashly without thinking.

I was gonna comment on how chris has been making sexist jokes towards jada in other award shows and how racism is making it so much harder for will when it was not that serious but in terms of the information you had at the time of the video the only thing I def disagree is that they should have settled it after, in private.
The joke was made in public, as a disabled person myself, I don't think public "jokes" that are offensive should be handled privately at all. I know for a fact that for a lot of disabled folks it has been a bit cathartic to watch someone finally draw a line at the disrespect put on as a "joke". He could not have slapped chris, sure, but it sure needed to be handled in the same way the joke was, a public callout, at least.

Thank you for talking about this, I also want to add more context or more of a POV. It's the Smiths family's big night. He's up to win an award. His wife has been clowned on for years. Then again on a night that was supposed to be a victory, his wife is joked on again. I honestly know violence isn't the answer, but joking about them again was distasteful. Also to add to speculations Chris has been talking about Jada since 2016, Some even say it dates back further to 1997. Some also say that Will has warned Chris, but I don't know. I don't think Will deserves to get his Oscar taken away, and I think Celebs who have charges of assault on them(or ones with problematic backgrounds) shouldn't have a say on this matter. In the most respectful way, both of them are in the wrong. Chris Rock shouldn’t of made jokes on someone else’s problems and what they’re going through. This also isn’t the first time that he made a joke about Jada. It wasn’t a funny joke. It was very insensitive. Also, yeah, you’re not supposed to disrespect someone else’s wife. You’re gonna get something coming at you. I’m not saying that violence is right but this should already be common sense. And Will Smith is in the wrong for obviously slapping Chris. He let his emotions take over him. And thats what went wrong. I personally can’t blame him because I would be furious, too if someone kept making jokes on my spouse but at the same time, I wouldn’t be hitting nobody, either. You have to pick your fist fights wisely and control your anger.

    • @thedisneydiamond2437
      @thedisneydiamond2437 2 года назад +2

With all due respect, it’s common courtesy not to make jokes like that at someone’s expense and someone shouldn’t have to notify you before ahead of time. People get called sensitive all the time these days but the truth is, is that the people that are actually calling others sensitive are calling them that because they want to say what they want to say without consequences. However, there always is and always will be. Even if we as a society don’t agree with the consequences being made, they still happened! We don’t agree with Will Smith slapping him, absolutely not. It could have been handled better! But, it still happened! And Even if it didn’t happen, something still would have happened sometime after, like, Maybe, if Will Smith had talked to Chris Rock after his act, and said “hey, this wasn’t cool”, or something else! But, this was not the case and we have to see both sides here. Neither side is in the right because neither side showed how to act right in this specific situation. But, Once again, in the most respectful way, I don’t agree with your statement. How was Will Smith supposed to know that he was going to make jokes like that? None of us knew. So, if we don’t know what’s going to happen, we can’t just go up to someone and go “don’t make these jokes about me because they trigger me” what??

As a Black woman, our hair is held to such a high degree and many of us are ridiculed if it doesn’t look “presentable” (examples: wearing your natural hair out & not having it done, leave out not fully blended, wearing braids past their expiration, and being bald). No one really understands what we go through as Black woman to maintain our hair. I hate how everyone chalked it up to Will being overly emotional & over-reacting, Chris being the victim, yet no one focused on how Jada felt. If you don’t understand the dynamics of a certain situation, I suggest people should just listen then speak (or don’t).
I know comedy isn’t supposed to have any real boundaries on who or what they can joke about but I’m tired of Black women being the butt of the joke and I refuse to allow it anymore. It’s been going on for way too long and the only thing that it invites is people of all races and genders to join on downing our image. I don’t care about what happened to Chris Rock because he, too has degraded Black women in the past. That is my BIASED opinion and I stand by that.✌🏾

Yes it's very offensive but it was a lot funnier with the context. If we limit the jokes comedians can make for the fear of being assaulted, comedy will fall. Because a large part of it is dark, exposing the dark sides of reality. Chris made a joke that upset some people and then went on to continue. I think he was well within his right to make the joke and if it didn't stick with the audience then what can he do but move on.

Personally as a black person, it's kind of satisfying to see someone actually get checked for making of jokes towards black women in general.
I do feel like the situation could have been handled better, but I find myself being thankful it got handed at all . (if you understand what I mean)
