  • The first 1,000 people to use this link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare: skl.sh/oddtink... ---- In this episode I will restore this Large lighter made in occupied Japan by Reliance. The lighter is very oxidized and in need of a restoration. I also thought it looked worthy of gold plating so I wanted to practice that skjill on it. I used laser cleaner loaned to me by W2M to clean up the dirty and oxidized surfaces. You can find more about their lasers from here: w2m.fi/?lang=en
    After cleaning the parts were polished and then decreased with acetone. This will allow me to get nice shiny plating on the parts. I used an electroless nickel plating method. I prefer it over electroplating as it usually gives better results and plated parts evenly on the inside as well. electroplating can have issues were plating is much thicker is some areas and some areas are hard to plate because current doesn't flow through all the areas of the metal in the same way. But in the end both methods have their own advantages. If you are a beginner in metal plating I recommend checking out my electroplating tutorial. Electroplatin is by far the easiest method fo r a beginner. Link to the tutorial: • How to make simple DIY...
    Once the parts were nickel plated I gold plated it with electroplating method called brush plating were you just rub the electrolyte on the surface of the item and gold will appear on the surface.
    I also needed to make a new gasket to replace the old one. I just took thick gasket paper and used hole punches to make a ring of the correct size.
    I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!

    Fun thing about these types of lighter is that you can run them on Paraffin (aka Kerosene), which lasts a lot longer in the lighter as it doesn't evaporate over time, so rather than being bone-dry it will light when it's needed... :D

      @@Curtis.Carpenter It's a confusing British thing, Paraffin fuel, as used in lamps and stoves, is for the rest of the world usually called Kerosene, as opposed to Paraffin wax for candles, and "Liquid Paraffin", aka Mineral Oil, which is used for horses with colic amongst other things, very confusing!!! :S

    I'd be really interesting in seeing a comparison between sand blasting vs laser vs chemical for removal...
    Just to see what is best, is there any difference (other than time/cost) in the outcome.

    • @christiaanbrown4278
      @christiaanbrown4278 2 года назад +31

      One thing that I think would have been lost with sandblasting on this lighter would be the fine engraving, the laser saved that engraving on the lighter. I believe that the laser is much funner to use too and much quieter.

      Valid question. If you're a downright chemist I'd like to think nothing can beat the perfect delivery of chemicals in an order specifically designed around what you're cleaning off, but it would certainly take longer, end up costing at least a little bit, and pose significant risk to the material if you get anything wrong.

    • @hibahprice6887
      @hibahprice6887 2 года назад +8

      @@craigape It is enough to choose an acid for various metals that will effectively dissolve oxides, you can use phosphoric acid in a weak concentration, although it will take a long time .. Better an average concentration for 12 hours and then polish, All the same, corrosion leaves deep depressions, and no matter what you clean it, if this is not an exact part, it does not matter, the surface is ALREADY damaged

    I love how you did the gold plating. Instead of coating it entirely, it shows a little bit of the nickel through the crevices, which gives it that vintage feel still rather than looking painted. The end result feels like a beautifully well preserved old piece rather than a brand new one, and it looks so good.

    For installing the screws for the fuel port and flint port, try using a coin like a US or Canadian dime. Most lighters are made to refill these items without having to go look for tools to do so. That is the reason the screw for the fuel port has a curved bottom and the width of the slot is what it is. They just need snugged not torqued greatly.

    O.T. and Ducktor strike again! Awesome restoration, as usual. BTW, I assume you made that spray can shaker? If so, could you share the plans for it? Would love to have one for myself. Thanks again as always for your great videos. God bless. Rev. D.

    I can't believe you started using water instead of liquid ice. Never expected you to sell out to Big h20!

    That patina on gold is really interesting on the lighter. Is this part copper with it?

      Most of the lighter is made of brass, which is made of copper and zinc. I love Brass and Bronze, I also love copper. the brass is stronger than straight copper.

      I was wondering if there was copper in it after seeing what looked like verdigris on it at the beginning of the video.
