Vintage Mining Lantern and Battery Restoration

- I restored this vintage mining lantern from East Germany, DDR. It's very rusty and the battery is completely dead. I bought this awesome looking lantern couple months ago from a flea market.
I started with disassembly. Interestingly the battery had leaked inside of the lantern but none of the liquid seemed to come out which was an excellent sign. all the seals were in good condition despite of the rust on the body.
I used laser cleaning device from W2M laser. They lend me one of their devices whenever I need one. You can find more info about them from here: laser.w2m.fi/?... The laser will burn old paint and rust and leave clean surface to be painted or welded etc.
I fixed most of the dents and filled pitting from rust with filler. Then I applied base coat, and either red or black paint and finished with automotive 2K clear coat. 2K clear coat will ensure the paint will last a lifetime. A lot of times 1K paint of clear coat will not last in use or if you spill oil or gasoline on it
.
All the small bits were blacked with gun blue and oiled to make sure they won't rust immediately. I re-used the old wires. they were on decent condition and most importantly they were made to fit and seal the battery compartment so the liquid won't leak to the top part of the lantern when it's turned upside down.
I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!

I didn't realize DDR aka East Germany is not known with that name in English, so in case you're confused, that's what it means
“Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR), often known in English as East German” (Wikipedia)
- Neat, I honestly didn’t know that. Every day’s a school day!
+Odd Tinkering
Im from East Germany. In English means it "GDR = German Democratic Republic". That was the imprint of our exports.
I never heard anyone call it the DDR except for my great grandfather who came from Germany after serving in WWI.
NGL, I was definitely thinking of Dance Dance Revolution.
The care you put into these pieces is beautiful. Fantastic and satisfying work!
Mad respect for restoring the battery. Those Ni-Cd are comfortably placed in my "DO NOT FIX" and "STAY AWAY FROM" lists.
He could have thrown in a modern battery and nobody would have called him out on it... Ah who am I kidding? It's the RUclips comment section! Some smug cock would have.

I make it a point to never go to him because this may be hard to accept, but he's a real QUACK!
I could watch an entire hour of just things being cleaned with that laser.
I mean yeah, I could to, but sandblasting is so calming ✌🏼✌🏼
Play power washer simulator to get a similar kind of experience. I keep hoping the devs will add a laser rust remover gameplay mode or dlc. :D
Too bad these machines cost as much as a small car
@@sorrea2141 well you doo have two kidneys
Laser rust removal is just so damn satisfying
3:51 that's exactly German engineering, that is a safety measure, even if the nut fails and falls off, the bolt stays in so you can still carry the lantern around
Smart
That's hindsight German engineering
@@NicoWagner89 Hindsight, you think so ?
Or you can put a stick in there
Врятли такая гайка или болт сломается
I always get amazed when the insides of old objects are clean (like the bulb housing).
Essentially some things can only be designed in certain ways
It's a mining lantern so it will be air tight to prevent explosion hazard if there's some flammable gas. That's also why it needs a special tool to open, I would imagine the key was kept in a safe location to perform battery charging and bulb changes so the guys using these would not be tempted to open them in the mine.
I love the laser! But I do miss the bowl of rust remover and liquid ice

@@LoafnotFoundYT sometimes when he restores something, it takes him a long time. I wasnt scared, but happy for a new upload.
It's good to see you getting down and dirty with the vintage stuff again! As much as I enjoy the electronics restorations, I miss this style of video. Looks awesome too 👍
It’s funny how countries thousands of miles from each other have such similar designs from different people. Nice job!
How has nobody mentioned he TASTED the liquid in there. Absolute madman, had to subscribe. 👍🏻
Oh my god I didn't even notice
[Edit]
I mean, I'm sure he didn't actually, it's not like you can see his face and it would almost definitely be _extremely_ dangerous to ingest even a tiny bit of the stuff, but it's still funny
Happy to see that you and Ducktor are back on the vintage. Another wonderful restoration.
Finally, not another console, not another retrobright. Thank you!
I agree. The fact that you were able to restore the battery is fantastic. Great restoration. 👍😁
Man, even pulling out the litmus test for it. amazing. truly.
Very well done! My Grandpa was a Coalminer. He would have loved this!
It felt like a million years since your last video. I am so addicted to these that I throw them to my TV so I can watch on the biggest screen possible.
Don't worry subscribers, the Ducktor is a professional! He is on the case to bring light to this channel! You can all relax now!
I'm glad to see you back as well. I have not been a fan of another restoring channel taking your glory. The "other guy" can't do things like you can. Keep it up odd tinkering... and thank you.
Seeing a video come out made my night! Every time I log into RUclips I hope to see a video from you. Love seeing the work you do and how you restore things!
You stay picking the most messed up things on the planet to fix. Mad respect 👏🏽
I quite liked the dents, they gave it even more character
Wonderful job! And I got to say, those rubber gaskets held up amazingly! I was impressed that the reflector wasn't full of gunk!
This remains the only restoration channel I'll subscribe to. For whatever reason the others just don't feel right, but that's probably because I've been watching these for so long. Thanks for all you do, Odd!
I just received some news about the Birch Gold Group about the U.S. government who now is devaluating the U.S. dollar. They don't want any foreign country to beat them to it. I received this news while listening and watching this educational video.

That laser cleaner is the bomb, Yo. I would clean things for people for free, if I had one of those cleaners. It is almost magic.
What a nice thing to tinker with! I'm sure it appreciated your time and effort restoring it.
I see what you did there!
@@TheKidsAreSOnotOkay ?
That laser cleaning machine is definitely one of the engineering masterpieces.
I thought you were going to replace the battery with modern cells. Kudos for taking the time and making the old one work. I learned something new today😁🙏 Awesome work👊
Watching that laser cleaner cleaning the rust was...way too satisfying for me.
On today's episode of "The Future is Now, Old Man", we use light - photons, massless fundamental particles - to clean rust from metal.
Please tell me I’m not the only one that misses the pieces being cleaned with rust remover/ketchup/water?! It’s so much more satisfying to me and also is unique from a lot of other popular restoration channels which is probably why I liked it so much.
I'm very new to this channel but have to say I'm totally addicted! I've watched almost them all in two weeks, they're so strangely relaxing. Keep up the good work and I look forward to future tinkerings 😊
These are so cool to watch, but they are so relaxing that one could fall asleep watching them. But they are fascinating to witness all these various restorations, I am addicted to these videos.
I loved the electronic game phase, but I do prefer these videos, it's all about the odd tinkering. The unusual items.
Inside was in remarkably good condition, built the lamp well. Great restoration.
This was amazing although I wish you would've kept the dents!! Imagine all the stories it probably went through and I wouldve loved to have seen all those years of use still preserved 😍
made to last. Know the hand lamp from my army days. Thanks for the loving restoration. Greetings from East Germany.🙏🙏🥰👍🏻
I'm always happy to see a new OT video. It's so relaxing compared to most of RUclips.
I will never get tired of seeing the magic laser rust thingy
I love how each video is a small masterpiece by itself ❤️
The sound of the spray being pressed at 12:50 is extremely satisfying!

Brilliant restoration, would love to have seen more laser work, that’s definitely your USP. 😊
I love how your camera shows the shape of the laser beam.
Really cool tech.
That laser rust removal is the most satisfying thing I've ever seen. Love it.
Good to see you back OT! Looking forward to more restoration magic from you!
You have done that very well. I grew up in the former GDR and knew these lamps from this time. They were completely black. Of course, the brightness is not comparable to today's lamps. Alone the grid in front of the lamp glass takes a lot of light away. Maybe you would have been able to rebuild it to LED technology?
He could, but Odd doesn't upgrade. He just restores.
Extraordinary!
100% restored. I thought the battery is wasted.
Thank you!
There's an oldie but goodie brought back to life using the battery orginally designed for it. 😁👍🇺🇸🇨🇱
This dude literally has EVERY TOOL for the job!
About "This doesn't seem like German engineering" - It's eastern german engineering. In the DDR they made everything out of something. The spirit was: If it works in any way it's fine. ;-P
2:40 Haha he tasted the battery water to tell if it's basic or acrilic. Keep it up I love your work
Its been a while, but another beautiful restoration
Because of you I actually went out of my way to open my old xbox 360 and the controller and clean them both
Muy buen trabajo de restauración, felicitaciones!!!🇵🇪
It's good to see you brother. Welcome back. I was hoping to see this video at one point. 👍🏻
This is epic !!!! Makes me wonder why I’m so lazy. 😓
Oh, a classic Odd Tinkering! Absolutely enjoy watching you repairing stuff 🖤
Damn that brings me some old memories. DDR wasn't ideal, but most of the people were happy, life was easier and slower. The streets were much safer, I loved walking at night with my wife, today is like a suicide attempt.
Interesting 1st person account. I would have thought a repressive authoritarian "communist" regime would have been not so great to live in. Doesn't seem like there was much "democratic" nor "republic" about it.
It's fascinating that it came with a tool to help you disassemble it.
Seeing the change in time on the watch as the sanding is going on is funny/interesting. Did anyone else see? Lol. It's one thirty eight, poof its two fifteen, poof its three o' six. My arm would have fallen off......
So the sanding takes alot of time to do? The devotion this guy has is incredible
Glad you are BACK! Sorry about some of us Americans not knowing what DDR meant. And this doesn’t look like German engineering; more like imported Soviet engineering.
Sand blasting: The most satisfying thing to watch.
Laser cleaner: Hold my beer!
Dagnabbit! Why is it that in all of these restoration videos the person shows wonderful skills with the exception of knowing how to TIN A SOLDERING IRON!!!
I didn't take a close look, but could those bulbs be replaced, or is a sealed beam unit?
Otherwise, another lovely restoration. Been a while bud. Hope to see more great videos from you soon!
I’m not sure
But I agree
Going back and looking at the disassembly part of the lamp reflector, I see the tiny bulb can be replaced. But I’m still not sure of the main lamp bulb. I’m sure it could be retrofitted with LED bulbs.
@@MarkMeadows90
The GDR was not a place, where you'd throw away a whole lamp just because the bulb burned out. So of course both bulbs were replaceable.
@@grumpyoldman5772 I kinda thought so lol
@@grumpyoldman5772 Yup, the sealed beam is an American thing, in the Europe all the bulbs in car lights (this lantern obviously uses car headlight components) are replaceable. Except the new LED ones of course.
i was just hoping you’d have a new video last night and i’m happy to see you posted one a little while later!
Love these things! So cool!
I tell myself to listen and watch something that's educational, even safe. Something that won't harm your thinking.
02:48 - Acid Test - Doesn't need to be, but surprised Susan lets you get away without disclaiming fluid testing by taste.
03:50 - German Engineering - I'd think that lamp is old enough that the question would be, 'which Germany?' I wouldn't put that past diese lüsternen Ostkeime.
04:17 - Bolt Issue - every man knows that pain
06:50 - Mirror Finnish - I'm almost tempted to futz with foamoshoppe to de-dome that reflection just to see what the Odd Shed Roof looks like properly.
08:00 - Kirk's Razor - So, the immediate question is how does that thing handle bread, ham and cheese? Or, rather, can one make a nice toastie with it?
16:00 - Moody Blues - Just curious - is there a reason one cannot or ought not simply dunk small parts in a mug of gun blue? Is it just the mis-located coffee problem all over again?
20:30 - End of Line - Again, just curious, with the crimpey thingies on the wirey-whatsists, might not solder do it's capillary thing with the doodad? Certain it wouldn't make a difference, can't help but think it'd form a better than needed connection. Dunno, though, just askin'.
Lastly, how temptin' is it to swap out the dodgy batteries for a plethora of Lions, whack an industrial grade LED in there and see if you can annoy aliens? Not sayin' you should, but, still...
Just as a friendly reminder, if you want time stamps you have to use this ":" between the numbers.
@@TFGA_tFoMS Oh, OK, I wasn't really thinking that would be a thing, but that's shockingly helpful for a YT reply, cheers. May your burgers always be moist. :-)
I'll see if i can edit.
You missed one small detail. 8:28 USING THE DAMN LASER !!!!!!!!!!!
The battery terminal connectors he uses are designed to be crimped, they're pretty common even in modern applications.
0:04 "DDR", so it might in fact be Russian engineering.

Another great restoration video. good job! it's been a while since you made one of these. Although I don't doubt your restorations skills any second, I'm curious about how over rusted or over dirty the items you restore are. I would most likely make sure items look as rusty/dirty as possible before I restore them if I made youtube videos.
Props to you for tasting the liquid. You're so very dedicated to your craft.
Nice work, Odd Tinkering!
When you used the gun blue on the small parts, the thing that came to mind was nickel plating. What’s the difference between the two?
And I cheered when the Ducktor returned! I like how he just watches you clean the lens in his bathtub. He needs more camera time! 😉
the bluing agent (gun blue) is oxydating the piece, creating a protecting layer of magnetite (dark) covering the steel underneath. It's the same principle with nickel plating : covering the piece to protect it for rusting by being exposed to oxygen and water, but in the cas of plating, the piece is just being covered by a different metal that is corrosion resistant (nickel is very good for that) :)
@@MaesHawkEye Gun bluing solution, more generally 'cold bluing', is actually a selenium dioxide or selenous acid solution that forms a black, passive copper selenide surface on ferrous materials. To form (black) magnetite (Fe3O4), you'd need to perform hot bluing or rust bluing. An actual magnetite surface provides magnitudes better protection and durability than any cold blued surface. Cold bluing is great for cosmetic black finishes though!
welcome back! you did a beautiful job!!
