Yes, Leon Russell composed this beautiful song. Donny Hathaway, Karen Carpenter, Andy Williams & Ray Charles were just a few of the artists that did great covers of this classic. Love this reaction! ❤️
This song has been recorded by over 200 artists & it's in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Like you, I've always considered it one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Leon was a legit musical genius. He wrote "Delta Lady"..."Tightrope"..."This Masquerade"..all recorded by multiple artists, most notably Joe Cocker. In 1970 Leon & Joe Cocker put together a tour & did an album that was legendary.."Mad Dogs & Englishmen". When they performed Leon orchestrated the whole thing & on stage would be Leon & Joe, backup singers, musicians, their wives, girlfriends, kids & dogs all having a great time. You should do Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" from that time with Leon. The sound has Joe's voice not quite loud enough but the music & the backup singers are fantastic. There was magic that night & you can see it in the performance & the effect on the audience. It's amazing.💙☮💙
I love your reactions. You make me smile so big. Reminds me how lucky I truly am to have been around for these great artists. Makes being 70 and achy not so bad. Lol
Me 70, Leon was awesome and I saw everyone from 1967. He was so talented and everyone in the scene knew that. Saw him live in San Francisco summer of 72'. Glad you enjoyed him. Music brings us together ya know, we are all the same in most ways. Thanks, you yourself have a beautiful voice.
Yes, The Great Leon Russell! Thank You Van. There is so much to this Hall of Fame Songwriter. My favorite is his long-term friendship and work with Willie Nelson. You just reacted to Superstar…Leon wrote that too!
This entire show is just a wonderful display of creativity and love. It’s Leon and friends just hanging and jamming. Someone bakes a pie during the show! One of the first shows of its kind on TV. If you need a soul warmer, give it a watch. It’s called ‘Leon Russell and Friends - The Homewood Sessions’ (1970).
I’m so happy to see you covering Leon’s “A Song For You,” Van. You chose a great version and performance. I have nearly given up on asking reactors to take a look at the rest of this show (Leon Russell & Friends - The Homewood Sessions). This was done at a TV studio in L.A. Leon wanted to do the show because it was the first TV station that was capable of broadcasting in stereo. There are SO many great songs and different styles in it. As the introduction says, they came together for SIX HOURS of unscripted and unrehearsed music-making. They recorded it all and edited it down to one hour for TV. For me, it’s up there with the best 60 minutes of music on RUclips. In the info for this concert video is a song index you can click on. “A Song For You” is the only one he did solo in this show. There are some surprises, like Furry Lewis, who has his own story, and Don Nix who, with Leon, used to hang out with Elvis in Memphis. Leon is a well respected consummate pro! Check out “Prince of Peace.” You may need to pull up lyrics because it is a rocking version - but you will love the message. Thank you Van. ruclips.net/video/4bwMqliLXZQ/видео.html
@@julietate7806 well said! If only more people knew how many songs they love have Leon’s imprint on them. The day I found the Homewood Sessions I could not believe my luck. Awesome, awesome 60 minutes.
Thank you for putting some respect on that! 💜 Many people have covered this song, but Leon Russell wrote it and I think performs it the best. During a conversation with someone who challenged him to write a love song on the spot, Leon said he could do it and he did this song in 10 minutes! The man is a genius if anybody is. Maybe by now you have heard a little of his history - he was an incredible studio musician who has played on almost every album of major artists over the decades. Then, of course, he went on to make his own music. 🎵 Elton John knew him from long ago and loved him. Elton tracked him down only a few years before Leon died and took him on a music tour and on a TV interview extravaganza. Elton wanted to make sure that Leon's last round in life was from the top echelon as he deserved even though Leon had to undergo some rehab before and during the tour due to medical reasons. But he was a trooper and he got it done with his good friend. 🎗
Morning Van, love your reactions . How about some Allman Brothers songs like Whipping Post, No Way Out, Stormy Monday, Statesboro Blues…, so many tremendous AB songs to choose from. Filmore East live best versions you will love , I promise!
I LOVE your reaction. I felt it with you, even as I know both versions. It is one of the best songs ever. Cheers to Leon Russell, Master of Space and Time. Enjoy the rabbit hole! Wait to see who he even worked with. Such a legacy.
One of Russell's influences was Ray Charles - you can hear it in his voice. He's from Oklahoma, and his influence ranged far and wide, including the Beatles, Elton John, country, and rock. He is sorely missed.
Leon Russell wrote it, Donny Hathaway covered it. You should listen to the Carpenters version - she might "Dolly Parton" you again. Its different from Donny Hathaway's version for sure, but its interesting, you should check that one out too. I recommend the recorded version with the saxophone solo.
Leon was very underrated. His music is classic. Please listen to Jumping Jack Flash/Youngblood. My favorite song. Also Tightrope, Lady Blue, Delta Lady. He had many hit songs and sang with many different famous bands. He never wanted to be center stage. He was private.
Only just caught up on you seeing the unique and amazing Leon :) He was known as the Master of space & time xxx AND, what a pianist ! He studied classical piano for 10 years but was born with a problem with one of his upper vertebrae which caused him to be left hand dominant, so he realised that he'd never play classical music to a great standard....... so he invented his own style :) :) Hey, and they say God works in mysterious ways :) Hell yes
Leon never hit a bad lick in his amazing career. One of the most influential artists of all time. This is my favorite song f all time and Leon is my favorite artist. I met him after his show in Atlanta in 2015. He held my hand the whole time we talked. Number one on my bucket list. He died the next year
I can't believe you reacted to this song!! BRAVO! This is Leon's song 💖 My favorite version of this song is Willie Nelson's Cover; it always makes me teary eyed. Leon Russel was a fantastic songwriter and performer; he's been covered so many times; Another GREAT one is his song Masquerade, covered by the impeccable George Benson. Bravo again, Van!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
“Of Thee I Sing” by Leon Russell. I personally recommend “Of The I Sing” I believe you will really like it. Leon Russell J.J. Cale are originators of the Tulsa sound. They are both amazing and so is TULSA and the 918. Spastic Crew fa Life!!! They called Leon Russell “The Master of Space and Time”.
I’m a year late but yes Leon is a favorite of mine since 1970’s the man was brilliantly talented. There are a few more that are in my top 10. He worked with everyone from the Beatles to Frank Sinatra. Checkout more of him ✌️❤️
#Van Leon Russell wrote this song in 1970, has been covered by some greats, especially Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, Elton John and Aretha Franklin and others.
Leon Russell is a legend. great session musician for decades, song writher and performer. He wrote this, it has been recorded by many singers. Ray Charles version is a masterpiece.
He wrote this song for Rita Coolidge who was his girlfriend in 1070. She was with him on the Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour in 1970. He was from Tulsa as I am and he would have George Harrison and Eric Clapton come into town at the studio he built in an old church aptly named Church Studios. Those guys would go out to local live music clubs and sometimes sit in with the band at the club. Great time to be in Tulsa and Leon was a true Oklahoman. A Song for You is a beautiful song he did write with feeling.
Oh yea this is a Leon Original and this performance was from a ABC TV Special show I think...He and his band perform about 10 songs on it..The whole thing is in You Tube .. You might as well take a listen to all of Leons albums like The Shelter People...You will like it all..
I found this out from a Bruce Hornsby post when Leon passed (I think you’ve reacted to Bruce?), anyway, Leon specifically studied COGIC piano players. He tried to emulate their style. Yes he wrote this song but Donny’s cover is the goat, but Leon’s hits hard in its own way.
He was a session musician in LA who broke out on his own like Glen Campbell. Leon was also a great song writer. Tightrope & Delta Lady by him are amazing.
One of my very favorite musicians, songwriters and singers. So much talent and one of the most amazing concerts I was ever lucky enough to see. I actually saw Russell and Joe Cocker together in high school. Dang I miss those days!!
YOUR INTRO SONG IS LOUD. YOUR SPEAKING VOICE AND LEON'S SINGING IS VERY LOW VOLUME. GOOD REACTION. I had to strain to hear it even with my blue tooth speaker all the way up. Thank you.
Amongst the pantheon, and now he's making them all cry: Marvin, Aretha, David, Elvis, Karen, Jimmy, Freddy and the rest of the Imortals. I love LFR, you crack me up bro, you ever in Michigan, I'll turn you on to some hip chit.
Hey Van! Someone (in these comments) recommended a John Lee Hooker and Van Morrison collaboration. Good idea. Try "Never Get Out of These Blues Alive". It's on the "NO DANCING" album.
Brother, I think sometimes God whispers in someone's ear and says, "Write this." And I believe it happened that way for Leon. Superb reaction, and keep on keeping on.
Yes, Leon Russell composed this beautiful song. Donny Hathaway, Karen Carpenter, Andy Williams & Ray Charles were just a few of the artists that did great covers of this classic. Love this reaction! ❤️
Nobody can sing this like Leon. He wrote it..He feels it and makes you feel it too. Such a beautiful song can make you cry. One of my favorites too.
I agree 100%.
Leon was ONE of a kind. So good.
Please check out Leon’s induction into the hall of fame in 2011! A beautiful tribute by Elton John
Leon also wrote Superstar which both the Carpenters, and later Luther Vandross covered
Must give credit- co wrote with Bonnie Bramley.
@@roxannehale1386 yes I forgot , that's right

Leon wrote it. ❤ It was a pleasure watching your reaction. There aren’t enough “beautifuls” to describe this song. ❤
