- Every AMG Fan wants to know: What is the 4 Cylinder C63 Hybrid like?! The #C63 now has 680BHP in the w206 Generation, losing the V8 but gaining huge power and a 4Matic system for the first time! Losing some things, and gaining some things.
As a reminder: this gen had to use a 4 Cylinder as #MercedesAMG had to help reduce emissions across the whole Mercedes Benz fleet, so it’s most popular car had to change technology. So it also loses the V8 RWD formula and gains fully variable all wheel drive and a hybrid system inspired by Mercedes F1. It also tries to make up with it with the addition of almost 700 horses!
The 4 cylinder unit aka M139L uses the MGU-H electric gas turbocharger from F1 and the AMG ONE, and by itself makes 476BHP, making it the most powerful 4 cylinder production engine in the world. Like the V8 of old, it’s also a one-man-one-engine unit hand built in Affalterbach, AMG HQ.
After this, we get a huge boost from the electric system. A 6.1KW performance battery on the rear helps power an “Electric Drive Unit” or EDU, sitting directly on the rear axle. The EDU houses the Electric Motor, a 2 speed transmission and the limited slip differential. Together, this system gives consistent 93BHP and 320NM too, OR a mind blowing 204 BHP on kick down for 10 seconds! Making that output of 680 BHP! Torque is a mind boggling 1020NM and the claimed 0-60 is 3.4 seconds - today you’ll get to see my face when we test it!
It’s not all positive though. The exhaust and sound is likely to be hugely muted vs what we’re used to. That powerful system adds Over 200kg weight making the car a portly 2111KG. So what is this going to do to the steering neutrality, body roll, rigidity, understeer and general handling characteristics? Something I hope to see in action today.
Today at Immendingen, we are joined by AMG handling expert Rene, will join us to give an idea of what changes have been made and what the goal for the project was. Including some insights into the different driving modes, ESP modifications, EV mode and rear wheel steering.
We’ll also get an idea of the suspension today. It’s a completely modified AMG Ride control suspension with a new front axle, new rear axle sub frame, new stiffer springs on the front and rear and a damping system more advanced than traditional systems. We’ll see how it handles normal road driving and more exciting track stuff.
Speaking of track stuff: the car has Drift Mode!! Where all 680 HP goes to the rear wheels, de-coupling the front axle. We’ll test this plenty today! We’ll also get an understanding of “Boost Mode” that the race mode of the C63 has, and how it works in reality.
Sound won’t be final, but we’ll get some idea of what it’ll be like. More crucially, I want to see if it’ll stack up as a serious performance car. These days weight is not the be-all end-all of the handling topic - it’s how you deal with it that counts!

Did you ask them how quickly the battery dies and how long it will take to recharge for example on a track day? Seen the car at AMG last week when I visited them and it looks much better in real life!

Yep, I had to cut it because the video was getting clogged. While we were driving, launching drifting: it never went below 50% and by the end was charged to 80. Recuperation was extremely effective, and they boost mode energy saving very smart.

Heavy. Sounds terrible. Over priced. Over complicated. V8 was plenty fast enough, if you want to go faster than fast just get an electrical appliance and be done with it. V8 C63 owners rejoice, your resale just went up a notch.

Yeah Merc got really selective of the kind of person they let these firsts do and it's someone who does actual criticism.
I find it odd that the cars that are unwrapped cannot be driven and they were not allowed to turn it on. Now this week the driving experience is in the camo car and the guys arent even allowed to drive it again. I wonder if it has something to do with the reliability of the car. I could be completely wrong but I was told that people have seen a few of the protos broken down and break down while testing.
I worry that this new system has become too complicated and will be a lemon.

@@yllibakalli2766 All car launches involve broken down prototypes, its what they are for. You drive them until they break over and over again. The full press drives for C63 are in a few weeks and they will use shiny well polished examples to get the best photos so nothing is different to any other car launch.

In Australia this car is being priced at nearly 200k AUD. People want to drive C63S as a status symbol, muscle, flex, not to be laughed at by owners of real AMG V8. I think sales will not be good…

Problem is... its like why then not just get the Tesla Model 3 Performance. Save fuel costs, service costs etc and I'd assume the Tesla is going to be much faster in everyday driving due to the instant power all the time. 4cylinder just doesn't sound right so why not just go for power and remove the sound all together. 🤔 I expect the C63 to handle better but that's something only to be truly appreciated on a race track 🤔

It is an engineering exercise aswell as a tribute for mercedes’ f1 succes and no doubt in my mind it will perform incredibly on a track too. All its redundant criticism came from its ”heavy” weight.

I have worked for Mercedes-Benz for 30 years and have never had so much fun! These new cars are so relentlessly quick and have such cornering limits that seasoned track vets get nauseous. It takes some getting used to. At training four weeks ago they had three different kind of Anti-Nausea medicine at the track for participants...and a lot of people used it. Some people after the initial track blast, opted out for the rest of the driving exercise. Open your mind and prepare to be absolutely amazed. :)

@@MercedesGuy1954 its not always about the being quick, if i wanted just that i would buy a tesla. A hybrid c63 is like microwaving a burger, its quick and gets you there but who wants a microwaved burger. (I didnt come up with that analogy, but forgot who did)
I solely love merc, however even I can admit bmw m cars are a lot more track focused out of factory. C63 is known for being able to go fast, but also enjoying the ride that gets you there. If its been done by the noise the V8 makes or the way the back end can kick out, but thats the fun in it.
Im sure majority Merc loyalists such as myself can easily admit if you want a track focused car, then there are far better options in the same price range.
The only thing i see the new c63 having over previous generations is the fact that it can be used more as a daily with its hybrid 2l system. But even your V8 drinking fuel was part of the fun of owning a proper c63 tbh

You can really see the lack of excitement and disappointment here and with other automotive reviewers. Cars that have legendary history/engines that roar have been turned into muted house cats. The artificial sample sound adds insult to injury too
At basically 4700 pounds, going to cost well over 100k , and no more V8? I don’t think it’s worth it. Anybody that knows about cars know power to weight ratio is crucial. It’s alot of cars that’s going to be as fast or faster in that price range

The starting MSRP should be in the ballpark of $85k to $90k. Model 3 Performance has more power and is faster in a straight line than M3 and C63 but costs comparably to an M340i or a C43.

The exhaust makes me sad. I have a 21’ C43 with the exhaust option and it sounds amazing. I wanted to upgrade to this in 2024 but not so sure now.

Genuinely surprised by the handling considering it 2111kgs, straight line performance looks fun too, but the sound seems rather dull. Should be interesting to see how well it sells in comparison to the W205.

I will keep my 205 C63s coupe for ever and it will be my last C63 . I will most likely look at another brand that will give that sound , soul and has to be coupe.

why should you do an engine swap? it doesn't even look better than the previous model. Just buy the old one.
That M139 engine is being way too overworked, and it's a shame the current E63s has had such a huge price increase otherwise that would have been the next choice for that sound so many are complaining about...
I've never owned an AMG but always appreciated what they were and what they offered. It's disheartening to see what the mighty C63 has become - sad times. What used to provoke an aural stimulation unlike anything else now provides a dull sound enhanced by speakers and EV noises. I know, I know - gotta move with the times, but I can't help but feel sad.
We don’t run a C63 to leave the house quietly - we leave it to wake everyone in a 1/2 mile radius and put a smile on the old guy at number 7 who remembers the thrill of a V8. Sorry it the future I’ll sit in the past.
Nice video and Yes we've moved on from the glorious V8's and yes time and tech and EU laws have cause this but the piped sound in the cabin plus how embarrassingly quiet it is outside is just not it for a C63. Here's hoping in future with cleaner fuels, we'll see the V8 come back.

M cars have always been more driver focused. That's bmws whole brand. Merc combines luxury with fat engines. Well not that fat anymore but you get my point 😂

I enjoy a C63s but I can’t object to what AMG have managed in this new model. It’s just a sign of the times and I think I can accept it as much as I’m a little sad this day has come.
Everyone knew it was going to be crazy fast compare to previous gen but in this video it clearly shows that this car has lost it's growl and soul, its tech advanced but this powertrain will get bored real quick just like Tesla Plaid.

How can a C 63 be a hybrid? How can you replace the 6.2 and 4.0 V8 and expect to get away with it? Its basically a A45 AMG on steroids. Your better of buying both the 6.2 & 4.0, and you will still have change to spare! Long live the V8’s! Raz, get a grip please.
Impressive tech... Dont want one! Put same tech onto the Straight 6 from the E53 and give it 900-1000bhp and now im interested. That 2.0 Litre 4 Cylinders in a car that value does absolutely nothing for me regardless of performance. That boot on the Estate is unforgiveable for not having a flat floor. Renders the car usless to dog owners who want to put a crate in the back.
Even though the new C63 has 200 more bhp than my Macan but I’d consider this to be a huge downgrade in terms of driving satisfaction.

It weighs as much as my three row Acura MDX Type S family SUV. No escaping that weight. Dynamically the new M3 and the old V8 is a much better choice. At this weight should have gone full electric. I could stomach that more than a V4 that’s being overworked to death.

Bavarian auto assembled in Mexico at a Bavarian price tag. Last I knew the AMG Coupe was still built overseas. Hope they solved the roof rattle issue.

It wont be out of juice, it’s a small battery that recharges enough energy for you to do a new pull after some braking in the corners

Dang. Just came from watching the new GT3RS (and that sound and soul) to this.
The new C63amg seems fast… etc but so many modes, screens, just too much going on.

I’m either keeping my W209 CLK55 AMG or switching to BMW. I was hoping this car would excite me, but it’s such a let down.
It looks nice but AMGs are about the sound. It’s like going a to concert or comedy show and having them perform with sign language.
Love this channel. Raz smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. Never going to sell my AMG GTC.
My actual verdict will come without filter when I drive a finished car myself!

When Raz reviews this, I expect him to over exaggerate the qualities of the handling to detract from the lack of noise and V8. Similar to how he did the new C43 vs the older one.
Haptic controls alone are reason enough for me to give this generation a pass. Jeeeesus Mercedes, love you muchly, but this is an affront.

Extremely disappointing. Doesn't matter if it has more power. Its weighs over 2 tonnes and has the engine out of a hatchback. Save your money and get a current CLA45 AMG instead.

The pumped in sound that car makers do: Why does it not sound like a dark and crazy engine? Why can’t you choose what engine it sounds like? Why can’t you make it as loud as you want? They’re missing a huge trick here!
