It's not the electrification, but the ICE size that was the bad call by AMG. Throw a twin turbo V6 with the same electric motor and you'd have a completely different level performance car. Replacing a high performance V8 with a IL4 was a little too much of a stretch this soon. Make the next generation a IL4 after people get used to not having a V8.
The weird thing for me is that they didn't have to make it like this. They actually could've retained the V8 or even used one of their brilliant 6-cylinders. In some other video on this car, one of the guys from Mercedes says that they could've stuck with the old formula, but chose to go down this route because smaller engines and electrification is the future. It seems to me like they came up with this concept in a bubble where they all agreed on something that just isn't true. People don't want complicated electrified power-at-all-cost cars. Not in a C63. The brakes on my 330e behave similarly. I think it has to do with the regenerative braking which switches off below a certain speed, then it switches to the regular brakes. It takes a bit of concentration to make it stop smoothly.
Might have been totally missed in the debate but notice how on the old C63 the rear wheel arch was flared out and much wider than the stock c-class. Notice how this one literally takes the exact same panel as a C180 and because of that looks so bad because it lags the stance and the wide shoulders
For a "small" car competing with the M2 I think it's not too outrageous... However I notice they're selling an E63S "Final Edition" now though, and this has me extremely worried about what may come with the next generation of large AMGs. As a 63 driver, the V8 soundtrack is undoubtedly its raison d'être - more so than its speed or power - and without it I suspect I'd honestly be happier and less frustrated in a mid-range Volvo than something so devoid of aural passion like this thing
476 HP from a 2.0 Turbo engine is incredible. Imagine unveiling a car with that engine in say the 1980s. Only the largest engines in the maddest of sports cars could have compared.
Yep, that brake peddle is the one consistent gripe with every single reviewer. Mercedes better fix that fast because some reviewers are saying it's a deal breaker.
That was my experience with the brake pedal in the loaner c300 i got. I was overall super disappointed in the car - Mercededs failed to do the things they should get right - and had been doing well.
Tim, what kind of watch is that? I've seen you wearing it in other videos and I am stumped. It almost looks like a see through or transparent case. Thanks.
An AMG is something you need to want….. something that’s chaos, the sound. Unfortunately this doesn’t tick any of them boxes. You may as well buy the old models, and buy a regular C class if you want the tech.
Yea, i recently drove a A-class hybrid of a colleague. Had the exact same experience with the brakes. At first nothing happens, then way to much. Also very inconsistent Pedal feel. It was so bad, my passenger actually asked, if i forgot how to drive lol
I had a loan 206 c300 for 2 weeks, and after this period, I found the pedal ok. Had the loan c300 while my e class had the engine removed due to brake failure. This was a recall caused by an o ring leaking coolant into the vacuum lines and stopping the brakes from working. The car won't stop at junctions, had to shift into P. The engine needed to be removed to change the tandem vacuum/ oil pump. I have a c300 petrol mild hybrid on order.
Number of cylinders matters not to me, its how the car makes you feel that matters. The car industry has conditioned us to associate number of cylinders to the status of the vehicle. This car is some much more technically advanced that the older V8 models, but personally it leaves me cold.
Wish I could remember the guy who predicted that "tiny, cheap, crap ICE engines will be added to EV motors to generate big profits". This seems just that same formula. The E-ray is getting heat but at least it has a legit V8 powerplant as the base. I cannot ever see the Patina Collection Museum importing one from Europe in 20 years for their displays. It lacks the charm and gravitas of an AMG.
What if the battery is depleted ? It just becomes a heavy 2.0 sedan, with bad consumption. If I buy a car with 680PS I assume I can use it all the time,
Great video cheers! Sums up my thoughts entirely! This is sounds (not the car noise) a lot like the V60 Polestar Engineered I have just got rid of. Obviously this is quicker but in terms of modes and behaviour very similar. I have just ditched it and gone back to the C63s V8 Bi-turbo. Sorry it just isn't the same. It's actually heavier than a V60.... and that is heavy! You'll be lucky to get 10-15miles on full electric on that. Again the braking sounds very similar to that experience on the Polestar, really didn't get on with those.. It's not a difficult thing, it's a terrible thing. Mistake.
Nice review! The winter tyres remind me of the Car Wow video with the Tesla Model X Plaid under braking. Not the best tyres for braking and outright stability. This also means you need to do this test drive again in the summer with its sticky summer tyres to get a final review. 🙊🙊😅
The C63 S was begging for the turbo inline 6 cylinder. Drop the battery stuff and it would be 200 lbs lighter and still make well over 500 hp. Very rare time where absolute most power is not the best option.
If this had been a six cylinder it would have been acceptable, if they'd called the four cylinder a C45 It would have been acceptable, but calling a four cylinder car a "63" is just downright disrespectful.
The reason I love the c-class is that it is relatively light, and it can be thrown around easily. The electrification has made the C-63 heavier. A C43 is where the lightness can be had.
How maintaining this would be hard, for such performance you can hear the small engine working so hard I doubt it would keep up with the demand of an amg driver. Then the tech when it goes wrong I can't even imagine the bill I genuinely believe a 3.0 6 cylinder from the previous c43 would've been the better downsize and a faster car that handles the compromise better
For me it's the actual design that fell short of what we know AMG is capable of. As someone who was waiting for this launch to upgrade my car i think i'll go for an S65
What’s controversial? Amgs always handled poorly, now with an extra 400kg it will handle like shit, that power isn’t available all the time so you could end up with 2.1 ton 4 cylinder car, doesn’t look great, cheap plastic interior..
Very heavy, the power is not 100% of the time, besides for my personal taste it is very ugly especially the interior with these exaggerated screens! But the content on channel, great as always
The carbon emissions created by making the batteries that go into the hybrid system means that the whole point in making the car a smaller hybrid engine is completely pointless! And they have lost the AMG V8 character
The company that used to make masterpieces such as "Gull-wing" and "The Hammer" is now about to give up their own heritage. Mercedes fanboys aren't just upset that the new c63 is hybridized. This is due to the addition of a "63" badge to the 2.0 4-cylinder engine, not the V8. Seriously, Its not just about numbers. Anyone who has ever driven an AMG will never forget the intense sound and rich acceleration of the v8. Today's Mercedes-Benz is not only losing their v8 spirit of Affalterbach, but also erasing their driving feelings themselves. What a shame on German car industry today
they're saying its the most performance thanks to that 4 cyl. But reality is , there will always be faster cars. it's about the feeling you get, and c63 has always been about the rumbly engines sounds. They killed it. Should have just changed the name tbh.
Change is always hard but in this case i think the mood of the room is correct. Electric cars have democratised high performance so this type of car needs to excel in other areas. Quality, luxury, styling, sound, handling, utility, features. It doesn't seem to leap the pack in any one of these areas other than lap times.

Imagine a W204 C63 with this interior and tech 😙
would have liked some outside rev's to hear the 4 cilincder. otherwise great video!
There probably isn't anything to hear
Wouldn’t say that it’s “more aggressive” at all, looks quite tame in comparison to previous models actually
I was comparing to a regular C Class
They didn't change the rear wheel arches, that looks like a regular C class now...
Absolutely agree! Looks like any normal saloon on the road. My friend has the 2008 version, which looks immense!
looks a way better and modern than the previous model
@@lilmoesieable no it doesn’t, not even close
Might have been totally missed in the debate but notice how on the old C63 the rear wheel arch was flared out and much wider than the stock c-class. Notice how this one literally takes the exact same panel as a C180 and because of that looks so bad because it lags the stance and the wide shoulders
Yep cost cutting!
I love how noone is showing us how it really sounds…
For a "small" car competing with the M2 I think it's not too outrageous... However I notice they're selling an E63S "Final Edition" now though, and this has me extremely worried about what may come with the next generation of large AMGs. As a 63 driver, the V8 soundtrack is undoubtedly its raison d'être - more so than its speed or power - and without it I suspect I'd honestly be happier and less frustrated in a mid-range Volvo than something so devoid of aural passion like this thing
C63 always means the glorious 6.2 M156 what a beast of an engine that is
Let's be real if you can afford one of these as your daily, you can also afford a fun loud v8 as your weekend car 🤷♂️
No V8 no party. I'll be keeping my W205 C63S Coupe thank you very much.
Mercedes really cares about their clients. Current c63 values skyrocket while not having the “want” or “need” to spend extra on the new one haha.
Gotta appreciate the first 5 minutes of just one long camera shot, no breaks, no mistakes, smoothly and nice. Props to Shmee.
680hp is pretty incredible. Hybrid done right IMO. Even then, it's a lot of money for a 4 cylinder.
Tycane does not have an engine and its an incredible car
476 HP from a 2.0 Turbo engine is incredible. Imagine unveiling a car with that engine in say the 1980s. Only the largest engines in the maddest of sports cars could have compared.
Mitsubishi had that 10 years ago
@@alexbramm8526Yeah but you had to service it every 3 months, might as well been a rally car engine
Been waiting for this one!!!
Tim, what kind of watch is that? I've seen you wearing it in other videos and I am stumped. It almost looks like a see through or transparent case. Thanks.
I have yet to see _ANYONE_ taken a liking towards the C63S ePerformance. I guess AMG really ballsed it up on this one...
Long live the 4.0 litre bi turbo, will never forget
im with you shmee… the technologie behind that car is very impressive, but there are no emotions coming from a 4 cylinder.
The Final edition W205 C63s will be 🚀
An AMG is something you need to want….. something that’s chaos, the sound. Unfortunately this doesn’t tick any of them boxes. You may as well buy the old models, and buy a regular C class if you want the tech.
All new c class cars have that funny braking feel. I think it's the re-gen.
I have the new C Estate and still struggle to get used to the braking after 6 months. Very unpredictable
I've had a lot of 2 liter 4 cyl cars, but they only had 1/4 of that power! 🤯
How would you compare it to the G80 m3 competition speed wise ?
What a mad world we live in...476hp from that 4cylinder, number that was attainable 20years ago with the fabulouse M113K supercharged V8 😎
looks like the AMG V8 bout to sky rocket on prices...
In the rear you have to double press that “tray” thing to make the cup holders pop out. 👌
What if the battery is depleted ? It just becomes a heavy 2.0 sedan, with bad consumption. If I buy a car with 680PS I assume I can use it all the time,
What a shame... 4 cylinders in a c63 :/ great review !
Tbh what’s the incentive to buy an AMG now? The V8 was their selling point.
It's just me or the new C E and S look so much more similar than the previous gen?
I agree. I honestly can’t tell the difference when I see them on the road
The C63 S was begging for the turbo inline 6 cylinder. Drop the battery stuff and it would be 200 lbs lighter and still make well over 500 hp. Very rare time where absolute most power is not the best option.
i thought they would go toward the e53 amg 6 cylinder...that thing is plenty powerful but they chose this path which is baffling
Man, it is 800lb heavier than the M3
"I don't know how to put it into words"
As Harry Enfield would say, "OI - AMG! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
I have to agree with you, Tim. There are other ways Mercedes can be in compliance without removing the soul of AMG.
Very Good Content
I have always been a fan of the E55 with that blower whine
More efficient, quieter and even more powerful, seems like a win-win-win to me, what's controversial about that?
“efficient and quite” in a sentence with c63 are you crazy.
Hey shmee, you rock brother, 🇨🇦
I'm never selling my 2021 C 63 S for this reason. Only exception would be if they brought the V8 back for a C 63 black series
The engine is the heart & soul. It would have 1000hp, but it's pointless if it has no soul.
exactly...thats what these manufacturers dont get
Good video! Good ole Tim.
The carbon emissions created by making the batteries that go into the hybrid system means that the whole point in making the car a smaller hybrid engine is completely pointless! And they have lost the AMG V8 character
Would be interesting to get a direct comparison of lifetime emissions for the vehicle
there whole goal is to produce the pollution elsewhere so it is not in your neighborhood
Its all just a fugazi. The 2.0 Liter shitbox with 400 + Hp will explode before the System could ever make any ecological sense :>
I may be fast, but the dashboard looks like a child has glued a pair of iPads to it, and it sounds like a Golf GTI.
NOT AMG money!
Great video!
Thanks!
You haven't even watched it ...
@@Jens_Roadster I did. And agree. It’s not what a c63 should be.
I’m sticking with my C63 Black Series and my C63s Final Edition.
Modern Mercedes and AMG cars will never be naturally looked back on as their classics from the past.
Mt dad has a 2019 C43 AMG Convertible and that Twin Turbo V6 is perfect
Thank you for your honesty 😊
6.2 has a special place in my heart
U stick with my v12 benz lol these 4cyc makes my v12 look super reliable
I think this is going to be the hardest car to tune. that's gonna be the challenge for tuners
