Back in the 60's before most of you were born, a magazine called Car and Car Conversions i think, took a good looking Ford Consul circa1960, and stripped it. The result was the car folded in the centre, the entire structure having been made by filler. In those pre test days it was common practice....and the results were horrific. Ever since then, i always preffered to buy rot i could see, then repair it. This brings back the devious minds of some people with no scruples. Nice content though.

That is a car that should be acid dipped to remove everything that isn't steel. Rust, bondo, paint, everything. Don't know if they have such a facility in the UK, but having owned a '61 and '63 Mini, they need one!! Good luck with the repairs. Dipping them strips all the protection from seams.. causes mayhem as you can't fully protect the seams afterwards which rust starts bleeding from.. sandblasting is far better as long as the person doing it knows about sandblasting cars

@@scotty281976 I watched a few acid dip videos here on YT. Some folks want it delivered in bare steel. The rest go for an extra dip into some kind of a preservation fluid that obviously coats *everything*. That 914 needs an "everything"!!

Just need to be mindful of not heating the metal too much. Saves on getting an inch thick layer of dust on everything in the unit.

THIS OLD VW BUS HAD plaster'es edge beading hammerd to a rough shape and i si""t you not cement / underbody seal for a main chassy and the body remined me of this day i had to tell the poor guy he had just bought the most expensive polished freaking lemon on earth .
. the saddest thing to be honest was the thing had a flooked engine [ it ran in 3 of the 4 cylinders but i never had the heart to tell him .
I JUST GAVE HIM A WRITTEN REPORT 3 A4 SHEATS LONG . and told him to take it back . 2 weeks later this guy returned to my garage and gave me a bottle of johnywalker black label .

Hey Ryan, yet another rusty rabbit hole that you are taking us down. I find it amazing that a car like that was roadworthied at all, how unsafe for the occupants. You guys do brilliant work, it’s a pleasure to see. Scheme needs some financial compensation from the seller. Your are not leaving much for tha sand blaster, I would be worried that it will blow apart, that would make a stunning video. I agree with others about the dust collection. I have a large vacuum dust collector for my woodwork hobby. Attached to that is a big mouth Shute so I imagine that you could have one mounted on a stand that you move nearby to suck the dust rather than putting the health of everyone at risk when the shop is to be cleaned, you’re handling the crap a few times now. What a journey, thanks for sharing.

A family of mice had made a home under the rocker! I ended up getting it bent back to shape on a jig and welded by one of two; ... that's right two people who could really do this in the US at the time; .. apparently. The shifting of these cars is so compromised it ruins the driving experience. I have no idea how they raced them. For me it was not worth restoring, although its modded OEM engine had 210hp and was pretty fun. I sold it, it went to Hong Kong and I DON'T miss it. I had a 930 and laterly a '71T .. both more enjoyable

That is the type of bondo which is used a lot in the states, i had a Black 2.0 4 cylinders and the doors would not shut properly because the car due to rust, had lost its structural integrity and that was in 1992!, i also brought a BMW 3.0 CS COUPE, Just like the orange one they've got in the garage, that was even worse then the Porsche, of course both cars were built by Karmann and there were a lot of rumours at the time that KARMANN was using really cheap ungalvanised steel at the time, still i wish i kept the 914 as it was like a go - cart... endless fun

Did the dry ice help with the removal of sound deadening on the floor? It looked like you still had to bash it quite a lot.

Too bad you don’t have a separate tear down area or bldg.to keep some of the dust, dirt, etc.off the other cars.great video as always,y’all definitely have your work cut out for you.curious,yo still have your full time day job,or just in the shop.do not understand what possessed people to do all that work instead of fixing it right.the time spent had to be unbelievable to do what they did.great job.just continue doing your thing.😎😎😎👍👍👍

well I cant say I'm surprised, as it made no sense for it to be sagging that bad that the doors didnt line up unless their was some seriously bodged work underneath, as part of this cars appeal is that the targa acts as a roll over hoop, and is heavily structural to the car
and while their was alot wrong with these cars back in the day, well really three things, the fuel injection coming unplugged, a really bad shifter feel, thanks to the original VW bus linkage that they fixed for a better unit in 72
and poorly done window fit and finish, where it breaks windows when you close the door, three times
they generally, oh and it leaks oil, but that might have been something else, arent that bad'
as long as you get a sorted one, and did schmee get that message I sent him about the magazine article you guys really need to read for when this thing gets back on the road
as it has a solution to the cutting on and off problem they had, that plagued the line from 69 to 75

Brilliant idea to freeze the Porsche sound deadening! That stuff was hard as a rock, but did not really seal from water, so water gets in, does not drain, and rust it goes! I spent days removing that #$!#&* crude from mine in the day. I may or may not have done a controlled burn of this stuff that is all through the roll bar…

I'm far from a panel beater but even I would be ashamed to have done that work. No excuse at all for that much bog on the panels. This is a good example of why you need an electronic paint thickness gauge to inspect any car you intend to buy.

Having two old ‘69 Italian classics, I appreciate the desire to own a classic car, but unless the values of a 914 Porsche has significantly increased to a level where it’s worthwhile restoring, given the real condition of this one, it must be borderline to not being financially viable to restore. So much filler, so much rust. The hrs that are going to be required to restore this properly and cost I can only imagine will be significant.
    Good luck with this one.

  • @jeff1176

If whoever did that repair had done it right the first time round, it would have been cheaper in the long run. Man hours working all that mud and the cost for the filler it would have had less time and labor cost. I've seen work like that done here in the states. It's been a while but I've seen whole wings made out of the stuff and very little metal.

An arid/dessert origin car is always the best choice. Canada not so much. The amount of salt used to combat ice in the winter, just eats cars alive. Next time Tim will look in Arizona, Nevada, southern Cal., etc. An "actual" good choice would not have looked so pretty with the paint job and all, but it would've been essentially rust-free.

  • @davidbarnsley8486

I would rather see a bad weld than filler over rust and holes.
And then those panels don't look bad, only the repairs - well hidden holes really. So why not just fix those repairs and simply build up a high fill primer instead. Bizarre.
