Dipping them strips all the protection from seams.. causes mayhem as you can't fully protect the seams afterwards which rust starts bleeding from.. sandblasting is far better as long as the person doing it knows about sandblasting cars

what I don't understand is the metal doesn't look terribly off - why the gallons of body filler? Like the patch attempts were horrible - but there weren't that many. (on the exterior. The interior is a nightmare.)
I think they are mainly focusing on the corrosion they are seeing, who ever did the body work and paint on it previously didn’t replace the door skins or the sheet metal they just put filler over the rust and painted over it.
Imagine how much time it took to sand that entire mass of filler ready for paint- it looked really good on camera. Great video, makes me feel exhausted just watching!

Ever thought about rolling it outside to strip the paint and filler?? Given that it has been blowing a gale and raining off and on here in the UK that should help in the elimination of any dust.

At first I thought this car didn’t look too bad but, boy, what a mess! I suspect a 914 in our family will need similar attention.
At today's prices, most people simply couldn't afford that much filler on just one car. I'm also concerned at the condition of some of the metal surface under the filler, as it doesn't appear to have been appropriately treated beforehand. What a mess, not to mention lugging all that extra weight around. Looking forward to seeing this repaired properly, the way it should have been done the first time.
I had a 914-6 for many years. It had a bit of rust; they all do, I ended up bending it when I used the jacking point to work on the brakes. I jacked the car up and crunch! A family of mice had made a home under the rocker! I ended up getting it bent back to shape on a jig and welded by one of two; ... that's right two people who could really do this in the US at the time; .. apparently. It's so bizarre, I see no reason to have so much filler all over. The outer panels seem to be mostly "fine" (as in no massive dents and rust issues) outside of the ugly patch in the corner of that rear wing.
I knew as soon as he said it was originally a Canadian Car, Rust Rust Rust. Buy from California or Arizona or Texas. Deserts equal no rust trouble. Now about that filler WTH.
From the appearances after using the DA, it looked fairly straight. Despite the awful rusty patch jobs the wings look decent. The outer skin is there the inner is awful. Underneath will be way worse.
I think you ought to make a room up , specifically for doing this job on cars that have so much filler on them , just to keep the dust contained to one room .don’t you think it makes sense ,god look at the dust floating around 😂😂😂
Acid dip. saves hours and removes filler in a shorter period of time. The bit that gets me is that someone down the line paid huge bucks for a 'high quality' restoration and paint and got totally turned over.
What is it you are using to strip the paint and the filler off? I used very successfully the Bristle disc from 3 M. But the green one is still ruined rel fast….
That is the type of bondo which is used a lot in the states, i had a Black 2.0 4 cylinders and the doors would not shut properly because the car due to rust, had lost its structural integrity and that was in 1992!, i also brought a BMW 3.0 CS COUPE, Just like the orange one they've got in the garage, that was even worse then the Porsche, of course both cars were built by Karmann and there were a lot of rumours at the time that KARMANN was using really cheap ungalvanised steel at the time, still i wish i kept the 914 as it was like a go - cart... endless fun
Too bad you don’t have a separate tear down area or bldg.to keep some of the dust, dirt, etc.off the other cars.great video as always,y’all definitely have your work cut out for you.curious,yo still have your full time day job,or just in the shop.do not understand what possessed people to do all that work instead of fixing it right.the time spent had to be unbelievable to do what they did.great job.just continue doing your thing.😎😎😎👍👍👍
well I cant say I'm surprised, as it made no sense for it to be sagging that bad that the doors didnt line up unless their was some seriously bodged work underneath, as part of this cars appeal is that the targa acts as a roll over hoop, and is heavily structural to the car and while their was alot wrong with these cars back in the day, well really three things, the fuel injection coming unplugged, a really bad shifter feel, thanks to the original VW bus linkage that they fixed for a better unit in 72 and poorly done window fit and finish, where it breaks windows when you close the door, three times they generally, oh and it leaks oil, but that might have been something else, arent that bad' as long as you get a sorted one, and did schmee get that message I sent him about the magazine article you guys really need to read for when this thing gets back on the road as it has a solution to the cutting on and off problem they had, that plagued the line from 69 to 75
Brilliant idea to freeze the Porsche sound deadening! That stuff was hard as a rock, but did not really seal from water, so water gets in, does not drain, and rust it goes! I spent days removing that #$!#&* crude from mine in the day. I may or may not have done a controlled burn of this stuff that is all through the roll bar…
I'm far from a panel beater but even I would be ashamed to have done that work. No excuse at all for that much bog on the panels. This is a good example of why you need an electronic paint thickness gauge to inspect any car you intend to buy.
Having two old ‘69 Italian classics, I appreciate the desire to own a classic car, but unless the values of a 914 Porsche has significantly increased to a level where it’s worthwhile restoring, given the real condition of this one, it must be borderline to not being financially viable to restore. So much filler, so much rust. The hrs that are going to be required to restore this properly and cost I can only imagine will be significant. Good luck with this one.
If whoever did that repair had done it right the first time round, it would have been cheaper in the long run. Man hours working all that mud and the cost for the filler it would have had less time and labor cost. I've seen work like that done here in the states. It's been a while but I've seen whole wings made out of the stuff and very little metal.
.....Just to add....an unusual car in an unusual colour. It shouldn't be too hard to find out who did all this bodging and painted over it. Anyone....?
As per other comments.. my god, get a vacuum system... yes, you have a mask on, but the other guys in the same space dont ... this is just horrific for lungs! Btw, absolutely love the channel! Just please look into proper dust management 🙏
An arid/dessert origin car is always the best choice. Canada not so much. The amount of salt used to combat ice in the winter, just eats cars alive. Next time Tim will look in Arizona, Nevada, southern Cal., etc. An "actual" good choice would not have looked so pretty with the paint job and all, but it would've been essentially rust-free.
This is why you always take a small magnet with you to test the panels for filler on an older car That is the worst thing I have ever seen in my life 😮😮😮
I would rather see a bad weld than filler over rust and holes. And then those panels don't look bad, only the repairs - well hidden holes really. So why not just fix those repairs and simply build up a high fill primer instead. Bizarre.

In all the restorations I’ve watched I’ve never seen the camera lense cleaned so much!
Question: What does the dry ice do? Easier to chip away the sound deadening?
Freezes it so it is brittle and chips off (rather than being soft and difficult to chip off)
holy cow rian !! this one is giving the disater datsun a run for it's money !!
Why not use paint stripper?
Acid dip. saves hours and removes filler in a shorter period of time. The bit that gets me is that someone down the line paid huge bucks for a 'high quality' restoration and paint and got totally turned over.
I’m pleased to see you’re all mucking in. It’s otherwise a dispiriting job.
Genuine question. Does all that dust damage the other cars in the shop or get in paint when respraying? Is there anyway of reducing the dust?
I bet the other guys in the workshop love it when you're making it snow. At least the car will be a tad lighter after that has all gone.
another great vid! any reason you didn't use a chemical paint stripper (like nitro mors)? just curious.
It doesn’t remove filler.
What is it you are using to strip the paint and the filler off? I used very successfully the Bristle disc from 3 M. But the green one is still ruined rel fast….
Is there any merit to the heat gun/blowtorch method for removing filer? I have to do somo of that, And I've seen videos claiming is faster/less messy
That is the type of bondo which is used a lot in the states, i had a Black 2.0 4 cylinders and the doors would not shut properly because the car due to rust, had lost its structural integrity and that was in 1992!, i also brought a BMW 3.0 CS COUPE, Just like the orange one they've got in the garage, that was even worse then the Porsche, of course both cars were built by Karmann and there were a lot of rumours at the time that KARMANN was using really cheap ungalvanised steel at the time, still i wish i kept the 914 as it was like a go - cart... endless fun
Did the dry ice help with the removal of sound deadening on the floor? It looked like you still had to bash it quite a lot.
A shop vac can be your best friend sometimes 😊
just curious any reason why you don't use paint stripper for specific areas?
Too bad you don’t have a separate tear down area or bldg.to keep some of the dust, dirt, etc.off the other cars.great video as always,y’all definitely have your work cut out for you.curious,yo still have your full time day job,or just in the shop.do not understand what possessed people to do all that work instead of fixing it right.the time spent had to be unbelievable to do what they did.great job.just continue doing your thing.😎😎😎👍👍👍
You need a containment aria with extraction. The lads will be fuming when they see Elsa has been making snow every where.
well I cant say I'm surprised, as it made no sense for it to be sagging that bad that the doors didnt line up unless their was some seriously bodged work underneath, as part of this cars appeal is that the targa acts as a roll over hoop, and is heavily structural to the car
and while their was alot wrong with these cars back in the day, well really three things, the fuel injection coming unplugged, a really bad shifter feel, thanks to the original VW bus linkage that they fixed for a better unit in 72
and poorly done window fit and finish, where it breaks windows when you close the door, three times
they generally, oh and it leaks oil, but that might have been something else, arent that bad'
as long as you get a sorted one, and did schmee get that message I sent him about the magazine article you guys really need to read for when this thing gets back on the road
as it has a solution to the cutting on and off problem they had, that plagued the line from 69 to 75
Brilliant idea to freeze the Porsche sound deadening! That stuff was hard as a rock, but did not really seal from water, so water gets in, does not drain, and rust it goes! I spent days removing that #$!#&* crude from mine in the day. I may or may not have done a controlled burn of this stuff that is all through the roll bar…
Like a Tim Burton horror film….
Best comment! 😂
Wouldn't be surprised if Helen Bonham Carter made an appearance.
I'm far from a panel beater but even I would be ashamed to have done that work. No excuse at all for that much bog on the panels. This is a good example of why you need an electronic paint thickness gauge to inspect any car you intend to buy.
Yeh first makes a change ayup Ryan 👍🏻😉🇬🇧
Would sandblasting and/or chemical stripping be an alternative to all that grinding off of filler?
I know your not big about dipping cars but this would have been a good candidate.
Skim Coat 😂
Best performance mod 👍 lightening the car 😝
Bloody hell this looked a half decent shell before you started stripping it back, that is some serious amounts of filler and crap repairs
If whoever did that repair had done it right the first time round, it would have been cheaper in the long run. Man hours working all that mud and the cost for the filler it would have had less time and labor cost. I've seen work like that done here in the states. It's been a while but I've seen whole wings made out of the stuff and very little metal.
The guy who sculpted patches out of Bondo is a true artist. From what I understand he left the body shop to pursue his love of frosted cakes.. Hà ha
WOW!!
Really wanted acid dipping.....but it's so bad that even the dippers might turn it away if they'd taken the precaution of running a magnet over it.
.....Just to add....an unusual car in an unusual colour.
This is why you always take a small magnet with you to test the panels for filler on an older car
That is the worst thing I have ever seen in my life 😮😮😮
Not sandblasting the outside to save getting warped panels was definitely worth it 😂
I'm just trying to imagine the effect of all that extra weight of the filler on the vehicle's performance! 🤣Utterly insane!!
The guy that did that body filler goes by the name “Bondo James Bondo”😂 omg!
You need a seperate shed and an air fed mask for that, you've a heart like a lion taking it on
And the dry ice just evaporates. How long do you let it freeze?
Was the prior owner a sculptor? This looks like an art project.
You should have got a stone mason in to get rid of that amount of filler.
He did use a lump hammer and chisel on one of their other projects.
How much the body is lighter after cleaning than before? Might be big difference.
I would rather see a bad weld than filler over rust and holes.
And then those panels don't look bad, only the repairs - well hidden holes really. So why not just fix those repairs and simply build up a high fill primer instead. Bizarre.
