    I checked this boat out in Annapolis. The galley is to die for!

  • @Morrisfactor
    @Morrisfactor 4 месяца назад +15

    Tim - that boat was right across from us (on the hard) for the past two years at Port Annapolis Marina as we were rebuilding our boat. It is certainly impressive. It does need some updating, as you pointed out, and the shortened mast might make it Intercoastal friendly but also means she is probably in the motorsailor realm with the low sail area to displacement ratio she surely carries. I think she has not sold simply due to being too expensive - and for that much money many people would chose a big catamaran. For those sailors who are adventurous, Soolaimon's sistership is in Greece asking just $125K - but it has been on the hard there since 2019 and needs a major overhaul of most systems (but does have the taller mast).

      You have info on the sister ship listing?

    • @Morrisfactor
      @Morrisfactor 4 месяца назад +1

      @@sterlingarcher1962 It is listed at Yacht Worl. (can't give you the link or YT will drop my reply) and is in Kala, Greece. It has been for sale for at least two years, just recently dropped the price. It has a taller mast with internal furling instead of boom furling. It is not nearly as nice as the boat in the video but a great bargain if you are good at rebuilding an older boat. Those pictures are several years old now, so I'd demand new photos! I'd consider it myself except we're almost done rebuilding a Hollmann 52 and eager to go cruising.

    Thanks for a great boat tour! Personally I’d love to see more like this - used cruising boat walkthroughs with your insights in the good and bad parts. I can go to Annapolis to see all the new boats but it’s impractical to tour the many great used boats out there. It would be awesome to wrap a video like this up with a YachtWorld spin through one or two alternatives in the same price range and your commentary on which way you’d go. Great job!

    I'd so much rather have this boat than a 40-something foot catamaran in the same price range. Every big cat I've been on just feels a tiny bit flimsy and the decor screams of "how cheaply can I fill up this big space?" This boat is the exact opposite of that.

    Interesting change of pace to see a no-expense-spared boat. I'm interested in the idea of how older folks can continue to sail. It's nice to know what can be done, even if it costs a lot.
    If you run across another boat, say in the 30-40' range, that is set up for easy sailing by one or two people, I'd love to see a tour. And I'd like to see more about how reliable all this machinery is. Electric winches, electric furling, etc. How often do they jam or stop working? Can an older person really keep sailing, or should they do what most do, which is buy a trawler or stop boating altogether?

    Thanks for a great review! Spent a couple of hours on that boat. The nav stuff must be totally refitted. I'm a bit concerned about the in-boom furler. The boom must be absolutely perpendicular to a mast in order to properly furl the main, which could be a bit challenging in rough seas. My biggest concern is natural lights inside

    Nice cheap boat. Lots of nicer boats locally here in Maine. They just splashed a Hinckley 70 ketch that is definitely a go anywhere in ultimate style boat that can be sailed by two people, although the two people doing the sailing would likely be the captain and crew. Not going to get that boat for $500K though. I do approve of the Andersen winches since I have Andersen electric winches on my boat.

    For sure a nice boat to live on an probably sails great , pretty sure anyone buying it for half a mill would want another half to keep it up over ten or twenty years ect... changing the lights out , getting rid of most because of led now is no big deal , servicing that engine looks like one though , alot of unknowns like access to thruhulls and for me how robust are the inboom inmast furlings ect... sails pretty much always go up an down in good weather or at the dock , it's in a squall or worse that their bad habits become apparent and even a couple of young strong sailors would be hard pressed to deal with that mainsail jamming or worse when it starts gusting sixty knots , have no idea how an old couple would deal with that , lay a hull hope for the best ? for me it's like buying a rolls royce for twenty thousand an finding out the reason it was sold is because it costs a half mill to get it back on the road

    Do you think 42' is the high water mark for a couple to handle safely, or is that just the sweet spot for space, comfort, and budget??? I'm looking in the $250k range, and having chartered a few boats, I don't think a 42 has enough toy storage. I'm looking in the 46-55 range. Is this unsafe when it starts getting spicy out there for 2 people?

      Ever seen the Dashews even larger Beowulf .... epic.. Aluminium ketch rigged explorer .. built for a couple to sail the oceans whilst drinking tea at speeds over twenty kn.
      It depends how it's done.. plus Beowulf has pumped outboard water ballast tanks and batteries in the keel.
      Given the slight detail changes pointed out this boats very nice indeed... If not my cuppa directly. Still too much like a submarine.
      I suspect those cockpit side cutaways have drop in surge prevention boards/gates for when she gets heeled over in the rough.

      42’ starts to feel small real fast except when docking without a bow thruster. It really depends on what you will be using it for (day/weekend cruising or full time cruising).
      We have a Catalina 42 and it’s almost perfect for coastal/bay week long sailing. I’d want bigger for comfortable full time (month or more away from home) cruising.
      Everyone has an opinion and none are wrong😉
