Damon Stoudamire (31pts/11asts/6threes) vs. Bulls (1996)

  • The rookie Mighty Mouse records his then career-high in points by leading his expansion Raptors to a win against the 72-10 Bulls. Stoudamire always feasted on the slower Ron Harper and Steve Kerr (some stats at the end of this description), but this time around he also got Michael Jordan. Damon wasn't fazed by MJ's mind games of not raising his hand to contest the shot or setting off for the fast break altogether before the shot is released. Stoudamire had an impressive and Stephen Curry-like 6 for 8 on three pointers, to boot.
    Here are Damon's first eight games (first two seasons in Toronto) against Chicago: 22pts/10asts, 20pts/13asts, 26pts/12asts, 30pts/11asts (this game), 31pts/13asts (also a W), 26pts/11asts/12TOs, 18pts/12asts and 29pts/12asts (also uploaded on this channel).
    Those are averages of 25.2ppg, 11.7apg and 5.6rpg. Not too shabby..
    March 24, 1996.

    I just came here because Steve Kerr was asked about this game at a press conference. He said he remembers missing the last shot. Lol. Not only did he miss the last shot, he stole the ball from Jordan and had a good opportunity to give it back for the last shot! What was he doing?!

    I watched the raps at a kid starstruck and amazed but with no concept of basketball. Now that I watched this video, i realize how special Damon was.
    That first cross over against Mike is better than AI's. He did it in one move. Way more confidence in his execution and attack. His athleticism was very underrated.
    That two man game with big Oliver Miller at 2:00 shows how slick he can be when his athleticism doesn't get him the first step.
    Lastly, his shot release stupid fast.
    All of these things made him a terror to guard, especially back then when the game was so slow.

    I find it funny when commentators say that players in the 2010’s and 2020’s are more skilled than players from this era, when they learned from players from this era. Damon stodumire, Rod Strickland, and Mahmoud Abdul Rauf would have held their own against today’s guards, simply because it would not have been that hard to adapt to today’s pace and style of play.

  • @jegca

      There's still no way in hell this warriors team matches up with, let alone actually beats the bulls. I'm a Blazers fan so I'm neutral and can't stand Jordan as a person but...the old bulls are right. The game is made for offensive guards these days. Reinstitute hand checking and let's see how good the warriors really are.

    • @moeschizlac
      @moeschizlac 8 лет назад +3

      +James C Ron Harper would kill Curry offensively. Harper is bigger and stronger than the average point guard today( 6'6" 216 lbs). Name a point guard that big today. Bigger guards like Ron Harper, Payton, and etc. loved to post up the smaller guards back then. I don't see that anymore in the NBA today. Ron Harper would just back Curry down and Klay would have to help which would leave Jordan open. There would be alot of mismatches. That small ball shit didn't work in the 90's.

    • @jegca
      @jegca 8 лет назад +12

      Ron Harper
      2 of 8 for 7 points against an undersized PG, Damon Stoudamire. Again, you live in the world of hypotheticals, I look at history and facts...

      He was better than Kenny and Nick the quick, come on now? No not curry, best shooter ever.... But Damon was talent wise on par wit AI and Zeke. His situations and teammates were just wack. And unlike Iverson his coaches in Portland didn't give him the ball like Brendan Malone did. I don't know if he was a winner tho. He never played with a great 5. Sabonis was Fat. But if not for Shaq and Kobe, Damon could have a ring or two. Portland was nice 00-03

    Always coming back to this when they say Jordan would destroy certain current era players. I might even still have MJ as the true Goat, but Damon still proving/ed that players like Curry and Kyrie on the dribble would destroy MJ on defence. They were not clamping Damon ever and thats the PRIME Bulls team.

    • @notthatserious480

      You could say that Jordan was taught not to close out hard on the 3 cuz it wasn’t as wide spread as today. I think if Jordan had to clamp up curry with todays knowledge and how basketball is played he could.

    If there were more videos of Jordan being just a regular player, getting faked out, getting scored on relentlessly, ect. He wouldn't be the most massively fucking overrated athlete in the history of sports.

    • @dagameplayer
      @dagameplayer 5 месяцев назад

      how? no top defender can stop every defender in every play every night. That doesn't make them overrated. When it comes down to it these Raptor players made it to the NBA for a reason. They knew how to play the game very well, and on that night they showed it.
      Only thing posts like yours here shows is how little you actually respect the game itself thinking a superstar is supposed to just run over everyone else every night or they're overrated.
