  • YORK PARISH #18: HESLINGTON
Here’s a York parish I’ve been looking forward to for a very long time. Don’t be fooled by this intro, it might look a little too rural and bereft of anything to begin with but I can promise you that’s soon about to change. Welcome to Heslington, which is a village dominated by one major local landmark. Since the 1960s, the University of York has been located here. Complete with its 11 colleges spread over not just one but two campuses, the University of York is a research university centred around a massive lake and the magnificent Heslington Hall - by far the most iconic of the university’s building
There is a village here as well though - and we shouldn’t forget that Heslington had been an established settlement for many years before the University came along. It still has all the usual village features, like a pub or two, a shop and a post office and even a village hall. Its also got a church, which is of a type rarely seen in the UK.
Most of the walk here though is around the University and its colour coded zones. There are countless interesting features within it, so this doesn’t cover every last bit. Its had more than a few notable alumni over the years - too many to list - but seeing as we’re on RUclips, the name Tom Scott might ring a bell for you. He’s a fellow RUclips who makes stuff like I do, only far, far better than I ever could.
Mind you, he went to a good university. Let’s go and see how good it really is!

    Hi Andy
    Wow what interesting village.
    The University is huge.
    So many buildings.
    Including the lake..
Which is nice as it brings bit of nature into view...
Peaceful for students to take a stroll around..
Also the village shop post office, brings some custom students living near by..
Well done all that walking ..
    Thanks for vlog..

Ah so many happy memories in the late 80,s! Lived in a gorgeous old house in the village while owners went abroad for a year. Worked on campus for 4 years. So many friends there studying and working. Made friends with Italians and Canadians who were post docs there and they opened their homes to me in Italy. Good times.

I was part of Wentworth when I attempted my PhD. It's the only Postgraduate only college at the University. I was part of the Physics department studying Nuclear Structure! This was about 6 or 7 years ago now!
The Student Union building is more offices for the Student Union staff, sadly no bar or club! I think the University of Hull is one of the only ones with a dedicated nightclub on campus!
I do love all the little hidden quiet areas around the campus though!
I keep adding more to this comment, there's also King's Manor owned by the University in York city centre, it's a beautiful old medieval building!
I used to work in Charles XII when I was a student, and I can definitely recommend Brown's sandwiches and jacket potatoes, they are INCREDIBLE

Ah so you're a York alumni yourself! The list of people who've attended this is MENTAL. Would give Cambridge and Oxford a run for their money I reckon.
Yes, the Kings Manor was another building I earmarked for the Special Section, but I only had room for a couple. They probably own a crap ton more as well, there was a long list of them I found

Thanks Andy. Ive been hoping you'd get to Heslington, where my great great grandfather and his family lived and worked as a tailor. Very different now!

At one stage ( late 1970s/ early 80s) there were three banks plus the post office in the village!

Indeed, banks and post offices are like pubs. They seem to close frequently

I worked at the uni once for a sub contractor, best job I ever had, did sod all and got paid well, the security were an arse though and one of them almost knocked me down in his van, he was speeding, I will give the uni credit though as he got the sack after he made threats to me.Great video as ever, all the best my friend.

Well that was different and interesting. At one stage I started thinking it was like the varying zones on Crystal Maze!

With the length of the route, I reckon I earned about 2 minutes in the Crystal Dome :P

Funny. I had a feeling all along you were an educator. Yes student life on campus is fun but I am not sure my liver thanked me😂

Now you're talking - home territory for me. BTW the s is pronounced as a z. Worked there (Chemistry Labs in the 1960s) then did an MSc in the same labs in the late 1970s. In the early years we would swim in the lake.

Swimming? That'll be off limits these days I'd have thought, health and safety and all that

@@TheVillageIdiot no chance any more. Way back then the water was crystal clear with very little vegetation.
