  • Richard McMunn teaches you the difference between leadership and management. You may be asked this interview question during a manager, team leader or supervisor interview, so it's a great thing to understand!
    #leadershipandmanagemet #manager #leadershipskills
    WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT?
    “Leadership is the skill of getting people to willingly do something you need doing.”
    “Management is the process of dealing with or controlling resources and people.”
    The difference between leadership and management is that, LEADERSHIP is inspiring, motivating, and directing a team of people towards achieving a set goal, project, or objective.
    MANAGEMENT is making effective use of the resources, tools and people you have at your disposal to achieve the same goal, project or objective.
    To be effective, you need to have a strong balance of both leadership and management skills within any leadership or management role.

    The core idea/assumption in this video is GTD i.e. Getting things done, which is fine. In that context one could find/use many well known techniques, like Eisenhower Box. However, in 80:20 terms that would be the 20 part or less. In order to truly appreciate the difference in paradigms or mindsets John Maxwell’s 5 levels of leadership is a useful starting point. When contemplating change I would suggest the Iceberg Model of change. Those who have the mental capacity to reach the bottom i.e. the Mindset level will find the true answer. Finally, I strongly recommend Sue Dyer’s book “The Trusted Leader” (2022) as the best way to get there. The video is “You are here” sign but one needs a larger roadmap to understand where is that.

      Let’s imagine the same job being advertised by three different companies. The first one is struggling, the second one is improving, whilst the third one is excelling. Would three people in the same role in different organisations be doing the same job? In order to answer your question, let me just say that I see things from a different paradigm. I call it the Leadership Mindset, which is very different from the Management Mindset.

    Another amazing video, I have a question.
    So if a manager has these qualities that you explained as a leader, does it mean he is no longer called a manager or what do we call that person also if leadership is that important how will the organization run without management

    Weakness of trait leadership style and how they can be controlled

  • @It_is_common_sense
    @It_is_common_sense 6 месяцев назад

    Not my understanding - you can’t manage without influencing people and as a leader without any control you will achieve nothing. I’ve been a manager and director for over 30 years and studied leadership for 28 years and have a PhD in leadership and management.

    • @CareerVidz

      OK. Thank you for your input.

    • @It_is_common_sense
      @It_is_common_sense 6 месяцев назад

      No problem. I'm not being critical of the explaination given, I'm just offering my own experience and knowledge on the topic. An interesting one in this area is Collinson's notion of Blended Leadership, which suggests that what staff want from a leader is influence AND direction. This is another way that leadership and management interrelate in practice. This implies that a good leader or manager is someone who is self aware enough to know what the staff need and can deliver in the right way.
