  • Thelonious Monk was one of the founding fathers of modern jazz, alongside Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. His penchant for dextrously jarring improvisational performances brought him massive respect and critical acclaim around the world.
He helped chart a new course for music; while most pianists during the bebop era used their left hands to play sparse chords and their right hands to emphasize eight and sixteenth notes, Monk used both hands to create virtuosic solos and angular rhythms producing a playful and percussive sound.
His legacy is secured with a number of timelessly epic albums, including Brilliant Corners, Monk's Music and Straight, No Chaser. He is one of only five jazz musicians ever to be featured on the cover of Time magazine and five of his songs are in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
