I saw Monk performing live at Manchester Town Hall in 1964 when I was 16 years old and to this day it is the best concert I have ever attended. Although my musical taste these days tends to be classical and opera nothing can beat the true greats. Parker ,Monk ,Coltrane and Davis.
I too was born in '48 & was fortunate enough to hear Monk, Trane & so many other great artists in SF. Too young to get in the Workshop we did experience the intensity brought forth with memories of speaking to Trane & following Monk up Broadway in his quirky way. Cherished memories.

Inspirational solo by Charlie Rouse on this live performance. This is one of the best versions of Round Midnight that I have heard. Joe Gordon and Harold Land's solo's are tight as well.
People who don't know the tune respond to hearing it with interest. What was that tune? It really resonates with people, that feeling of sullen nostalgic romance with a lonely nod to it.
Round Midnight is Thelonious Monk's most famous composition. Written in the key of Eb Minor, the 6 flats in the key signature take some getting used to but the tune contains lots of interesting chord changes and harmonic movements. [PianoGroove]

"He played each note as though astonished by the previous one, as though every touch of his fingers on the keyboard was correcting an error and this touch in turn became an error to be corrected and so the tune never quite ended up the way it was meant to. Sometimes the song seemed to have turned itself inside out or to have been entirely constructed from mistakes… If Monk had built a bridge he’d have taken away the bits that considered essential until all that was left were the decorative parts - but somehow he would have made the ornamentation absorb the strength of the supporting spars so it was like everything was built around what wasn’t there. It shouldn’t have held together but it did and the excitement came from the way that it looked like it might collapse at any moment…"
If it wasn't for the excerpt from Haruki Murakami's new novel I would have never discovered this beautiful... I don't know how to describe it. More than a song; an experience.
My memories exist in the fifties with my dad and his friends talking about going to clubs in post-war European jazz clubs that welcomed them all as they discussed life and love and Jazz and the rhythmatic soothing and calming songs like this. I grew up with Ella, Duke and Miles. I enjoy all of these shared memories. Thank you
“‘Round Midnight” is Thelonious Monk’s best-known jazz composition and carries the grand distinction of being the most-recorded jazz standard written by any jazz musician. A solo version from 1957 is available on Thelonious Himself (1991, Orig. Jazz Classics 254). 10:01 [Jazz Standards]
I am in my late seventies. As a kid of 21, I lived around the corner from the Five-spot and frequented it as often as I could afford. Now, in my old age, I spend my days reading and doing some teaching, and I listen to classical music. Before dinner, however, I take a nice glass of g&t and listen to jazz. Lately, I've been playing this a great deal, so lush and melancholy, and so...HAROLD LAND. I find him to be a profound player and can't get enough of him. The ensemble work here--Charlie ROuse, and of course, Monk himself, are glorious!
I've just read about this man. Tapped on this here video.. I can already hear its an instant classic then bam a minute later.. not 1 but 2 adverts. Wtf man. I don't have any better ideas rn but this ain't it. Big love Monk. Thank you.
One more song .... and one more chapter from "Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage". @ MaChKuLjA - thanks for sharing this great song !!! @ Haruki Murakami - thanks for this great book !!! Greetings from Portugal.
You are most welcome. I actually uploaded it, to be able to access it anywhere, myself. But I am delighted that so many people are enjoying these tunes with me. Cheers!
Monk once said (mid 50's) that Herbie Nichols was the most "Out There" Pianist alive. He was wrong, he himself was. As for Herbie, I saw Monk outside the Workshop in '63 0r '64 and asked about Herbie. All he said was, "He kicked the bucket", then he went back in and started the next set. He was truly in a league of his own.
I dont understand about the composition or progression or stuff like that but i can tell you this. Who ever blow the sax (is it sax? It sounds heavier) got mad skill. Real focus, persistence, commitment. That's incredible
Harold Land’s solo!!❤️🙏🏾😭. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this solo. The way he plays around with the melody. I won’t even mention Monk the genius 😩😭. I was honestly born in the wrong era
9/2/22: I recall when I was about 11, my brother tried to introduce me to Thelonious Monk. Didn't listen much then, but Wow oh Wow, I listen now and always~
RIP to Monk he was a very Unique Piano player , when i learned of him in music class in school that is when i first heard of him, but I first heard him on youtube I think , Monk's music is still good in this era
One of his most popular compositions and sadly he never recieved proper royalties for this one. Bernie Hanighen ripped off a lot of talented black musicians. Hanighen's family should sign over royalties and give them back to Monk's family where they belong.
+DeMon Spencer honestly i think royaltys should never be passed on beyond the writer, his familly didnt write the music so why should they get money for something he wrote..?
Mint Trax That's pretty ridiculous. So the people that wrongfully deprived him of his money should get to keep it instead of giving it to his family because he's no longer alive to collect himself? And if you think artist shouldn't be able to pass ownership and royalties to their family, where should the money go? Who deserves to profit from this man's work? Record companies? Lawyers? Who? If I cheat someone out of 1 million dollars and they take me to court to collect, then that person dies before I get a ruling, are you saying I should get to keep that money that I came by dishonestly? Creative works are property. Just like someone who buys a house and leaves it to their children. Or Sam Walton leaving his children his controlling shares of Wal Mart stock. Copyright's do have an expiration date where the material is released into public domain. But that doesn't happen right when the artist dies. If we were talking about 4 or 5 generations removed I would probably agree with you, but in this instance we're talking about his wife and children. Of course they should be able to inherit his estate. Royalties included. Dishonesty should never be rewarded.
What a cut this is ... I've had this on vinyl for years and really must get it on the turntable for even more warmth and soulfulness. Great cover too, very much of the time.

Reminds me of being up late at night alone, peacefully contemplating on life....such a nice smooth and elegant sound.
So happy my 18year old son is onto Jazz. Feels like a coup to hear reference to Thelonious Monk. Yippee

There is cacophonous jazz. This is pure eligance.
I was married on what would have been Monk's 70th birthday. Didn't plan it that way but, it's a fact that always makes me smile.
