Been playing the upright for years-and I still marvel at the ease at which Larry Gales has mastered his instrument, to be as young as he is also; it just seems so different from what a lot of other cats were doing at that time! 1-3-24.
Un des plus beaux concerts de ce génie, à la tête d'un quartet aussi subtil que MONK, un ovni immortel, pur virtuose de l'intervalle musicale, j'ai vu cette vidéo plus de 20 fois et c'est toujours avec autant d'émotion
This Concert is the most important concert I ever attended: Amazing, transformative, chocking … I knew and loved only Dixieland before (and still do love Louis) but Monk really plays so true, no bs … Merci Thelonious ❤️
Man . . Thanks for posting this concert by one of the best jazz quartets the world has known, taking us into a most unique jazz dimension. I'm doing a slow, easy, funky bebop bounce down the street with Lulu Back in Town.
Really stunning. When I was in high school a slightly older woman I knew turned me on to Monk. I am grateful to her kindness to this day over 50 years later.
Ascolto jazz da 40 anni ho dovuto fare gavetta prima di capire il monaco poi mi è entrato come una spada nel cervello!!ma che cazzo di genio ha fatto diventare il piano una percussione!!❤
This is such a sweet melody.Sounds so simple, but when you peel it back, like an onion, there are lots of layers. MY MAN MONK. Thank you for this video. I have the lewie armstrong, miles davis, duke ellington, count basie ,dexter gordon AND A FEW OTHERS IN THE JAZZ ICONS SERIES. Loaned MONK and,WEATHER REPORT live at montreaux to a friend.Of course,i havent seen them since.
My teacher is having me transcribe Monk's solo. even though it isn't technically a complicated solo, the tight intervals make it rather difficult to decipher. I'm going to learn so much, though.
Perfect. How is monkman playing with that 10 pound rock on his finger. I have always loved lulus back in town AND,this is one of the if not the best LIVE versions i have ever heard.
When Monk first did this I practised the chorus for 3 months then played it in the local pub. Everybody started shouting,"Go away! Practice for 3 Years!" Then some friendly soul called out that it was a Jonathan & Darlene Edwards thing, so then I got a round of applause and was bought a few pints. Well, it's all a matter of taste so if you like shit 'chacun a son gout'.
whoa! i learned mr. monk's piano in highschool for a jazz test, and used the recording from It's Monk's Time for the notes. never thought i'd get to see them perform it live! how cool! thank you for the u/l
Interestingly enough Hendrix was a big fan of Rahsaan Roland Kirk. If you listen to the way Jimi voiced the blues you'll see why jazz composers and arrangers really dug his playing.
Btw, that double bass looks very the same as the one Charles Mingus used at the exact same place there Aula University in 1964, maybe that bass is the uni's own property?
first you gotta practice getting and keeping those fingers formed in the horrifyingly proper wrong position and proceed from there to correctly hit wrong notes, parts of the right notes or notes that suggest the right notes but aren't exactly it. With practice you could begin to feel the man and his unpolished brilliance.
would it be too much to ask that someone who even begins to understands Monk's music, and even presumes to understand a tiny bit of the man, could offer an evaluation of may be an epochal performance?
Monk is the epitomy of displacement! The man transcends time and space!
Underrated comment ...!!
A LOT of VG musicians couldn't play with him, found his music too complicated. Monk threw knuckleballs. Hit this thing! lol
One of the greatest jazz quartets in history.

Completely agreeing! And nobody applauds 😏
Just the right amount of dissonance if you listen carefully, especially the intro by Monk. That's genius, I love it !
This swings like crazy...all the way through. Ben Riley is superb on this, playing a limited drum set. And Monk keeps you in suspense...as always.
like monk said, when ya swinging; swing some more!
Very hard to swing in Monk tempo but he demanded it, yeah
Monk pieces are never boring, no matter what he played he brings life to it in abstraction
Fats Waller wrote this one!

I had the Straight no chaser cd in my car to work, listened to it four times a week a year long, kept being exciting to listen.

Snare, bass, hi hat, and cymbal. Perfect.
If I remember correctly, he didn't get all of his equipment delivered and that is the reason for the pared down drum set.
All Are Great Musicians.♫♪♫♫ Buy Wow, Larry Gales on Double Bass is SuperB, and so Cool.♫♪♫ Fantastic Solo. ♥ I Love It.!!! Thanks.
I could listen to Monk 24/7. Genius!
I once listened to Monk for 3 straight days, even while sleeping. Never got tired of it. Monk is like that.
Thelonious Monk is the definition of jazz.
But not the only one.
Larry is in dreamland when he takes his solo from min 7..🔥🎼😍
Really stunning. When I was in high school a slightly older woman I knew turned me on to Monk. I am grateful to her kindness to this day over 50 years later.
That bass solo knocks me out!
Such a lyrical solo. Simple yet complex and very elegant
Me too! Amazing.
Yep!
He does not even take a look at the neck XD

It’s a Fats Waller tune btw!
Something in this makes my heart ache.
It's the Blues
@@josephtravers777 Yes. Thanks for bringing me back to this on New Year's Day.
@@eshaibraheem4218 Monk always makes me smile. Happy New Year!
@@josephtravers777 You too!💃👐
Lulu was a prostitute who became a beloved madame in New Orleans.
I thought I knew of his music. Guess not this is outstanding.
Impossible not to feel UP lifted when listening to Monk
re discovering monk
his wrongness is just so right...!!!
loving every minute of this

Yeah, like that bit a 4:47.. and well, OK, most of it. Love to see how you did.
Tomas Jackson would love to see that transcription
A work of sublime genius.
Perfect.

Larry Gales one of the best to do it Rest in Peace.
Never gets old
Monk is definitely one of my favorites, true genius!

So clear and firmly direct with Rouse and firmly addled at the same time with Maestro Monk. The recording is great too!
as i stood watching the man, who was watching a man, i realised i was sitting, and then he began to play the perfect jazz on that piano
The concert is from the University Aula in Oslo. Large paintings by Edvard Munch on the walls there.
Paul Hoff Baltzersen I was wondering about that
Thank you for the info. We were just wondering what and where this was.
1 musical genius, 3 natural talents equal all original sound.
Monk was the biggest harmonic genius every time.
Monk was a dear man who could play like nobody else.
Ben Ryley! Damn man, you are so good!
Not the most underrated of course, , but the least unknown master bassist and drummer in jazz history :)))
Thank you Gentlemen. + R.I.P.
surely in the best bass ever category amongst other things....braaahhhhhhhoowmn
holy moly larry gales is too swingin
Holy cameoly
Such a simple melody, but one of my fave Monk standards
BEST "Lulu" ever! 2:03
I would have loved to see a post experience Hendrix make an album together with monk, one can only imagine....
while this is an interesting idea, hendrix would definitely need to hit the shed for a few years to play monk's bag...
Interestingly enough Hendrix was a big fan of Rahsaan Roland Kirk. If you listen to the way Jimi voiced the blues you'll see why jazz composers and arrangers really dug his playing.
He was well on his way to going that route and had the ear to pull it off 👍
@@danjv he was not tight enough to play with Monk sorry
@@presleyvelvet618 this aint by ear
this is a lifetime of theory
I was that time -2 years old. 😍
I wasn't even born at that time.
What's up? It's all coming out the right channel.
Larry is just killin' it!
nine years late, but the seeing him tune his string at 7:07 in the middle of his solo seems to accurately summarazie his expertise. Monster.
This reminds me of Nostalgia in Times Square lol
Monk and Rouse. That is money!
As always great listening to the most innovative person of jazz piano!
7:55 Larry Gales cool as hell!
The best to ever do it!! RIP unc!
Wayyyy good.
lulu lulu lulu is back is back in tone
Un maestro sensei
rest in peace ben riley!!
Gale's sounds and feel are like a mixture of Sam Jones & Wilbur Ware. very inspiring!
Btw, that double bass looks very the same as the one Charles Mingus used at the exact same place there Aula University in 1964, maybe that bass is the uni's own property?
@@cotehall9434 The bass has the look of a cheap, plywood bass...not that there's anything wrong with that...
Nobody understood tempos better than Monk.
Nobody could play around the beat like Monk. Most of his tunes were the same tempo.
The bass solo is perfection
Amen! 1-3-24.
superlativo! unico e inimitabile! grande Thelonius!
Dang! Watch that piano man!
Can someone transcribe Monk’s blinking at 3:50
Monk is feeling that heron thats when that raw was goooood
Charlie Rouse's solo is so inside.
Monk is like Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Frederik Chopin at cocktail hour.
Love so much!

You're right. But I don't hear wrong notes.
@@tomglase5333 They are merely unexpected.
Mingus once said,"Monk plays wrong right.."
Don’t forget practicing to write comments that reveal a tin ear! Very important!
Monk and the bassist are the best.
One of two sax players who understood Monk's music.
The other one is Sonny Rollins.
John Coltrane struggled initially with this music.

Yes. The sound was in the right and left ears before.

SWEET

Anyone know why Monk and Dolphy did not play togrther?
Love them both.
Sure he never played any wrong note, they all sound great and all belong to the chords

ummm that indeed is Charlie Rouse
All great artists get up from their work or step aside from their work in order to gain perspective.
3:13 - that 'slowly turning around looking at my watch' dance... why didn't michael jackson rip that off, eh?
I can’t help but hear the family guy theme song
Amazing....monk was feeling it
