    I can confirm the Zwift Cog works seamlessly with existing Kickr Core trainers. Just remove the cog from the freehub which it came with, stick the cog onto the already fitted freehub on the trainer and off you go.

      You can get Cog upgrade kit. Just switch the supplied freehub that comes with Cog with the one you have on CORE, and done :)

    I would still go for the zwift hub one. The wahoo kickr core is just a fail constructed faulty product. There are since 6 years the same issues which didnt get fixed yet. I got a new one a few days before and i had the same problems as u can read always. Even the test samples from dc rainmaker and desfit sounded not correct.

    I have an existing Wahoo Kickr Core, and while the one cog is an excellent concept, for me it needs to become an open standard that other training apps can support, otherwise you are committing to the Zwift ecosystem and my personal preference is to have choice and I am currently using Rouvy this year for my winter training.

      I could be wrong, BUT .... the way to go might be to buy the Play Controllers. That way you can use virtual gearing, keeping your cassette. Then when you use Rouvy, switch to mechanical gearing. It means you don't have virtual gearing with Rouvy, but at least you can continue to use it. With the Zwift Cog, of course, this isn't possible.

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  9 месяцев назад

      That would be the way to go. The only advantage of having the cog is simplicity switching bikes that have different gear ratios. But if you only have one bike, then the cog is just a 14t sprocket ⚙️

    So I watched many of the videos, read a bunch of comments, asked a bunch of questions and did some research, and it turns out that despite what it says on Zwift's product page, you actually CAN install a Zwift Cog on a Wahoo Core, by removing the Cog from the Zwift-specific freehub that comes with the kit, and the existing cassette from your Core, and installing the Cog in its place, as both the Cog and Core's freehub are Shimano splined (no luck with Campy freehubs but I assume that everyone already knew that although I'm guessing that it's possible to replace the Core's freehub with a Campy splined one).
    The real question is whether you should or need to do this. If you're a multi-bike household with bikes of differing cassette cogs, it might make sense, especially since you also get the Click controller that allows you to virtually change gears. But if you only have one bike, or all your bikes use the same size number of cogs, then you don't really need or benefit from the Cog, other than that it saves wear on your cassette's middle cog (but even then you could always use an older cassette or replace the one cog when it wears out), and you might as well spend another $19 and get the much more capable Play controllers.
    In fact even if you have multiple bikes and they use different cassette sizes, you can still do virtual shifting on one cassette by shifting the rear derailleur to the centermost cog and making trimming it a bit to avoid chain rub, so long as the chain and cassette are compatible and don't cause rubbing. I suppose that using an 8-11 speed chain on a 12 speed cassette and the like might cause some rubbing. But if you can make this work then it might make sense, and you're better off getting the Play controllers instead.
    This is probably what I'm going to do. I have just one bike so I don't really need the Cog, just the Click that comes with it. But for just $19 more I can get the much more capable Play controllers and do without the Cog. I have several old cassettes that are no longer really rideable, but only on their bigger cogs, which I tend to use more often and thus wore out faster, while the centermost cogs are still useable. I still find $99 to be a bit steep for my tastes, but it's supposed to go up to $149 soon so I guess it's a "bargain".
    I do hope that Zwift opens up the controller Bluetooth protocol and virtual shifting so 3rd parties can come out with their own controllers and other virtual cycling platforms can enable virtual shifting as well, and that the industry settles on some standards on these and related technologies so you're not locked in to any one company's trainers, accessories and platforms. But that's a whole other thing.

  • @Bazza1968
    @Bazza1968 9 месяцев назад

    I'd be tempted to run an old set of cranks with say a 42T chainring and an old cassette then put in a single speed chain tensioner in place of the derailleur... save your drivetrain for the roads if it's your only bike....

    • @kovie9162
      @kovie9162 9 месяцев назад

      It's on the Zwift site since it's a Zwift product, and the Cog part can be installed on a Core's freehub if you remove it from the Zwift freehub that it comes installed onto. What we're still waiting on is a version of the kit that can be installed on a Core without removing the Cog from its freehub. But I don't know why you'd really need a new freehub and why they don't just sell the Cog in an upgrade kit without an included freehub, for less than the current kit.

Additionally, Wahoo is also working on the KICKR V4 (2018), KICKR V5 (2020) firmware, but that won’t quite be as quick. Again, this is all just using Zwift Play or Click, with your existing cassette and new firmware.
