Keeping normal GFR values is key for ensuring efficient removal of waste products and excess fluids from the blood. When kidneys are not functioning properly, they can't effectively filter waste, causing creatinine levels to rise in the blood. Elevated creatinine is often a sign of impaired kidney function.
What is Creatinine?
It is a waste product created in body during the muscle metabolism. Kidneys filter and throw out this waste via urine.
What is GFR?
GFR or the Glomerular Filtration Rate is the volume of blood filtered by the nephrons in 1 minute. It is a critical indicator of kidney function. Low GFR values indicate high creatinine levels or impaired renal function.
Tips to Lower Creatinine levels-
1. Avoid protein intake in your daily diet. This includes foods like non-vegetarian items, red meat, eggs, and dairy products. If you suffer from protein deficiency, consume light proteins like moong dal, but only in quantities prescribed by your doctor.
2. Limit salt intake, as excess sodium can cause fluid retention, swelling, and potentially worsen kidney function and can cause high blood pressure.
3. Avoid nicotine and caffeine-containing drinks, such as coffee, tea, and energy drinks.
4. Avoid vigorous exercise and intense workouts, as the resulting fatigue can increase creatinine production.
5. Stay efficiently hydrated. This will keep your kidneys in a good state. Many times, dehydration causes urine infections, and kidney issues, which further cause creatinine shoot up.
