Check out Hard Corps on the PS3 or Xbox 360. It's probably my favorite Contra game but Contra is no where in the title. When it boots the title screen the music removes any doubt that it's Contra. Definitely worth your time since you're a fellow Contra fan.

Looks neat, but like most mobile games, it's full of the usual microtransactions/in-app purchases.
I'd gladly trade it for a proper Contra console/pc game. Definitely haven't forgotten how bad Contra Rogue Corps was...
Also, I highly recommend playing Contra 4 on DS. Developed by Wayforward. SO GOOD.
For sure, It's hard to decide which one is my favorite between Contra 3 and Contra 4.
Anything WayForward is a winner. Just wish I had that device to capture DS games without just 'point camera at DS'

Hard Corps is easily an S for me. Best in the series and one I had a blast practicing to beat legit! I even beat it again while drinking beer with a friend. Also that soundtrack is just ROCKIN'!

Hard Corps has THE BEST INTRO to a video game ever, hard rock blazing while you jump out of a crashing vehicle and just start blasting everything.
No intro or handrails or tutorial BS, you just get right into it.
The nostalgic factor of contra 3 puts it ahead of hard corps for me buuuut hard corps was f@&cking awesome it took contra to the next level! Definitely my second favorite of the contra series.

LMFAO Hard Corps is factually the best contra ever if not sidescroller shooter. It's so funny how he gave it a B yet gives Contra Advance on GBA an S! Then he uses footage of the GBA game CLEARLY ripping off the GENESIS GAME'S LEVELS and looking worse/worse music 😂 SAME EXACT BOSS FIGHTS TOO AND WEAPONS

IMO I believe that Contra Hard Corps is the best contra ever made, I know it's hard as hell but It will keep you trying over and over again, pretty unfair with the B but hey! Nice video.
That’s exactly why I give it an S. One hundred percent. And I’ve now gotten a couple of the endings, and I still love it!

You could always play the game with a game genie for more/infinite lives. If not there is a patch that Reinstates the Hit-point system that got removed from the American version of the game.
Different people have different opinions. Who knew?
I don't know how I beat it as a kid...konami collection has save state so save as I go, infinite lives.
As an SNES kid I grew up denying it, but playing the Contra Collection I had to finally admit, Hard Corps was the pinnacle. It's just doing so much, and has so much game to offer with the multiple characters & paths.

Grew up with Hard Corps so I might be biased - but the multiple characters, epic songs, weapon switching, secret path, crazy bosses, multiple paths and endings, its the best and most underrated.
Contra and Super C are just flawless to me. Many years ago I honed my skills to beat them both without any cheat codes. I’ve never beat them without dying, but I’m getting close. Great stuff as always, John!
Contra will always test your friendships when someone grabs the spread shot when it was your turn to get it, or start taking your lives when they get a game over.

I don't know: turn-based combat might be considered passive, or assertive at most, and Contra's never had that... unless you count the Wild Arms series; I've always described those as "If they made a JRPG out of a Contra plot."

My favorite Contra of all time is Hard Corps. It was one of my top Genesis Games ever. The fact that the game offered 4 different characters with different weapons/abilities and the game offered 4 different routes and endings (plus a few secrets ones) based on the choices you made in game, gave the game tons of replay value.
Wish you had atleast included contra 4 on the DS. Loved that game as well

Contra: Shattered Soldier for the PlayStation 2 is phenomenal and you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing it. Also, Hard Corps Uprising counts as a Contra game in my book!
I kinda sped through the video looking to see where this one would be ranked, and disappointed to see it missed.
As much as I like the NES version, I do like the Famicom version more as it did not just buffed the difficulty slightly on most enemies and bosses but also improved on the graphical backgrounds. Best examples are the waving palm trees in stage 1, the waterfalls in stage 3 and the snow in stage 5.
And the Arcade version way better looking than both cuz it's 16 bit.
...And cut scenes.

You think Hard Corps is hard, Contra 4 on DS is OUTRAGEOUSLY HARD!! As for Contra Advance, it's a mixture of Contra 3 with stages from Hard Corps replacing the overhead stages.
Contra 3 on hard mode is insane but Shattered Soldier on PS2? Oh boy. You dont know hard until you played that....
@@maxpowered7144 I could never beat Contra 3, not even on Easy. I've beat the Game Boy version of it numerous times. Try beating Contra 3 GB on Maniac difficulty with ONE LIFE...NO CONTINUES.
Hard Corps and Alien Wars are both S ranks for myself
I've never been a huge fan of Contra - more of a Gunstar Heroes gal - but Hard Corps was outstanding; easy S-tier from me. Contra 3 on the SNES was also great; lots of over-the-top stunts. Contra Force is my favorite of the NES titles, but my favorite NES Castlevania is Simon's Quest, so I'm used to being wrong.
Contra 4 is legit. "A" rank.

Hi John, it's Daniel from Spain. I suppose you know that here in Europe those games were called Probotector instead of Contra, changing the human characters for something like cyborgs. I was lucky to find import games at that time and played Contra and Super Contra on my NES but I've never found the reason about that changes, do you?
My top Contra game is Contra Hard Corps. So many great memories of getting far into it in college with a buddy. Every other level, it gave you a branching path, so there were many levels you could see & tons of replay value. I remember a hidden ending before the arena fight in level 3 where you go to the stone age & become king. The only other game I remember sinking lots of coop time into back then was Gunstar Heroes.
Also a big fan of Contra Shattered Soldier for PS2. I rebought it digital on PS3 last year.
The spiritual successors to the Contra series look to be Hard Corps Uprising & Blazing Chrome; I still need to get into these.
Like your list but how can you omit Contra 4?..what an excellent game!…..Even Hard Corps Uprising is worth mentioning.
I never found Hard Corps hard, but then again I had a japanese version. Difference is in US version you get 3 lives, that's it. In Japanese you get 3 lives and a health bar of 3 health points.
When I was a kid, I did not care about the naming and Contra Force is by far my favorite game from 8 bit games in this list. Especially the level where you walk top down on airplanes, moving from one plane to other. Yes, this should not have been named contra, but it is seriously good game. I would say in my top 20 of all nes games, that good. And one of those that you could enjoy and actually beat.

For the longest time my sister and I never knew about the Konami Code for extra lives. We kept trying to beat Contra on NES for so long on the regular lives system.
If you've never gotten far enough to hear it, do yourself a favor and go listen to Last Springsteen from Hard Corps. It's insane.
Fun fact some of the levels and enemy’s from the game boy color version of contra alien wars ex some of them are from contra hard corps

I remember back in high school around 1994 my friend said nobody can beat Contra on NES with the 30 lives code. I told him I've done it but he didn't believe me so I told him I can prove it. I hooked up my NES to the VCR recorded myself playing through the whole game from start to finish with my stock amount of lives gave him the tape the next day and that was that.
Yeah it's not a hard game. I can beat it without losing a life. I've done it a couple of times actually.

I recently discovered Hard Corps for PS3. I love this game. The gameplay is great, it has beautiful hand drawn graphics, and an amazing metal sound track. This was designed by Arc Systems of Guilty Gear fame.
Contra and Hard Corps are S tier for me. Super C is a solid D.
Definitely gonna have to check out the contra advance game! I didn’t even know it existed till now. I really liked Contra 4 for the DS. I figured you would include it somewhere on this list.
contra alien wars for GB is one of my favorite GB games. I use to play it so much as a kid

Contra 4 for the DS was a pretty awesome game. I know that’s not one of the systems in the description being reviewed but nonetheless I thought it was pretty cool.
I miss that one being I no longer have my OG DS collection.. They really should rerelease it.. It was hard but I don’t remember ever rage quitting like I did with Contra 3 on SNES..

Nice John, I actually did an Instructable on how to perform the Contra code back in college, lol! Just found Hard Corps: Uprising on the PSN, phenomenal game too, IMO.
Contra 1985 is one of my all time favorite games. Me and my sister spend like all day trying to beat it one time.

Never knew about the GBA version, I'll definitely check that out. In UK Contra is called Probotector, I way prefer the robot graphics on the mid level stills of Super Probotector, they're highly detailed

He explained it in the video. These are ranks relative to the other Contra games. Compared to every other NES game, it's definitely an S rank. But compared to some of the other Contra games it's not quite as good (like Super C). In any other situation it'd get an S, but in the context of only comparing it to other Contra games, then yeah, it's not as good as some of those other ones.
@@duffman18 actually in the video he also said that in his Konami rankings he didn't rank contra as high as some of the other Konami games.

Contra force is one of my faves and was really goid but the slow downs hurt it deep in me i believe its a contra game it feels like it to me 💕💕💕💕💕

I've been playing the series since I was a little 80s kid. I'll only rank the Contras I played which I can beat hitless or losing, at most, three lives.
S- Hard Corps, Shattered Soldier
A- Contra
B- Operation C, Super C, Contra 3, Neo Contra
C- Contra Force, Contra Rebirth, Contra 4
I am probably like most people. I like Contra, Super C, Contra III, Contra Hard Corp. Then it stops there.
Same with Castlevania 1-4, Bloodlines, Rondo of Blood and symphony of the night.

That's of the ones I played. For some reason still don't have Contra 4 or ever played it somehow.
Super C, Contra III, and Hard Corps are easily the S tiers for me, with Super C at the top of the heap.
The arcade version of Super C was ridiculously hard, but you fight the "Alien" from the cut scene in Contra III as one of the Alien bosses, and the game overall was pretty obviously based on "Aliens". Which is all a win-win really.
Contra Hard corps is definitely the best contra game. Giving it a B is not warranted.
This is why Nintendo Sega was actual console war..back then 1 property u got 2 totally different games going head to head pushing the console...Aladdin, lion king, contra, mortal kombat...u got same license but huge differences...now u can barely tell difference with consoles.
Yeah, I agree with many in the comments about Hard Corps. You’re a bit too harsh with it because of the difficulty. It is easily one of the best Contra games, and I’m speaking as someone who needs to use a game genie to beat it. That said, if they had left the easier Japanese difficulty intact, along with the Konami code (which was only available in Japan), it would have rivalled (or bested) Contra 3 for SNES. I think that Hard Corps was a victim of increasing difficulty for American games because of the ability to rent them.
Excellent video as always and totally understandable to take the sponsorship, but good lord does that mobile game look horrible. I'd take precise controls and solid game design over graphics and number of features ANY day. And I'd so much rather pay for something up front than play something """free""" that's constantly trying to get money out of me. I wish people wouldn't put up with that crap - but they do, so here we are

Shattered Soldier on PS2 is the best imo, that should have been included in this video along with 4 on DS.
The less said about the 3D entries the better.
I just like and play the two arcade games. Although there's one on the Tandy CoCo 3 that's like the NES game but with new levels that I'd love to try out. Think I watched MJR play some of that.

I loved her and loved the whole goth girl thing . To me she was the girl next door . Anywho , hopefully you don’t mind me using this , to remember her I guess . RIP Daffney . This one def sucks and hurts .

Personally I would put Contra 3 near last because I hate the top down sections, the game has some slowdown issues and to play optimally you have to swap between weapons constantly and it hurts my hand. Hard Corps I think is #1 but I completely understand knocking it for the difficulty. That being said if you get good enough to get through it you will be over the moon.
Good. When Contra Returns is made for a console and I can BUY IT with no garbage micro transactions and order a physical copy I’ll gladly pay full price. Instead Konami keeps making garbage console contra games that no one wants.

I prefer console gaming. And playing Android games is new to me. I need to buy a controller for my Tablet. And I have a TV box that's android based. Hmmm. I'll try this contra version on Playstore .

I like the laser in Contra and prefer Super C as well, John. I think Super C is objectively the better game. I have more nostalgia for Contra, but I like Super C more.

Contra Advance, they took away the bombs compared to the SNES version. That's why I didn't like that game.
As good as the NES versions are, I'm greatful for the Arcade Archives versions. Nothing beats the originals.
You are rating Contra hard Corps a B because it's too hard lol. Also you rated 1 an S because it has a password system lol. Ok easy solution to that. Play Contra Hard Corps on either a Retron 5 or ever drive. Some system where you can use save states. Do that while playing Contra hard Corps and you'll give it an S.
To the makers of Contra Returns, release it on PS4 without monetizing, just flat price.

No Contra 4, Rebirth, the PS1 or PS2 games? Are you going to do that in another video? You simply left out too many predominant titles from the series out.
CONTRA 3 is THEEE best for me. Has everything to ask for in that style of game; then I say the original two. The other Alien Wars one is only a replica lol

Just some feedback. your channel is the only channel ive consistently run into this issue, there is a pop up banner ad like literally every 2 minutes. it makes me either want to turn on a pop up blocker or stop watching all together. You may want to reduce the amount, id honestly rather just watch a 10 second video ad.

The only game that comes close to Contra Advance for me is Contra IV for the DS. WayForward absolutely crushed it - fantastic game.
Operation C is my favorite, with Contra Rebirth and SNES Alien Wars just behind.

The original Contra is one of my favorite video games of all time. Never played the one you liked best. SO surprised you don't give orig Contra an "s" rating. Here or on your other Konami vid.
