This is where I finally get to put hard corps in its place. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy playing this game immensely, but the ideas and level design are a bit uninspired and ripped from previous run and gun games. Sliding to hurt enemies, lets rip that straight from gunstar heroes. Constantly changing enemy like Seven force, Bah! Lets create this digital enemy that turns into a bull, helicopter, archer and tetris pieces where the stage doesn't change like in gunstar heroes with less inspired attack patterns....Mode 7 like enemy that is in the background and throws attacks onto the foreground, yeah lets also rip that from gunstar heroes. Remember how contra 3 recreated the boss from super contra and remixed it while paying tribute to the previous games, yeah lets take that attack pattern replace the enemy design with a less inspired enemy design, copy the enemy and put it upside down and put it on top of the original enemy while bouncing. It's more substance than actual creativity and new enemy ideas. There's so many times where it's here's a new enemy with a new attack pattern that may have been inspired by a previous game. The art style just feels jumbled and random that it doesn't create any kind of memorable setting or atmosphere like contra 3 or gunstar heroes. There's many gun choices sure, but there were only few moments where I calculated which guns I used for specific situations which I did a lot in Gunstar heroes and contra 3. The controls were not as intuitive as contra 3 where triggering the standing still button was either a simple on or off, where contra 3 had a system where holding the R button depended if your character could stand still and shoot accurately. This created situations where you may be trying to stand still and shoot and enemy but you can easily let go of the r button to avoid enemy attacks quickly. Unlike hard corps where your only indication if your character is in standing still mode is in the top left corner of the screen, weapon I or II. This creates a longer process of knowing which mode you are on and having to click the button again to either get off the mode or turn it on. Cycling through weapons is also a huge pain as they simply put all your bombs and weapons one whole bar, so you had to cycle through them one by one. In gunstar heroes you only worried about cycling through 3 things and contra 3 just 2 and it had bombs set to its own button. So actually acquiring more weapons in hard corps actually makes it harder to quickly pick the one you prefer. The snes controller was also better designed for contra. Using the tip of the thumb for shooting while using the base of the thumb for jumping is much more intuitive than constantly moving your thumb off one button to the next, and being able to use the R button to stand still meant that the only times you moved your thumb a bit was to use bombs or change weapons which were conveniently in a diagonal shape and comfortably close. The music is the thing that also gets insanely overrated in hard corps. Yeah, these tunes were fast and hectic, but they were also simplistic and catering to that simple mindset where action must be complimented by fast metal/techno type compositions. This is fine, but when the whole soundtrack tries to do that, man does that get old fast. Contra 3's score had variety and created build up which complimented the situations leading up to bosses that had intense and well thought out compositions. I prefer music that actually complements a stage than just fast and simple rhythms and melodies that screams action all the flipping time. It's like the game was designed for kids with short attention spans, fast music and many enemies and bosses that don't really introduce new and innovative run and gun ideas. The game is fun and even though some of these attack patterns are ripped from previous games just remixed, they are done pretty good. But the game just doesn't feel as polished as contra 3 and gunstar heroes and the stages don't progress or compliment all the enemy encounters as well either. The game never gives the player enough time to appreciate the encounter of the boss, the atmosphere, and the battle. It's just, heres a boss..fight it..oh it's dead...ok next boss. If you want to see how boss rushes are done right, play alien soldier. Variety doesnt always make a better game, I would rather prefer a game with better thought out level design that is complemented with smart enemy placement and better intuitive controls than many weapons that are lacking and levels that drag.
LazorNoob agreed, hard corps is better even in the graphics department, sprites are smaller and that's a GOOD thing, because the game is so action filled that you really need the game larger view. And it was filled with amazing effects
Same with me, Alien Wars Soundtrack is simply put, boring. For an action game that's the biggest crime you can commit. Contra 1 and Super C even though 8-bit had soundtracks that pumped you up, nothing like that in Alien Wars to be honest. Can't remember almost a single track from that game other than stage clear and the first level.
So far, the only "Contra" games I've played were the NES version, one on an emulator, and the original arcade game on a "Konami" game compilation on my Nintendo DS. "Contra" is practically the perfect blend of Rambo and Predator. lol
Viktor Vaughn I remember when he called it the marine corpse and pissed off the marines. When they corrected them he said it is pronounced the way I say it is and pissed them off even more. Marines are the last people I would piss off.
Contra SNES : Clean and Tight Contra MD : Wild and Stylish both are good. my preference over the two are always changing but right now i'm leaning more towards Contra: Hard Corp.
I was just thinking about this, no Contra on PC Engine :(Actually the Genesis got better support from Konami than the PCE. The PCE other than Rondo of Blood mostly got downgraded arcade ports while the Genesis got lot of exclusive and some awesome ones at that! I'm impressed by the japanese support the Genesis received despite that Sega wasn't a japanese company to begin (which is why the Genesis sold less than its rivals in Japan but in unbiased regions such as North America the Genesis was much more successful than the PCE (which was renamed Turbografx there) and on par with the SNES.
+Yohko M. Fully agree. Also not sure if the PC Engine could have handled a Contra on par with others 16-bit versions but I'd have been curious to see that.
+Classic Modern Gaming What I can bet is that your a PC Engine fanboy. I don't see a single PC Engine game which comes remotely close to the best run 'n guns on Genesis or SNES. The few and good PC Engine run 'n guns are overhead games such as Bloody Wolf or Red Alert, both of which just look and sound like beefed-up NES stuff. But had the PC Engine got a port of the first Contra, that would have been already nice but even that didn't happen.
I agree. I'm more of a Nintendo guy in general, but Hard Corps is just waay more fun than Contra III. Also the NES Contras and the DS one have Alien Wars beat. While it's an awesome game, still I can't quite put my finger on it, but C3 is just somehow generally less awesome than the rest.
I played and beat both games, Contra 3 on Hard mode and every path and character in Hard Corps. I think Hard Corps wins on every possible count, it's just a much better game. The only thing that Contra 3 has over Hard Corps is the difficulty, it's a significantly tougher game (unless you're playing it on easy settings.) I feel like that once you learn the boss patterns in Hard Corps the game becomes a breeze. The boss fights in Contra 3 are much more intense and more about reflexes than patterns. With that said Contra 3 is still a classic, fantastic game, and I would rank it over the original Contra and Super C. Hard Corps owes everything to Contra 3. Contra 3 gets 7/10 from me, and Hard Corps 9/10.
I LOVE Contra III: The Alien Wars, but I do own a physical copy of Contra: Hard Corps which I have yet to play. Maybe I should one day, but those two Hard Corps levels that replaced the top down levels in the GBA version turnt me off of the Sega Genesis version. I’ll give it a go soon and play the complete game on the Sega Genesis.
@@slavicus2046 - I know why Konami did it, but I disagree. The GBA screen wasn’t too small for those two mode 7 top down levels. It could’ve worked. Replacing those levels with levels from Hard Corps seemed out of place and took away from the experience for me. Plus, with the lack of a second weapon and the elimination of bombs or very limited usage of it; those levels were difficult and boring.
Despite everything you say, I still think the SNES version is just more fun to actually play and experience overall. Like so many of Genesis' more intense games, I actually think there's too much going on half the time, and you end up just going through the motions trying to survive the endless onslaught rather than actually playing and enjoying the game. It sensory overload.
Contra was made to be on the Genesis. More speed and metal-sounding music rather than the SNES's laggy processor and orchestral-sounding music. Though I admit Contra III is very good.
Sega can outdo Nintendo... provided the developers now what the hell they're doing. (which obviously Konami did). But I think Contra III has music that's just as good.
I only had Japanese version of Contra Hard Corps back then. My friend never had Contra 3 so I've played it much later. And since that day I pretty much never played Hard Corps, I just like Contra 3 more. Maybe it's time to replay HC, but it would be hard with all those dancing robots and some very annoying bosses like in stage 4.
Seven years later and this is still very funny. I imagine you both took a long hiatus after this episode. Contra House Corps is very dangerous on the dance floor.
Not long ago, I got Contra Anniversary Collection. I think Contra: Hard Corps is way better. You got multiple paths with multiple endings that also effects which bosses you'll face. There's a lot of depth to it. Contra 3 is a great game hands down. But Hard Corps really brings it especially for Konami who tried not doing that on Sega Genesis.
Looking back...I prefer Contra 3 more, probably because of its blend of action and horror premise. Hard Corps is like, "We're badass and we're here to kick some ass!". Which is something that always works in a video game. While Contra 3 is like, "Aliens came and f***ed up Earth. But we're fighting back, we're gonna reclaim Earth and kick these aliens' f***ing asses!"
Yeah, the Genesis version came out two years after the SNES version, but the SNES came out two years after the Genesis version--So it has an unfair advantage in graphics and sound Not to mention you won't actually get an ending in the SNES version unless you play it on a difficult setting. Fun review, keep em coming!
Hard Corps music is also absolutely incredible. One of the best soundtracks in the 16-bit era and absolutely fitting for the game. Much better than the snes shit.
Much like the Castlevania games, if you're a fan of Contra, you're gonna end up playing both. Both games provide an awesomely unique experience that you'd miss out on by only playing one version.
You forgot to mention Contra: Hard Corps has a slide attack which is 100% invincible throughout the animation giving you a dodge against enemies if you're skilled enough to time it right, some of the bosses even require you to use it properly to beat them. I wish this video was longer and went more into the level design and how carefully thought out everything was in both games, Hard Corps is also a moderately more difficult game and never gives you room to breathe.
+Console Wars 1:31- Okay! First off, the word, "corps", has a similar pronunciation to the word, "core", not "corpse" (because both the letters "p" and "s" are silent).
I found switching weapons and shooting prone to be a little difficult in Hard Corps and could be problematic in a twitch shooter. Contra 3 on the snes was easy to switch weapons and go prone on the fly. Both great games, but i might have given Contra 3 the edge for it's more manageable play control.
@@opaljk4835 I do use the 6 button Genesis controller. However, I just find the SNES control setup better. On the snes, you only have to press 1 button to launch a bomb, on Genesis, you have to select it, then use it which is a hard thing to do in a twitchy run and gun.
¿Best sound: Contra 3? ¡Fuck you! Hard corps has one of the best Sega's soundtracks and of all time in the history of videogames. It's so cool, so wild and so awesome. Contra: hard corps it's superior in every way.
🎶Everybody in the Contra phenomenon, heroes and villains, rejoice with love, peace and understanding and...now...DANCE now!!🎶 Ha ha! I'm just kidding! But, the idea reminds me of when the world rejoiced when World War II ended. It's fascinating that I thought of that just after saying something like, 🎤 "everybody dance now!" 🙂
YoshiMate78 - The Yoshi God - Damn, your opinion is flawed. I've playing both for the last 20+ years, and Hard Corps is easily one of the most technically impressive games of its time. Contra 3 is fine, but like I said, your opinion is flawed.
I agree that Hard Corps is a better game, at least for me. It feels better and has a better pace, while keeping the challenge manageable. The variety in that game exists, and is presented in a much less obvious yet more consistent manner, keeping the general rules the same but giving the player a different method for clearing challenges. On the sound end, aside from having better music, I think the deeper, chunkier sounds of the Genesis enhance the feel of the game, making combat feel sharper.
I love both of them to death. But Hardcorps gets the nod because of The Slide and Weapon system. But the SNES.. the music is INCREDIBLE and the Nuclear bomb effect is BEAUTIFUL.
Super Probotector? interesting name. dont know what probotector means. then again i dont really know what contra means. we never played either game growing up (i know, i know). we thought snes would def win before we played both, but the sega game surprised us with how fun it was. i guess for us there was more enjoyment in genesis. (yes, the wolf character was ridiculous)
They both have there strengths, I prefer the cinematic music of Alien Wars, colors. The level design is awesome as well. But I appreciate how Hard Corps had more characters, different endings. Cool graphics.
Both games are excellent, it's hard to compare them as they are very different from each other. I still have my original SNES with my good old Contra3 and I love jumping into it from time to time. But I did play the Genesis version and seriously enjoyed it. I have to say both are equally good as they both have different pros and cons. Hard Corp's winning feature tho... deeper story telling and multiple paths really sets it apart.

LazorNoob agreed, hard corps is better even in the graphics department, sprites are smaller and that's a GOOD thing, because the game is so action filled that you really need the game larger view. And it was filled with amazing effects
Contra Hard Corps on Sega all the way, faster action, better graphics overall
Radical Richard maybe harder than snes and best game ,, but graphics sucks ,, snes version have better graphics and sound ,, but s easy and short
Radical Richard 😂😂😂😂😂yeah ok
Radical Richard Sega's version is better
Snes graphics is much better, though sega version looks great.
Better graphics are you blind
Both games are outstanding in my humble opinion.
But only one of them is better.
@@ultimategamer2669 which is hard corps lol
Hard Corps is the better game its top grade for its time .
Contra III is an awesome game, but Hard Corps is my favorite Contra game ever.
Great match up!
3:44 I was brushing my teeth and spit toothpaste everywhere when I saw this! 🤣
I like Hard Corps soundtrack better.
While I agree, Contra 3 Stage 3, Neo Kobe Steel Factory OST is LIT lol. Otherwise, Hard Corps OST definitely takes the cake
If you ask me sega always seemed to have better music and sounds then snes
@@karlkani4458 especially in action games and fighting games
In fact, everything is better. Contra 3 objectively cannot win at any point.
SEGA wins for it's madness.I miss the 16-bit days.
Madness?
THIS
IS
SEEEEEGAAAAA!!!
1:34 a moment so cool the best take was Greg almost cracking.
He's afraid it would hit him in the face. Else, why is he blinking?
6:01 LOL, that was a gift straight from the heavens. You guys are awesome.
So far, the only "Contra" games I've played were the NES version, one on an emulator, and the original arcade game on a "Konami" game compilation on my Nintendo DS. "Contra" is practically the perfect blend of Rambo and Predator. lol
Criminally underrated. When you get that play button buddy it will be the most deserved in the history of RUclips.
It's pronounced "Core" not "Corpse"!
Obama changed it. It's corpse now.
+Crimson Ghost 😂fuck ya bra!
+Crimson Ghost Fuckin Obama.....changing names and shit.
Viktor Vaughn I remember when he called it the marine corpse and pissed off the marines. When they corrected them he said it is pronounced the way I say it is and pissed them off even more. Marines are the last people I would piss off.
It's like how blazblue is actually pronounced blaze blue
This was the funniest episode I've watched so far! Had me laughing out loud in real life
I prefer Contra Hard Corps.
the uncensored usa version?
9:31 i can clearly hear lock and loaded and payback time. even when my english is self taught.
English is not my first language, but I can clearly hear the same as you...
By the way, I love the music on the Genesis versión of the game..
I can clearly hear someone talking under water...
How is that good?!
Yes, it's clear, but it's still relatively bad, even for the Sega console. It's dull or low.
Both games look pretty rad.
Oh man, this is gonna be a doozy episode. Really hard to choose between these 2 masterpieces.
Contra SNES : Clean and Tight
Contra MD : Wild and Stylish
both are good. my preference over the two are always changing but right now i'm leaning more towards Contra: Hard Corp.
Contra III on SNES or Contra Hard Corps on Genesis? (btw the PC Engine doesn't have a single Contra game) I say tie! Both are equally awesome.
Parallax Craze You can bet your ass it could. Would have been fantastic.
+Classic Modern Gaming
What I can bet is that your a PC Engine fanboy.
Hard Corps is definitely the superior game.
@@NYCJoeBlack It was a bad idea to to mix the two games together.
Your not that good at the game.. just say that
@@inceptional If you think a game creates sensory overload. You are just not that good.
@@SDSOverfiend I don't think you understand what sensory overload it.
@@inceptional I do. I suffer from PPPD. But I still play video games
@Console Wars You forgot to mention that the japanese version of Contra: Hard Corp has life bar.
Contra was made to be on the Genesis. More speed and metal-sounding music rather than the SNES's laggy processor and orchestral-sounding music. Though I admit Contra III is very good.
They're both great games. The real winner this episode was us (cue sappy music).
Sega can outdo Nintendo... provided the developers now what the hell they're doing. (which obviously Konami did). But I think Contra III has music that's just as good.
***** Understandable, it was a really good game.
Shattered soldier>>>Hard corps>>>Alien wars
@Derfel Cadarn
I prefer Super C.
John Sega this is console water!
Saw this older vid show up in my feed autoplaying and couldn't stop laughing at the closed caption. :D
This is one of my all time favorite youtube channels, i love what you do guys.
Seven years later and this is still very funny. I imagine you both took a long hiatus after this episode. Contra House Corps is very dangerous on the dance floor.
Seriously one of my favourite episodes! Especially loved all the Hard Corps characters dancing hahaha
Thank you!
Damn i laughed way too hard when both guys had to barf at the top down spinning gameplay 😂😂😂
Neh, Sega's explosions and gunfires sound like real deals. Nintendo's sound like cartoon versions.
Sega knows how to club.
Yeah, the Genesis version came out two years after the SNES version, but the SNES came out two years after the Genesis version--So it has an unfair advantage in graphics and sound
Not to mention you won't actually get an ending in the SNES version unless you play it on a difficult setting.
Fun review, keep em coming!
The Contra Dance Dance Revolution cracks me up everytime!
Hard Corps music is also absolutely incredible. One of the best soundtracks in the 16-bit era and absolutely fitting for the game. Much better than the snes shit.
I would never call Contra III ost shit but whatever.
Sega is much better.
It's not. Wonder why when they make new comtra games they copy the snes
That's it! Are we doin' this?
Much like the Castlevania games, if you're a fan of Contra, you're gonna end up playing both. Both games provide an awesomely unique experience that you'd miss out on by only playing one version.
You forgot to mention Contra: Hard Corps has a slide attack which is 100% invincible throughout the animation giving you a dodge against enemies if you're skilled enough to time it right, some of the bosses even require you to use it properly to beat them. I wish this video was longer and went more into the level design and how carefully thought out everything was in both games, Hard Corps is also a moderately more difficult game and never gives you room to breathe.
great channel guys. i like the concept. i am now subscribed.
+dramos ramos Awesome!
+Console Wars The dancing section was absolute gold! Here is my like and subscription. You guys have earned them both.
+Console Wars 1:31- Okay! First off, the word, "corps", has a similar pronunciation to the word, "core", not "corpse" (because both the letters "p" and "s" are silent).
+Console Wars 1:31- Proofreading!
I had only one thing to say: Last Springsteen (Final Boss Theme Contra Hard Corps) kick ass!
Which final boss? Worst ending? Joke ending? Disappointing ending? Good ending? Best ending?...
Bahamut and Alien Cells, I think
jaimegamesxD Man, so many endings. That ST is AWESOME.
Greg's Dancing is EPIC :D
Rocket Knight Adventures on SEGA GENESIS
VS
Sparkster on SNES
that part where u guys barf during that top down level in contra III had me and all my friends laughing like crazy! lol
I laughed so hard at that snes split screen throw up scene. That was done perfect to the T. Loved it. Thanks guys
Dan is SO confused by Greg's Dance moves XD!
I found switching weapons and shooting prone to be a little difficult in Hard Corps and could be problematic in a twitch shooter. Contra 3 on the snes was easy to switch weapons and go prone on the fly. Both great games, but i might have given Contra 3 the edge for it's more manageable play control.
You also have a lot less weapons to choose from, so hard Corp needs a bit more strategy. It’s easier with a 6 burton
@@opaljk4835 I do use the 6 button Genesis controller. However, I just find the SNES control setup better. On the snes, you only have to press 1 button to launch a bomb, on Genesis, you have to select it, then use it which is a hard thing to do in a twitchy run and gun.
Both games are awesome! And I can't believe Contra isn't more popular in speed runs these days.
hahaha the dancing + Black or White MV was awesome!
For some unknown reason, at 2:19 I thought I'm looking at Isolated Island from Knuckles' Chaotix. o_O
I think Contra III's music is more cinematic and Hard Corps is exactly how it sounds.
I owned and loved both games but I always preferred hard corps and still do!
*Nothing* about Contra 3 is superior to Hard Corps. Hard Corps is immaculate. Perfect in every way.
No mention of the secret bosses and that sick Vampire Killer remix in Hard Corps? Glad to see Sega won anyway.
¿Best sound: Contra 3? ¡Fuck you! Hard corps has one of the best Sega's soundtracks and of all time in the history of videogames. It's so cool, so wild and so awesome. Contra: hard corps it's superior in every way.
Haha we all know they gave C3 2 point out of pitty ^^
🎶Everybody in the Contra phenomenon, heroes and villains, rejoice with love, peace and understanding and...now...DANCE now!!🎶 Ha ha! I'm just kidding! But, the idea reminds me of when the world rejoiced when World War II ended. It's fascinating that I thought of that just after saying something like, 🎤 "everybody dance now!" 🙂
I can always go back and play alien wars, but I can't stay on hard corps too long. Plus i love the over the top.
Ohhhhh man I forgot about "dancing 2 ball boss" hahaha even if they are dancing Contra is still an amazing series!
Contra hard corps OBVIOUSLY
Contra 3 is garbage
YoshiMate78 - The Yoshi God - your is an opinion too that needs to be set on fire. Contra 3 is fucking bad.
Contra 3 was, is, and always shall be, better than Hard Craps!!
YoshiMate78 - The Yoshi God - Damn, your opinion is flawed. I've playing both for the last 20+ years, and Hard Corps is easily one of the most technically impressive games of its time. Contra 3 is fine, but like I said, your opinion is flawed.
Shock Wave Nah
The wolf character is my favorite. #ChangeMyMind.
Thanks for replying! Also, remember to use Guile's theme. It goes with everything.
10 years old already
haters gonna hate. I believe your comparisons are great and entertaining
both are very good, maybe the best ones ever
Hard corps has a lot more background effects.so better graphics on genesis.
this is what RUclips was all about, Miss those days. :')
lmao at the glamour shots...you guys get funnier the more i watch...
I subscribed because of the Short Circuit 2 reference.
Excellent!
They both have there strengths, I prefer the cinematic music of Alien Wars, colors. The level design is awesome as well. But I appreciate how Hard Corps had more characters, different endings. Cool graphics.
Hard Corps was much better.
These shows are killer, good work fallas,
Thank you.
I laughed my ass off at 3:00 - 3:19, especially that robot at the end xD
+thegr8fraz hahaha that was the best part of the video. so fitting
+Benny Palma right yea
